  • I recently covered the BattleTech Beginner Box, the BattleTech tabletop board game, and compared its contents and rules to the base game. Many viewers have asked for more details on base game, "BattleTech: A Game Of Armored Combat" as a result. Okay! Because YOU requested it, let’s crack open the BattleTech tabletop board game core set, for an official introduction to the game! Let's also compare and contrast this BattleTech to it's Beginner Box.

    The Beginner Box provides a comprehensive-enough experience for a new player to do more than just get their feet wet. But if you really want the FULL tactical BattleTech tabletop board game experience, the base box is definitely worth looking into. The Base Box take the concepts introduced in the Beginner version, and adds in several more technical rules, such as tracking your mech’s heat build up, weapon allocation and critical hit locations, the inner structure of your mech that its armor protects, advanced combat options, additional consequences of damage, and more.
    For those who may not be familiar with BattleTech, it’s a tactical wargame in which players command squads giant war machines called Battle Mechs, operated by courageous (some may say foolish) pilots called Mech Warriors. The game system includes details such as varying weapon ranges, heat generation, and specific hit locations - such as torso, head, arms, and leg - each having its own strategic value. The game is typically played on maps featuring pre-printed hex grids, but optional rules for hexless games are also available.
    Whereas the Beginner Box included eight cardboard standees and two plastic Mechs, the Base Box include nine cardboard standees and eight plastic Mechs. These being a range of light to heavy mechs, including: BattleMasters, Awesomes, Thunderbolts, Catapults, Wolverines, a Griffin, the iconic Shadow Hawk, Commandos, and my personal all-time favorite, the Locust.
    Also included in the tabletop board game are copyable record sheets for each of those Mechs, two two-sided paper hex-based maps, some additional terrain to modify those maps, two six-sided dice, a short story called “Eyestorm”, a fourteen-page Primer booklet full of flavor text about the BattleTech universe, a two-sided cardboard reference sheet listing modifiers - to-hit locations - and other roll results, eight two-sided MechWarrior cards with a different stats on each side for a total of sixteen different characters, eight two-sided Alpha Strike cards - also with different stats on each side, and a full-color 56 page rule book covering setup, movement, combat, damage resolution, heat, piloting, falling, different scenarios, and (one of my personal favorite aspects of the game) rules for constructing your own custom-made Mechs.
    It would take quite a while to cover all of the rules that are introduced in the base game. So, here’s a general overview, in case you’re curious about what the base game adds into the mix. First off, the map introduces several new features such as terrain types, elevation and water, each of which will have an affect on the ability of your Mech to travel and survive.
    And Mechs will have more options as they move about, such as walking forwards and backwards, running, jumping, submerging underwater, laying prone, and pivoting their torsos to widen their range.
    There’s also more considerations when it comes to combat, such as more specific weapon ranges and firing arcs, elevation modifiers, and line of sight restrictions. There’s also many more options for physical combat, like kicking, punching, shoving, and the ever present Death From Above.
    This is a game that has captured my imagination for over 30 years. And, thanks to the quality and comprehensiveness of this edition of the game, I suspect the major houses of the Inner Sphere will still be around, piloting giant, mechanized warriors as they battle for control of distant landscapes, thirty years from now.

    It is interesting to see that CGL took the previous two print runs of the introductory box and split it into two. The lamented "over simplified" rules from the current Beginners Box have been around for over 10 years in what was essentially the "Quick start" rules booklet from the introductory box, while the full* rules from the latest AGOAC box were also included in the introductory box as the 'main' rules. Really the only thing that has changed is the graphic design and layout.
    For this reason, it is a bit disheartening to see that CGL cheaped out with AGOAC when compared with the introductory box, reducing the model count substantially while increasing the quality of what remained (a fair trade) but also dropping other components that were included in the introductory box such as the large poster map, the additional card reference sheets and most importantly, downgrading the card fold-out map boards to paper ones.. all the while increasing the RRP.
    Also I wonder how players who come to tabletop Battletech from the recent video game will find it - the initiative system is quite different in the video game (and better IMHO) but most importantly there was the ability to target specific locations on an enemy mech, controlled by a resource that would ultimately allow this to happen perhaps one activation every 2-3 turns, giving the player more agency when it comes to combat without leaving them at the mercy of the RNG at all times. Except in very specific circumstances (prone / shut down) you can't do this in the rules presented in the box and while this does force your to pay more attention to facings, you are still at the mercy of the dice at all times and this is particularly galling with high damage, high heat weapons.

      You can still increase the odds of hitting a particular spot on an enemy 'mech by positioning yourself to their sides. Attack from the left and you guarantee that you'll hit their left side. For instance, it's a good idea to go after Griffins from the right, all their weapons are on that side.
      Also, I much prefer getting eight really nice minis to the pile of crummy, poorly-molded minis in the previous sets. That's just my personal preference, the new minis are very, very nice.

      After cracking open my "pair" of Box sets and being a dinosaur I can say that most of the local newer players were actually quite interested in the game. Been running a few small demos and planning on doing a few larger afternoon games in the coming months with them but a lot of our local 40k group actually picked up the beginners at the very least if not the full box set.
      Most of them are seeing it as a cheap side game right now to their 40k addiction, and its bridged a gap between some of the older "traditional" gamers at our FLGS and the newer 40k/Sigmar players. The models are top notch, even though they are single pose, and the beginner rules are an excellent pathway into the more complex rules.
      Overall I think if CGL can follow this up with more plastic/smaller box sets and redesigns you may see an good uptick in what has been a waning game.

