Each has strengths and weaknesses ...... but man this was fun to shoot!!! An absolute joy and I am so glad I rented it. Those are not macro shots - just cropped in - it is that sharp. Truth is, all the big camera manufacturers make great cameras and lenses. I understand what you said about being very invested in Canon gear. I'm pretty heavily invested in Sony glass so, I'm sure I'll be getting the a6700. It'll become my primary camera and my a6600 will become my back up camera. My younger brother was only moderately invested in Canon and he sold his Canon gear and bought a full frame Sony. I rented an a7RIII an used it for a week. Great camera but, I'm not personally sold on going full frame. Anyway, good video and nice hummingbird images. Thanks for sharing.

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you 100% - all the newer tech is impressive and so much fun to shoot. For wildlife, I do prefer a crop body for the added reach. I use my full frame R5 as well as it has a different look. And when I shot Nikon DSLRs, I like the older crop bodies (D5500 D3200), but HATED the D500 that everyone raved about. I loved and still love my D800. I sold almost all of my Nikon stuff when I switched to Canon. I was also shooting Sony back then but I was not a big fan of the color science in the raw files - to my eyes it was flat. When i rented the A6700 I knew the focus would be amazing, and that it would have rolling shutter like Canon so I worked around that by setting my shutter to the lowest mechanical and it works. I just wanted to play with the autofocus and was expecting not much past that. I was blown away by all of it. It still has some limitation compared to the R7, but in other ways it makes up for it. I really, really WANT the A6700, the 200-600, and the 90mm macro lens set up I rented. For wedding or events though, I will and do use a full frame. But oh yeah - this is a super impressive set up and I would take it all day long over anything Nikon - it surpasses the Z9 for what I want it to do!! 🙏💖🤗

      I had a LOT of fun shooting that set up. I had rented it again last week and unfortunately, the 200-600 has some issues and I got nothing I can use. I did also rent an EF to E adpater and used my 70-200 on the A6700. It worked really well, or as you would expect an adapted lens to work. The shots with my Canon 70-200 are beautiful and tack sharp - the issues I had with the Sony lens.... devastating. Ah well. Over all though, I get better results with the Canon R7. 🙏💖🤗

    Great video!
    I like the was you use different gear for photos and videos. So you are the right person to judge them.
    I use Fuji X T4 and I feel like changing so many times.
    Sony for the Autofocus 6700 or wait for something like the A75 or A7s4: I'll get full frame
    Canon R5 because of the video in 120 fps, focus and color, and full frame (or the R5 ii)
    And now Nikon z8...
    But I'll still be sticking with what I have for now... Still confused...
    Not sure whether Full frame actually matters
    But 4k 120fps would be good. I know it's not about the gear. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for sharing your video, I was curious about the new A6700 + birding with a 200-600. I own the lens, and an Older A7R II thinking of adding a camera for birding/wildlife more. Your photos look fantastic, and it really shows off the quality of the camera + lens combo as well.
    Also, what is the setup and strap brands + configuration you're using to carry the camera. I always end up packing it away then unpacking it since I don't have a good way to carry it without knocking into things. You'r setup at time "6:44" for example keeps it in front of you. "This is a cheap "waka Rapid Camera Neck Strap with Quick Release and Safety Tether" that I got on Amazon. I keep it attached at two points at all times - dropping a camera is a hear wrenching feeling. If it is a short lens, I keep two on the camera. If I have a long lens, one one the lens and one on the camera. I have been really happy with this. I got it when my expensive name brank one broke!!! 🙏💖🤗

      I have had about 5 Sony cameras over the years and this is the first one I have really been in love with. I never really cared for the color depth in the raw files, and I forget what full frame Sony i also did not care for this lens. I really like as much reach for wildlife as I can get but like a larger sensor. The 20 megapixel sensor of the old D500 just did not do it for me but when the R7 came out, I jumped on it. I was already shooting the Canon 90D. When this A6700 came available at the rental company I use, I jumped on it with the 200-600 so I could shoot birds, a video lens and a macro lens....... WOW. I was blown away.. I had a few issues like exposure inconsistency with birds in flight but I really think that is my lack of understanding and time with the Sony menu. It too me about a month to get the R7 dialed in, about a week to get the R5 dialed in and only about 5 minutes with a DSLR. There is so much in the menu that I was happy I got it set up enough to get some shots I was happy with. For wildlife, it is an AMAZING set up - and macro too - and video!!! . 🙏💖🤗

      @@JonnyPink65 Thanks for the reply! Also the link again. I also was (still own) Nikon shooter. I have the D7500 not as nimble as the D500 but was a lot cheaper at the time. As well as several Nikon Lenses. The DSLRs were so much easier to use to me. I have never tried Canon, but I got a such a great deal on a Sony camera that I bought a few Lenses, now years later I feel it's too hard to switch to another brand due to costs. Sony setup at least in the camera I had was very hard to use compared to my nikon D7500. Sounds like you are invested in Canon now. I considered getting the R5, because I found the 5.2L VR lens super unique, but I think it would just be novel for me as I'm not a professional. I should rent one for fun, a lot cheaper to try. Hard to justify the spending to "keep". Look forward to seeing more videos. Thanks again Jonny!

