Both look very well constructed and if asked currently I would go with the Demko due to the amount of actual testing. Down the road if the Atlas lock proves itself then it would be a viable choice over the Demko especially where price and availability are concerned. I like the look of both knives and they are both designed for hard heavy work. Love the look inside of both knives side by side as you can see how well designed both knives are. Looking forward to seeing lots of testing vids on the Atlas lock. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
If I had to pick one for looks it would be the AD20 but if I was going bush for sometime Id pick the Cold steel every day of the week.
Definitely I am not a fan of bearings on folding knives.

The knife would probbly open faster. But the down side to that is it would also probbly be harder to shut

Since the AD20 is nowhere in sight anymore & $600+, I went with the engage. Looks great & way more realistically priced. When the smaller versions drop at $80, Demko will have his work cut out for him. The AD20.5 is 2x the price. With these it’s 3x if you ever find one for retail

Have had several AD20's..Sold them all. Got this Atlas lock engage the other day. Very impressed with it. Considering the price point , I won't be afraid to carry it and use it. The Demko's were to pricey for me to want to seriously use them. The engage is a close copy of the Shark lock obviously...But that doesn't bother me. Good job Cold Steel. I cant wait for the Mayem with the Atlas lock to arrive later this year.

Sneckx's superlock was developed first, he posted the designs on Instagram but refused to patent to encourage innovation.
Demko took the core ideas of both of Sneckx's locks which he evolved in both the Shark and Scorpion locks, the former of which he changed in terms of the way the slider connects with the blade tang
Cold Steel then further strengthened the Atlas lock using double pins and a beefier slider

Have you done a review on a Buck? I have the Buck 110 and so far it’s an amazing knife and it has the best lockout sound of any knife I’ve ever seen
I have since purchased both the Engage and the Demko 20.5. From my experience, the Engage is both easier and more pleasant in it’s operation. Regrettably, the Demko lock release switch is painfully sharp. None of it’s aggressive surfaces have been contoured whatsoever.. I expected much much more for my $375+… Note: The Engage cost less than half the cost of the Demko ($165) and while it’s not perfect, it’s much more useable than the Demko….. I guess that I’ll have to contour the Demko’s lock switch myself… Bummer!
Another thought review, and I'm thankful to you about it! If I have to choose, I'd probably go for the Cold Steel and that's just because CS has two full metal liners that matters to me. Oh, let's not for get the price.

To me, the very short, curved metal piece resting on the tang in the Cold Steel, looks like it might easily slip under the wrong circumstances. The shark lock inspires more confidence with the amount of contact between the lock bar and the tang. Plus, the soft detent on the cold steel makes me worried for my fingers. I’ve seen images of people who grabbed a partially opened knife in their pocket… Not a good sight…
I agree, and these are things I will attempt to test in real life so we shall see, I do think it's a very strong lock but I'm skeptical of how it will hold up through actual real life use and not just brute force
@@NeevesKnives sort of feels like Cold Steel rushed out a competitor for the shark lock to grab a piece of the fidget market. I doubt Lynn would have been this fast, he tended to carry his own stuff through entire three month safaris before giving the green light. But then, he would have still been working with Demko, so there probably would be actual shark locks in Cold Steels.

No. Jimislash already beat the living shit out of an atlas lock with non stop spine whacks to test impact slippage, did not budge one bit. No slip, no play. Do you really think the designers wouldn't test that? If they didn't they're risking the entire brand of the company. One lock failure on a cold steel and the internet would explode.
Technical Question: Why is the base of the Sharksfoot blade stick out more than on the Drop Point? When open, it partially fills the choil. Does the shape of that blade make that protrusion required. I’m assuming it is needed to protect from blade strike, but an uncertain why on one and not the other. The width at the base of both blades seem the same to me. Any thoughts?

The ramp on the AD20 looks a bit safer though, where you need to pull a little bit outward before you can disengage the blade.
In a scenario where McGuyver need to use a piece of gum, spring from your knife to disarm a bomb, yet still need to chop through some wood to get out. The atlas lock would slide off easily, whilst the shark lock have the ramp.
Plus you can still use your thumb to force the lock locked. Something you can't on atlas since the switch is so far down

Sometimes when tolerance is really tight they aren't as good. Normally tight tolerances is a good thing but if it becomes too tight it won't function.
The Demko clearly has better design and tolerances. Look at how the bar and blade engage. For reasons unknown the Cold Steel bar and blade seem to have different shapes so that they don't have full contact. Also note that the Demko bar overlap is larger meaning that an accidental disengagement would almost be impossible. I know cost comes into it and for many that will be the deal breaker but for me it's the Demko. Another great bid.

