Your Apollo console tutorials are simply the best I've found on youtube! Very well thought out and patient and straight to the point, really appreciate it!
The only tutorial so far that has been helpful! Thank you, Steve. You’ve just earned a new subscriber. This was through and well-spoken. I appreciate this a whole lot.
WOW! This was absolutely my FAV video yet! Console has always been over my head... but now I feel like I can keep up with the best of them! THANK YOU STEVE!
He could explain this to me a thousand times over.... it is STILL over my head. However, He went in great detail and I know it is going to help quite a few people out! And that’s very cool😎

I bought one of those (the Solo) a couple of weeks ago. I'm also fairly used to making and uploading youtube videos. In short, I had a need for this, and I appreciate the time and planning that went into making this educational and entertaining tutorial. Used all my YT accounts to sub this channel. A small price to pay ;-)
🤜🏻💪🏻💯 so glad to here it helped. The twin x is probably the nicest one in their lineup - in terms of some of the converters and tech specs. Super happy to hear that you’ve got a handle on it. You’re gonna make some killer sounds with it brotha! Cheers, Steve

Nice to see you here. I'm struggling to get pro tools to recognize apollo twin as an interface. I'm on the road over in Thailand trying to get a newly purchased compact studio up and running, so I'm going down the rabbit hole looking for answers. Looking forward to watching your video as there is always something new to be learned. All the best. Dave / dcb
@@TheSteveKinney You're very welcome. I heard you mention that you did mixing and mastering I'll send you an email about that. I have a few songs I'm working on.
Heck yeah! Love to see this kinda feedback. I’m glad I was able to help. I’ll certainly be putting out more pointers and videos soon. Stay tuned! -Steve
Hi Steve, i cannot thank you enough for the super simple way of showing the signal path through the channel strip and the subsequent 'crossroad' to either DAW or on to the effects inserts using the example of the UAD REC or UAD MON selection. I kind of jumped from the era of using a simple sound card (Focusrite Saffire) to Arrow and routing is not my cup of coffee. I'm a Logic Pro X user and I (and probably a ton of other viewers) would greatly appreciate if you could do a basic signal path / routing / plug-in usage video.... I've see most of them on YT already but your way of explaining makes it more digestable for me. My other question (or maybe it's just an extension of the first one) is how to take advantage of the best of both worlds in terms of effects - ie UAD's and Logic's plug-ins. To be more specific: let's say i want to simultaneously take advantage of UAD's built-in mic pre-amps and some guitar modeling inserts and some of Logic's plug-ins as well. How should I route the signal and set the monitoring? (i want to hear Logic's software monitoring so that i have a realtime sense of its plug-ins while playing). Don't know if i'm formulating the question correctly. anyway , massive thanks!
Great great questions! I can definitely do a video on this. To clarify, do you mean, make a video on some overall signal chains that are commonly used? For say, vocals? I got you on the second part of your question, and before I even make a video.... load up the Raw Pro Distortion pedal on a unison... Crank the volume, pull the Gain down to just above 0... have fun with the tone knob... and run it into the front of whatever amp sim you use on Logic.. thank me later. lol I'll make a video on using both setups soon, but I wanna make sure I understand your first part of your question. Thanks so much for the feedback! cheers, Steve
Good job bringing some clarity to signal paths. Easier to see in action in a video than trying to go back and forth between the manual and the software. Thanks.
@@TheSteveKinney Hey Steve thanks for the shout out... I just discovered your channel so I need to get caught up on what you already have and start getting some hands on practice. I love the Apollo platform just trying to get it worked into my Pro Tools flow. Thanks!
@@wilkiebrown244 right on man. I tell everyone it’s like having a ton of rack gear in a little unit. You can run it on the front side and track everything on the way through console ... or you can load the plugins in after the fact patchbay style. Either way, it all sounds analogue. And amazing. Great stuff dude. Cheers.
Lol it was like the first 3 videos where I didn’t have a lav. And then 2 videos where my camera was plugged in for power that interfered with the mic. I try to avoid problems with audio as much as I can - but the message it’s what’s important here. Cheers!

