I think that means infanticide for 30 million girl babies (more since females are conceived slightly more than 50%) or abortions after doing gender-testing on the fetus.

After watching this, I learned it's worse in India than China. If countries had introduced Social Security in 1970 (when China did one-child policy), there would be less pressure to have a boy to take care of them in old age.

Happening in india too, not because of the government but because of peoples desire to only have male children. There is also a missing female ratio in India due to abortion of baby girls. There are also a lot of places where baby girls can be placed in a box when the parents don’t want them. Many rural Indian places have only men and they go to the city and kidnap young girls and women and take them back to the village and make them their wives. I watched a doco about a poor woman who was already married with a family and she was kidnapped and forced into marriage to an Indian man on a farm. It is horrific in both China and India!

Leftover women are highly educated ones in cities now maybe forced to marry rural men because they could not find mates in cities because they want men much better in cities.。2 months after I wrote this initial comment. I revised my observations, educated women rather be single and happy than marriage in the rural country where abuses by men and mom in laws are common. Wise choice.

China 1 child policy and girl feticide
It wasn't "female child mortality" it was female child abortion and infanticide. I was there in 1989, and the imbalance in the children was obvious then. In China girls were traditionally regarded as "maggots in the rice". Way back then, I knew that one day they'd fine their precious sons weren't much use if they didn't have a wife to carry on the family line with.

I feel sorry for them. I myself have 3 daughters. They all graduated from Universities. 2 are married and I have 3 granddaughters and 1 grandson. I am glad the Government in Indonesia does not prohibit people to have more than 1 child. I am blessed and grateful. I am proud of my daughters.
I wrote a paper about this in college in the early 90s. It was already evident at that time that there were far fewer girl babies being born and that it was not due to natural causes. I predicted “problems” when this unbalanced generation grew up but I didn’t know exactly what sort of problems. Now we are seeing.
My husband did a paper on it too in University. That's when I found out about it. Just heart-wrenching 😢

That's not actually the whole story. My chinese roommate told me that some families prefer to have sons and if it was a female, it's often get aborted.

Being from a rural area, unemployed, financially unstable, making men undesirable? As someone who studied psychology for many years and had been in countless relationships and is together with a partner for decades despite being poor and from a rural area, I don't agree. I like the journalism but that particular remark that kind of said women are into money is a myth that had brainwashed men who grew up influenced by Rom-coms and Disney movies. Stop relying on money because women are really most attracted to behavior while men are attracted to appearance and I'm speaking from a scientific perspective.
If a woman over 27 is considered a "leftover woman", even with the gender imbalance, it makes you wonder what that age would be if there wasn't a shortage of women.

As Japan also had issues with low birthrates, their prince (now king) needed to find his Japanese wife outside of Japan.

I was in Shanghai on a buy trip and we needed to catch a bus. Waiting for the bus I watched the children coming out of school, their Grandparent waiting for them. In the big group of children there were only 4 girls. I was shocked at the disparity.
I lived opposite a primary school in Xinglin Xiamen, it was so noticeable and obvious the boys outnumbered the girls.
Sound like the disparity is going to continue for a while, if it is noticable in such a young generation. I wonder, what further a degredation of womens rights and quality of life awaits? Since women will continue to be a minority, they might be over-ruled by chinese machismo.

During a visit to Beijing my guide said that at 30 he was not yet motivated to marry. But when he does the women shortage is not a problem for him. The rural women are so anxious to move to the city that he will have first choice of brides from all of rural China.
Those only child sons are called Little Princes because the parents dote on them, and spoil them endlessly with expensive tickets to events, the best of clothing etc. I fear marriages to persons so spoiled can hardly turn out happy.

When I lived in Japan, an American college introduced me to his Chinese wife. They told me that where she lived in the countryside, couples left female babies to die in ditches by the roadside because they only wanted ONE male child. She told me 20 million female children were missing in China (having being murdered), and that was in 1996. God knows what the situation is like now. And yes, they do kidnap women globally to sell to rural Chinese men.

One example, in South Korea, there's this former member of a group called AOA, called Mina, she said she was bullied by Sin aka Jimin, another former member of that girl group, Mina doesn't seem to have evidence of it, yet she keeps insisting, whichever version is true, basically one harassed the other, in Mina's case, because of trying to damage her image, if what she says it's not true. Mina has also been having mental health problems, that according to her, it's because of that bully incident, on the other hand, it's also aggravated by the people who does it online to her.
In school there were these 2 twin girls, who I never interacted with them, yet for years, they always had something against me and whenever they had a chance, they tried to insult me with insinuations, not harsh words, they never changed their mind.

The leftover women tend to be highly educated, good jobs, good salaries, good looking and are not looking to get married. Basically these ladies are on the top rung of society. Rural left over men tend to not have anything going for them, and may be considered to be on the bottom rung of society. It is hard to see these two groups marrying each other. And the ladies know it is a sellers market so they are not going to accept second best.
Same thing in the West. Women who earn more than Men would not want to date a man who earns less. And Women don't date downwards, because they always seek something BETTER.
The thing is, won't most of the women have to quit their high paying jobs to move to the country? What person would want that? The couple would likely be impoverished before they even start a family. It might be better for the man to move to the city and be a stay at home dad, but something tells me this probably isn't an option socially.

I am a teacher in Punjab and here also, on an average, in a class of 35 students we do not have more than 15 girls. Really sad.

There are still cultures and countries in the world where many brothers share just one wife between 2-5 brothers, and it's not done out of desperation it's just considered practical good sense.
That one child policies led to my family having two adopted girls from China. Back in that time, many girls were killed or sent to so called orphanages to die. It was horrific! It seems the CCP still has no clue as to what humanity is. It's so very sad. I truly feel for the Chinese people and their grief under the CCP's force of rule.
