My dad bought me a no8 when I was 9 and I have kept it to this day. I modified it a bit (I carved in my initials) and sharpened it from time to time. Imo the best you can have when you are just looking for a simple working knife. I use it for carving, shrooming and preparing food.
If you're a guy who finds himself cutting a lot of things, youre screwing up if you don't have an opinel. It's not a self defense knife or rugged; it just does a lot of stuff very well.
Opinel actually has a more extensive line of kitchen, gardening and camping knives as well. These include two models of folding saw, a DIY knife with detachable screwdriver bits, a survival knife with whistle in the handle, a folding vegetable peeler, a corkscrew knife, a garlic & chestnut knife, an oyster knife, a mushroom knife with brush, not to mention all the fixed blade kitchen knives. And they are all razor sharp right out of the box! I agree, the only thing they lack is a pocket clip.
In my fifty four years I've had several, lost some, wore out one and have one on order right now. Great cheap knives that exist to be used, not treasured. One of France's greatest icons. No idea what these inches or ounces are though (says the rest of the modern world!)
I recently bought an Opinel #7 in stainless but all my others are the Carbone it takes as sharp an exge as you have tools and ability to make . My EDC is #7 Carbone.
I have no problem with it not looking "tactical". From personal experience, when I hear something described as tactical or milspec or stealth or the like, I envision something that was designed by committee and built by the lowest bidder.
I absolutely love mine and use it all the time. It's been through hell and still very sharp, too. The steel is great, and I love the simple, elegant handle and design.
@@alexha2884 I use mine for mostly daily work, as its nice and light it doesn’t take up much space. Opening boxes, cutting strings, but I’ve also used it a ton for home renovation work - scraping paint and plastic, you name it. It’s a great scraper trust me, this thing keeps its edge. Hell I also peel fruit with mine. It’s just nice to have around.
So much fun to modify too. There might even be a clip mod video for you!!! My No.6 has become my EDC of choice. I have decided I'm not completely sold on pocket clips after losing a couple knives when the clip caught on something. I do have the Italian version on my short list as well.
Love my No 8 and No 10. My EDC N010 fits my hand really well - my grip strength on small diameter handles isn't what it used to be. A great value and a classic. Available with inox (stainless) or carbon steel blades.
The no.8 carbon i bought had a warped blade, it looked like that the logo was stamped so hard thet it bent the blade. and the locking ring would loosen up as soon you would apply any pressure while cutting. I had to do a bunch of work on it just to make it usable. I do like it, it has some really good things going on like weight to blade size ratio and very good slicing abilities if you do light tasks like food prep.
I rotate between a couple of different knives. I have a Kershaw with spring assisted open, but the pocket clip tore up my pants and put holes in my shirts. I started carrying the Opinel again recently, but in my back pocket instead of side pocket. I like that the blade is thinner, I feel like it's less of a wedge and can cut through tape and things easier. It's lighter to carry but the rounder shape would probably make it a pain if I was sitting in a harder chair. Not sure what the best way to carry these is, don't really like them in the side pocket with keys and other items.
There are aftermarket clips made specifically for Opinels you can get, but most cost as much or more than the knife itself. Or you can DIY a universal one with screws and some epoxy or glue in the holes and on the threads to make it more sturdy.
Inox is French for stainless steel. It’s short for inoxidisable. The original knives were carbon steel. Stainless was introduced in 1986 but took a few years to become common. These days both are widely available. Carbon steel is easier to sharpen and gets incredibly sharp. Stainless is better for food prep and doesn’t rust when it gets wet.
Ok, silly question; if you could have only one knife for camping, not talking about weight but performance in various situations, Morakniv or Opinel knife? Curious about your opinions.
Not a silly question, but perhaps the better question is fixed blade vs folding, cause otherwise it's apples to oranges. For light duty and convenience, folding (Opinel). For medium duty and up, fixed-blade.
To me not only best value folder is Opinel but best folding knife is Opinel. Best fixed blade is my Mora Companion no matter the price. I have collected and used many top knives for decades and this is my judgement. Respect from Iran 🇮🇷
I don't know if they make the best knife for the money, but they make a knife with certain features that appeal to certain people. It's not expensive, but price is subjective. Everyone has their own idea of good low price. It's very light weight, well balanced, with a quality blade in either stainless or carbon steel. Some want those features, and some want something else. I like my no. 7, but I have others I like as well
Inox is the short version for "acier inoxydable", i.e. stainless steel. It wouldn't come to any French person's mind to call stainless steel something else as inox. It is pronounced eenox. I've owned many Opinels, from 6 to 12. If you know à better knife for that price (13.90€ for the last #9 I bought in 2023), please tell me.
Ibwanted 1 and when u said stainless steel i know right aeay its junk. U cant sharpen stainless steel. U can if u have a mechanical sharpener and ur at home but u cant just sharpen that junk by hand. I really wanted 1. Ive carried a knife since i was 5 its another part of me and ive learnt stainless is garbage.
the stainless steels ones are not junk, I have one, and it arrived razor sharp out of the box. and you can sharpen stainless steel properly if you take your time . I use Japanese waterstones, 3000 & 8000 grit, and can get my knives scary sharp. Opinel does make carbon steel versions as well, so get one of those and you wont be disappointed.
Stainless steel is not garbage. if you know how to sharpen them properly, you can get them crazy sharp like I do with my Japanese kitchen knives. also, Opinel makes their knives in carbon steel as well, which you can sharpen very nicely as well. and you need to practice manual sharpening if you cant get a decent edge on your knives unless you use a mechanical sharpener. I taught myself how to sharpen freehand , and it was one of the best things I did.
Nope! As a frenchman, i can tell you that the Black Bear knife, which is the Italian Opinel, is better, since you can secure it with one hand. Same price, same look, same sharpness.
acier inoxydable Ay-cee-ay een-oxee-dab-lah. French for stainless steel. Short form is Inox. I own several Opinels, mostly No.8's as I find that to be a very useful pocket size knife. It is one of the very few edc knives I own that has a convex grind on the blade, and yes, it can take a fantastically sharp edge. For the money, there is nothing better.

