  • The Dillon 750 is a fantastic press but this video describes some minor issues I've had when I upgraded from a Dillon XL650 to a Dillon XL750

    I think I'll stick with my 650. Good video.

    I bought my 650 very shortly after they were announced. I was probably 5000 rounds into loading with it and I had a primer detonation that ran across the waiting primers and up the supply tude which froze the aluminum tube into the inside the safety tube, it also shot the plastic primer rod up into the ceiling of the reloading room. A phone call to Dillon was all that was needed to get new parts on the way to me. The worst of the problem is that it took about 3 days for my hearing to return to normal.

    I bought a used 650 after the 750 was announced. I always wondered if I made the right decision. I'm happy I saw your video. I just use it for small primers and plan on buying turret press for larger primers.

    My xl650 blew up once. It was fully loaded at the time, blew the entire priming system up. Dillon replaced everything for free.It's only happened once, I have the feeling now, it's easier to feel it and stop it before it happens.

    The shuttle primer isn't just case engaged its safer, sympathetic detonations on the telephone dial are an issue, as well as upside down and sideways primers. Crimped primer pockets will pose issues as will most debris on presses. But engineering felt compelled to improve safety and reliability of the press.

    I have the 750 and mainly reload 223 and 9mm. I rarely get any debris in the primer station. I just keep a small re-compressible can of air to quickly clean it out and other areas on the press

    On the 650 which seat/crimp combo die do you have for the 223?

    Did you ever find out what was causing the sound on startup in your ridgeline? Need to know. Thanks!

    My 650 has the Mark 7 auto drive on it and has 200k on it had a 4 primer detonation last year and just had a 26 or so go off and it sent my after market aluminum primer hold down rod thru my gyprock ceiling. I process my brass and was running hard at 850rph never had any issues until I tried to push it a little to fast and use shitty range brass. Trying to decide if the 750 primer system is worth the upgrade but the 650 rotary does move a lot of shit outta the way.

      Yea the 750 avoids detonation but self cleaning 650 is going to be better for speed. Not sure how you set it off. I've smashed primers pretty good on my 650 and have yet to set one off (Knock on wood)

    I like that light you have on the 750. Where did you get it, or could you supply a link? Also I have an older 550 and a 650. After loading for years on the 550 it took a while to get used to the phone dial primer system. I use the 650 exclusively for high volume 9mm and I find that system is much more tolerant of tight/crimped primer pockets and other variations in my range brass. I prefer the phone dial system.

      I have two lights in the video. One is the skylight from inline fabrication and the clamp on style is from Amazon. The clamp on is pretty handy to have around the Reloading bench. www.amazon.com/dp/B016U6ZJI0/ref=cm_sw_r_sm_apa_glt_fabc_RE7TG6RE1JY443S2RVAZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

      @@zerocool4256 thanks for the link I am going to get one and add it to the reloading bench. These old eyes need all the light I can supply.

    Good thinking. Thousands 650's sold and the few that had detonations make it a non issue.

    I’m sorry but I still don’t know what you found as the biggest difference between the two. I know it has something to do with the primer system. 😳🙄🥴🤔

    Yes agree the XL650 is auto cleaning on the primers.

    I despise my Dillon 650, I've been reloading for over 40years. I at least felt vindicated when Dillon came out with the the 750 basically admitting the priming system on the the 650 was/is garbage. The Dillon powder measure(s) , should be called a "Powder Sprinkler" I adapted my toolheads to use Uniflow type powder measures with Hornady "case activated powder drops" to stop the rain of powder everywhere. I've spent a small fortune buying parts trying to make my 650 stop popping primers, crushing cases, and breaking decapping pins. Dillon support is less than worthless, just a bunch of condescending jerks. It had gotten to the point where I was only using the 650 for processing brass, but it's not even capable of that. I find myself using the Dillon 650 less and less as it is not reliable and just a huge PITA, and back to my Turret and Rockchucker. No way I'll reward incompetency with buying another Dillon to solve a problem with another POS, the 750 can rot as far as I'm concerned.
    Oh BTW you might want to remove the computer from the reloading bench. ANY DISTRACTION is a bad thing while reloading the computer offers far too many of them.

      My experience with my 650 is completely opposite of yours. Mine is from the early production. Also Dillon has sent me parts for free. One was the tub for the media separator when I left it sit on some stuff and it deformed.

    • @Physics072
      @Physics072 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow, you must have a old 650, I have XL650 (with the zerk fittings) (3 years old) none of the issues you have said. So ez on 9mm, 450bm etc.
      I'll pay shipping and take it off your hands if your done with it.

    • @MagnumMuscle1000
      @MagnumMuscle1000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 650 is pretty sensitive to setup, and if you get it wrong it does suck. There are lots of moving parts and things that need to be adjusted just right or the system locks up. I would bet you haven't learned to adjust it correctly (which definitely can be frustrating).

    • @geeck41
      @geeck41 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MagnumMuscle1000 Dillon replaced the POS 650 with the 750 even Dillon thought the 650 sucked. I'll never own another Dillon so it really makes no difference to me.
      Dillon's prices are ridiculous and support just this side of worthless. I've been rolling my own ammo since 1976. I reload 4-5 thousand rounds a year mostly rifle rounds. I think I know what I'm doing , an engineer by trade.
      I bought the 650 Dillon from someone who never could get it to work reliably . He packed back in the original box . When I got it was like new. I had marginal success with it reloading 7.62x51mm. When I switched platforms and move to 5.56x45mm that's when my nightmares really started.
      This 650 has nickle and dimed .... no $10 and $20 dollar, me to death and its still a POS
      But thinking you could possibly be right .I had a Blue Bleeder who owns a few 650's and a 750 look at it. He pronounced it a POS too. But the treatment I got from Dillon I'd never buy another.

      To me the 650 is a cleaner design. If you redesign a product without considering the aftermarket options that your customers use you get something like the 750