      @@normh151 I agree 100% - it is cheaper to stay with the system you have switched too... mostly LOL. I look at cameras like cars - they are tools. My favorite all time car is the 69-70 Corvette stingray. Fun to drive but not practicable by todays standards. Even the tires on those car - like our lenses, are better today. It still drives and performs handles OK, is super fun to drive, looks amazing and fits like an old pair of jeans.... but the latest standard cars off the lot perform and handle better, and have so many more features that work better for todays modern tech world. I traded most of my old gear taking the loss as it was just sitting in bags doing me no good - will be getting rid of more shortly to get this Sony set up. I have rented many times over the last two years instead of just buying and realized, I can write it all off so that is a win. Even the gear I rented for an upcoming wedding I am doing as a favor will be a write off. All my old stuff I used to use is gone (it was old anyway) and I will be using all new stuff for this one - all rented so I can return it when done, and I am actually kind of excited. Might have to get back into it depending on how much of a pain it ends up being LOL. Enjoy what you have, go out and just have fun. That is the most important thing - have fun and enjoy each time you are out!!! 💖🤗

      I should get more motivated and sell my gear at a loss like you and upgrade to more modern equipment. Unlike cars, unless it's film camera I don't think digital keeps its value so well so it does seems smart to sell. Although some lenses like a nikon 200 F2 are exotics will maintain their value. I don't own one but I'd love to! The Stingray is nice, I know that one! A sxy car that turns heads! Good luck on your wedding shoot! I don't own a business no write off here, but might not be a bad way

    It looks like a very good camera and lens. I agree, I am too invested in Canon to think about changing, and I love my Canon gear. With the way camera manufacturers tend to leapfrog each other a person could go broke chasing the new better system.

      First, thank you. It is fun to rent the new gear when possible. I LOVE my Canon stuff and I am looking forward to the advances. The mirrorless advantages are light years what the DSLRs could do and the older film cameras. That is where we learned though. It is a great inexpensive camera but it does have some drawbacks as well. The biggest thing I noticed was the inconsistency in exposer with birds or dragonflies in flight. That could have been me and my settings - lack of experience with Sony settings, but I did experience that. I will have it in an upcoming video...... with dragonflies in flight!! 🙏💖🤗

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First, let me say thank you!!! I have owned a couple of Sony and even owned this lens in the past - I was not a fan for many reasons. I kept shooting my old Nikon DSLRs... until the R5 came out and I jumped in with both feet. I was really excited about the A6700 because of the new AI chip and tracking even though Sony has always had amazing tracking - to my, the raw files just lacked color depth. I had low expectations but thought it would be fun to shoot for a couple of days and I was blown away. The color in the raw files is deep and rich, the clarity is amazing and the focus is sharp. It is not a prefect camera but there is not a perfect camera out there any way. I did my best to set it up as I do with my Canons. I use back button focus and have the shutter button set to meter and actuate the shutter - not focus - that is what the back button focus is for. I fumbled with the menus to set it up so one button is single point (my favorite) focus with average metering I think it was, and assigned another to eye tracking - I go between two all the time on my Canons. The menus are all foreign to me so I did what I could. To be honest with you, I was just happy I was able to get some photos I was happy with. When I do own one, and I will, I will be able to really dig into the menus to see what they do and then I will be able to give a better answer. But all my cameras - even my old DSLRs are all back button focus. The new ones just allow us to use the amazing eye tracking as well!!! Oh, white balance I keep on everything at 5500 K - it works for me, auto ISO, the aperture as low as the lens will go, and shutter speed as high as I can without pushing the ISO past about 6000...10000 ish. The main things I want - clarity, color depth and super sharp photos. I hope this helps a little. 🙏💖🤗