the locking ring works when the knife is open and closed, that's why it has a cutout on the bottom too
The lock in the closed position is a more recent innovation.
@@yelnats61 the point he made was that it cant lock when closed, which isnt true
He never said it couldn’t be locked while closed in the video.
@@yelnats61 more recent yes, but almost 25 years ago on the other hand
i hate the feeling when you try to open it locked lol 😖
Love this knife and anything that has a simple and functional design. Less is more.
It doesn't even has usb.

My No. 9 fits perfectly in my Buck 110 sheath, the sheath weighs more than the knife.
Best knives ! Got the n°8 in my childhood and I still use it for everything !
After we posted the video, I found out my father in law found one picnicking in a park in Germany on vacation in the 80s. He still has it. So cool.
@@adventure-journal So cool indeed !
My first outdoor ‘adventure’ knife - 50 plus years ago…it’s still in use - great tool!
9 in bugoutbreadbag lol 8 in camp kitchen and over sink. 7 in truck. 6 in dress coin pocket. Best fruit, vegi knives ever!

Gorgeous knives. I own 2. I have totally no use for them though. Just have it to admire the beauty
It is practical looking. It is edc in the truest sense😊
I love opinel knives. Very good quality.
The handles are soft enough to carve out o notch to fit your own belt clip from another knife 👣🦘😁
Opinel blows away other knives. Laughs in the face of the "emperor's new knives".

The number corresponds to the blade length in cm. I.e. Your no9 has a 9 cm blade.
Facepalm. So obvious but didn't know that. SMH. Thanks!
@@adventure-journal the only exception I know being no 13. Which is something like 20cm I believe. Roughly 8 inches
Great knives!
Mine is the no7
In France opinels are 11€ 😅 even cheaper
Ok. I’ve got two #8 Opinel knives. Love them but, my Mora knives are in my opinion the best deal going. You can do more with a Mora.
Look into Mora knives. They make a fixed blade, stainless, non wood handle knife for less than $10 that I would choose over an Opinel any day.
Also thankfully available in carbon steel (in French : Carbone)
Also (#7) my EDC.
That's interesting video my friend big likes 🤠👌👍
