In this video I'm pouring a new concrete floor over an existing concrete floor.
If you want to know if there's anything special you have to do before pouring concrete over concrete, I show you and explain it all in the video.
My rule of thumb is: If your pouring at least 3" thick or more over your existing concrete floor, patio, slab, driveway, you don't have to bond the concrete together.
If your concrete pour is less than 3" thick, then I recommend using a bonding agent like Weld Crete to bond the two concrete slabs together.
If you're using Weld Crete, just brush it on your clean concrete, scrub it in and make sure it covers everything, wait for it to dry to touch, then pour your new concrete right over it.
If you're slab is thicker than 3", then you just pour the concrete like you would any normal slab, floor, or patio.
This is how I've been doing it for over 39 years with no problems.

Mike, not sure if you’ll see this comment, bc this video is 4 yrs old…I’ve watched quite a few of your videos, and you’re my concrete go to guy.
Water from my roof has made my sidewalk sink on one side, so I’m going to pour concrete over it, (and redo the downspout drainage). This video answers many questions for me. I’ll clean the existing concrete, using a bonding agent, and do a 1 1/2”-3” pour. Probably broom finish it to keep from slipping in winter. Thank you for your insight and info, Mike.

I've been watching your videos quite a bit Mike. I'm learning a lot, and my wife and I are about to fill in our 70's style sunken living room. Our first pour was a concrete counter top in the kitchen. It came out nice. The way you narrate your videos really helps me to understand key points! Thanks so much!

These garage floor videos have answered all my questions on pouring over old garage slab
My 20x25 ish two car garage was poured in about 1970- very little cracking, no heaving or elevation changes just chipped surface and bad sloping towards the back wall.
    Thanks Mike!!

Your video just gave me a little more confidence on my decision to pour concrete over my existing garage floor. My floor is lower than the sidewalk and alley so I always have sitting water when it rains/snows. I wanted to do small rebar and raise it about 4-5 inches with high psi concrete. I was on the right track, just didn’t know if it’s something people normally do. Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into that course.

Thank you for your video and sharing your wisdom. I have an addition on a slab, connected to a modular home. Obviously the main part of the house is about three feet higher floor level. On the West Wall of the downstairs room , we have had water issues from under the door and some of the wall. I'm not sure if any kind of wrap or seal or even liquid nails under the sill plate. We recently had a porch added on extending 12 ft out front thinking we wanted this anyway, it should take care of the problem. I noticed that the contractor I used did not grade the new slab at all and Mom the water runs towards the wall and not away from it. Now once again I have water coming under the door and wall. I'm not sure how much I can add without getting above the floor level so if it ends up being two or three inches that'd be great but I think I may only have an inch or so to play with, to be able to pour on top of the slab and correct the grade. My question is, am I looking at jackhammering out away from the rock exterior of the house, (yes rock, so it's not just cut and dried to remove the outer layer), and putting in a French drain or weeping tile, or is there another possibility? Thank you for your time. DB

Hey Mike, I been searching for some ideas on a task that involves pouring over a 21'x22' cement floor garage, but I wanted to raise it by about a foot. Also, have thought about expanding the length to about 28'-30' which would mean adding to the floor. That makes it a bit complicated, so still thinking about it.
Your videos are outstanding and your willingness to share your techniques and include advice is a rarity these days, so thanks for that. I am a DIYer and appreciate any ideas.

Ps. I'm also planning and using old demolished bricks as filling on the extension section. Crushed up of course. Any tips on that❓

I have a patio that looks like the previous owners added to twice. The main portion has a low spot right near the back door, so water will sit there & in NC we get rain well into winter AND spring. The drain holes are at the end of the patio, but the water never reaches them, lol! I had asked 2 diff contractors about putting concrete over it to correct the previous DIY. Both gave diff answers, but both said you couldn't do it at all. I knew they were wrong, but I needed the technical info like this video! You're awesome! Now, I can price it out to see if it will be worth doing myself or if I should hire a concrete company. Thank you so much for sharing this!

I poured a new slab 24x36 with a 12” thicken edge. Two and half trucks. All were supposed to have 1% calcium. Only the last load was mixed properly and cured out about noon. The rest was curing about 5pm to power trowel. Top layer froze that night now I need to pour a new one or pour over this one. Your video helped me a lot.