@@TheSteveKinney It's harder to listen to the "message" when seeing you have 19" outboard equipment visible in the camera but the sound of the video was bad. The juxtaposition between the two things just didn't add up. But well done on the mic change, your videos are a lot better because of it.
Thanks so much! 🙏🏻 I’ve got some more coming. It’s been tough - as I’ve been in the process of building a 10 song album. So the videos have been a little slow. But it’s all gonna pop soon.
Thank you Steve… that was real quick… not only are you amazing as a teacher but also humble… appreciate it… last question… between solo and RME Baby Face Pro FS which is bette?
They are super similar if you digest the technical specs in the manual. Both are great. RME is a little more windows OS friendly. The Apollo is technically the winner by a literal 1db of dynamic range. In other words - they are basically identical in quality. You’d never hear a difference between the two. Both are going to be outstanding. That said - kindly, if you do decide to roll on one or the other and you order from sweetwater, consider using one of my affiliate links to take you to the sweetwater website. It really will help the channel grow via partnership opportunities and I greatly appreciate any support!
Thanks Steve, I just started with US Apollo. It's a pity there's no way to intergrate the UA consol session set up into your DAW session so when you come back to the song months later you can pick up from where you left off rather than trying to remember what plugins you had on each interface.
Harold, thanks so much! Glad it came across clear. I try my best, and as I continue to do more videos, I hope to get even better. Is there anything you'd like to see me cover on the channel?
Awesome! Subscribed! Steve, I want to buy the Apollo Solo, but a lot of people say that it's not Good or WORTH if you don't have a Thunderbolt 3 Mac... That's why I want the Thunderbolt 3 version. The thing is that I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2012... but I may be able to upgrade to a newer Mac within 1 year or so, if everything goes well. So if I buy the Apollo THB3 version, would I be able to use it with my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro somehow?
Thanks SO much for the sub! That means so much. To answer your question in short, yes, there would technically be a way to do it. Although it would add some extra cost. You see, the device, technically would transmit data down an adapter cable, but the adapter cable doesn't provide enough power to bus power the device. SO. you'd need a thunderbolt 2 > thunderbolt 3 adapter, THEN you'd need some sort of powered thunderbolt 3 dock. then you could plug the solo into it. From what I understand, that would work. What I would recommend is that if you're thinking about upgrading - look into the 2018-2020 15" and 16" MacBook Pros - may be able to save some money that route. The new M1 Big Sur Macs are super weird, and a lot of software doesn't support it just yet. It's crazy powerful, yes, but intrusive into your privacy. So I'm not sold on them yet. Something to think about also - you might be able to pick up the Solo USB - used, as a starter setup. This would get you the sounds you'd like. Any plugins you buy now - would obviously transfer over to any upgrades. Then when you move up to a new machine, you could also eventually upgrade into a thunderbolt 3 device AND have the solo for travel setups, or resell it. Lowering the cost overall of your initial investment. Alternatively, you CAN use thunderbolt 2 Apollo's with thunderbolt 3 adapters. So, you may be able to find a cheaper used Apollo Twin. Not a bad route either. And remember, you can always resell too. Hopefully that helps narrow it down a bit more. Either way, whatever Apollo you go with - you won't be disappointed with the sounds that you can get from it. You HAVE to get one if you're serious about making some sounds! Cheers, Steve
The issue with Apolo solo ( Arrow), in the Cue outputs you have only control over Headphones and not Mon R and Mon L. So, that creates issues if you wanna reamp while choosing R or L , then you are obligated to use Headphones out put for reamping guitar or Bass.
@@TheSteveKinney Thank you for your answer. If I point Mon R or Mon L I will get the noise while reamping. The only option is to point HP as output. Have you tried reamping a guitar on this ?
@@TheSteveKinney it`s true. But if you try to reamp an electric Guitar you may understand what I m talking about. Reamping through headphones output gives always poor results compared to R and L. Moreover, with my example, it's not even possible with R and L, Maybe I1m right or MAybe I`m wrong and missing something.