      Thank you!! I rented it and since I only had the set up for a couple of days, I really cant tell you how I set it up other than I use back button focus on all my cameras. I tried to set it up like I have my Canons with one button for spot focus and another for tracking. Past that, I was just happy I was able to get out and take photos that I was happy with. In fact, everything about this camera blew me away. As far as getting used to the EVF, that happens really quick and you dont have to look at your back screen for much. It is when you go back to the DSLR that you miss the information and function right at your eye that you feel lost. finding a subject in the viewfinder of a DSLR is easier but you get used to that too LOL. I still love shooting a DSLR but it does feel very yesterday as far as tech goes. The tracking of the new bodies is AWESOME!!! 🙏🤗💖

    Great video as always, thanks so much for doing this test. I am looking forward to your comments on how it compares with the R7. Awesome - I did not know that. I was under the impression that it did not. The R7, at the same price point, does and I really like that. If I buy one (OK who am I kidding - when I buy one), I will have more time to really dig in and refine settings that work for me. I did a quick set up and was happy I got the shots I did. • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not have it long enough to shoot in electronic - I kept it in mechanical the entire time. I shoot all my cameras in mechanical of first curtain, and on the slowest shutter for a couple of reasons. Canon rolling shutter at high frame rate is terrible and Sony is not much better. To minimize that, I shoot mechanical and slow..... and I like the sound as well LOL The other advantage is that I don't have to dump a couple thousand of the same shot, only a couple. Everyone has a system that works for their preferred style and this works for me. I wish I had a better answer for you!!! Without a stacked sensor and only SD storage, I would guess that in electronic, the rolling shutter would be noticeable. The readout and slower SD storage would just not be fast enough to not be there. 🙏💖🤗

I know in a couple fo the videos I did with this camera that I was lost with the Sony menu. I did my best to set it up like I have my Canons set up. with the back button focus. I had set my Z9 up the same way - less to think about. I was just happy I got it set up enough to take photos and track LOL. I expected nothing when I rented it - I am not a fan of older Sony washed out raw color files - even in their video cameras. I expected the tracking to be spot on - it is and I say that Nikon still has a LOT of catching up to do. It has its flaws - every camera does including my R7 and R5 and this lens and that lens..... but...... I was blown away to the point where I really want this set up for both wildlife and macro. Video, I will still shoot Canon. The biggest thing I noticed was an exposure inconsistency when tracking a subject in flight making creating a sequence a little tougher. I knew I would have rolling shutter so I I shot in mechanical and at the lowest shutter speed setting - like my Canons. This set up is less expensive than the Canon with the 100-500 by about $1000 - that is a win. I get a lot of questions about price and weight and what works well so I try to think of of gear from that perspective and present it as such. If you have me a choice between this and a Z9 (I owned one for about 6 months), I would take this and produce results that would put the Z9 to shame. But yeah, overall I really enjoyed shooting this and I do want one - I just to finish paying off my 600 F4! I expected nothing and was blown away! 🙏🤗💖

      @@JonnyPink65 I should have been a little less sarcastic in my reply. Sorry. I guess I was just expecting a different kind of video. What you provided did showcase the capabilities of the camera and lens quite well.

      @@indyvin No worries at all. I think all cameras are fun to shoot, and each offers something different. None is perfect, just more expensive. I do love my Canons for sure but this A6700 impressed me and I am still thinking about it LOL. The next one I really want to try is the Panasonic G9 II when it hits the market. And I thank you!! 🤗💖

    What strap setup is that? Looks cool!

      This is a cheap "waka Rapid Camera Neck Strap with Quick Release and Safety Tether" that I got on Amazon. I keep it attached at two points at all times - dropping a camera is a hear wrenching feeling. If it is a short lens, I keep two on the camera. If I have a long lens, one one the lens and one on the camera. I have been really happy with this. I got it when my expensive name brank one broke!!! 🙏💖🤗

      I thank you - I do take pride in my editing. I use Adobe Lightroom Classic. Prior to the noise reduction button, I used masks a LOT!!! 🙏💖🤗

    Pity that Sony didn’t put enough enthusiasm to make this ASP-C camera a bit more high end. If they had come up with a mini A1 …

      I think overall, it is a great little camera body for wildlife that will allow folks to get into photography at not too high a price. There is no camera or lens combo that is perfect and I think we are all always wanting more LOL - i do anyway. It is a awesome little camera body!! 🙏💖🤗

    where can i find that sling harness ?

      It is actually a cheap strap I bought on Amazon - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CLXDF9J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 - when my last expensive one broke. It looks like that because i have two points of contact with my set up at all times for safety. Nothing is as heart wrenching as having your lens hit the ground..... from experience. So far, this inexpensive one has lasted longer than any other I have had with my 500F4 and now the 600 F4. 🙏💖🤗
