I'm a new user of SketchUp but have been in graphics for over 30 years. 3D is definitely different than 2D for printing. I thank you for giving us a starting point for this app.
hello Square One, hello Aaron Let me briefly introduce myself. My name is Paul, 66 years old and retired and living in Belgium. My hobby: woodturner. In this wonderful hobby there is little or no professional 3D drawing/plans. All creations are a "one off" (one off a kind). This may be the reason why few people take the time for solid designs on paper. For others and me. I wish to change that and learn the basics of Sketch-up myself. What I am currently unable to do is the drawing of a pipe in a pipe with different diameters inside. With the end-result in Sketch-up I wish to draw “pepper mills” and “vases” and to present the cross-section (half drawing) as a technical auxiliary drawing with clear sizes. You asked for a question, that was my question. I would also like to congratulate you on the beautiful professional videos, clear, understandable, and inspiring. To Aaron: In front of the camera, never look in the top left corner. Psychologists see that as lying. Which of course you don't :-) A Square One Fan Regards Paul.
THANK YOU !!! I've watched other independent SketchUp videos before coming here. Your videos are the best ones from my standpoint. You take small chunks and cover them completely and usually in about 8-15 minutes, perfect for my attention span. Sometimes I'll watch one, other times several, one after the other.
@SketchUp If you click on the surface you want to push / pull, then activate the push / pull function and click the first then the second point on a segment, you push / pull the length between the 2 points
Thanks Aaron, super useful. I have just started using Sketch Up and your videos are really informative and contain great tips. Keep up the good work :)
To do the procedures at 4:30 and after, I need to know how to draw 4 rectangles that are all the same. I'm using SketchUp 2024, and so when I try to double click on another pulled rectangle, the previous rectangle is affected.
Let’s say I have a 2x4 that is 12ish feet and I want to make it exactly 16 feet. How do I push/pull it or (stretch/lengthen) it to that exact 16’ distance without having to know the difference in 16’ and my 12ish foot distance?
just started using sketchup, following with the online version. (maybe it's covered later) if i do a lot of work with round tubes. Like frames, roll cages ETC. How do i line up the round shapes properly? I had tried to put a circle on the side of a tube and it would not let me push pull the new circle.
I love the 'Basics' series - really helpful for an amateur modeller like me! However, you seem to always use the desktop software not the browser version. Perhaps a Basics series for browser users might be a good idea? Keep up the great work!
Where you are showing how you put the hole in the wall for some reason I have no idea how you switch to rotating the view to the back of the wall while the push pull is still active. Could you please explain that. I am using a windows 11 pc. thanks
Eureka! Thank you! So often I'm grabbing the push/pull tool with something already selected, and getting stuck push/pulling that thing. So glad to see that this behavior can be disabled in Preferences. I'll always keep it disabled from now on. Can't imagine why it's useful to use pre-select with push/pull. Is there a reason why this would be handy?
Thanks for this video. I've a question about push pool tool behaviour . I take 2 examples . First I draw a rectangle and push pull it . I get a box with 6 white faces from the outside point of view, everything fine up to now. Second I draw a rectangle and split it into 2 rectangles using the line tool. Then I push pull one of the rectangles and surprise (at least for me) I don't get a full box but one with the basis face missing , additionally the faces are grey from the outside point of view. I don't understand why this difference in the behaviour of push pull in these 2 examples. I noticed that If I want to get a full box in the 2nd example then I've to use the CTRL key to add the basis face. Can you shed some light on this ? TIA
IF you push/pull a face that is connected to other geometry, the assumption is that you are adding geometry to an existing shape, so it moves the existing shape... If you pul a face that is all by itself, the assumption is that you are creating something new, so it essentially "copies" the initial face to create a new solid shape.
@@SketchUp Thanks for taking time to read and reply . I take now this assumption as given. But I've a second example where I can't figure out the push pull mechanism and the assumption you described. I draw a rectangle and inside it a smaller one . I push pull the inner rectangle and get a box with the missing basis face, this is correct based on the assumption you described. Now I roll back the push pull of the inner rectangle and push pull the outer rectangle and surprise for me the new volume has a basis face here, I was not expecting this due to your assumption.
