      chhances are you will fake up due the bite. They arent made for biting human so it can be painfull. Most rabbies death accure in third world countries that can afford treatment or by people who dont think much about science and think they are immortal.
      Like there was one case where a owner got bit by his very dogs that sometime later died due rabbies. Yet this genius never went to the ER right afterwards to get his shots.

      It's the UK. Native UK bats can have a type of European rabies, but it's extremely rare, much more rare than Bats in US, there's only been a single case of human rabies caught within the UK in the last 100 years, this was from a bat conservationist in Scotland who got bit handling bats, didn't bother getting prophylaxis and died. It's still advised to get rabies prophylaxis if bitten by a bat in the UK, better safe than sorry given incubation time can be anywhere from a week to 12 years in the literature, and once symptoms start it's 99.999% fatal, only one ever truly confirmed survivor once symptoms start, who was the young woman in Texas who was put into a coma and survived, but she still had years of recovery and has mild brain injury to this day. Rabies is not to be messed with, it's the the most fatal virus on Earth.

      not necessarily several weeks. Bats have very small teeth and their bite is invisible, even blood will not be visible, but this is enough for the virus to reach the brain very slowly. Scientists who deal with rabies claim that, unlike the bite of dogs and cats, the incubation period from the bite of bats lasts longer, because their bite is small and there is little virus, so it will slowly reach the brain.

    I really hope you got yourself checked out. That bat had every characteristic sign of rabies. I understand your compassion in wanting to help them, but please read up on the signs and symptoms. The fact that it was out in daytime is a telltale sign, but it appeared disoriented and became aggressive quickly. It looked like it was seizing. Rabies causes neurological death and paralysis. It was not "catching its breath" and it didn't knock itself out. If that had been the case, the bat would have been out cold, regained consciousness (if it didn't hit the given object hard enough) and flown away. If you don't take my word for it, compare the behavior to any other animal with confirmed rabies. It's not a joke. Especially, when you have small children around. Hope you're alright.

    this is really disturbing, people die from rabies after contact with bats with no discernable wounds, this video needs to be taken down. That was not normal behavior of a bat, not even close, this bat had rabies, it is a miracle one of the children, didn't contract rabies. Just recently here in florida in a town called eustis a 6 year old boy died after handling a bat and in canada a man in his 20's died after contact and neither had wounds you could see. It is almost 100% fatal and the worst way to go you could imagine. Please take this down or edit it to tell people to never touch bats and just because you don't see wounds doesn't mean you are out of the woods, The incubation time for rabies can be as long as a decade so honestly you or family are not out of the woods ether, you should show this to a health professional.

  • @23trekkie
    @23trekkie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This looks really irresponsible. Bats are known carriers of rabies. You found a bat, nocturnal animal, during a day - that's pretty big red flag if you ask me. Grabbing it and trying to feed if by hand is a dumb idea because you get multiple chances of getting bitten and infected. That bite in the back looks dangerous - it's a shorter way to spinal cord, which means shorter incubation period than just biting a hand. I hope you and your kids got the life saving vaccine in time, because once symptomatic, rabies is 100% fatal.

      @@mikey5721That's surprising, I think rabies is just so rare in the UK wildlife, even bats at this point that they didn't bother. With that said a theoretical risk remains in the UK, while most cases were from overseas returners, there are still some bats in the UK that can carry rabies and presumably do, so a theoretical risk remains. I'm surprised they didn't treat this case given rabies is basically 100% fatal if not treated before symptoms. A bat swooping down and biting is also suspect for being rabid as that's not normal behaviour.

  • @David35445
    @David35445 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You are a brave man Richard. In my neck of the wood the little browns are confirmed rabies carriers, mind you so are the skunks and raccoons. If ya get bit you have to cut the head off the critter and send it to Manitoba for testing, by the time the results get back you've been foaming at the mouth and seeing unicorns for about a week. Keep the videos coming!