Hey Steve, great vid, I love UA & the Apollo. I use an Apollo Twin Quad. I only have one issue using this with Pro Tools. If I use a UA plug in and I record one take on Pro Tools, I will not be able to edit that plug in once it is recorded.
What you’d need to do is make sure your plugins in console are in “mon” or monitor mode. That way you can hear the effects when you track - but you’re only passing the preamp signal to PT for processing later on. Hope that makes sense. Cheers mate!
@@TheSteveKinney true, but then I’d be using Avid plug ins 😜. I just purchased the Pro Tools | Carbon. Can’t wait. Looking forward to more of your videos.
thanks Sarah! Just using the Sony a7 iii. I believe on this video I was using the sigma 35mm art lens. I could be wrong. I know I also use a rokinon 24mm 2.8 as well. At the time. I also didn’t use s-log. Which probably might have actually helped. 🤔 maybe I’ll start using that again. Anyways. Thanks for watching! -Steve
Great tutorial. Straight to the point. Got one question - I noticed when using certain plugins (ie: Pultec output knob) , that don’t have db values on the UI, when adjusting these knobs, I don’t see no db values. Is this normal? I know in other Daws , you can see the increments as you adjust each knob. But in console I don’t. What you think? Thanks.
Yeah - console doesn’t show you with that one, so that’s normal. I usually use my eyes and ears anyways, I’ll use my eyes on the meters in console, and I’ll use my ears for gain staging. But all of this is normal. Cheers mate! 😎👍🏻
Nice video, Steve - question for you - I'm using Pro Tools, and sometimes I need to use plugins that are not UAD plugins (such as STL Tones for guitar). In that case, I HAVE to use the input on Pro Tools with that plugin. However, we're supposed to turn on Low Latency Monitoring on Pro Tools when using the UAD console. But, in doing that then there's enough delay to make you want to throw your system out the window (depending upon channel load, of course). But I can't help but thinking that there's GOTTA be a way to somehow ROUTE it through to virtual channels (perhaps?) to still get the plugin from ProTools input channel, while enjoying the "latency free"-ness of the Apollo.. have you ever done this?
Thank you Steve! I am coming from the RME world. How do I change the volume of the Entire Cue Mix 1 or 2 from the Console App and Mute the entire cue it if required? Thank you :)
to mute the entire cue, click and drag on the word mute across all channels. to grab all the faders and bring them up or down together hold command and then click on cue the fader
How can I add an Headphone Amp in the circuit/signal flow? I use the HDV 820 headphone amp. I have the Apollo x8. So from my Macbook via thunderbolt 3 to my uad apollo x8. From my Line out 1 and Line out 2 of the apollo x8, I go to the inputs L/R of my HDV 820 headphone amp. I use FL Studio as my DAW. And do i have to change something in the UAD Console software when adding a headphone amp in the chain?
Really good. Thanks for the video. Not sure j fully captured the best way to print any Aux (like reverbs) into the DAW. Whenever I record into daw it ignores the AUX. Any more info into that is appreciated
Thanks so much for the comment! 🙏🏻 So to clarify - all you need to do if you wanna record the effects on the aux channel from console: 1. Know which “inputs” the aux channel is by going to the I/O matrix in UAD console settings. It’s device specific. So I can’t just say what it is. 2. Add a stereo audio track in your DAW - choose the Aux bus as an input. Typically it’s higher numbers. If your on a solo it’s inputs 7-8 or something to that effect. 3. Make sure the effects are “wet solo’d”. Hit record. Let me know if you need any help! Cheers brotha!
Great video, I'm looking forward to watching others you have made! I feel good about using the console when I'm tracking, but is there an easy way to add things like an LA-2 to an existing track? Using Studio One. Thanks!