I've taken a building I designed in AutoCAD to make a Sketchup model for presentation. And trying to learn Sketchup along the way. Your videos, Aaron, are really helpful. Thank you! But I seen to have hit a snag. When I use Push/Pull to create window openings, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. After using Push/Pull to make a wall, I then draw lines on the face to create the window or door opening. This has been successful about half the time. The rest of the time what I'm left with is a blue wall the thickness of a line on one face. If I delete it, parts of the wall disappear with it. What's left is what looks like a hollow space between the faces. Any help? Thanks.
Pulling profiles on an angle, example.... stair hand rails following a set of stairs. I do it all the time but with the follow me tool, Can it be done with the push pull tool? perhaps you have a better way to do it than I. I draw a line from the vertex of tread and riser at top to same at bottom vertex of tread and riser of the stair run. Raise that line 34-36” . Then take my railing prophile rotate it perp to that line , then use the follow me tool. Can it be done using push pull if I were to rotate the UCS ?
@@tcfonts Yes it is an AutoCad thing, been using AC since it's inception. Why I use, when in SketchUp the Follow Me Tool to do as I mentioned. I was asking Aron if it can be done in SU with the Push Pull tool via a method I'm not aware of. Thanks though for the reply.
@@tcfonts BTW, there is no per say roration but you can align the UCS with an entity. Once axis is aligned, you would think you could push pull along any of the axi. Unless I’m missing something after a decade of using SU.
Another thing, referring to my example. The railing all be it at an angle to the ground. The profile (face/shape) I’m wanting to follow that reference line/angle is in fact perpendicular to the angle and the axis is aligned with that angle. By what your saying, it should work with the push pull tool. I’m only debating and trying to learn not arguing. Thanks for listening.
I don't think you mentioned but if you select multiple objects then go to the P/P tool are they all manipulated or moved the same distance even though they might not start out in the same plane. I tried to do this but couldn't get it to work so I'm assuming it's not possible or more likely I just don't understand how to do it.
Hi. Beginner here. If you group the wall is there a way to push/pull a window opening through it? Also is there a way to push through two adjacent grouped items. I am trying to add holes to bolt a joist and a post.
hi! this double click is cool! and it would be way cooler for me if I understood this: when does a double click make the object bigger, when smaller? Or, when does the surface move in my direction/away from me? or towards/away from the origin... it seems random to me so far.
Thanks! Love these Square One lessons. Somewhere I heard that Push Pull can be used to "cut" a path through another opening. I'm a woodworker and it would be similar to routing a dado across the surface of a square piece of board from one side to the other. Then rotating the board 90° and routing another dado across the board. The two dados will intersect in the center. How does this work? When I try it the second dado stops when it reaches the edge of the first dado.
What you are talking about would be better performed with Solid Tools. With Solid Tools you can model a dado as a solid and trim them from the piece of wood. Push pull would allow you to draw the profile of the dado on the face of the wood, then push the surface into the wood.
The angled surface on the object on the left cannot be push/pulled unless the right side of the object is pulled first. Then the angled surface can be pulled until it tries to go beyond the main object.
my push and pull is not working double click nothing happen, put a dimension then enter nothing happen. the push and pull icon turn into white box with red arrow instead of gray box with red arrow.
You are most likely attempting to push/pull a surface that is unavailable (in a container or multiple faces). Post your model on our forum (forums.sketchup.com) for more assistance (TH-cam comments is a hard place to try to troubleshoot)

In the window sample, is it possible to pull push the wall through the window from top bottom or left to right or vice versa?

Can sketchup give volume of shapes for calcuulating concrete requirted?
Yes, the Entity Info panel displays the volume of a solid object.
very new beginner here - how are you orbiting (panning, and zooming) while you have Push Pull selected (or other tools)
Use mouse wheel to zoom. Click and hold mouse wheel to orbit. Hold Shift while clicking and holding mouse wheel to pan.
Thank you - I’ll have to check on how to translate this for a MacBook Trackpad
Your life will dramatically improve with a mouse 😊
How does "reverse face" affect push/pull ?
Awesome
Anyone who can answer. Are you able to add a push/pull object (square or cylinder) onto an existing stl file project?
audio is low. im full up on player volume n system as well. but still so low

WHY IS WHEN I PUSH/PULL IT IS ALWAYS LIMITED 00 CM
That is usually caused by intersecting geometry. Try tapping the modifier key to create new surface.

Push/pull + CTRL - pull to base, and now you have a 2D drawing instead of the drawing being deleted.

If the components are copies of the same component, that is possible. Otherwise, Push/Pull works on a single face at a time.
to push pull several surfaces at the same time, there is the extension of Fredo 6. There are several modes available
