Congratulations to both of you and welcome to the universe. If you've not heard of Tex talks Battletech, I'd strongly suggest looking him up, his videos on the Ameris Civil War, the fall of the Star League and the rise of the first Battlemech are minute for minute some of the most cinematographically complex, informationally dense, and entertaining vids on TH-cam. (It also saves a couple hours of wiki crawling). I mean, I can't wait to see what this new Battletech golden age leads to in the way of lore vids, but he was doing it before it was cool. -he's also a class act, raising a great deal of coin for charity.

This is the first of a planned series of videos exploring the BattleTech universe. I deliberately kept it short and simple and glossed over many details. In the future I'll expand on all of this but for now, this is a starting point into a series that's currently experiencing a bit of a renaissance.
And because I know someone will mention it if I don't, yes I used a picture of Katrina's daughter Melissa. It wasn't an accident. Unfortunately she was a character that didn't make it out of the 1980s and art of her is of... questionable quality.

Steiner is literally Murica in Space, Lao is Literaly CCP in Space, Kurita is Literally Imperial Japan in Space and the FWL sounds a lot like the Imperium with its Buracracy and Pranoia LOl.

Kurita was always my favorite
I think they're probably mine too. They start out as mustache-twirling villains, but as the story develops they become a lot more nuanced.

I love 40k lore and was going to buy my first guardsmen, but Games Workshop did what they did, and after watching a few Arch streams I bought the battletech beginner box yesterday.
It's a real shame GW made the decision they did but it's nice to see so many new people coming to BT. Hope you find something to enjoy about it.

Ah, BattleTech, one of my favorite franchises. I've enjoyed all the MechWarrior games (except the first, which I never played), MechCommander, and I even like the oldschool board game, although it's so complex that it's hard to find people willing to play it. MechWarrior 5 was good fun, though the latter part of the game went downhill when it required lots of grinding to be able to make it through the later missions. The new BattleTech video game sounded promising, but moved too slowly for my taste, and the story didn't really grab me because I just didn't get invested in the fate of the Aurigan Reach. Regardless of all that, if this video is a prelude to some kind of BattleTech-related playthrough, that's quite exciting.
Remember back in January when you said, "You should play some more BattleTech." I agreed, so I've been planning this as my next project after RA2. What I didn't expect was a three month hiatus to delay it so long but here we are. It's a franchise I love so I'll be showing it some more attention in the near future.
There was an online campaign community that made a java client to run campaigns and set up fights - mekwars.
The most robust of these servers was named megameknet i believe
If this is the primer, "battletech fan" channel is the visual guide to the tabletop game rulebook. Rules are intimidating. But with the visual guide that is no more.
Ahhh, I love the battletech series. Hands down one of my favorites ever since I was a kid. I really enjoyed playing Mechcommander/Desperate Measures expansion and Mechcommander 2. Wish they could have also made a base building variant of it though!

This was the one that started it all. I only ever envisioned making this single 10 minute video to help with the 40K exodus that was going on at the time. Could never imagine that it would become the focus of the channel or that I would make another 24 hours of content on BT.

Yes but that doesn't have it's origins in 3025. It's a situation that develops during the Warrior Trilogy.
@@SvenVanDerPlank it was st ives Mercantile league first during the 2240's they are invaded by the capellans in 2247 since then they dont really like being on the capellan confederation go read the books about justin allard and his son kai allard liao.
Again, this video is set in 3025.
I know the story. You're referring to the Warrior Trilogy, the books I referenced in my last comment. Kai Allard-Liao is way later.
Capellans and St Ives had the most minor of border disputes early on but we're already allies by 2300 in time for the Hegemony-Supremacy War. Their split was a result of events during the 4th Succession War which doesn't begin until 3028. This video is an introduction to the series set in 3025 when St Ives was ruled by Candace Liao, loyal daughter of the Chancellor.
I will cover later events in future videos.

when i was a kid, Mech Assault 2 was my absolute favorite game. what i didn’t realize then was that it was actually a part of a much deeper and richer universe than that one game had shown me. really excited to watch all these videos :))
I had a similar introduction through MechCommander. Was over a decade before I discovered the larger franchise.