      @@kevshabunas523 It seems GW has been following the EA route to a point I see players in youtube talking about leaving 40K and selling their collection, or just not playing. The new mech miniatures as a significant upgrade to previous ones. But probably not up to the 40K level. However I feel that in time they will discover the magic of BT gameplay. If you see fans of anime or mecha, combining tabletop with Mechwarrior Destiny seems appropriate. It is not the most perfect role playing game, but it serves very well the process to deliver a narrative to anime or mecha fans, instead of a purely ludic tabletop game. Those who like DnD will find Destiny not good, but its simplicity will be appealing to anime fans who do not want to track lots of statistics.

    Glad to see that Battletech has been making a comeback. For a long time it seemed that Computer games and MMORPGs had killed off any reasonably complex board game; I played since the mid-80s and gave it up back in the early 2000s because no one locally played any more. Seems like with the re-emergence of D&D and its popularity a lot of the great board games and RPGs of the 80s and 90s have seen a huge explosion among millennials and Gen Zs...

      Those mini should have another run, probably out of resin. Perhaps with weapon bits? For example, ACs for Catapults or launchers for Urbanmechs.
      In any case. You hold on dearly to those miniatures. They should be a family heirloom.

If I like it- I buy more- more minis, the core set, etc. If I don't- I give it away or put it on my shelf. These beginner sets are a great way to get new players. The best thing to do if you are not sure if it is for you is to try out the Battletech computer game. It can be downloaded from Steam or Gog.com and covers most of the game play factors in an easy to understand style with a tutorial. There is a single player campaign included which eases you into the game in terms of the complexity of the rule sets and makes it easy for you to get to grips because it does all the calculations for you such as heat scales, damage rolls, etc.

    * Has instructions to use pilot cards
    * Has 1 map sheet

    Both sets have timeline flyers, mini novels and rulebooks to make you think it is a complete set.

    I used to love playing this back in the 80's (still have a few of my old beautiful Ral Partha metal miniatures somewhere). The base box seems closest to the original release, before we went through the different era versions and the Clan invasion era and the Omni-Mechs (game changer, the things were lethal and limitlessly modifiable). The 2018 PC game of the same name, is actual not a bad conversion of the board game, and feels more like playing the table top than the Mechwarrior games do (still great games though). Remember lakes are your best friends for controlling heat, especially if you sporting PPC's, also never over fill on ammo - or you're a walking bomb!!!!

    If you liked the free Alpha Strike intro rules, check out the official BattleTech Master Unit List (masterunitlist.info) and get Alpha Strike cards for nearly every single mech ever published. For the standard rules, several unofficial mech-builder and record sheet programs are really easy to find too, to speed up that process.
    Now if you REALLY wanted to start going down a rabbit hole of rulebooks, there's Total Warfare (the tournament-level combined-arms rules, if you want to bring in infantry, tanks, etc.) or the BattleMech Manual (a compilation and condensation of mech-related rules from Total Warfare and its expansions, if you want to keep the focus on the stompy robots). Either one of those is a logical next step for somebody wanting to expand on the boxed set. Or, since the core game has barely changed in over thirty years, you can also grab older rulebooks lying around from the FASA days and still play it just fine.
    P.S.: I haven't played Crusaders enough to know how well they handle heat, but I know a typical Stalker pilot pushing all the buttons has more than a 1/4 of exploding himself like the world's most horrifying fireworks display. Love it or hate it, heat is probably one of the more important concepts this game has, adding a fresh layer of risk v. reward when you start declaring weapons fire.

Whole new rule set, whole new universe, whole host of new models to paint and mess around with. Customisation of the models is basically non existent but that's not the worst thing in the world when pretty everything is standardised for simplicity of production though I thing you can get different load outs but requires completely different model

But when you add your Locust to a lance in a non flat terrain, you may want a Locust to attack the Awesome 8Q. Try to isolate the Awesome, place your Locust in the left arc, 2 hexagons away from the Awesome, and this giant will suffer death by a thousand mosquito bites.

      @martinlarouche4418 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Siygess Total Warfare was not the full version either.
      For the complete version, you have to go back to the Fasa days.
      There were rules for playing with a double-blind system, where you could not know the location of enemy units on the map, but could use thermographic and seismic sensors to spot them.
      Rules for mech interaction with lava, a campaign system, rules for aerial support with mixing ground with outerspace fighter and capital ship battles together, rules for experimental weapons and systems (energy shields were introduced in prototype form [even though they did not work really well and were more dangerous than anything to use])... there was so much more to it.
      The golden days of Battletech were the early 90s up to the closure of Fasa. Ever since Fanpro and Catalyst got the license, they just keep putting the same books over and overmthat were released before, just with new editing.
      They've barely put anything trully new for the game for the last 18 years... but at least they are keeping it in print.

    I played this in the 80s. Just the box set, paper maps, cardboard mechs and imagination. The problem now is that if you look for other players, the game has to evolve into painted minis and 3-D hex tiles without printed hexes and of course, meta trash. Something that ruins casual gaming. This seems to be the trend. You box will go unused and you will be forced to spend money just to play.