A new manufactured 'virus' will claim the lives of millions but it will be the 'cure' which kills and not the fake virus which will only be real on mainstream media.

    If bitten by an unvaccinated animal the animal must be sent to a lab to see if it had rabies. It doesn't matter that UK bats eat only insects. It could still have rabies. Any mammal can become infected with rabies and bats are common carriers.

  • @rangerstl07
    @rangerstl07 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No, no, Richard, no. That was a bad idea. In North America bats and other critters can carry rabies. I don't know about England, but it can't be good. Please see a doctor soon if not immediately. Find the bat if possible, that's the only way to be sure. Animals acting strangely or becoming active outside their normal routine hours is a sign of sickness. Please see a doctor.

    Ok here is the where the confusion started. I understood it as you take the next number in line where it states 'COMMENTS'- (#) and just add the next one. I was not aware and ,please excuse me if I was wrong, that you had to go through and read all the comments to see if and who would have put in the next comment with an actual number. In others words, I thought we were to use the youtube tally that is located under the video. Sorry everyone if I was or am wrong.. My bad.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the original plan when I announced the give away videos but as comments started randomly coming in with all sorts of numbers on that video it became apparent that system would not work. I will announce how it will work in the upcoming give away video. Basically I will ask people to pick a random number between 1-100 then let that run for 7 days before picking a winner. That way it won't be affected by comment lag or other issues highlighted during the video about the give aways which some people thought was a give away video.

    I've enjoyed all your videos over the last few years, but having done licensed bat work for over a decade I'm afraid I was cringing during this video. If you find another bat (in the UK) please call the Bat Conservation Trust helpline on 0845 1300 228. This will provide immediate free advice, and will put you in contact with a local licensed bat worker who will come out if necessary to retrieve the bat, check it over, care for it if appropriate and release it if/when it's OK. All these bat workers are local volunteers and you're not charged for this service.
    I know it's very tempting to try to help grounded bats, but anything other than absolutely minimum handling to move them out of immediate danger is strictly against the law, and likely to lead to prosecution if reported. Bats are also easily accidentally damaged if handled by those not trained and licensed to do this.
    I'm not trying to criticise you unfairly as I know what it's like when you see an animal apparently in distress or at risk. But I just wanted to take this opportunity to publicise the correct approach in such circumstances which won't leave you open to prosecution, especially having posted the video on TH-cam, and will also give the best chance of the bat surviving unharmed.
    Regarding the issue about rabies, I suggest you look at the following link: www.bats.org.uk/pages/-bats_and_rabies-1099.html
    Keep up the good work, but please, no more videos involving bats!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      While many uploaders would have stupidly deleted this comment you are 100% right and luckily the bite didn't break the skin.
      I definitely should have been more careful especially since I had suspected weils disease a few years ago which nearly killed me. That started the great rat purge of 2004 and the battle continues as we have a huge pond which attracts them when I'm feeding the ducks in the colder months.
      I will add the conservation trust details to the video description and although I can add bat to the list of animals I've been bitten by it was possibly a lucky escape.
      Glad you appreciate the videos - thanks for watching.

      I always think it's particularly gruesome that the onset of rabies symptoms depends upon how long it takes the virus to get from the site of the bite to your central nervous system. Lovely! I think you're very unlikely to have it, but just keep it in mind for up to the next 12 months just in case you feel unexpectedly poorly. It may be worth getting a referral through your GP to get a fluorescent antibody test just to put your mind at rest, although apparently the test isn't 100% accurate. Fortunately I don't come across many jellyfish where I am; they sound much worse than bats!

    You can disturb bats during the day and they will get active..for instance if there in a tree and you go under with a loud mower so something..they will most likely fly away but could bite if too agitated..but if you see a lone bat just hanging out in the day time,most likely there's something wrong with it..not always but most the time..I will say though,especially with your family this was a big chance you took!