That looks like the AD-20 doesn't have much of a sharpening life, does it?
Because you can't go further than the little sharpening choil as that's where the stop pin goes in the closed position.

The closing stop pin on that Engage is stupidly placed IMO. As soon as somebody goes to deepen the sharpening choil either for their own aesthetic choice, or because they have sharpened it a lot, or Bubba sharpened it before returning it that blade will start moving in more and more which will eventually cause the blade to strike inside the scales. It needs to be moved to a part of the knife that will never see a sharpening stone. Combine that with the new horror stories seen about GSM denying Cold Steels lifetime warranty I would say that knife should be avoided for the time being.

I don't like the placement of it either, but I'm not going to assume it's the end of the world.
I think the lock bar will also prevent it from going further and the little pin is like an extra safety that also serves a another purpose as it is a bottom guide for the lock bar. If you do sharpen the blade so much that the little pin does nothing to hold it back, then in theory the edge has also "shrunk" and probably won't be an issue.
Why that stop pin is set to engage the choil and not the tang, I will never understand. That is indeed a stupid decision.
And yeah, let’s say someone buys this knife but doesn’t see this video and doesn’t develop the understanding that increasing the choil depth will ruin the knife, he might indeed to that and ruin the knife. Bad design.
Give me a nice cheap frame lock every time. Some guy was testing the old Cold Steel Tri-ad and the Atlas and the Atlas loosened up considerably more after some rough use. But in many years of using knives I have never had a lock fail were i got a finger cut, so fancy locks are BS.

Is the ATLAS lock wider than the shark lock? The shark lock felt pretty pointy when I used it.

That's not quite how it works. You're basically describing a perpetual motion machine if it could do that.
Energy applied to the back of the blade just goes from "Bar to Pin" and the blade is being pushed away from the pin so "technically" those components do not connect when significant pressure is applied to the back of the blade. Really the Atlas Lock is just a Tri-Ad lock with the locking nub in a different orientation, and the second pin is almost completely unnecessary, though I love seeing ridiculously overbuilt knives so I am glad they have double lock pins.
I think AD 20 for edc and CS Engage for combat because of the way how we will disengage the lock. Under stress, you can accidentally disengage the lock of AD 20 with your thumb by pulling back the lock. But for CS Engage, locking mechanism is in your palm in normal situation. So we can’t disengage it easily when your palm is covering the locking mechanism. Can CS Engage accidentally open in the pocket? That is my biggest concern with CS Engage.
Hey Jared! Question about Nitro V and 14c28n please mate. I can't seem to get 14c28n as bitey as Nitro V, using the same stones, is this also your experience? D2, bitier than 14c28n, but not as easy as the Nitro V to get it there. I just got my first cruwear and holy crap, it's bitey... I can't wait to try other affordable, partly stainless tool steels.
Tools steels are great and the more your experience grows the more you grow to lovem, 14c28n usually takes a lot of bite, its a steel that does great at lower angles you might need to drop the angle, d2 does great at low to medium grits while 14c28n does great at medium to fine grit, but I think you just need to lower the angle on your 14c28n

I don't like how strong the detent or "suck in" is on the AD20.5 I have. It has cut me many times because it sucks the blade back in too fast with too much force, and the knife is insanely thin. Thinner than the Bugout. So if your thumb opening fails to fully deploy for any reason, it's damn near guaranteed to cut you. I wish it had a super light detent like the Cold Steel so that didn't happen. The AD knife has cut me more than any other knife I own. Kind of ridiculous and definitely a safety issue.

Edit: Oops. Demko uses ball bearings on the pivot. I’m not crazy about those. Do any of their knives use washers? I prefer washers. Easy to maintain, easy to replace, less finicky or prone to contamination than bearings. What if your knife has bearings and it gets soaking wet?
None of the AD 20 lines do however almost every other demko uses washers

You should of tried the demko spring in the engage. Its longer and in the same amount of space giving it a better detent.
I have other springs that will work as well that will increase the detent strength, after the video I was upset that I didn't show that or say it

Hey Jerad Thanks for the comparison, I think most people will just pick the cold steel , unless there extremely lucky getting there hands on an AD20 , That knife is non existent especially in a nice Ti handle with a high end steel , He gets bashed on his IG all the time for teasing people 😂, If he would make them were people can buy them he would sell a million of them 🤷🏻♂️
Now that cold steel isn't what they used to be anymore I'd prefer any of the demko knives.

