I remember trying out CoD3 and BF2 online a few years ago out of curiosity. I was surprised that a handful of people still played them. I didn't realize Sony left the DNAS running up until 2016, but then again we are talking about Japan here, which still had FDS kiosks in the early 2000s.
If you mean the opening music, it is actually by Jochen Hippel, title music from the game A Prehistoric Tale. Jogeir did a mod conversion, but the original is Hippel. th-cam.com/video/0bzFbrufMyw/w-d-xo.html

It is online though, can't remember which but a group of people hacked the japanese version back in 2014. Last time l checked it was working, they even made an english patch for it.
That's a fantastic presentation of a tech / gaming project. It's well researched and shows niche community solutions to technical problems that no-one expected could be solved. Wonderful stuff.
Resident Evil Outbreak 1 and 2 are still played online with hacked roms on a custom server. I played Outbreak 2 in Europe back in 2005-2007 until the servers were disconnected by Capcom, that is still one of my favorite 4 player co-op zombie games, it's an old fashioned Resident Evil game where you hunt for items, explore, do puzzles while fighting enemies with a boss battle at the end of each stage, if you die you're out and the rest of the team mates have to continue without you, modern zombie games are too action packed and not as calm or atmospheric as the Resident Evil Outbreak series, the games were really special and it's a shame Capcom abandoned the series.
@RS1 its a method of playing games on a ps2 that are not original discs you woud SWAP the disc after the water mark was read on the disc (the ps2 spash screen) this was a ok method if you were fast and had the correct mods for your ps2 good for game disc backups and homebrew but fmcb+ netowrk/hdd loading is the way to go now as its more stable and not dependent on your swap speed and timing
Bevan Piercy , Thought I had seen server entries at Bobz' recently so I was curious. I'm assuming a lot of these fight results ps2online.tk/mkarmps2/lastfights.php are from those in your group then. I'm contemplating setting up a proper arcade joysticks and buttons setup for that experience on a podium in front of a wall-mounted screen and speakers somewhere down the line, room permitting. Any tips at mitigating input and video lag?
Yeah we've tried Bobz recently and had no luck getting through, but we all keep testing. I've told the group to have both Bobz and Christian's DNS on their PS2s as 2 different settings so we can easily switch between them. As for the log on Christian's DNS, looks like other people not in the group. A lot of people play the game from other countries, and I know Armageddon is very popular with one group on Facebook (Not English). As for input lag, there isn't a lot you can do as I'm running my PS2 on a CRT using RGB Scart. It should be lag free, but the nature of Deception and Armageddon online is input lag. But if you're interested let me know and I'll send you an invite to our Discord group. I've got quite a bit to clean up, streamline the guides and start getting more people online. I need to also get a PCSX2 guide up. I'm trying to do the best that I can to give everyone every option available. But it's recommended that people use a fat PS2 and a hard drive for the fastest load times and it keeps everything synced up properly. In the works I'm also looking to get Unchained and MK9 added to our list of games so we can hopefully get more members. I've been running this group for 2 years and it's been very hard to get the people I did.
I surely would love playing ps2 online again how the years goes by I currently own 2 ps2 fat versions along with ps2 slim 3 versions of ps3 one ps1 console and a old model ps4. Hopefully by black Friday I'll get the spiderman 1tb ps4 slim bundle soon.
I love how you didn't bullshit for half hour to give an hour. "The question is can you still get your ps2 to go online in 2018. The answer is yes." Thank you.
That's a flip-top lid for the PS2. It's a 3rd party accessory that has to be installed onto the system in place of the normal lid. It's used to bypass the 3 sensors on the slim PS2 so that you can open the lid and swap out games without the system knowing that the disc tray/lid is open. Using it in conjunction with Swap Magic, you can play import games, as well as burned copies of games, on the PS2 without the system rejecting it as something other than a PS2 game, bypassing any region lock or copy protection.
