    People are making accusations that Sony pays Tony. I on the other hand still can't figure out why Sony doesn't pay Tony to fix their cameras and overcome many shortcomings which aren't limited by technology.

    Things I would like improve:
    1. To be able to select Rear Aperture Dial for ISO, without having the need for “My Dial 1”
    2. Independent reverse for Front/Rear dial.
    3.Indipendent Video/Photo mode EVF Sensor
    (Example: auto switch between EVF and Screen, but once it starts recording, the camera stays Screen Only, it keeps sensing my gimbal arm)
    4. Switching between movie and photo mode faster without having to hold and twist the dial

    • @Mockingmob
      @Mockingmob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No3 is confusing. Sony has a default setting where if you tilt the screen a little bit (up or down, doesn't matter), the camera stays screen only. It's specifically designed for gimbal use.

      @@Mockingmob I actually stumble upon this when I was playing with the flip out screen. Did not know it's a feature :o .
      My 8yr old Canon 650D can do that right out of the box (point number 3)

    Sony A7S iii is not a vlogging camera. It is a professional video camera that costs 4000$ without any lenses. Lets be serious. And even if you can afford it its not the best vlogging camera. It does not have small size and it doesnt have the best image stabilization.

    This video looks amazing. But that Sony camera is not cheap. Maybe a bit much for a beginner. Ok, if you can afford it then of course go for it. I started recently with a canon m50 shooting 1080p pumping out raw. I plan to eventually upgrade but no rush. I make really good looking video, not quite like this, but way acceptable. I have one of those dummy batteries that I plug into the biggest battery pack I could find(26800). When walking around, I have the battery in my back pack. At home I can plug that battery into the wall so it never runs out. That screen that goes to the side is a must have for me unless use an external screen or my phone. Isn't it fun? An idea is to record to the camera with a decent microphone and record to a good recorder separately just in case the mic pops out of the camera or some other issue. Redundancy is my favorite work. I recently got a mic preamp that accepts 2 mic inputs in any configuration with any type of plug. It's not expensive and the sound is crazy good.
    I know a guy who always shoots with 2 m50s held on a custom holder so he always has 2 of everything and can use different lenses etc. I think that It's a great idea. What do you think of the Affinity Photo software. It does everything that photoshop does and you pay once. And it's available on iPad. A lot of photoshop users are switching because if how good it is and the price. Actually the full photoshop is also available on iPad now.

    Perfect Vlogging camera, but then you list a ton of issues! Hahha. I agree that it's a perfect vlogging camera, but I guess this points out that no camera is perfect. There's always something tough to deal with! Even my R5 to me, has been the perfect vlogging camera. But that's my perspective. For someone else, they may hate it. But it's ok! Great video!

    Thanks for sharing your experiences. I was not aware of a problem with the "tap to track focus" in Sony compared to Canon. I wished you had gone more in depth on that part...that kind of usability issues are important for most. More important compared to record limits and overheating. The Firmware wish-list is excellent. Sony should start working on that list today for the A7SIII and FX3 !!!

    I believe you are 100% honest when you say that you are on the consumer’s side and nobody else’s. The problem is, you are switching platforms too fast. (I am not talking about reviews) Canon to nikon, nikon to sony, sony to canon, panasonic to sony, Fuji somewhere between etc. No consumer does that, that fast, due to the cost. I know a lot of people that did purchase d810 or d850 or an xt4 watching your videos, a few years ago. Those people need to know what they can do with the one they own as much as what your current setup/newest tech is capable of.

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Considering almost everyone buying the A7S III are buying it for video, it makes me curious why they are choosing this model over the FX3. The camera internals are identical, but the body is so much better. For example, the lack of EVF makes it more useable on smaller gimbals, the cooling is important in hot environments, and the five quarter/twenty sockets are pure gold and makes the FX3 dramatically more flexible.

      it makes sense for hybrid shooters who mostly do video but sometimes do photography

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mirrorlessny Hybrid shooters tend to not buy low megapixel sensors. They go for the GH5 instead of the GH5S, and they go for the A7 series rather than the A7S series. Video is the only logical place for low resolution sensors. When we get to a point where 8K becomes normal, that is when I see hybrid shooters entering the picture for the A7S of that era.

      I think a substantial number of A7S3 owners bought their before they knew the FX3 was coming, and one takes a substantial loss in selling an A7S3 just to purchase the FX3.

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KeithSklower Good point. I consider myself fortunate that I had to take time to save pennies for the A7S III, and that the FX3 came out while I was still saving up. For me, once seeing what the FX3 was, an A7S III with a far more useful body, the FX3 was clearly the better choice.

    The dynamic range at S-log 3 and even at S-Cinetone is outstanding. It's amazing how much detail can be recovered from the highlights, even at S-Cinetone. The biggest con for me is the LCD - it's unusable in direct sunlight. Glad to have the EVF, but should not have to rely on that. One strange issue I ran into last week was that all of my photos from one day were taken in S-log 3 when in manual photo mode, which I didn't even think was possible outside of the video mode. I had the gamma assist on, so couldn't tell until after I dumped the files. Has this ever happened to you?

