Obi-Wan Kenobi I agree. It wasn’t the kind of star wars music you’re used to, but it was a nice change. I love when different composers are brought in for Star Wars media. Nothing can ever beat John Williams, but some of the music (like the score for Rogue one) made by other composers has been great.
Just wanted to add, Anakin and Obi-Wan's hair actually does change with their costumes in mid season 3. Anakin's hair is a bit longer, and the part in Obi-Wan's hair shift from on the left side of his head to over his left eyebrow.
Also noteworthy in Downfall of a Droid they used fully armored clones on the bridge of the venator instead of officers which would require more work to animate realistic face movement.
I hope we see Grievous' redesign. They could show him capturing Palpatine to lead into RotS. It would be good for Grievous to finally get a win in this series, they nerfed him into the ground from 2d clone wars.
Everything in 2d clone wars was insanely op and "cartoonish" Mace windu alone took out an entire army of droids in one episode. It's supposed to be over the top and crazy, while 3d clone wars is more "realistic." I do wish there were more dominant grievous moments.

He put an insane amount of his own money into the project, more than they'd ever get back in ads on Cartoon Network. So CW ended up becoming one of the best animated 3D shows once they started hitting their stride.

Clone wars episode where I would say the animation was at its “Worst” was the episode _Downfall of a droid,_ I don’t know why but it feels like they cut costs on that episode so the next one _Duel of the Droids_ would look better in comparison. Not that season 1’s animation was terrible, it just lacked certain elements that Later seasons thankfully improved upon. Season 1 is still great, just not as Spectacular as the seasons after it. And their are noticeable evolutions in the quality of the animation as well, and Season 7 may be the highest quality we have seen thus far just from the trailers alone, and I’m looking forward to the end product.
I think you cant blame them cuz their using untested previs technology and programs and their studios werent setup. As for later seasons looking better by an order of magnitude, they were able to partner with CGCG taipei and they pulled most of the animation weight
Ryan Kwong oh I don’t blame them for experimenting, Season one was the test for what kind of Style and Design they could use for Clone wars, and I’d say that the Design came through spectacularly, along with that we also got beautifully created Atmospheres that make each location feel unique, and along with that as the Show went on it made a Noticeable Character design change. I believe the first episode that made the transition to different outfits for characters like Anakin, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan was the episode _“Heroes on both sides.”_

