Scythe lawn mow

  • New build house, new garden, newly laid turf but no new lawn mower and grass is growing away. No problem: a few minutes with a scythe and its back in control, ready for a hand powered push lawn mower. (Dad with a scythe is of some practical use after all!)
    (Took about 10-15 minutes, compressed for all like me with a short attention span).

    Literally everyone (including me) in my neighborhood uses lawn services, so there is almost never a time when there isn't a mower or leaf blower being operated *somewhere*.
    I am imagining a world of scythes and rakes. So beautiful. So silent.

      I entirely agree. The sound of them is very annoying I must say, filling the air, dominating conversations between folks, and lingering on for long into the afternoon before they finally cease.
      Also, although fossil fuels are supposedly nowhere near being depleted, it irks me a lot how much decadent waste is caused by the use of all of these machines: not just the amount of fuel they use, which could be better used elsewhere, but even the cost of manufacturing. Added to that, is the same mentality then demands 'gyms', and 'workout machines', all swallowing up huge resources in the cost of their manufacturing, plus the cost of the manufacturing of the car plus fuel that it uses to drive the same idiot to the needless gym.
      All they had to do was buy a broom, or a scythe, or a bow saw! Stupid, dumb, young species!!

      We use a lawn service because atm we have no access to a vehicle and the nearest gas station is 5 miles away.
      But I might just get a scythe and use that. It's gives me something to do and it seems oddly relaxing, plus its great exercise.

It really puts a smile on one's face the whole time.

      I used one yesterday, what i had to grip was two rusty metal poles, even with gloves on i have blisters on my hands, a proper area of my thumb lost skin and i somehow popped the blisters in my sleep, now they're ugly looking
      And i never got told of having to sharpen it every few minutes, i had to cut down so much grass, with the cut grass going on top of the grass, camouflaging it, for about 6 hours with 10 min breaks and one 20-30 min break, it was like 7 square meters and i had to cut it with a dull blade..

    • @maxdecphoenix
      @maxdecphoenix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You're correct. Highly likely the edge want up to snuff at the start. There are many different scythes of different degrees of hardness. American blades are made of a high carbon steel, that is filed to create an edge. You need a really aggressive stone to do anything to them. The Austrian blades are made of a much lower carbon. while generally the edge is hammered, how much depends on exactly what you're cutting. For lawn (actual blades of limp grass) the edge is hammered very thin, thin to the point you can manipulate the very edge with finger pressure, then stone it to get a bevel. Such a flimsy edge is bad for tougher vegetation because it can actually chip and break. With a freshly peened blade though, in lawn, no. You shouldn't need to stone it frequently, especially on a patch this small. I suspect, this blade hasn't been peened in some time, or has been peened with jigs (which give a good 'bramble edge', but nothing close to a 'lawn edge'). To remedy that, you have to stone the blade quite regularly. Even with the peening jigs, its difficult to get a "lawn cutting edge". Its just something that has to be done free hand.