I just got the engage today in the mail and its an awsome knife.I thinkl it makes the AD20.5 feel like a toy..It opens and closes as good or better than the Demko and isnt even on bearings.
Yeah the 20.5 feels far better if you get new scales like original goat linked in my description, but the ad20 is a beast compared

What is the handle material of the Engage 3.5" cold steels website contradicts, in the description it says GFN, but I the are where it says blue prints it says G10. Pictures look like it could be G10. I emailed GSM/COLD STEEL and they replied G10.
But since you have one in hand I thought I'd ask.
It's g10, I hate when those things are confusing, I deal with that a lot on grinds between flat and hollow, but it's for sure g10

I have an engage on order and can't wait to get my hands on it. Tho I have to say the Atlas lock sure does resemble the shark lock. I do think I like the placement of the release area on the atlas better, as in some grips I tend to start to disengage the shark lock. I don't see that happening with the atlas, but time will tell.

Given that CS makes knives with Demko's other lock designs (Triad, Scorpion) but not the Shark lock, one must assume that he never gave them permission to do so. Now they have the Atlas lock, which to me just looks like a modification (and perhaps an improvement) on the Shark lock. But does Demko have a patent on the Shark lock? If he does, this looks like an infringement to me. And if not, well too bad for him. Regardless, I can neither afford nor even find an AD20, so I am glad CS has come out with this design. It will be my new EDC. Now if they would only start delivering them to the little people. I ordered one well over a month ago. No sign of shipping any time soon, and no responses to my queries on the matter.
Demko does have the patent to the Shark Lock (or it's at least pending). However, the way patents work is that if it's changed "enough" then it is not infringement. In my opinion the Atlas is changed enough and in some ways improved with the double stop pin and the "compression" of of the lock bar+blade+first stop pin.

The positioning of the shark lock makes it much easier to close without changing hand position. Plus the atlas is just cold steel copying demko.

The Atlas disengages with a butt strike while the shark does not. Still, having owned and sold two AD20 and an Engage on the way, my take is one is a very expensive simple knife of G10 and 20CV that is almost impossible to find for retail and the other will be on sale at Midway and Amazon for $100 in six months and can be treated as a fun thing to beat on with nearly as good steel and G10. Hate to say it as I'm a huge Demko fan, but the Cold Steel is the better knife here just on price. I also like the blade grind better. The AD20 is a wedge. Thats why I sold mine, they don't cut well. With the CS used T8 hardware. T6 sucks, especially on something like this or a 4Max.

Shark, Atlas, Scorpion, Triad… not sure which one is stronger or better, but it sure seems like “strongest” is certainly the goal they’re all chasing. 👍🏻
And while especially CS's marketing is heavily focused on strength they also don't give you liners in most of their folders.
Nothing wrong with that per se but if you go for strength than go for it and don't cut corners.
Man, have you ever held in your hands recon1 and similar g10 no liners knife? What would you need liners here for?? I understand what you say if for glass filled nylon tho, this material is much less stable.
Well, it was pretty much Demko that started it all if you think about it. He helped to instill that culture in Cold Steel when he still worked for them and now Demko and CS still continue that as separate entities.
They made it only different enough to avoid lawsuits.
Gotta give it to the AD20.5 and honestly I think the Atlas lock is going to be a fail for Cold Steel give the placement on the handle.
Yeah we will see I think it will be a hit overall, especially since they will sell budget versions for 50$ and it's alot easier to manipulate than the tri ad

What do you mean? My ad20? It was a 450$ knife its now a 600$ because I put full ti scales on it, but the tolerances are very tight so tight that I can't flex a dime of movement in any direction, no pivot lash, it's really good
@@NeevesKnives and if you don't get in before they sell out for $450 they're immediately on the resale block for $600. I'd expect that knife to have tighter tolerances than a $150 retail mass produced knife. Kind of goes without saying or the amount of praise you had for something 3-4x the price.

So Demko basically re-invented his own invention, the Ram-Lock Cold Steel use in their Pocket Bushman.
To me, the Atlas looks quite a bit weaker then the Shark. The engagement surfaces are far smaller which in return means that only a slight bit of movement on the release bar is enough to unlock it. Maybe even some good old spine whacks. Couple that with the weaker spring and the (imho) not optimal position for the release and this is a Cold Steel i pass on.
Their testing showed that the atlas held 700 lbs
@@NeevesKnives I doubt the security of the lock in the dynamic environment that real life is, not it's strength under optimal conditions in a lab.
Also whenever a manufacturer test their own product I'd take the results with a large grain of salt.

Demko needs to wake up and significantly reduce the price. $280 bucks for a plastic handle with BUDGET steel isn't fair. You can buy civivi knives for $60 bucks with D2 and G10 (Much better than dollar store plastic)