      I'm very new with this camera so I'm not entirely sure about this. You can have different Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, Exposure Comp., Metering Mode, White Balance, Picture Profile, Focus Mode settings between stills and movie through the Toolbox > Different Set for Still/Mv menu option. Maybe that will prevent this from happening?

    Some good points were brought up in the video. However, I keep wondering why you still publish youtube videos in 1080p which even for 1080p don't look all that detailed. Why don't you also use the Sony A7S iii for your youtube videos or do you also use it here but apply such extreme compression?
    I also wonder whether Tony decided to actually buy 2 or 3 of these Sony FX3 which he mentioned in one of his last videos for his youtube setup. I can see why they would just fit nicely into his setup and the reasoning behind it.
    It seems like Sony has some great features but Canon makes sure their features are more stable (focus transition is not jumpy but smooth, lense aperture decrements in 7 instead of 3 steps on sony, no random jumps to other targets or losing the subject, automatic exposure, white balance in situations with different light sources ...).

    High five on no recording limits. It's a deal breaker and why I used video cameras since the beginning. Flip., Zi8, VIXIA, and now iPhone. Osmo Pocket when needed. Though the pocket can overheat and shut down. None of the others ever have that happen unless I was in direct sunlight (iPhone). I don't know how many DSLR/Mirrorless have unlimited now, but it seems like the vast majority of them still have that antiquated limit.

    They really need to update the resolution of that flippy screen. It’s painfully bad. I can’t manually focus with it, but that EVF is great. If they could add false color as a display mode that would also be phenomenal. Raw internal recording would also be pretty sweet. And another thread on the bottom would be great, too, to really lock the plate to the camera.. All that being said, for filming people, that eye auto focus blows me away how good it is with these new Gm lenses. But you’re completely right about how bad the focus is for when there is no human face to track. The camera does have a surprising amount of noise after base ISO - before you hit that second gain ISO, but it’s still a step forward. Still behind canon, I agree with your assessment.

    For your next video. The R3 will be a one-off with a single purpose, help professional photographers move to mirror less. It will focus on speed of workflow. So a new evf, gigabyte Ethernet. High speed wireless, and maybe the 20mp sensor. I think the future high resolution R will not have a battery grip. The R1 will be all of the above.

    Quick question, that first slide you had a point of needing proxies. My R5's codec is awful (i think its h265 444). Truly. I have a 9900k and 2080ti with 64gb of ram and scrubbing is insanely bad. The RAW codec is much better in that regard. How is the sony's?

      You will need proxies if you film in 10 bit 4:2:2 HEVC.
      Unfortunately only recent intel and M1(?) CPUs have support of 10 bit 4:2:2 video hardware decoding. GPUs are lack of this (or 4:2:0 or 4:4:4 possible). With 10 bit 4:2:0 even at 4 years old laptop with Nvidia gtx1060 GPU scrubbling of hevc is quite smooth. In DaVinci Resolve

    Coming from a6300 as my first Sony Camera to the recent a7s3, (ya I still have and will keep both regardless of what a1 or upcoming Sony Mobile 1 III) here are my thoughts: definitely for TH-camr (hmm non-paid ones prosumer), A7sIII is amazing for what I use it for. Feel free to watch my channel where I recently recorded a Dance activity event against cloudy daylight backstage where I had to use 24-70GM and adjust exposure compensation dial (I consider that as CMOS photon sensing EV adj). I also have bookmarked the PP Sony page for Slog-3 and HLG but I have a weird reaction and not use any of those-sometimes I just want to have the most crappy or standard quality 720p just for upload speed sake where nobody cares about my videos but just for my own memory keeping. And ya for those moments both 4K and HD are overkill. But I still upload them once I get home using a 120Mbit / 60Mbit upload speed and wait. Honestly, 5G isn’t yet prevalent and Sony has not allowed directly stream from Camera to wireless stream via an choosable OBS video source interface (but y I know Mobile Edge is croppable )--now, suddenly all that a1 , a7s3 , a7c becomes irrelevant but ya a Firmware and software update is needed for a6300 it what I mean is a direct streaming interface without buying 5G phone such as Sony Mobile phone 1 III. Blah thanks for reading my comments. CHEERS TONY.

Apart from the fact that his 1080p videos do not look very sharp (for their resolution), probably a result of heavy compression. Look at some cleaner 1080 footage on youtube (which is obviously compressed but not additionally I guess) from music bands and such and it looks so much more detailed.

      @WesPerry 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mirrorlessny Tony uses 60p for pretty much everything. And it's especially good for sit down talk videos that aren't dramatized, as it's more realistic, more approachable and connected. 24p/30p hides more, and is good at artificially increasing the fiction and imagination being created in a video (which is why it's good for cinema). But for real world stuff, 60p is far better. I'd move to 120p if TH-cam/technology allowed it at this point, to get it entirely out of the range of perception and take down all the barriers and artifice between presenter and audience.