Hey Angelina, thanks so much for the kind words and the support! Console does work with Windows, but to clarify it's specifically only used to control and interact with your UAD Apollo interface. It's used to load plugins and mic pre emulations onto your signal chain before it hits your DAW for recording. Hope that makes sense. Best, Steve
@@TheSteveKinney Great! Thanks for responding so quickly. I really want to be able to save recording chains for recording that I can recall quickly. I use Cubase Pro 11 and a RME fireface ufx interface but just can't seem to get the sound I want when recording. It comes out brittle and harsh but clean. I really want to get a great clean and warm tone from the get go for acoustic and electric guitar, vocals, and bass if possible. I am thinking this interface would do the job and also sound great. Do you have any video/samples of the sound quality? Any who when I buy this I want to purchase your presets pack. Have a great night and nice to meet you.
@@angelinagargano3940 hey yeah! Means a lot that you’d support the channel that way, so thank you for keeping me in mind! So check out my video on building a song from scratch in Luna. It’s a three part series. And is what the console classics packs were built around. Which was also built with the Apollo solo. Might I ask, what microphones are you using? That always has a big impact on the sound for sure. While the Apollo and its mic pres will give great character and tone to any mic - sometimes the mic is what needs to be changed the most. Tell me about your signal chain and I’ll do my best to think it through with some pointers. Thank Angelina! Cheers.
@@TheSteveKinney Awesome! Well l use a KSM 44 pluged into the RME fireface with a little compression, eq with low end roll off below 200, a little bit of reverb, I sing about 8 to 12 inches of the mic with a pop filter and vocal sheild. And sometimes I use a SM58. My studio has sound proofing. Thanks for your help...I loved your tracking videos in Luna. I have watched the first 2 of 3 so far. Have a great day.
@@angelinagargano3940 Hey there, that's a great mic! If you're room you're recording in is treated nicely and is quite dead in terms of reverb, I'd make sure your shield is a bit further off the mic to make sure you don't get standing waves. I'd also sing at about 4-6" off. Use the High pass filter of the mic. As far as processing - it might be where you're signal is too clean - This is where the UA stuff comes into play. The emulations of the famous mic pre's can get you a bit of drive and character into the signal. Reverb's are all a choice. But a nice one always helps. Overall - doesn't sound like you're doing any thing that particularly needs to be changed. All I can tell you is that a lot of your warmth really comes from that area of 200 herts.. which is also where the muddiness can come from - so maybe be a bit gentler with roll off in terms of the "q" or the slope of the roll off. that might help quite a bit. Then also - try de-essing to taste as that can tame that high end "sharpness" that makes something not feel warm. Hope this all makes sense, I checked out your channel and I think you're doing a great job! Keep it up. Cheers.
Thanks for another useful video! One area that I'm still trying to sort out, is the role of inserts on the Console vs within LUNA. If I want to burn the effect to the audio track in LUNA, then it seems it must go on the Console and using UAD Rec. However, if I UAD Mon maybe it technically makes no difference if the insert is in the Console or LUNA??? If that is accurate, then what would be the guiding choices, workflow framework, etc that would let me know where it makes sense to put that insert. And, maybe certain types of plugins make more sense on a Console vs the DAW side? And, maybe I’m missing a big piece of the puzzle?
Truthfully - console is kind of always working in the background with Luna. And when going UAD mon vs rec - within Luna, rather than having Console open, where you place the plugin is what is gonna determine what “mode” you’re in. So if you place the plugin at the top where the Rec FX label is then it will be printed. Visually speaking the first four slots in console are representing that to be the case, if you have the app open. If you just wanna be in Mon mode, then place the plugin in the insert of the track in the Luna mixer. Hopefully that makes sense. As far as workflow, not a lots changed as far as decision making. Still always the thought process of, what am I cool with baking into the signal. 😎 Cheers brotha!