Yep. I used that weld concrete bond for my new front porch step remodeling. Now you can have a concrete lip of 2 inches so the garage doors don’t have to be changed. That’s much cheaper. My parents did that for their tool shed and stored their collector car and truck in there.

Happy I found your channel. Learn something new. Will have to watch additional videos you posted just so I can ask the right question. I had to drill out the bathroom floor that was built on slab concrete. In Thailand they create a mud out of cement and sand with water which they lay down on concrete. They then put a mixture of cement and glue on the tile and add the same onto the mud before laying down the floor tile. A pipe (hot water pipe) leaked and destroyed the ceiling below. Now I wonder if I could add a new concrete layer on top in the bathroom? Or do I need to lay down a bonding agent? Thank you for your time.

Great video! Just want to make sure my contractor is steering me in the right direction. I live in NC so the winters are mild, although we get plenty of freeze thaws. I had a 30 year old mortared brick walkway and when we removed the bricks we found a cement base that is at least 3 inches thick. The base is solid, no cracks. If we pour 3 inches of new concrete on top should we be fine? And how do you prepare the old concrete prior to the pour. Should it be pressure washed to remove all lose debris? Is wire optional or a must? Any other hints are greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike, thank you for sharing! I'm curious if you have capped floors like this on concrete driveways? We had our driveway done in 2019 and unfortunately we had a bad job done and couldn't go after the guy without losing $. Would love to know if this is something we could consider doing to help level out the 20x40 "back lot" the leads into our garage. The concrete is super unlevel and gets puddles, and in the winter, it becomes an ice rink and very unsafe for my Grandparents who walk on it.

Thanks for the Video Mike - this gives me hope that I might be able to use concrete for my job, but your insight would be helpful. A previous owner enclosed the old back patio and turned it into a mud room in my house, but they didn't level the slab. The room is approx. 100 sq ft and the lowest point away from the home's foundation is about 3.5" lower than the entry into the room, so the thickness will range from 3.5" - flush with the existing slab. Two companies have quoted over $4k to use a microtopping concrete overlay, but I can't afford to spend that much. Can concrete be used to bring it close enough to then finish the level with leveling compound?

Hey Mike love the video! I am going to remodel what was a 2 car garage into some extra bedrooms. There is about a 6 inch gap in floor from garage slab (in ok shape) to the finished floor of the house. The garage has cinder block walls. If I pour a slab on top of the old slab (thinking of leaving about 1 " difference so I can add a barrier then plywood for carpet) is there any risk to the new slab putting pressure on the existing cinder walls? Love the videos keep up the good work!

Hi. Great video and answered some questions. I have a carport attached to my wood workshop. I plan to wall in the carport to expand the shop. The carport slab dips down in the centre for a drain. At the point where it meets the shop, there is a height difference of about 1.5-2 inches,, maybe dipping to a 3-4 inch drop at the drain. Using the weld Crete, you think I can go ahead and pour on top of the slab with mesh and it will be ok? I was wondering if the edges may crack around the outside as that’s is the thinnest part of the slab. It’ll only be walking on and maybe a wood working machine sitting in top.

Hey Mike, GREAT video! It looks like this may work for me. My garage floor has been cracked and settled for probably 35 years. It's cracked and settled anywhere from 2" in the center to as much as 6" around the perimeter. Kind of like large slabs broken off the center point. Can I go over this existing concrete situation? I'm also replacing the overhead door so I could pour even deeper (raise the door). What do you think? Thanks again for the video.

Great video! I subbed to your channel. Question. My house has a tar and screed subfloor over slab. I've been told that I will never get all that tar up. Can I do a 2" pour over the existing tar and 2x4's?

This is very interesting. I love the improvement and you really have a great work ethic about doing this correctly. I do have a question. I have an aggregate patio and I wonder can a similar treatment be done to lay concrete over that? I dislike the pebble surface of the aggregate and would love a smooth concrete surface.

How about a fresh mixture of 1 to 1 Portland cement and sand?

Hey Mike, Thanks for a great video! I have a 4" pad for a garage that never had a structure built on it. I want to expand the pad to go 3" over the old pad and make thickened edges outside of the old pad to support the structure (26'x32' with bonus room apartment on top). Old pad seems pretty stable, it has expansion joints and a couple long cracks but it is still nearly level. Does that sound doable to you if I support with re-bar and no bonding between pads?