I'd love to go back an play some old PS2 games online. Some of them were really fun. Monster Hunter, Need for Speed Underground 2, Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, Resident Evil Outbreak, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 ect, and of course all the various LAN games like GT3 A-Spec. Had so much fun on these back in the day.
I've read that Ps2 is still being widely sold in South America, and likely other countries, for insane prices (upwards of 600$ for the console alone). Pretty crazy.
Another great video MVG! The DNS you were using had rules set up to redirect DNAS requests to a replacement server + Gamespy requests to Openspy (open source gamespy emulator), however for a period of time until yesterday the Gamespy redirects were configured incorrectly due to IP address changes on Openspy's end. Openspy are about to host their own DNS server with PS2 game support in mind. For XLink configuration, it's worth noting you either need a DHCP config, or a static IP config generated from teamxlink.co.uk/ps2assign with netmask 255.255.0.0 There's a second way to bypass DNAS for users with modded consoles, ISO patches with PS2 patch engine. Some of these can be found on the PS2 Online Gaming website, though this is really only worthwhile for Call of Duty 3, the only game that still has official servers running. There are also a few games that have replacement servers available that don't require DNAS bypass such as Twisted Metal Black: Online, and Tribes: Aerial Assault.
Demon27248 , Given that, definitely worth a follow-up vid once having checked in with the community for current server status to offer coverage and opinions for the "online" gameplay, not just LANing over internet using XLink Kai.
Unofficial Lee , If not already implying and you're interested in having the best of both worlds, there's an approximately $13 USD IDE-to-SATA adapter mod board that retains the ethernet jack for LAN, XLink Kai and Online / Netplay. From there, there are various options with SATA drives (HDD and SSD) and an additional SATA adapter for playing from an internal microSD card. Cheers!
I finally was able to get online after the slimline came out and I was giddy with joy. my multiple attempts to play smackdown vs. raw 2007 online only resulted in frustrating ass beatings by topless CAWs
Man, Battlefield 2 Modern Combat really needs a remake or something, seeing as you can't play it with the Xlink Kai. Or maybe a map pack for a more modern Battlefield?😍
Talk about a blast from the past still remember reading about people using xlink with Armored core in US due lan, but not online like game had in Japan.
I had the original with the adapter, it felt like some next level shit screwing that sucker on. I mainely played medal of Honor rising sun. Great times.
SOCOM 2 is the first game I ever played online! I had the version with the headset so I could give commands to the computer in singleplayer and use it for voice chat when online! Good old days! 😎
I have a hunch that NetSurf would support HTTPS just fine if there's a way to set the current date (especially the year). Even a PC fails to load HTTPS when it looks like a site's security certificate was issued in the future.
Awesome video as always 😁 I knew about Kai but I had not heard of the custom DNAS servers set up until now. Is that a fliptop modded PS2 Slim, by the way? I've only seen them for phat systems!

I bought my ps2 way back in 2001 and it still runs and it's had a busy life from 4house moves, many drops some from some height. It also survived my son baby fingers all over it. Now my 11 year now son uses it. Name any other console that could handle that. Best games console ever made
Ohhhh man. Shooters on PS2 don't really age well. But getting a few buddies together for 4-player Champions of Norrath and Discord voice chat? That'd be sweeeeet
In the early 2000s everyone were playing PS2 in CRT TVs because the system was build to be played on those screens. If you try it on an HDTV the image will be stretched and horrible because it's not running in the native resolution and aspect ratio. PVM as mentioned above gives way better quality of them all as it's a professional and not consumer CRT screen. In this case it's a monitor build for Commodore Amiga, while it's not a PVM CRT it still gives a very good image quality and is one of the best CRT monitor ever produced.

@@NightFyreTV amazing to hear friend i love these games too just played it on ps2 emulator ..... i miss those times they dont make too many good games like they used too ..
I remember trying out CoD3 and BF2 online a few years ago out of curiosity. I was surprised that a handful of people still played them. I didn't realize Sony left the DNAS running up until 2016, but then again we are talking about Japan here, which still had FDS kiosks in the early 2000s.