Yeah, absolutely. That's kind of tricky topic that can get confusing. In short, you want your signals to kind of average around -18dB to -12dB. and your peaks shouldn't be peaking above -6dB every single time. It's alright to have one or two random ones higher. And of course, if you clip your signal, gotta turn that bad boy down. But how you get there is where the magic starts to happen. A lot of creative choice can go into that. For example, it might be a creative choice to have the mic pre clipping, but the signal in that sweet spot. I'd be happy to make a video on it. Hopefully, that gives you some insight in the meantime. Cheers!
Hey Steve is there a way to use the presets I purchased from you for console along with Studio One . I like the way my vocals sound in studio one . They sound a little smoother right off the bat than they do in LUNA. I'll probably use both but I would like to to have the option. I bought a faderport and it came with Studio One . Pretty nice DAW.
Hey Steve I am a voice over artist just love your content… great work… keep it coming… do you think solo is good enough for voice over recording or should I go for the twin
The solo is easily enough. It might even be a little “too” much. For voice over stuff, you really just need a great preamp, great ad/da converters a good mic or two depending on what the work calls for. All of which the solo is - but it’s also got all the music plugins and emulations that you will probably not really ever use. It’s like getting a farrari. It’s awesome, but unless you take it to a track to race, you don’t ever really get to open it up. Either way, it’s a great device!
thank you so much for this video. I'm about to buy an Apollo solo. With my band we play live sometimes and I would like to know if it is possible to create a mix for the drummer. Is it possible to create different mixes for the headphones out and outputs? I would like to send a metronome just for the drummer and a mix without for the crowd
Hi steve, is the apollo solo enough if im just recording vocals. (Home studio ) prob gonna be mixing with Waves Plugins anyways. Thinkin of using uad just to get a great clean sounding vocal .. want to upgrade from a focusrite. But leaning more to a UAD apollo twin X DUO. But the solo doesnt seem bad. Let me know your vibe on this. ( thanks)
Yeah, the solo would certainly be a great option. No issues with running any of the unison preamp plugins. And you can have processing on top of that too. If you have any outboard gear that you’re trying to incorporate, the twin might be a better route because of the extra stereo outs that you could use to loop sounds. Either one will work real well for just vocals or a single channel.
@@TheSteveKinney thanks for the reply Steve. Just using it for a mic. No guitar or anything else. Plus prob noob question : Does the Unison preamp slot take up the Solo dsp? Or is the solo DSP usage only when u use the Inserts section?
@@AmritDasu that’s actually a great question. Dsp is used anytime a UAD plug-in is loaded. So if you run a Neve 1073, whether that be on the unison mic pre, insert slot, or in your daw, it would be using dsp.
Thanks so much for commenting with a great question! I've confirmed with UA themselves that this does in fact work. I have yet to do it myself - however, I plan to do so in the future for sure (I have to make a hole in one of my rack blanks to route the additional cable run, which I've been putting off lol) Anyways - thanks so much and be sure to subscribe for more, a lot of cool stuff this year planned. All the best, Steve
Great video, Steve, really enjoyable and informative to a fairly new Apollo Twin user like me...really like your patient, stepwise approach (along with your pro tips). One query for you if I may...I'm plugging my Kemper into the Apollo Twin via the spdif connections, and though I can succesfully hear/monitor the signal coming through from my Kemper (and see the spdif channel registering on the console), I can't find how to get this spdif channel to register/record in my Garageband (which works fine with my Line 1, Line 2 inputs from the Twin)....I'm clearly missing a simple setting change, but can't figure it out. Any suggestions from you would be much appreciated.
What is frustrating with Apollo is suppose one has a Marshall amp in Input 1 with a Stereo delay as an insert that you want to print during record. It sounds fine as a Stereo image in the Monitor mode, but in Rec mode the DAW only records a single Mono or Stereo Left track without a stereo image. Is there a way to change that? Excellent video and snappy pace with lots of good information. Thanks.