I think they were trying to showcase the brightness of the medical room along with making the visuals somewhat murky to give you an idea of Anakin's visual perspective after just waking up. But it still looks pretty bad. The overexposure of the lighting makes the character's faces look faded and the environment around bright to the point of being blinding.
Anakin's hair does change a little bit with the costume change, it gets a little bit longer I think at some point. Sort of like a midway point between the Clone Wars movie hairstyle and the mullet that we all know and love that he's going to have in season 7
1:58 I believe this scene has different lighting because of a concussion effect Anakin maybe had after waking up and being injured. I think the animators wanted to give that kind of feel a bit by adding too much lighting to the scene. The rest of the episode did not have this effect, while it did look unfinished though.
The episodes where the geonosian brain worms infect Barris' and Ahsoka's transport had one moment of animstion thay was odd to me. When Ahsoka drops from the vent. After Barris passes where Ahsoka is hiding Ahsoka jumps down turns her head and stalks away. The animation is kinda too realistic to me considering it was season 2 and the moment was a bit too fluid for the at the time fairly stilted animation. Love the shot though.
It's fascinating how you never notice the improvement of the animation as you progress through each season but then you look back and see how much has changed
When I see that scene from Downfall of a droid I always just assumed that was the shows way of indicating Anakin was delirious from his injuries, and adjusting after returning to consciousness. Though I have always agreed the animation got much better as the series went on. I particularly liked the way Season 3 looked after they changed outfits, and one of the first times I remember truly admiring how far they had come was the Mortis Arc opening when I recognize they actually had most of the Jedi Council seats filled instead of having the room half empty as they had it up to then. By the deception arc of season four it actually felt like a living breathing universe again to me. The lighting and animations were superb, they had enough background characters to fill in all the shots, and everything felt like it could have come right out of the film universe.
Agree. The med bay scene still looked bad, but it never looked that out of place to me considering the context. I actually didn't have a problem with how early season Clone Wars looked since the stories were interesting enough to keep me engaged. And While I adored the visual improvement, it honestly took me a while to adjust to Anakin and Obi-Wan's s3 redesigns, because not only had I loved Anakin's short hair, but the mass of hair at the back of their heads was now so smoothed over that it funnily enough looked worse than it had before, because it looked like someone had just glued it all together and slapped it on there like a helmet. The early season style was great in that regard because the hair was blocked off into big strands separated by bold lines, which fit the rest of the style very well. That minor gripe of mine aside, the improved facial animations alone made up for that if you ask me, aswell as fluidity of movements, action, lighting and literally everything else.
It wasn't mentioned but in the season when Darth Maul was reintroduced, they had to do an overhaul to their animation in order to capture better facial expressions for Maul because it was a heavy part of his character. As well as to enhance the smoothness of body movements for combat.
If the dialogue and many scenes were changed, then it would be good. Just listen to some of the quotes in Battlefront 2 done by the Clone wars cast. The ones from the prequels aren't that great listen to
Glad I'm not the only one. A good remake in the modern Clone Wars style, with less corniness, some of the useless and bad stuff of the movies cut out and giving the actually interesting scenes more room to breathe, aswell as making Anakin's fall much more gradual than it was in ROTS, would be absolutely incredible. While I actually like most prequel lightsaber battles (more so than those in the OT tbh), they all just PALE in comparison to what animation can do to make the Jedi and Sith move like the badasses with super senses they actually are. Clone Wars action scenes are truly a sight to behold. It proooobably won't happen, but hey, we can dream :)
I watched the 8 unfinished reels, and I can confirm that Grievous IS in season 7, in the Utapau arc. If you haven't seen them, EVERYTHIG is finished except the graphical details, & the animations are basic/rough. Everything (minus graphics) in the reels are done: The music, sound effects, voices, camera angles, camera movements, camera shots. And even some facial expressions.
The reason he said grievous might not appear is because we only know of 2 arcs for sure in season 7 on Disney+. There’s still four episodes that we don’t know exactly what they are about. Could be the utapau arc but it’s not confirmed.
actually, in Anakin's season 3 look, the hair was changed. It was made a little bit longer and was more smoothed out, and you can also see it going over his ear a little bit, where it wasn't in seasons 1 and 2. Obi-Wan's hair was also changed. The color of red was slightly different, but that was probably a consequence of the newer lighting engine. besides from that, his hair was made much thicker and taller, is made more smooth and maybe a little longer as well.
The "poor" lighting in the clip shown two minutes in was intentional to show the emotional effect that the reveal that R2 was gone was supposed to have on fans initially.
What I love about the show is that it looks like a 3D version of genndy tartakovsky's art style for the clone wars with clean cut shaped blocky edges which looks amazing instead of that eye burning plastic crap that rebel looks like.
Corpy Hogan rebels is trash. Failed on that part and so many others. And the way they ruined lightsabers is gross. Is that a blue light up tooth pick or the most dangerous weapon
Ben Perez III as bad as Rebels looks a lot of the time, things like lightsabers and Vader’s design in the show were based off a lot of the concept art for A New Hope
What really bugged me in the first few seasons was Anakins model. I think his head and neck were too big compared to his body but at least it was consistent
When my sister and I went back and rewatched it all, this was our chief complaint. We wound up joking that Anakin's father was a giraffe! I'm so glad they fixed it
I never realized that the characters were supposed to undergo a second change. I had thought that the initial s3 change was their final design evolution before ROTS. I had even watched all the unfinished episodes, and just assumed that those versions looked so different because they were just the rough models the animators were laying the scenes out with.
I was hoping to see some insight into the actual animation of Clone Wars but just got commentary on the character designs and the change in lighting and effects.
Thank you I’ve been waiting so long for a video on animation in TCW. I like noting the changes over time in the characters since it very directly parallels their character evolution.
Season 1 is pretty much what you'd expect from an early 3D animated series and then season 2 and onwards just became movie quality. It was so long ago that I don't remember noticing a difference, nor did I care, season 1 and 2 were just fun, kind of meaningless adventures and that's what I liked about it. The other seasons were great but I remember watching them alone and in silence by choice, with season 1 and 2 I just watched it with friends as we got ridiculously overhyped over the action. Season 1 and 2 made me feel like a kid in a good way, in the later seasons, though I liked them and the story is definitely better, and of course I'm hyped about season 7, way better than anything Rebels would do. I just feel like Season 1 and 2 were about being a fun adventure based on Star Wars whereas the later seasons focused more on expanding the Star Wars universe Watching the two feels more different than simple animation differences.
I just realised: There are SEVEN forms of lightsaber combat, and there are SEVEN seasons of The Clone Wars. Coincidence? I THINK NOT! I’m kidding I have no idea
If you want a great comparison, look at “The Jedi who knew too much”. Anakin and Ahsoka’s conversation in the pipelines is perhaps the most beautifully animated scene in the entire series.
@@juliaurbanska8318 Season 5 Episode 18 Right around the 20 minute mark. Ahsoka is framed for murder and goes on the run to solve the case herself, but the Republic is on her tail to bring her in. She hides in the sewers to evade some clones, but Anakin cuts her off and tells her to come with him, and she refuses because he didn't try to stick up for her. It's not only one of the best animated scenes in the show, but it's probably the best character development between the two characters, and some of the best voice acting out of both Matt Lanter and Ashley Eckstein.
@@thatkidkawaii1965 Oh, don't get me wrong, Siege of Mandalore is the best of the show no doubt in both animation and story telling. However, there is a clear animation style difference between season 7 and the rest of the series. Season 1-3 is one style, 4-6 is another style but more of an evolution of what come before, looking more like a pixar film in realism and moving away from the original intended "hand painted wooden style", and 7 is a whole different monster on its own because they had done two whole other shows between that time, with both Rebels and Resistance being very different in style to clone wars, and the Lucasfilm animation team working on Season 7 was different from who was working on it on Season 6 in 2012-2013. I still stand by what I said with "The Jedi Who Knew Too Much" because it's still clearly based on that original core style being the highest of that evolution branch of animation given what we had in season 1. But yes, Siege of Mandalore is absolutely stellar.
This tv show was my favourite show when I was younger, what I love about it so much is how it started very child friendly and as the audience grew up the show grew up around us too it got much darker and scarier and more badass and I think it ended brilliantly xx
Well the technology has gotten better and I don't need the armor to hide some of the movement. Also and in Canon explanation if I remember was they stopped wearing the armor 2 because I wanted to soften their image to the public because they realize they was going down a dark road
I seem to remember one time in a behind the scenes video Dave Filoni said they would clone the zillo beast in season 7. too bad we'll probably never get to see that happen
I think the biggest improvement in the animation from 1-6 is the idle animations. Usually when characters weren’t speaking they were rarely moving at all. Small details like breathing and twitchy hand movements are key to idle animation.

