Big problem in Ottawa was Korpisalo but expecting Korpisalo to be good and start more games than he had ever started before. No back up plan when it turned out he couldn't.
I think the Woll gamble is a sound one to make.
Based on what? 35 starts, no clue what he is. Price is right I guess.

If I'm a leafs fan (I'm not) I'm pleased to see Woll get pretty much guaranteed starters minutes because he's real good, but I'm also worried about the workload issue with his injury history already coupled with the fact that Stolarz has never played more than 29 games.
My predictions woll has a top first 6 weeks and blows his knee stolarz is average and murray starts in the play offa
And Hildeby comes in and blows everyone away with how good he actually is.

They did try for Ullmark...he had Toronto as a no go on his no movement clause.

If they traded Marner they would have had plenty of cap space for a #1 goalie. They were in on Markstrom, and they were interested in Ullmark. They are $800k in the hole for cap space, Ullmark has a $5M cap hit.
The leafs MUST trade on of the 4 guys so they have money for goaltending and depth forwards. It's gotta be Tavares or Marner

It's a weak goalie lineup unless Woll hits big or Murray rediscovery his first year Pens form which doesn't seem likely. Not unexpected though when all you can afford for your whole goalie tandem is 5M per.

Signing a third goalie only makes sense if you are planning to run a tandem. We know Woll has issues with injury so they are going to have a trigger finger and send him on the IL if he has the slightest injury.

Woll needs to stay healthy...I am sold on him, if he is not hurt he is a quality #1 by his numbers. Just please for the love of God stop getting hurt!!! Murray is an Insurance plan for Woll. If Woll ends up hurt again the Stolarz and Murray tandem could be what we watch most of the year.

Also keep in mind that the Leafs may bring Hildeby up and give him 4-5 games just to see what they got.. so long as they don't play him 10 games or more to burn the first year of his ELC. I know Leafs left themselves in a spot to approach the goalie situation in the manner they did. But Murray is an insurance policy, per say, and if he gets hurt then he put him on LTIR ( again) and pick up another guy for that 3rd spot

i have this sinking feeling that we are looking at the Leafs line up come October. The Core Four in Leafs jerseys promising a Cup and having another first round exit in the playoffs, if they even make it.

Martin Jones proved this past season he's a viable backup somewhere. Murray knows this is his last chance to get back in the league and good on the Leafs for giving him one last shot.
So they still don't have a number one reliable goaltender. The Leafs complained so much about goaltending this past season and then they wet the bed this offseason by signing Murray and Stolarz. Nothing against Stolarz, but he is not a number 1. As for Woll, he is made out of glass. The Leafs went cheap on goaltending...again. Prepare for another goaltending issue talk this upcoming season
There's a cap bud. Gotta do what you can with what you've got to play with. Also, a bonafide number one isn't really neccessary anymore. Look at the Avs and Knights. Heck even Florida had a solid tandem in reality, with stretches of Bob remembering how he used to play lol

I am not knocking this goalie arrangement for The Leafs. I do find the talk about Joseph Woll extension eerily similar to the talk when they traded for Matt Murray.
Just watch Woll is going to have an average at best due to the defense in front of him and these guys will be back saying “well in Toronto we have a culture of never blaming the goalie but you need a save from Woll”

Apparently Lilly would've gotten upwards of 3.5 in arbitration, so this was probably the minimum he'd agree to. That being said, with them signing Tanev and Hak, the right isn't as bare, I agree, trade his ass.

I think that Stolarz is a solid signing for what the Leafs have to spend and Matt Murray is high risk, low price. It would have been better to bring back Jones or with Woll's injury record go harder on someone like DeSmith. As Steve said, not a lot of goalies available and if he''ll be playing behind the Leafs instead of Florida.
Panther fan here...Stolie is a good guy, coming from a good organization with an excellent goalie department. Faith is bestowed upon Spencer Knight, making Stolie expendable. I believe you will be pleased, no only with Stolie but OEL too.
@@ge2655h20 I think he's good, but he did have the added benefit of playing behind the Panthers, compared to the team defence of the Leafs, which can really throw goalies to the wolves.

Once again the leafs will enter another season without a true standout goalie. More bets, more spit balling, more of the same. 2 injury prone goalies and a backup - yup, thats about right.
How many standout goalies are there and how much are you willing to pay for them? Really the only way to get standout goalies now is to draft them, and most teams still don't believe in spending picks on goalies. Shesterkin drafted. Oettinger drafted. Hellebucyk drafted. Demko drafted. Still playing for original teams. Last time Leafs drafted for a decent goalie was Tuuka Rask. And we know where that went.
@@boneseyyl1060 Well yes and no. Belfour, Joseph, Anderson were all acquired through trade. Though Boston probably wouldn't want Ullmark to play in Toronto - why not just go for it and build out the team with solid goal tending in addition to the defensive additions? Ullmarks 5 million? Brodie pays for that - and next year Tavares stupid money comes off the books. I think the Leafs aren't thinking big and drastic enough - they are no where near cup contention and that's what this whole thing is about. The Tuuka Rask situation is another clear indication that the Leafs organization more times than not, has there collective heads up their ...fill in the blank when it comes to goalies. Raycroft for Tuuka good lord. Bringing back glass jawed Murray, yowza. Woll gets hurt after 2 games after sitting for months - yikes. The Stolarz deal is decent.
@@phillipc.1805 Pretty much agree. But those goalies you mention were pretty far back in the day. It's a different game now, especially when it comes to goalies. Agree Stolarz is a solid addition. Murray can play. He just can't play more than 5 games a year. Woll is starting to look sketchy too but I blame a lot of his injuries on the Leaf defence hanging him out to dry every other shift. Some of the new guys should help him out there.
I think they are doing what you want basically. Rebuilding from the back out. Lots of changes and a new coach, it should be a different team to watch this year.

Anyone investing 7+ into a goalie right now is a goof, no matter who it is. Superstar goalies don't win cups anymore, gettings 2 or 3 really solid tandem guys is the play. Even Florida was a strong tandem. Besides Tampa, most of the last several Cup winners don't have superstar goalies making 8-10.

@@CLIBBINSANDHAWGS Bob has significantly underplayed that contract every single year except maybe this one. Even this one, he got caved in right at the finish line, didn't he? They gave him a rest with the rest of their tandem, and then he came back and won them game 7.
If your proof of success is the Bob contract, your argument sucks. He's spend signifcant stretches of it being a 10 million dollar back up, tying that much to any one goalie is foolish in today's NHL.

They aren't depending on him. If he gets 10 games, he'll be lucky. Hildebeast is on the cusp on making the jump so if MM gets injured (apologies, *when* he gets injured), we're fine.

We got some good signings this year. Next year with Tavares and Marner gone you have 22 million to add a Rockstar goalie, and have 16 million to spend on adding more depth

He's not going anywhere until his contract expires. He will be a Leaf next season, and will disappear in the playoffs, if they get there.