Yes, technically you could. There are ultimately two ways to do this. The simpler way is to have some sort of headphone, or signal distribution device. Where it would essentially take the output out the back and split it into two sends. This way, one could be sent to a headphone amp, and then the other could go to a speakers amp. While you build the headphone mix that comes out of the backside outputs, you'd have to understand that it would also go to your main output for the time being. and if you need to mute the monitors, you would have to mute it at the monitors amp, rather than from the Apollo, since this would also mute that headphone signal. Then from there, the other headphone output on the front could act as normal. It is KEY, to understand that you'd have to figure out how to build "alternate" mixes in your DAW, so that you could recall the headphone mix. An easy way to do this is build the mix via prefacer bus sends, and then use the Bus as the source for the mix. For the master bus at this point, you'd have to Mute it! That way you don't duplicate signals being sent to that primary output. Then you'd build this similar bus mix for the other headphone output. Add a bus, build the mix prefader. THEN when you're ready to actually mix- Mute the bus sends, and then Unmute the master bus so you head the actual mix. Much simpler to understand once you get the hang of it. But definitely possible and feasible. thanks for the comment! Cheers mate!
Hi Steve! Congratulations on your videos, accurate and important! I am a voice actor and therefore record spoken word. I am planning to get a UNIVERSAL AUDIO Apollo Solo TB3 | Heritage Edition. Do you recommend it? What good microphone would you recommend? My voice is very baritone. Thanks a lot!
Most of what the Apollo’s offer, and a lot of their price is wrapped up with the plugins that they bundle with it. While you’d likely want to use some of them for voice over, most wouldn’t be necessary. You could likely find an Apollo solo used and then wait for a sale and get a few specific plugins that might be helpful. Definitely will want fab filter. Definitely will want some sort of de-esser. For the radio sound, you’ll want either an sm7b or re-20 And then for the studio voice over sound you could go with a number of different mics. Too many to list.
Hey I’m have issues with setting my audio up to hear playback from my Daw to my headphones it’s completely silent and I’ve tried looking it up on TH-cam and finding out how to make a output to my headphones and not monitors on the console of my Apollo twin x can you make a video on how to do that or message me on this because it’s audio signal but no noise coming from HP AT ALL
Go to UAD console settings > find console I/O matrix Find what channel number your headphone output is listed as. Create a bus output in your daw and match the output to the matching channel number. That should do it.
Fantastic question. Technically, TB2 has the bandwidth to support it, but cannot provide the bus power to power the thunderbolt version. So maybe look into a used twin x. Might make up the price difference.
This was a fantastic video! Subscribed. Just started a home studio for first time and lot to learn. This really helped with the Apollo and getting a good handle on some of the console functions. Just one question….is it best to add the mic pre plug in at the top of the channel as opposed to an insert? I like the idea of keeping the reverbs and delays in the aux channel and printing other things to the daw. Just unsure of whether to put a mic pre plug in in the insert area or at the top. Disclaimer…I’m also new to recording lol. Picked up enough from being in an actual studio to be slightly dangerous to myself.
Haha I feel you on the slightly dangerous part! That’s how most of us all get started, then the rabbit hole begins! Cheers to starting your home production space and thanks for the kind words! In reference to your question - with Apollo stuff - it’s usually best - especially if your mic’ing your source - to use the mic pre in the Unison slot. (The top slot) This enables the hardware inside the Apollo - physically change its impedance and gain structure that feeding the mic. So now your mic actually changes it’s response, making your signal really feel and sound like it’s going through a Neve or SSL. Amazing stuff. Now SOME situations it’s better to put the mic pre plugin in the insert slot - for example using a guitar amp plugin and just wanting the breakup from an SSL console. In this case - if you put the mic pre plugin on first - then you’d be sending the sound of a guitar playing into an ssl console into an amp sim. Not exactly the effect you’d wanna go for in that instance, so of course you’d put the mic pre plug after the fact. (I’m working on a video on this as we speak) Hopefully that clarifies it for ya brotha! Thanks for subscribing! Cheers, Steve
Very useful video! My question: is the dsp power of the solo enough to record vocals with a preamp, compressor, autotune and reverb? I just wanna have the latency free recording when I track vocals and I would do the mixing with logic plugins.