I don't know if I ever fully realized just how close to the Clan Invasion the Battletech PC game takes place until now.
I got into battltech because of the 2018 PC game. I'm now playing MechWarrior 5 and I love the lore behind battltech/MechWarrior
I've only ever played the one game myself (MechCommander) but it remains an all time favourite. I mean to play more, will probably end up posting some playthroughs on the channel at some point.

I plan to make a video on this.
If you want to start at the beginning (3025) then you can read the Gray Death Legion for some small mercenary unit action which eases you in to the universe (but is a bit naff at times, it's aimed at teens), or jump straight to the Warrior Trilogy which is much more about political machinations and grand strategy. It advances the timeline to 3030.
Most people agree that Wolves on the Border is the best book (myself included, it's brilliant) but personally I think it is a terrible place to start since it benefits greatly from being more familiar with the setting and characters. Read it between books 2 & 3 of the Warrior Trilogy for the best narrative flow.
Some people want to jump straight into the clan era (think of it as Season 2) because of the games, in which case you want Blood of Kerensky trilogy.

It's a niche thing but I'm a big fan of the franchise. It's been around over 35 years now so there is an incredible depth to the lore.

People were saying to move to BattleTech which I didn't know what it was and then your video pops up in my subscriber queue

Oh man, I’ve been playing Battletech since the 90’s. Just recently getting back into it gain..Hopefully I can get some peeps back into it.
Wow!!!, when i first start Mechwarriors 5: Mercs few months ago, i never thought that this game would have such an interesting, deep and comlex lore attached to it; i thought it was just a "'Mech pilot simulator" and little else. The truth is that I am impressed and i love it.
Ironic that the Capellans have no separatist movements given the events in the near future. :P
Also, interesting choice showing the Aurigan Directorate. I'll be curious to see how this plays out in future videos. :)
Capellans are like "anything you can do, I can do better."
As for the Aurigan Directorate, it was almost an accident. I've never played the HBS game (though I mean to one day) but I'm aware of what happens in it. I meant this as an intro to the series set in 3025 and in that year the Directorate was in charge so I included them without even thinking. That's not really the introduction to that region of space I should have done but at least it's factually accurate.
@@SvenVanDerPlank Fair enough. :) If you ever get the time, and like turn based strategy, I would recommend the HBS game. It's not perfect by any means but I definitely enjoyed it (at least when I wasn't getting ambushed by SRM carriers in a city, lol).

Man, I never thought the DOS-era battletech game I played as a kid would ever grow into this. Pretty sweet story and setting. May have to dump 40k--or rather dump GW
Crescent hawks revenge was my first introduction to BT and I was hooked. I still have my heavy Lance of “unseen” mechs that they stopped producing of those models.

I just started playing Mechwarrior online a few days ago and it’s the closest I can come to to a Warhammer 40k titan. But I have enjoyed the game so much I thought I’d check out the lore and so far it’s very cool. I love that earth is also called Terra but instead of the 31 millennium it’s the 31st century nice haha

Erm, not really? Steiners social general problem was always with their mid-to-high-level officer corps. The LCAF actually consistently had some of the best NCOs and low-level officers of the Inner Sphere, just because they're the ones who have to fix all the fuckups of their nepotistic, incompetent superiors and keep things running in spite of them.

They've been on my list for years. I've never touched any of them before except MechCommander which remains to this day one of my favourite games ever.
@@SvenVanDerPlank i recommend MechWarrior 4: Vengeance, it great and honestly i dont think you be able to get any of the earlier games to work anymore
I've managed to get the first two running in DOSBox but I think MW3 on modern hardware is extremely tricky. Pretty sure the MechCommander games run just fine on Windows 10. I want to check out the newer ones as well, but this is all things for the future.
