Holy Cow. LOVED Tom Rose's "Coda". I AM SO EXCITED to start this TOMORROW with my GSD. I KNOW 100% he will LOVE this!!! Last night, he went NUTS trying to track a fox in our neighborhood--I didn't know THAT was what he was doing, I only knew he immediately went into crazy high drive when we walked out the door, but his nose wouldn't leave the ground (even though overall obedience is great). On our way home, a beautiful fox ran in front of us--that was clearly what he'd been sniffing the entire excited walk. SO GLAD YOU'RE DOING A SERIES, my German Shepherd 💖 Dog thanks you in advance!!!!!

Tracking Box, is it always placed in the same spot until your dog pulls you towards that area every session or do you set it up in a different location every training session & have your dog pull you towards any area they see marked w/ flags? Thanks so much.

Yes, this is for sport. Search and rescue training is usually taught differently. However, many believe that this training will help a dog learn search and rescue training faster than dogs without this training. I plan on doing a search and rescue series in the near future. Cheers!

I just found you a few day ago and I'm very impressed by your work! It helps me very much and even as a non-native speaker I can understand you very clear, keep up the great work! I'd be very happy if you could make a video about a "try again" marker in the future. For example I say "sit" my dog lays down and instead of correcting my dog I say "wrong" or whatever and they know this was not the behavior I asked for, so they try something else. I really like this concept because I don't like correcting my dogs when they messed up a command because this can take out fun and excitement out of our training sessions and I want a dog who isn't afraid to fail and who is eager to try again and again. I saw a lot of trainers use a "try again" marker but I haven't really gotten behind on how to condition them, would appreciate a video on this topic :)

Hi Nate, great video as always, I do have a quick question though. Would this method work to teach a dog real world tracking? for example search and rescue work?
I love your videos, Nate! I was wondering if there is an effective way to train tracking without leaving food on the ground as I would like to train my dog to only take food from my hand or out of his bowl and not think he can just eat whatever he finds laying on the ground. Thanks!
My dog is not food motivated at all. What can I do for her to get her tracking on a line. Should I skip the tracking box and lay a short line with one article and her toy under it. That way, I can mark the behavior when she gets to the article?
I wouldn't recommend that approach because it could cause your dog to rush the search for the article, leading to ineffective and inaccurate tracking. I would dedicate a few months to focus primarily on tracking training, ensuring that the dog receives all their food during tracking exercises. If tracking becomes the sole method for your dog to eat, then they will associate tracking with mealtime. This means you will be able to use food effectively as a reward during tracking. :)
Hey I was wondering can you make a video on what to do if I’m playing with my dog in my not fenced in yard and my dog runs away (this has never happened but I want to know what to do if it does) for example I’m playing fetch outside in my not fenced in yard and my dog sees a cat and runs to chase after the cat and then he won’t come when I call him what should I do to get him back safely?
Yes, you would want a long line. If you want true off-leash reliability, then you would need a remote collar. You can learn how to use one here, from Michael Ellis. leerburg.com/ellis-ecollar.php?gclid=CjwKCAjwj6SEBhAOEiwAvFRuKA3K2XFsQCo6g_YNkPxcrcQBYVYuFHA2iZKgzxuT0KOAPJRIFqMn4xoCnbQQAvD_BwE
I need to ask two other quick questions, I hope that's okay :) 1. When training my dog a go pee or poo command, do I just say the word right before they do it until they connect the word with the behavior or do I mark and reward when they are doing it? Because I'm scared that the dog will stop the behavior and get the reward, and that's not what I want. And second, when I build up a correction marker, can/ should I reward when the dog is following the marker? For example my dog stares at a cat, I say "no", my dog has learned that " No" Means to stop something and get away, so my dog stops staring at the cat and goes a step back, should I reward the dog for following the correction?
1. Just take your dog outside and say the potty command. You can praise your dog while they are going potty. You don't have to mark and reward. 2. No. You can praise the dog for making the right decision, but you don't want to give a reward. The reason is that your dog may offer up the bad behavior, so you say no, they stop and get the treat.
Sir I suffer from Anxiety disorder n have underwent lot of treatment but couldn't able to come out of depression .. If you can help with this series I will be very grateful to you
Hey Nate, I was wondering do you know of any business that will give me a dog to train into a service dog? What I mean is they give me a free dog and I keep it in my house for how ever long it takes to be trained as a service dog then I give it back fully trained and they give it to someone who needs a service dog?? If you know of any that would be super helpful! Also if you know of any would they give me a like crate for the dog or would I have to buy the crate, food, treats, etc? Also this dog was not in this video but I just wanted to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE that little white dog you trained the small one that's all white he/shes super cute!
I'm sure a lot of places will offer something like this if you can prove to them that you can train the dog. I would suggest reaching out to a few places to see what they say. Cheers! :)
HELPING A SICK DOG. This isn’t a problem for me right now. I think it important that a pet, dog, cat, horse be trained to indicate pain and where it is. Without in anyway using pain to teach. Can you teach a dog the concept of sickness, pain and ask it if it is sick or In Pain? Can you teach a dog to respond if you point to a part of the body and say does it hurt there? Thank you
Dogs can pick out multiple smells individually unlike humans who only smell all scents combined. As explained in the video, the dog is learning the association between the scent and taste of the reward with the scent of the human.
If you place small piece if food deep into heel it becomes a REWARD not the goal. If dog is scenting the food, use low/no odor food Re: the tracking box…it's an association…
I am worried that teaching tracking would encourage my dog to eat random things off the ground. She already has a tendency to do so. Is it something to be concerned about or are the flags enough of an indicator that the exercise is separate from 'real life'?

I need to ask two other quick questions, I hope that's okay :)
1. When training my dog a go pee or poo command, do I just say the word right before they do it until they connect the word with the behavior or do I mark and reward when they are doing it? Because I'm scared that the dog will stop the behavior and get the reward, and that's not what I want.

How old is arih??
She's almost 6. :)
Wowwwwww
Cheers! :)
@@NateSchoemer Okay I have been trying to find one like that but I cant seem to find one any suggestions on what to look up or anything?
I'm here looking for jokes about "outside the box"
HELPING A SICK DOG. This isn’t a problem for me right now. I think it important that a pet, dog, cat, horse be trained to indicate pain and where it is. Without in anyway using pain to teach.
Can you teach a dog the concept of sickness, pain and ask it if it is sick or In Pain? Can you teach a dog to respond if you point to a part of the body and say does it hurt there?
Thank you
I want to know how you will let your dog to detect unwanted person.
Such as a felon search? I'll be making a series on that in the future. :)
@@NateSchoemer ok. Thanks
what are your tracking scores?
The dog is only tracking the food its used to get as a treat, not your sent as the dog knows your cent.
This is a professional
Scent
Dogs can pick out multiple smells individually unlike humans who only smell all scents combined. As explained in the video, the dog is learning the association between the scent and taste of the reward with the scent of the human.
If you place small piece if food deep into heel it becomes a REWARD not the goal. If dog is scenting the food, use low/no odor food
Re: the tracking box…it's an association…
7:58 Great way to get a dog sick and die because stomachache.
I am worried that teaching tracking would encourage my dog to eat random things off the ground. She already has a tendency to do so. Is it something to be concerned about or are the flags enough of an indicator that the exercise is separate from 'real life'?
what if the dog gets a habit of taking whatever food he finds in grass
Dogs are very situational. You can also correct them for picking up random things from the ground if you haven't told them to track.
Just looks like you walked a dog to some treets in the yard.
🤣