One of my classmates is an anime lunatic, and writes essays in japanese.
I am not joking.
so long as you can play a game, the console is never dead.
ps2: never
vita: never
ouya: who even cares...
Geo Belmont Onlive: no one even remembers
- -
It was an interesting idea.
I’m guessing not enough people had connection to a good infrastructure to think it was worth their time
Yeah. The Snes, n64, Dreamcast... a lot of them
Wii: never
_ _ You know the Onlive got buyed by sony and the Onlive servers are the playstation Now stream service.
Xlink is dope. It was a surreal moment when I was playing Gran Turismo 4 online, while in a discord call, with a friend 6 hours away.
Geeeez, my bro and I had hundreds and hundreds of hours on socom 2. Pretty much introduced clan gaming and the use of clan tags. Such a great game.
Ah I instantly recognized the song by Jogeir Liljedahl. Nice choice :) He's makes such awesome tracker tunes. Also, thanks for the awesome content.
If you mean the opening music, it is actually by Jochen Hippel, title music from the game A Prehistoric Tale. Jogeir did a mod conversion, but the original is Hippel. th-cam.com/video/0bzFbrufMyw/w-d-xo.html
dam i sunk a LOT of hours into socom online....also tribes was a big ps2 online game back in the day...i did some beta testing for everquest online but really stuck to the shooters....so many good memories ...man if there's even the tiniest chance he's watching; shoutout to Limp Bizquick...met the guy playing socom and had some fun matches.
brodysdaddy I really hope that guy sees your comment someday
Perfect early 2000s gamer tag
ohhh man, I would love to play Resident Evil Outbreak again. I got the game very late so I played very little of the online.
It is online though, can't remember which but a group of people hacked the japanese version back in 2014. Last time l checked it was working, they even made an english patch for it.
Raymond Shades obsrv.org, I still play it regularly actually lol, I guess I can help with that
Which file of outbreak did you play?
Raymond Shades shit im done to play some right now
Nestle done or down? xD
The ps2 online services shut down in 2016? Impressive!
Kostas123GR2 well the Authentication service was shut down
Not really the console was made till 2013 .. so 3 years after being discontinued eh
That's what I said, 2016? You mean to tell me it's been active over ten years and I've been missing out on the fun for that long?
That's when the last few servers were shutdown, most online servers for games were gone long before
Your ps2 slim looks a bit different than mine, funny.
It's only the custom door for the discs, nothing else
Looks nice
@RS1 I'm guessing because he wanted to give it a PS1 look and/or the original lid broke.
@RS1 he explains its for the swap magic in other vids
@RS1 its a method of playing games on a ps2 that are not original discs you woud SWAP the disc after the water mark was read on the disc (the ps2 spash screen) this was a ok method if you were fast and had the correct mods for your ps2 good for game disc backups and homebrew but fmcb+ netowrk/hdd loading is the way to go now as its more stable and not dependent on your swap speed and timing
Mortal Kombat Deception And Armageddon are still online. I run the Mortal Kombat Klassics Discord group and we are currently at 112 members.
Bevan Piercy ,
Which DNS(s) is your group typically using? Are those your group's "last fight results" listed at xCristiahnX's server log?
Because Bobz hasn't worked for the longest time we've all had to use xCristiahnX's server.
Bevan Piercy ,
Thought I had seen server entries at Bobz' recently so I was curious.
The music and calm australian voice over is giving me ptsd of science videos in high school.
I love how you didn't bullshit for half hour to give an hour. "The question is can you still get your ps2 to go online in 2018. The answer is yes."
Thank you.
which PS2 model is this? The CD lid seems strange. Is it custom?
MusicDiscoveryNet | MDN yes it is
Originaly its Slim.ver looks like, but where did that CD Lid came from?... From another CD Player? Or...
andreas masal yea ive never seen a slim ps2 like that one before either.