    Love your work.
I have a 50 year old patio. In good shape. Slopes back to house in area 13x6. Patio is 15x15. I would like to pour on top of it pitching it to the other side. Also extending it 5x15. Thoughts would be appreciated. MA so I get the frost and all the good stuff you guys get.

Excellent Video! There are almost no resources online about concrete over concrete floors. Thank you.
I notice in this situation, the walls were raised on curbs. On would you do this in a garage where the walls go straight to the floor? Remove the walls or pour around them?
Trying to raise my carport 3.5 inches and close it in. But there is a laundry room built out there already.

Hey Mike...I love your videos. I have a front porch of about 5x8' that was covered by 2 X 6 treated wood. The concrete slab is really badly crumbling on top. I will have to grind and chip it down to where its solid and then pour abouut 2" over the slab and add a 14-16" (half the height of the slab) step in the front of it. I know I will need some rebar support in the step because it will be about 6" high. I will drillin to the front of the slab to insert the re-bar. I will use weld crete on the old surface. I think I will watch your training video as well. I have never really worked with concrete but I am fairly comfortable with all kinds of renovations. I have been watching your videos for months knowing I have this project ahead of me. THANKS AGAIN!!

Hey Mike! just found your channel! I've got a 15x15 covered patio(slab) that I'm closing in and making into a sunroom and part of the house. As part of that, I'm opening up what it now the exterior doorway and making it larger so I'll have a transition from my den into the new sunroom. I'll need to pour @ 1.75 in onto the current patio slab to raise it up to the den level. My question is how do I make the transition between the two rooms?? I'm concerned it wont meet up properly.

    Wish you were in Oklahoma.
Do usually ask questions on YT but you obviously know what you're doing when it comes to concrete.
Had a guy pour a huge patio on a hot September day a couple of years ago. Really really bad job. Concrete was setting up inside the trucks. Ended up with dips and puddle areas all over - just looked like crap. To compound the problem had another guy sell me on a thin-coat of (???) so he could stain it - was gypped by that guy too. Now I not only have dips and puddle areas but also the surface is chipping up... Ugh!
    HELP PLEASE.
Thought about laying down 1/2-thick pavers, but after watching your video I'm think just three of inches of new concrete and having it stained.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.
Very informative video, straight and to the point.

Thanks for the great instructional videos! Wondering what the surface looks like with embedded fibers? I'm not too crazy about little bits coming to the surface and showy a "hairy" look. Is that what happens?

Great video Mike. I have a question. We have a very long sloped driveway (1200' roughly). It's an old farmer road with old concrete that is falling apart in places, but almost all of it is in rough shape. Can we pour over that, if we pour at least 3"? Would love your input.

I've been wanting to pour over the patio area. The edges are chipping and some areas had exposed rocks.. And also wanted to extend it to a line up with the porch..

Mike, Perfect time for me to see this video. I have a 6x6 thin metal shed on a 2 " think concrete slab that is in good shape. I want to make it a little bigger (6x8 or 8x10) with a 4" foundation, without removing the 6x6. The new shed will be wood. Can I do this if I use Weld Crete? Thanks for the video.

Great vid thanks. I'm about to build a wood fired outdoor oven that'll weigh (with base) around 4 tonnes. I'm building over my existing garage floor. I was going to add another 4" concrete layer to the existing with a water barrier between, and 12mm rebar. Do you think the finished floor will be ok to hold the weight? I think my existing garage floor is on sub base, then 4" concrete. So my finished oven foundation will be on 8" concrete. Thanks 👍

Thanks for your video: I have a small ramp to my shed that I poured, but the rain caught me and I didn't get a chance to finish and brush the surface. I had plastic over it but the plastic kind of fossilized and one of the bottom corners got wet. I only have about 2inch that I could raise by the door and I could go 3inches sloping down because it sunk in the middle. It cured and I can walk on it but the parts that got wet is showing the rocks.

You were enormously helpful, thank you. I have a 10 x 27 patio that is level with the dirt and the grass is constantly trying to grow over it. Additionally, the previous owners brought 10 feet of on end up, but never finished it. This has caused the newer concreat to break off in places. We want to remove the newer concrete and raise the whole pad by at least 3 inches. What is your take on that?
