    Hey guys! Hope you're all doing well! Now for today's video I want to talk about why Ian Malcolm is so important to Jurassic Park! And the answer to that question can't just be summarized by saying "because he's right." In reality, there was actually a complete character arc for Jeff Goldblum to undergo in The Lost World that would have proved that he actually ISN'T always right! In fact Michael Crichton would even tell the readers of his 1995 sequel novel NOT to listen to Malcolm exclusively. In reality, Ian Malcolm's placement in the franchise as well as it's evolution in to Jurassic World is way more complicated than what some people like to say. In this video I discuss the first movie, the novels, old scripts and Fallen Kingdom! Hope you all enjoy! :D

      Malcolm has always been my favorite, but the consensus I have gotten was that Grant is the more popular character. The first film was about flinging an astronomer into the role of the astronaut. As much as I love Ian, I am most looking forward to Owen and Dr. Grants interaction in the 3rd JW film. One man who loves but also respects raptors meeting another man who loves dead raptors, respects them, but kinda doesn't have a great opinion of them alive to say it mildly. I would really like to see Grant be able to pet Blue and them build a bit of a bond with the assistance of Owen and also for Dr Grants resonating chamber to make a return. I just hope that they at least put enough love in care as they did with JW when making this film because I wasn't too impressed with Fallen Kingdom despite me liking certain aspects of the film.

    The reason Ian Malcolm is so important is because to me he feels like another parent to us. He tells us the truth we don't listen and then what he said becomes the truth. Which is what happens in Jurassic Park/lost world and fallen kingdom. And us the ones who grew up with JP now respect the character and his point of view.
    It's funny because as kid I hated the lunch scene in Jurassic Park like many but as an adult I have so much respect for the scene now.

    • @ZLRob
      @ZLRob 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It's funny how as a kid the only content you cared about was the dinosaurs and how you wanted to see more of them, but didn't care for the adult conversation scenes because you didn't understand the context within the topics covered. Yet now as an adult those scenes are the most important ones in all of your favorite movies.

      I can see him at the end of JW3 sitting in a lawn chair in his back yard, sipping a drink, eating some snacks. Possibly with his now grown daughter.
      When a little feathered Compy runs up, hisses, grabs a bite, then runs away.
      The daughter looks on concerned at what just transpired.
      But Malcom just gives his signature laugh. Signs. Mutters something about the chaos theory(A Micheal C. Quote from his novels), chuckles, and finally says.
      “See kid, I told you. Life finds a way.”
      He then pulls a hat over his eyes and grins knowingly.
      THE END.

      The thing is it's a philosophical standpoint. Being right with logic doesn't mean you're correct in what it is to be alive. Those views can and should shift as you learn to live life on life's terms. Nihilism only leads to the viewpoint that suicide is the only logical choice. I think Malcolm's evolution demonstrates the understanding of what being alive truly is. All of us will die, but not all of us will truly live.

    The reason I love Ian Malcolm is because of his monologue in the first film at the lunch table when they’re all discussing the moral implications of what John has done. Beyond just the chaos element of it and understanding that life will find a way and that trying to assert control over nature is both futile and presumptuous, my absolute favorite thing that Malcolm says is in response to John’s assertion that the JP scientists have done things no one else has and Ian replies,“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” I think that this is a very important lesson. As humans, we are lead to believe that we need to keep pushing and reaching for that next boundary, but in reality, if we don’t stop and self-reflect, aren’t we just doomed to create the vehicle of our own demise? I think a perfect example of this is the atomic bomb. It was probably one of the biggest innovations of all time, but does that mean that we really should have that power? I think in JW3 this theme is going to come back in a big way.

      @Official Redmond秘 Eh, she's not a nanny, she was Claire's assistant. She COULD have had another use but they chose not to pursue that. Though I don't think she'd have added a great deal through surviving. She could possibly have survived, since the Mosasaur did have two rows of teeth and might, possibly, have caught her between them to the point she could have clung onto them until the next moment it surfaced for air, then escaped. But that would have been a serious stretch. It probably would have taken hours to come back up, and the air inside its mouth was probably toxic.

    Malcolm is right- he's proven right in each film one way or another.
    I've read the books but to be honest don't recall the final passages you refer to.
    I do find it strange that even though he bookends Fallen Kingdom, we're basically rooting for characters who disagree with him, and entirely succeed in their efforts to apparently disastrous result. Chris Stuckmann mentions that in his review- that Malcolm is fundamentally right and the audience is supposed to side with him but Fallen Kingdom expects us to do the opposite, he argues without giving us a good enough reason to do so.

      @UCBhhVpudS0Pqg1YqAJOANEw 1- ALOT can happen in 30 ESPECIALLY with fast improving tech.
      2- ingen want to protect their assets from being produced BY OTHER companies.
      that doesn't mean they don't have files on how to operate on them
      how do you think they hire new animals trainers?
      in fact since they want to protect their assets, they'd teach as many people as POSSIBLE!!!
      3- clearly he's never ACTUALLY talked to people in zia's situation.
      THERE'S ALWAYS a first time!
      not to mention that removing a bullet is NOT that difficult if you know the proper producdure.
      besides ellie and sarah had never seen a LIVE dinosaur PERIOD!!!
      nor were they vets
      yet they did just fine.
      BONUS: insulting is putting it mildly.
      now what would YOU say about those points?

    • @taliesincoleman6569
      @taliesincoleman6569 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @UCBhhVpudS0Pqg1YqAJOANEw 1- indeed
      2- I think you know as well as I that's not quite true making a cast for a broken leg is VERY tricky
      dinosaurs have hollow bones.
      especially in sarah's case where she had to give the animal morphine but had to be VERY careful not to give him too much.
      anyrthing you can say to back me up?

    • @Competitive_Bid_
      @Competitive_Bid_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Taliesin Coleman well not all bones are the same some bones are hollow while some aren’t in the case of a dinosaur it depends on what species it is in order to make a proper cast for it for instance a Tyrannosaur may need a differentcast then a velociraptor because while a velociraptors bones are hollow a Tyrannosaurus aren’t.
      Do you agree with my statement?

    That clip from the book I remembered per baytum. His entrance somehow struck me pretty well it seems.
    Honestly this analysis really makes his character far more interesting. Ian always has felt like that person that is almost a force of nature in of himself, having an insight that rings with absolute truth.
    And yet this makes him far more human and reveals that even though he may be right, he's also not. Life is neither right nor wrong. It just is and does as things fall into place. Chaos in beautiful synchronization.
    The books are beautiful. Everything about them from drawing me in from the primal pull of dinosaurs, to the thrill of adventure and danger... and to those amazing lessons that can be applied to how you see life- Micheal, Spielberg, and now you, just make it all one of the best things life has to offer.
