Again don't be fooled to think anyone here watches these interviews for you and learn to take criticism constructively. It was 2 minutes in an hour long chat. But nevertheless. What do I even say! I wish you guys realised it wasn't making it about myself but just reflecting that all of us go through episodes that shape us. Never mind. It's a longer conversation and dont want to bore any of you.
This a universal problem with Indian journalists. They talk more than they listen. Their questions are more verbose than the answer, they go on forever and hunt to find a conclusion. And they want to "assist" the celeb rather than let them speak. We're clicking to listen to them, not the journalist. The journalist could very well do an introspective on camera pf themselves n their viewers will find them. N their questions are rarely questions. They're more setups for confirmation bias. Also, there is a WORLD of difference between objectivity and objectification. Do you think before you speak or is that not a part of your job description?
I have never contested these comments although I keep reading them. But today just broke my heart. Because what I shared had a very deep impact on me - and Vidya Balan's story of self doubt just reminded me of it. I wished you guys were a bit more empathetic. My interviews have always been a dialogue and more conversational than a regular QnA. But these reactions really numbed me today.

A big chunk of your interview had repeated questions - if you check out most of Vidya's interviews after the show she did with Anupam Kher, ALL interviewers have asked her about her "jinxed" status and her weight. I understand that you want to make the interview relatable to her, and make her open up more. If you take Vidya as the benchmark or guiding light, you understand the struggle she has faced. It took her decades to become successful enough for everyone to click on her videos. I'm sorry to say this, but despite your closeness with the celebrities it's going to take you some time to gather an audience and listen to you as well. I, for one, would love to listen to your interview by someone else or read a profile piece. I'm also an Instagram follower and generally choose you, Baddy, Faye, Anupama and sometimes Atika as my favoured hosts to watch interviews. But you *must* understand that we're investing time. It may seem like mere minutes to you, but it's still time. So as a journalist you cannot promise us Vidya's interview and do this. Your anecdotes could've been linked to the question you're asking. Even there they're ideally supposed to be 30 seconds or less. But your anecdotes followed her answers. And you finish that off with "I just felt like saying this". We're not with you in the room so it's not palpable to us watching on screen either. It seems rather ridiculous! You and the interviewee may share whatever connection, but for us to be interested in it the connection must be reciprocated by them. If they treat you similarly as a friend, it's not awkward to watch. So, respectfully, I do not retract what I said. However, my intent wasn't to hurt or taunt. These years are pivotal for life in general, not just your career. You're filled with grace, the ability to connect and speak well. Use it well!

But I do not retract my words because of these reasons - I understand he feels that there's some equation between himself and the celebrity (and it might be there behind the scenes or backstage), but when it isn't reciprocated by them on stage, during the interview it feels contrived and awkward for the viewer to watch. I've seen videos where Alia went out of her way to hug him before getting into her vehicle and stuff like that, but it's not the same vibe during the interview. Why? Let's take this interview itself. It took Vidya decades before she made a massive name for herself and is able to have an audience during such interviews. Nayan is still in his baby years, despite his oratory skills. Secondly, any anecdote makes sense if it is connected to the question. He can use a short (20- 30 second) anecdote to connect it to the question but not AFTER Vidya (or the celebrity) is done answering. That is to be done after the interview if he's overcome with emotion. Again, why? First is his lack of celebrity. It's not like a Farah Khan or a Karan who have a celebrity status of their own and a relationship with their guest is conducting the interview. It can be casual but it'll still revolve around the guest. Because the most important thing - time. The audience is investing their time. He can use anecdotes to get more answers from the guest. But not leave it hanging. That's not what the audience is there for (or it needs to have a disclaimer). He has the potential to be the first queer journalist that'll reach the likes of Faye, Karan with his talk show and Baddy and Anupama. But it's a process. Interest, time and attention aren't just given. Please take it in stride until you get that audience and get your own show!
I honestly felt I related with everything said in the interview by both the interviewer and the interviewee. So your observation just seems subjective. Not at all everyone else’s opinion. Love U Nayan. This was an incredibly heartfelt session.
