I don't understand why you would teach a dog to track a person that is already beside them during the track holding the leash... There are a lot of things missing with your method.

Damn, you guys is so wrong. The dog cant understand that they are tracking the person who is holding the leash, the dog is tracking the scent of a human. In the beginning you are always using food to get them started. btw, iam working as a doghandler so iam not talking trash :)
This is actually the way to start them off. The dog has no idea what you want from him, therefore you need to teach him by giving out treats that are in the actual track (as we've seen him putting treats in his own footprints) this is so the dog can match the scent with something positive and by time learns that it's the scent that he needs to track. regards, another dog handler :)
