How a vehicle molecular de-icer works

- These things are all over the usual online selling platforms at the moment, so I thought I'd buy some and explore their mechanism of operation.
It turns out that their mechanism basically involves deception and fraud, so these products are perfectly suited to selling platforms like eBay, Temu, Wish and AliExpress who facilitate the sale of such things.
In reality, the rogue sellers have reimagined just about every dashboard mounting device as the new "molecular microwave de-icer" to cash in on the non technically inclined who are desperate to avoid scraping ice off their windscreens in the morning.
These units do definitely have a molecular effect though. Mainly in the form of emitting chemical aroma molecules that may or may not be nice to breathe.
I'd guess that anyone trying to complain about these to the sellers will be fobbed off with delay tactics and a 50% refund offer as a last resort.

I think you're just using them wrong. You should actually fill them with ethanol and set them alight overnight: that will keep your windscreen defrosted permanently.
Just buy an electric car, they seem to set themselves alight!
just pour ethanol on your seat the night before. keeps ice from forming, makes the drive next morning way more entertaining and keeps you warm, especially if you are a smoker.

@@florianlucs7229 What's wrong with gasoline? Cars are supposed to run on gasoline (not gasonline, which would be interesting).
@@nicolassales8679 There are a lot of EVs in my area. Have yet to see a single fire related to one. But every week there is a new burned spot on the local highway from one of the old (or illegally modified, lots of low riders) gas vehicles burning.
Brilliant. Solar panes inside a snow covered car during the season of the year with the least amount of sun.
But they're supposed to fix that themselves!
you put it in there before the snow builds up
There's a sun built into them. Everyone knows that.

There is a device that will do that, and a bit of forraging in the Russian (or ex-USSR) arctic and remote areas might yield one for you. They make good gifts too.

The lineup consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzelvanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that sidefumbling was effectively prevented. I love the rephrasing of "heating" as molecular vibration to make it sound different and fancy.
The BEST de-icer I ever had was in an old Lincoln Continental. It had a copper laced windshield and had a very intricate system: Once the de-ice button was presses, the alternator switched from 12 to around 100-120V and running the engine off of the battery for the time it was on. The de-icing circuit was very complicated (for the time), and, if I remember it right with somehow using the copper layer on the glass to direct HF modulated current over the windshield. It thawed ice in SECONDS, I am not kidding you.
I still have the original shop manual for this car and there are MANY warnings what can harm you when you service the de-icing circuit.
That sounds like it would be one windshield sticker away from starting a fire.
The cars from the 80s had a similar thing, copper colored painted circuits on all the back windows. I miss those things. Wonder why nobody ever figured out how to make one that's practically invisible, or one that sticks on like window tint film? It's beyond doable, and would be infinitely more efficient than all that ductwork wandering around under, through and around the dashboard and doors. A million times more so with electric and hybrid vehicles too, and more reliable on top.
@@spacewater7, windshield heater seems like it would be ideal in the worst icy conditions. I have dreamed up most of the possible heater defrosters and most have some sort of drawback engineering is compromise. In the old days they had kerosene heaters and engine block heaters. In siberia saw landrover with special heater- cooling system but still couldnt beat the ice
@@spacewater7 They did work it out, it has been in Ford's (and other makes) windscreens for years (Lincoln being a Ford brand, thats what OP is talking about). I have a 20yr old Renault and the top model had this. The problem with it is that it can only be used once you get in the car, it also doesn't warm up the cabin, so the ducting is still needed, and its expensive, so they usually use the old copper paint on the back window and nothing on the sides.
I am not sure why the system would switch to a higher voltage, as that would surely give less current than simply blasting 12v through it, which is going to lead to a higher resistance, unless it was required for the thin wires (but I know that on my car model its just 12v, as you can hook it up if you get a heated screen fitted to one that didn't have it from factory).
@@spacewater7 There are nearly invisible heaters now. I was in a range rover evoque from ~2014 recently and it had heating element lines throughout the whole front windscreen that you couldn't really see unless you leaned very close to it.

Or, I've heard that anyway.
My friend’s grandmother was plain-spoken. She said, if you put perfume on without taking a shower first all you do is “sweeten the funk”. Same thing applies to car air fresheners. 😂
🤣😂😅😆🤩🤣
Like the old Lysol ads: "Now it smells of fish and roses!"
It should be noted that some "fresheners" contain a nasal anesthetic agent which will prevent you from smelling pretty much anything. From the 1980 Straight Dope archives by Cecil Adams: "In the old days the air-freshener folks used to make products in the last category using formaldehyde (or its solid version, paraformaldehyde), which, as you may know, is both poisonous and carcinogenic. In 1976, the Monsanto company came up with a somewhat less murderous nasal anesthetic (the precise formulation of which, needless to say, is secret), which has since been incorporated into some air-fresheners along with the usual masking fragrances."
I used to have a car ozone generator. It sort of reduced odors and added only a faint whiff of ozone.
" Sweeten the Funk" is a brilliant album name. Very retro 70s
Your voice at around the 30 second mark sounds so sincere that one of the vendors is definately going to steal it for their ads.

This is actually less of a snake-oil claim than it seems. Stirring the air in your home, making warm air that usually sits uselessly under the ceiling to circulate and provide its warmth to people below. Albeit I have my doubts how much something this small helps.
@@sharpfangno way this moved enough air to make any sort of demonstrable effect
@@bcc5701 It's not that clear. Very little air movement is needed to make a difference, the convection is very slow and so fighting it isn't hard at all. But first, these things being solar powered won't work indoors, and then - even if you manage to keep them powered - it's really 'on the fence', very little air movement needed but if *that* little is enough?

These are incredible. Not only do they stop ice forming, but the fill the tank or battery if you get the EV version, and empty the ash trays including the crumbs in the corners. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
These things are incredibly effective. I recently put one in my severely frosted freezer and went away for the weekend. Upon my return there was not a trace of frost. Coincidentally all my food had defrosted and the RCD on the fuse box had tripped but I put that down to an EMP produced by the immense power of this device 😂

I had a sudden flashback when I saw the deforestation device about those solid gel air fresheners in the 1970s that had an adjustable top to expose the gel to the preferred amount.
The old conical air fresheners make great trumpet mutes. They changed the shape and they don't work well now.

Once I thought I was being clever by taking the sponge block out of a California Scents tin and stuck it inside the vents on my Mazda 3. The solvents broke down the plastic in the vents and turned it to a soft sticky mess, it stayed that way for years.

It does pose an interesting question, how much heat, and for how long, to actually keep a car ice/frost free like in the adverts.
I used to keep a 2kW space heater in my car with an extension lead to the house and switch it on 10 minutes before leaving for work, that worked OK but I don't live in a particularly bad climate so only needed it 3 or 4 times a year.
Getting 2kW of heat from a hand size device will take some doing.
Wouldn't just starting the engine and feeding a hose from the exhaust in via a window be more energy efficient? Engine warmed up, vehicle de-iced and the interior all warm and fuzzy. 🤔😱🙄

@@theoztreecrasher2647 I believe that works, it certainly worked for a school friend of mine, he never had problems scrapping ice of windows ever again.
You'd need a lot less than that to keep it frost free - you'd only need to keep the glass slightly above freezing temperature. You only need 0.84 joules of energy to raise a gram of glass by 1 °C, but 334 joules to melt a gram of ice.
Unfortunately that's still beyond the capabilities of a small-solar powered air freshener.
I'd trust a 500 Watt heater left alone for a few hours more than a 2KW heater left alone for ten minutes. You can also do it by laying a blanket on the front and back windows. It's not entirely free: you'll still have to shake off and dry the blanket.
