I'm taking a big chance now - after retiring early and unexpectedly but needing an income, we invested in a CNC router and now I'm learning about woodworking! 😂
Absolutely love that weave design which is why I watched your video in the first place. Great job explaining the whole process. And I love the fact that you get multiple boards by starting out with long boards. I hadn’t seen that before.
Yesterday I took a chance by traveling and having an adventure by myself! I was nervous and went back and forth, but took the plunge and am so glad I did!! It was an awesome time and met some amazing people and animals.
This is a great video. It was put together well and was very informative. The last time I took a huge chance in my life was quitting my job and investing in myself. It has been 7 years since doing so. My woodworking business is doing OK. More importantly, I am much better in my health and as a person. Keep those videos coming. They have re-inspired me to do more woodworking projects.
I've retired from custom cabinet making. Now starting to use up some of my rough cut boards from trees I've harvested over the years. Looking to make cutting boards, charcuterie boards and cheese slicers. Plus I have blanks to make bowls and vases. Ive only made one attempt to make a wavy cutting board, but I didn't overlay the pieces to cut.
This is a great video on creating the weave design. Thanks for sharing! A chance I took was in 2018 we (wife and 4 kids) sold our house bought a truck and a fifth wheel and went to KY for a year and did Christian outreach at a RV park . Short version
This is so cool, do you still RV. my wife and I bought a class C 2 years ago and are getting into enjoying the RV life. not full time but free to take off anytime. we raised 9 kids, all home schooled until 9th or 10th grade then gave them the option to go to public school. 6 of the 9 now work in our family business and we are free to travel.
Great vid. This will be my first cutting board attempt, a Valentines gift for my wife. Last time a took a chance was putting new brakes on my truck … an hour ago 😅
My father would have been 100 years old today. I took a chance and reached out to all my remaining family to celebrate his memory - tears and smiles. The off cut slices are going to be another board, I guess. Cheers Terry
I’m glad you took that chance. Thank you so much for sharing. For me, family is always first. Sometimes it’s definitely hard, but I try to keep that in mind.
Well done. I liked your presentation and your finished product. The last time I took a chance was yesterday. It was my 79th birthday and we went for a five mile run/hike on Mt. Palomar and it was equal parts uphill and downhill-over the chosen course . Since I was the oldest in the group by 10 years, it was “chancey” whether I could keep up.
You made that look easy. I am going to take a chance and try to make those boards! The last time I took a chance was applying for a promotion last year. It worked out!
Wow! Those boards are beautiful! I am a hobbyist woodworker with very little space. Do you think it would be possible to make those with a jigsaw instead of a bandsaw? Thanks again!
Nice video. Liked the process and instructions. Besides trying to redo my garage this is the last time I took a chance by watching your video and commenting 😊. Keep up the good work and videos!!
Really enjoyed the video. I always wondered how the weave was made in those cutting boards. The last time I took a chance was yesterday, decided to try and make a stand for my jointer without plans to go by. I always go by plans or try to stick to them as close as possible. Pieces for a woven end grain board??
Thanks Kevin! That’s awesome you created something of your own. It’s fun to take bits and pieces of what we learn over the years and mix them tighter to suite a specific project. Close on the extra credit! It will be for an end grain.
Love the boards. I took a chance by starting to build things with wood but always get knocked down about what, how, and outcomes of my builds by my family members in the shop. Cutting Board and furniture.
Thanks for the video. I like your style and look forward to more of your content. I'm guessing those strips are for stands to display your boards. They are way too nice to actually use!! My big chance is that I recently committed to retiring. Sounds easy, but it's a huge change. The one thing that I'm sure of is more sawdust in my future...
Congrats, Jeff! I can see how retirement can be a huge change and a challenge. So many things have to be in order, plus you’re walking away from your career and saying goodbye to coworkers. I hope it’s everything you dreamed of man! You’ll have to update me on your projects
I took a chance on taking a preaching class I wasn’t sure I was capable of or would enjoy. It has been very challenging and I’ve enjoyed learning so much. I wonder if you’re using them for a chaos board or some cool coasters.
Great videos, thank you! I've made a pair of cutting boards with your guidance. They look fabulous with the exception of some gaps between the accent strips and the boards. They're maybe 1/32" or smaller, but definitely noticeable. I haven't oiled the wood yet as I want to close those if possible first. I'm wondering if you have advice on how to fill/mask those gaps. I saw it coming during the glue up and tried to force additional glue in. However, during subsequent planing and sanding the gaps are again visible. Any suggestions?
Try mixing a little glue and sawdust that matches one of the woods you’re using at the gap location. You’ll push this into the gap, let it dry for a few hours, and then sand flush. I hope this helps!
Yup, I did it and it came out great. Thanks for this tip and the cutting board videos. They are beautiful! I'll be very proud to give these to close friends as special gifts!
@@johnbarneswood travelling solo being on my own gives me time to reflex on life and the decision I make. I now look at life in a totally different way
Took a chance and started working on/finishing a 10 slab table top.....My thoughts on the cutoffs are it will be chaos cutting board. Nicely done on the boards btw
@@johnbarneswood I did not do the milling on it. One of my buddies bought 2 large white oak slabs off someone and they were just sitting so I decided I would finish the project. Hopefully be done in a couple weeks
They are very pretty but its a lot of work and expensive wood to make a flat grain board that will warp and look pretty bad after 6 months of cutting on it. I would want to add a step of cutting strips to put together at least edge grain boards and then the same process. Assembling entire boards of end grain blocks might be a bit much but it sure would be nice. Whatever the grain of the board that ends up being used this is a great project for CNC
Im sure the give away is over but my life is one chance after another. but at 68 years old my wife and I took ATV's to Glamis sand dunes in California and had a blast.
The last "chance" I took was on a person who was looking for employment. This person had zero work experience, and only spoke a foreign language. These made it very difficult for them to find work. We used a translate app for communication. Proudly, one of my best employees! And I learned a little bit of another language.
Took a chance earlier this year and sold my motorcycle to buy better woodworking tools, including a beautiful new 8" Oliver Jointer. I use the tools 10x more than I ever used the bike! I cant wait to see the Chaos board at the end of the series. ;)

Great job of explaining how introduce the fine line. I took a chance teaching my grandson (13) and his friend (12) how to make a bandsaw box.

What kind of bandsaw and blade.?
Oh and for the strips….for a new board?
Yup! Can you guess what kind of board?
If you'd have cut them on the bandsaw a 3rd time would the weave have been even crazier?