I gotta mention, I noticed while rewatching Clone Wars before Bad Batch, they in fact _did_ slightly tweak face models (and textures) for at least Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka in Season 3, alongside the new outfits/body models. I do think something about the Clones' faces were tweaked in Season 3, but it wasn't the fully new model of Season 4 yet, I think it might have just been the textures.
I think the reason that first clip was an attempt to give the room a more sterile/hospital feel. The same thing is done in episode 2 when we first see kamino, episode 3 during the birth scene, and episode 5 when Luke gets hurt. The lighting and shading could have been a lot better though.
So, am I the only one who noticed Obi-Wan’s hair started being combed the opposite way and Anakin’s got a little longer during the first costume change, mid season 3? Or that Ahsoka’s head tails got longer?
Eta2298 its actually part of a episode where I think grievous appears. I can tell you what the cargo is or you don’t want to be spoiled but all I can say is that that it foreshadows the Galactic Empire.
You could make another video follow up that goes into more detail on some of the improvements in animation. The most notable shift in quality, from info I've gathered was at the production of Season 3. This season marked notable improvements such as better character models( new face rigs for Rex and the clones and other) this allowed more expressiveness in animation. Umbara had new elements complex for animation such as fog and different lighting techniques. This is when the animation began to really show its potential. Season 7 even upgraded a bunch of pre-existing models at least from the news at SW celebration. This allows for better character control rigs and even more expressiveness. Notice also more cinematic techniques in the first episode, such as longer uncut shots and more dramatic lighting. These things really caught on with season 3