That's a flip-top lid for the PS2. It's a 3rd party accessory that has to be installed onto the system in place of the normal lid. It's used to bypass the 3 sensors on the slim PS2 so that you can open the lid and swap out games without the system knowing that the disc tray/lid is open. Using it in conjunction with Swap Magic, you can play import games, as well as burned copies of games, on the PS2 without the system rejecting it as something other than a PS2 game, bypassing any region lock or copy protection.
andreas masal you can find them on Ali express. Or sometimes eBay
Has more players then H1Z1 today.
You should do a video on Free MCBoot too :)
agreed! would love this
I agree
He needs to make a ps2 softmodding video
thanks, i may look into doing this
I found out recently that Free McBoot won't won't work on my PS2 Slimline. Before buying a memory card with it thankfully.
I just realized that I watch a lot of your videos multiple times just out of enjoyment
Great shirt, even better video. LONG LIVE THE KING, of the mountain and the PS2.
fifa 14 is on PS2, if that means anything
If its the same as on Xbox you can only play games that support sys link
Reminds me of Just Dance and the Wii, their relationship just will not end.
NonsensicalVids wow that crazy lol
woodro morgan was the last Fifa to be released on ps2
and pes 2014
btw , there's pes 2018 , however it's a patch for pes 2018
0:47 childhood right there, SUPER loud SCE sound effect
PlayStation 2 isn't dead for me, i still play on it, Crash is lit.
I just bought the crash bandicoot action pack for ps2 because i wanted my childhood back😂
Thank you for the update I'm always seeing people saying PlayStation 2 was dead
I'd love to go back an play some old PS2 games online. Some of them were really fun. Monster Hunter, Need for Speed Underground 2, Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, Resident Evil Outbreak, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 ect, and of course all the various LAN games like GT3 A-Spec. Had so much fun on these back in the day.
Best youtuber
I've read that Ps2 is still being widely sold in South America, and likely other countries, for insane prices (upwards of 600$ for the console alone). Pretty crazy.
False, in Colombia you can buy one used ps2 Slim in perfect working conditions for $50 with some games
@@edwinandres32 Columbia is only one country.
@@XykuJoxa Columbia is not a country, It is Colombia.
I've seen them too, but they're super cheap. I think people buy them primarily to play PES, which remains insanely popular here in South America.
@@cesarbravo822 I hope the use crts with it
Another great video MVG!
For XLink configuration, it's worth noting you either need a DHCP config, or a static IP config generated from teamxlink.co.uk/ps2assign with netmask 255.255.0.0
There's a second way to bypass DNAS for users with modded consoles, ISO patches with PS2 patch engine.
Thanks for the information! I'll be sure to remember that. This video was really useful as well, can't wait to get back into the game now!
great info. thanks man
CHC forever
Demon27248 ,
Given that, definitely worth a follow-up vid once having checked in with the community for current server status to offer coverage and opinions for the "online" gameplay, not just LANing over internet using XLink Kai.
Any chance Frequency or Amplitude still work?
damn! that socom 2 music. takes me way back. definitely played that game more than any other ps2 game.
I just copped a mint launch PS2 from my in-laws last week and am super stoked.
Remember when all you needed to play online was a Wi-Fi connection now you have to buy stupid ass cards every god dam year
*Connected my toaster to Sony servers in 2018 and got a free Blockbuster movie rental!*
I'l take that.
Hah! By 2038 - how to get your PS4Pro, Xbox One X and Nintendo Switch to play online.
World of Retro Gameplay dude just shut up this isn't about a ps4 Xbox one or Nintendo switch

Saw socom. Learned there’s a way I could play it again. HOW COULD ONE NOT LIKE THIS VID.
The fact that there are still people playing online on ps2 it's crazy! :o
I absolutely love PS2, just brought a SATA Network Adaptor and a SATAT HDD. Ive been hooked on GTA San Andreas these past couple weeks.
Unofficial Lee PS2 GTAs > GTA 5
Unofficial Lee ,
Is it the SATA-compatible model with an unwired, non-functional ethernet jack?