Hey There! Thanks so much for your comment! This got me curious since I don't have autotune, and use Melodyne. I got the trial versions of all three UAD autotunes available to try out different combinations. What I've found is that it is heavily dependent on what type of Preamp & Reverb you're using. Neve pre's are really resource hungry, so are reverbs. However, I was able to build a nice chain. Neve 1084, Autotune, La-2A Silver, PurePlate verb. I also was able to do the Glaxy tape echo which has a cool spring reverb sound in it. What I also found was that if I used the "legacy" compressors - I could save some extra resource to utilize different verbs like the Lexicon 224. Finally, other pre's like the API vision channel strip, or the V76 - worked like a charm since they are less DSP heavy. They also sound great! Especially for vocals. The API has the added benefit of having compression built into it. So you're saving there too if you'd like. This is similar to the SSL 4000, or the Century Tube Channel Strip. Pretty cool man! What won't work is the Capitol chambers. That damn thing is as heavy as Jabba the hut. Cheers man!
Thanks so much for the comment! And a great question! Luna comes with all THUNDERBOLT Apollo’s. And it’s currently only available for Mac. So it’s quite specific at this point. Best, Steve
I've a little issue: I can't assign the output 5/6 on my apollo x6 as output. They don't show as "alt count" in the hardware section of the io/matrix... I can see just the 2 different alternative outputs instead of 3. Do you know how can I solve this? Thank You!
I don't understand why my setup doesn't give me this kind of volume? I use a Fender Precision Bass straight into my Apollo Twin mkII HI-Z input, and I get a pretty quiet sound until I turn it up too much that it becomes hissy. When I engage a plug-in, I basically hear nothing. My headphones are turned up, same if I were to monitor through my monitors. There has to be something either wrong with my bass, or I've messed something up in the Apollo Twin or Console. Any insight?
Hey there! Keep in mind - there is weird difference in volume between TH-cam and what you hear on your desktop. And also - always double check your cables - could be an input issue with your bass - but could also just be the cable. Does music and sounds from Spotify play back properly and loudly?
Hey Steve, thanks for the informative walkthrough! I have a question for you. Are you able to use your Apollo Solo as a monitor controller within console when daisy chained with your Apollo rack? I heard that you cannot use the Apollo solo as a monitor controller when daisy chained and I hope it is possible after all.
Yeah - I’ve used it as my controller - there is no alt button tho - so you couldn’t use the talkback without reaching for the rack unit. Unless you had one of those foot switch things where you just set up a mic. Monitor control worked the last time I checked. And the whole thing works when daisy chained. Nifty.
@@TheSteveKinney You're the man! Thank you so much for the speedy feedback. I ordered a solo today solely as a monitor controller for my two X6 apollos so this is music to my ears brother. Thank you tons!
@@SterlingBauerMusic yeah - you should be fine - I think you have to do some sort of identifying and routing configuration in console I/o but it’s straight forward from what I can remember.
So what exactly is the diffrence between loading something via insert and loading via unison? I have been strictly using preamps there, the marshall amp seems interesting.
Unison Enabled Plugins (Listed on UA's website), when loaded in that slot - are directly interacting with the HARDware, of your interface. Specifically with regard to your Mic Preamps, when using the Neve preamp plugins for example - the hardwares Impedance changes to match what the modeled hardware would have been. This is the same for the Marshall amp for example, the Hi-Z input's impedance now switches specifically to what the Marshall Amps impedance would be.. .this changes the physical resistance of electricity of your Mic or Guitar, etc. Now the guitar or mic is essentially reacting the same way it would be as if it were plugged into the real hardware.... and then of course, the Preamp's Gain Stages themselves have been modeled too. So as you gain up the plugin, the gain is changing and reacting accurately as well. This is a million times more accurate than say using a Focusrite interface and dropping a Plugin in post. I equate it to using an iPhone camera and then using their background blur feature vs using a real camera with a real shallow depth of field. While the software in and of itself is believable - doesn't come close to the feel of real hardware or the nuance a real lens.... Hopefully that made sense! Cheers!
