  • The first wave of bands have been announced for 2025, and it's a tsunami worth diving into.
    Karnivool, Melvins, Rolo Tomassi, Kylesa, Between the Buried and Me playing Colors, The Fall of Troy playing Doppelgänger and not just one, but two We Lost The Sea sets, including "the greatest post rock album ever"... Departure Songs.
    Plenty to get swept away by but first, what's the issue with international bank transfers, music award bashes and agents selling you a dummy!
    Curly fucking Wurly, indeed.

    Lost it at "I threw a scotch egg at Daphne and Celeste", what an image. Always appreciate the outside the box bookings at ATG, Tokky Horror/Blood Command were up there in my favourite bands of this year.

    Came for the music content, got a banger story from Gavin about his journalism days. Am now reading old Paisley Daily Express articles. Fantastic stuff!

    We lost the sea playing departure songs in full at damnation a couple of years back is possibly the best thing I've ever experienced live, hyped for it at ATG

    Brian Johnson pick makes sense. The success and longevity of his career with AC/DC speak volumes about how perfect a replacement he was following the untimely demise of Bon Scott (who I overall prefer).
    In terms of other possibilities my initial thoughts were:
    Bruce Dickinson with Iron Maiden (not actually mentioned in this context by James) - as much as i like Di'Anno's albums, Maiden would have never had the universal success and longevity without Dickinson.
    Floor Janssen with Nightwish - their popularity was waning prior to her recruitment but they are now more successful than even the Tarja era with some highly acclaimed albums.
    Ronnie James Dio with Black Sabbath - a short but successful stint that had Dio's influence stamped all over it.
    Digging a little deeper there are some biggies i hadn't initally thought of:
    Mike Patton with Faith No More
    Ian Gillan with Deep Purple
    James LaBrie with Dream Theater
    Greg Puciato with Dillinger Escape Plan
    Phil Anselmo with Pantera
    Henry Rollins with Black Flag
    Barney Greenway with Napalm Death

    Sounds like you need a band (or two) to play a short set to solve the problem of full album sets going 65 minutes.
    I'd like to propose one solution: Book both Coilguns and Birds in Row to play separately, and then have them play the You and I in the Gap-EP as the most epic 16 minutes and 25 seconds of filler you'll ever hear 🙂

    Saw Kylesa in 2014 at the Exchange. Great gig but, ye, not a big venue. Especially given their reputation at the time. Saw Kadavar there a few months prior but they were up and coming at the time.

    Johnson over Scott as the BEST replacement of all time is absolute outrage. James.. this random internet person is outraged by that statement. I was having a pleasant Thurs listen and that's ruined the entire day, maybe even the weekend.

      I'm confused, is your absolute random internet person outrage directed at the fact James chose this as the BEST or to the (unconfirmed) suggestion that James prefers Johnson over Scott?

    • @jpud0602
      @jpud0602 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Objectively: if "best" = album sales, Johnson/Scott is logically correct.
      FACTS DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS!!!
      ...unless you're using a different metric. If so, please share your workings.

    • @Rumpo74
      @Rumpo74 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@jpud0602 you asked for metrics, you're getting metrics sir!
      Commercial success
      Critical acclaim
      Legacy & influence
      Sprinkling of personal taste
      The 4 key metrics to any nerd based music discussion! In this topic though there is a critical additional question: was the replacement member responsible for the results? With Johnson Vs Scott I'd argue ACDCs success was as much the groundwork laid by the band over the years of graft and success, than the sudden manifestation of a new vocalist who (let's be honest) wasn't doing much different from the previous. Sure he helped compose some bangers, but they were writing bangers before.
      Surely a better example of a front man would be something like Phil Anselmo (for better or worse) who helped turn pantera from laughable glam metal unknowns into global metal superstars. When you talk about Dickinson and (definitely) Johnson you're talking about front man coming into already successful bands.
      Fin.
