You don't BUT I still love the PS1/PSP versions BETTER then this one and that's only because all SP costs for the skills are nearly 10x as much so instead of mastering ALL SP skills at 10 by LV 130 in this R version it can and will take 230 OUT of your 255 max lvs to DO so. That alone makes the PS1/PSP versions IMHO way better.
The only Star Ocean I ever played was the original version of this game. I managed to complete the game on my 2nd attempt, having been a bit discouraged/overwhelmed with how vast the crafting system was. I loved the exploring the towns, but the battle system started to tire me out in the end game. If I recall my childhood memories correctly, I used the Colosseum found late in the game to level up the two party members that I enjoyed using in fights to overwhelm the rest of the story's content. The ending annoyed me though, because I spent all game trying to romantically pair the male and female leads, only for the game to pair Claude with some mechanical robot arm girl, and Rena with a small genius child. Apparently, you earn affection with allies you pair up in battle, and I spent the entire game keeping the two heroes in separate parties as I tried to keep the power level equal between the two groups.
It was extremely hyped at release with everyone who covers JRPGs gushing over it, along with the original released being well loved. His titles are just clickbait.
I knew I would come back later and see this video at 1k views. Keep up the good work bro!
This game was great, but the background to be honest clash pretty heavily, and were better in the original.
do you need to play any previous games to fully enjoy this?
not at all !

The first three of star ocean games are the best.