Agreed. In AMVs I’ve seen that use both TCW and live action scenes, it can be hard to tell which is which with regards to environments.

And While I adored the visual improvement, it honestly took me a while to adjust to Anakin and Obi-Wan's s3 redesigns, because not only had I loved Anakin's short hair, but the mass of hair at the back of their heads was now so smoothed over that it funnily enough looked worse than it had before, because it looked like someone had just glued it all together and slapped it on there like a helmet. The early season style was great in that regard because the hair was blocked off into big strands separated by bold lines, which fit the rest of the style very well. That minor gripe of mine aside, the improved facial animations alone made up for that if you ask me, aswell as fluidity of movements, action, lighting and literally everything else.

They’ve come a long way in just 12 years.
It wasn't mentioned but in the season when Darth Maul was reintroduced, they had to do an overhaul to their animation in order to capture better facial expressions for Maul because it was a heavy part of his character. As well as to enhance the smoothness of body movements for combat.
I'd say I'm a "This is where the fun begins" for season 7, specifically for the Siege of Mandalore.

Glad I'm not the only one. A good remake in the modern Clone Wars style, with less corniness, some of the useless and bad stuff of the movies cut out and giving the actually interesting scenes more room to breathe, aswell as making Anakin's fall much more gradual than it was in ROTS, would be absolutely incredible. While I actually like most prequel lightsaber battles (more so than those in the OT tbh), they all just PALE in comparison to what animation can do to make the Jedi and Sith move like the badasses with super senses they actually are. Clone Wars action scenes are truly a sight to behold. It proooobably won't happen, but hey, we can dream :)

I watched the 8 unfinished reels, and I can confirm that Grievous IS in season 7, in the Utapau arc.
If you haven't seen them, EVERYTHIG is finished except the graphical details, & the animations are basic/rough.
Everything (minus graphics) in the reels are done: The music, sound effects, voices, camera angles, camera movements, camera shots. And even some facial expressions.
The reason he said grievous might not appear is because we only know of 2 arcs for sure in season 7 on Disney+. There’s still four episodes that we don’t know exactly what they are about. Could be the utapau arc but it’s not confirmed.

actually, in Anakin's season 3 look, the hair was changed. It was made a little bit longer and was more smoothed out, and you can also see it going over his ear a little bit, where it wasn't in seasons 1 and 2. Obi-Wan's hair was also changed. The color of red was slightly different, but that was probably a consequence of the newer lighting engine. besides from that, his hair was made much thicker and taller, is made more smooth and maybe a little longer as well.

The "poor" lighting in the clip shown two minutes in was intentional to show the emotional effect that the reveal that R2 was gone was supposed to have on fans initially.
The Utapau arc was one of my favorite arcs and it was a shame it wasn’t finished

What I love about the show is that it looks like a 3D version of genndy tartakovsky's art style for the clone wars with clean cut shaped blocky edges which looks amazing instead of that eye burning plastic crap that rebel looks like.

What really bugged me in the first few seasons was Anakins model. I think his head and neck were too big compared to his body but at least it was consistent
When my sister and I went back and rewatched it all, this was our chief complaint. We wound up joking that Anakin's father was a giraffe!

