I like how the idea of using a sketchbook as a safe place to practice was emphasized. I'm the type of person who enjoys going back through the previous pages to see what I've created but I also came to realize that if I have this mindset of "I won't go back to this page later on to criticize my work" as I am about to draw, I get this so called "fear" of the new page, out of my shoulders. It is as thinking you're going to tear out the page and throw it away after the piece is finished, just so you continue with the next one. This is a way that has helped me to focus on the habit of practicing and giving it the relevance it deserves, compared to the ✨final/finished work✨ idea. Keep up the great content!
Yes! I also love that it's a safe space to create, explore and grow as an artist. I love that you like to go back through your sketches and see how you grow! Such a great way to learn even from your past self :) Thank you so much for your comment - I enjoyed reading it and getting other artist's ideas and thoughts!!
I saw Alex Hilkurtz use a sketchbook of very, very cheap brown paper to practice and mess around the perspective of his urban scenes. Seeing him use a very cheap book as a practice run, and seeing him draw quickly and without caring about the quality of his lines, has inspired me to do the same. I use a notebook of cheap brown paper to practice my drawing skills. I give limited attention to how I approach the subject, I just start drawing. I use pens, not pencils, to force my self not erase any mistakes; I just draw around them or totally ignore them.
That is such a brilliant idea!! I've used scrap papers to sketch quickly, but love this idea of cheap books to practice on and to use pens and just go for it. Thank you for sharing this awesome tip!! I'm also going to check out Alex Hilkurtz now too :)

Thanks for advocating for messing up our sketchbooks. Even after hearing this advice time and time again, it’s still very difficult for me to do that 😂.
I just started watching your videos. You do such great sketchbooks. I love your ideas, too. Thank you.
Glad you like them!
Love this so much ❤❤❤

@@jaclynbaerart Welcome! I love his sketching and painting style. It’s very difficult for me to emulate his style, but I might get there someday. 🙂

Of course! It's always a good reminder to hear - I tell myself that every time I open my sketchbook!
Thank you!!!