Just2Options? Irrational: FearOrExuberance? Yes, but I also have the official IDE Network Adaptor
Unofficial Lee ,
If not already implying and you're interested in having the best of both worlds, there's an approximately $13 USD IDE-to-SATA adapter mod board that retains the ethernet jack for LAN, XLink Kai and Online / Netplay. From there, there are various options with SATA drives (HDD and SSD) and an additional SATA adapter for playing from an internal microSD card. Cheers!
Unofficial Lee how many people be online
I finally was able to get online after the slimline came out and I was giddy with joy. my multiple attempts to play smackdown vs. raw 2007 online only resulted in frustrating ass beatings by topless CAWs
Lol
Man, Battlefield 2 Modern Combat really needs a remake or something, seeing as you can't play it with the Xlink Kai. Or maybe a map pack for a more modern Battlefield?😍
I still play Resident Evil Outbreak 1 and 2 online, too bad you didn't try it out for this vid, it's still quite active!
Talk about a blast from the past still remember reading about people using xlink with Armored core in US due lan, but not online like game had in Japan.
Some of the earliest PS2 games predate the release of DNAS, such as SOCOM 1 and Twisted Metal Black don't have a DNAS check.
KomradeMikhail ,
Were Tribes: Aerial Assault and early Tony Hawk titles as well?
@@That_Handle Yeah.
Please try make a video for PSP online in 2018
Kratos GOW this would be great.
I still play Portable Ops on my psp.
really? as far as im concerned portable ops has continued to be dead despite its resurrection via coldbird servers.
TooLameToDie how is that even possible?
I would love to see medial of honor heroes psp online. Best game ever
I had the original with the adapter, it felt like some next level shit screwing that sucker on. I mainely played medal of Honor rising sun. Great times.
If you told me as a kid in the late 2000s that the PS2 (let alone Dreamcast) had internet I wouldn't have believed it.
SOCOM 2 is the first game I ever played online! I had the version with the headset so I could give commands to the computer in singleplayer and use it for voice chat when online! Good old days! 😎
3:43 Oh wow, the website uses Windows XP icons, and the classic Twitter logo…
Kevin Bhasi Aren't those logos still in 10? I'm pretty sure defrag is because it's essentially a legacy application.
It's weird, with a plug-in or when my Firefox bugged out or something, I was able to see the old Google as well. They didn't just remove it...
It was used for swap magic, check out: th-cam.com/video/Z7yfw7DVLew/w-d-xo.html

Wow... Mario is here
Gunna have to get that top if I ever get a PS2 slim
This is the best Playstation video ive ever seen
I bought my ps2 way back in 2001 and it still runs and it's had a busy life from 4house moves, many drops some from some height. It also survived my son baby fingers all over it. Now my 11 year now son uses it. Name any other console that could handle that. Best games console ever made
Ohhhh man. Shooters on PS2 don't really age well. But getting a few buddies together for 4-player Champions of Norrath and Discord voice chat? That'd be sweeeeet
Someone wants to try Burnout 3?
I would love to experience my childhood again.
My dad, brother and I would play that for hours 😂
My shit don't work sadly and I'm trying to get this shit running now and not be lazy
Sounds good
Kinda dramatic using a screen from the 80s to exaggerate how old the ps2 is
That's a PVM I think. Gives you far better picture quality than a standard CRT TV.
its for picture quality.. its not good to play older consoles on hdtv/ monitors
@@mcLOVINdonalds Actually, if you play it on a HDTV using a component cable, it's not that bad at all.
@@kacciahrula most hdtvs have component, but not all. Definitely in the case of monitors. All I own is monitors, my mom has a tv but i dont own component cables either, so that was my 2 cents.
EverQuest Online Adventures for life! Cool to see later on we figured out how to bypass DNAS.
Good video. I miss the days of playing "twisted metal black", "socom" and other awesome games online. It was a way different experience before you could grief, troll, use hacks or other things. Thanks for the memories!