I never realized that the characters were supposed to undergo a second change. I had thought that the initial s3 change was their final design evolution before ROTS. I had even watched all the unfinished episodes, and just assumed that those versions looked so different because they were just the rough models the animators were laying the scenes out with.

Season 1 is pretty much what you'd expect from an early 3D animated series and then season 2 and onwards just became movie quality.
It was so long ago that I don't remember noticing a difference, nor did I care, season 1 and 2 were just fun, kind of meaningless adventures and that's what I liked about it.
The other seasons were great but I remember watching them alone and in silence by choice, with season 1 and 2 I just watched it with friends as we got ridiculously overhyped over the action.
Season 1 and 2 made me feel like a kid in a good way, in the later seasons, though I liked them and the story is definitely better, and of course I'm hyped about season 7, way better than anything Rebels would do.
I just feel like Season 1 and 2 were about being a fun adventure based on Star Wars whereas the later seasons focused more on expanding the Star Wars universe

If you want a great comparison, look at “The Jedi who knew too much”. Anakin and Ahsoka’s conversation in the pipelines is perhaps the most beautifully animated scene in the entire series.

Ahsoka is framed for murder and goes on the run to solve the case herself, but the Republic is on her tail to bring her in. She hides in the sewers to evade some clones, but Anakin cuts her off and tells her to come with him, and she refuses because he didn't try to stick up for her. It's not only one of the best animated scenes in the show, but it's probably the best character development between the two characters, and some of the best voice acting out of both Matt Lanter and Ashley Eckstein.

@@thatkidkawaii1965 Oh, don't get me wrong, Siege of Mandalore is the best of the show no doubt in both animation and story telling. However, there is a clear animation style difference between season 7 and the rest of the series. Season 1-3 is one style, 4-6 is another style but more of an evolution of what come before, looking more like a pixar film in realism and moving away from the original intended "hand painted wooden style", and 7 is a whole different monster on its own because they had done two whole other shows between that time, with both Rebels and Resistance being very different in style to clone wars, and the Lucasfilm animation team working on Season 7 was different from who was working on it on Season 6 in 2012-2013. I still stand by what I said with "The Jedi Who Knew Too Much" because it's still clearly based on that original core style being the highest of that evolution branch of animation given what we had in season 1. But yes, Siege of Mandalore is absolutely stellar.
This tv show was my favourite show when I was younger, what I love about it so much is how it started very child friendly and as the audience grew up the show grew up around us too it got much darker and scarier and more badass and I think it ended brilliantly xx

I think the biggest improvement in the animation from 1-6 is the idle animations. Usually when characters weren’t speaking they were rarely moving at all. Small details like breathing and twitchy hand movements are key to idle animation.

I gotta mention, I noticed while rewatching Clone Wars before Bad Batch, they in fact _did_ slightly tweak face models (and textures) for at least Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka in Season 3, alongside the new outfits/body models. I do think something about the Clones' faces were tweaked in Season 3, but it wasn't the fully new model of Season 4 yet, I think it might have just been the textures.

I think the reason that first clip was an attempt to give the room a more sterile/hospital feel. The same thing is done in episode 2 when we first see kamino, episode 3 during the birth scene, and episode 5 when Luke gets hurt. The lighting and shading could have been a lot better though.

Eta2298 its actually part of a episode where I think grievous appears. I can tell you what the cargo is or you don’t want to be spoiled but all I can say is that that it foreshadows the Galactic Empire.
You could make another video follow up that goes into more detail on some of the improvements in animation.
The most notable shift in quality, from info I've gathered was at the production of Season 3. This season marked notable improvements such as better character models( new face rigs for Rex and the clones and other) this allowed more expressiveness in animation. Umbara had new elements complex for animation such as fog and different lighting techniques. This is when the animation began to really show its potential.
Season 7 even upgraded a bunch of pre-existing models at least from the news at SW celebration. This allows for better character control rigs and even more expressiveness. Notice also more cinematic techniques in the first episode, such as longer uncut shots and more dramatic lighting. These things really caught on with season 3