Thanks for doing these videos. I have an Apollo 4x and I'm tracking drums (Glyn Johns style) through Console to LogicPro. Since it's just me, I was wondering if there's a way to record the 4 drums tracks and then listen back but change the UA preamps so I can compare and/or change the default settings on the pre's? I'm still in demo mode trying to decide which UA plug-ins to buy. Currently, I'm using the Logic phone app to start and stop recording while at the kit and then changing the pre's before I record again then listening to all of the takes. That however doesn't allow for tweaking the defaults to see what sounds best. I'm sure this is rudimentary stuff but that's where I am. Thanks for any info.
That’s a great question! I think there isn’t really all too much of a work around here. If it were me, to really A/B the different mics - what I’d do in that scenario is set up a simple groove with a simple fill - and play it to a click for 4 measures. Record the different passes for all the different mic pres you’re choosing from and then create a comp at the start of every new measure so when you hit play - It swaps out in real time as you’re listening. I’d say you’d just have to also include tweaks as you go and as you’d like. Outside of just old school going back any forth. That said - there is an iPad app that allows you to mirror and control your computer wirelessly with touch settings. Might be able to play around on the fly with that. Just a thought. Hope this helps, cheers!
This video was highly informative and helpful, thank you Steve. I have a question I was hoping you could answer. Adjusting the main knob on my Apollo Solo when set to HEADPHONE does NOT accordingly adjust the volume in console (like it does for you). The green dot adjacent to 'MONITOR' does turn on/ off however when I increase/ decrease the volume in console (when set to HEADPHONE) nothing happens. I emailed UAD support and they said it's normal and likely a safety feature to avoid sending high SPL's to headphones with an accidental flick of a wrist. I'm a bit confused as the feature would seem useful. Any ideas? Would highly appreciate your response. Thanks again!!
Hey dude! Thanks so much for the kind words. So when you’re Apollo is highlighting “monitor” it will adjust the volume of your main outputs. When it’s highlighting headphones - it will only control the volume of the signal being sent to the headphones only. This is a feature, not a bug. They are two different things and thus should have two different controls. Hope that makes sense. The GUI in console doesn’t change when you change the headphone volume either. It’s only represented on the Apollo device itself. -Steve
hey just bought apollo solo usb and iam having trouble with hearing clean guitar through my monitors when using tonehub ..i should only be hearing distorted guitars but hearing both what the problem ????
Open UAD console and mute your signal. You’re likely hearing the direct guitar sound from the Apollo monitoring. If you’re ever monitoring through software - like amp sims in the box - since the audio has to pass through the computer first - Apollo’s monitor signal will always need to be muted. This is normal. Hope this makes sense 😎 cheers brotha!
I have my main monitors hooked up, but I want to add a mono speaker too. I have it plugged into line out 1, and changed alt count to 1 in the settings of console. The mono speaker works this way, and I can switch between the two types of monitors with a push of a button on the unit. However as the mono speaker is only plugged into one of the line outs, its only receiving one side of the audio. Can I route the outputs somehow to get a mono signal?
Interesting question. I’m sure there is - I’d say the answer would likely be within the I/o matrix. However- when you go to mono - it’s sharing the signal equally across left and right channels - the only difference that I could imagine is that maybe it just wouldn’t be as loud. Could be wrong there though.
Why does the "Clip" input monitoring appear to pick up more than just the input signal? It seems like Console adds the playback from my DAW to the clip level when I am recording. So it tells me my input signal is clipping when it isn't. Seems like a basic thing I can't figure out, and would appreciate any feedback on the issue. Thanks.
Highly likely that you have UAD Monitor turned on - if you have UAD Rec enabled - the signal you see in console should be the exact one that hits your DAW. Cheers brotha!
Absolutely! You’d wanna add an instance of a UAD plugin inside your daw like you normally would with any other plugin. If you wanna save dsp, To print those you have to bounce the track, or commit the track to audio. Most DAWs have this function. I have a brief example of this in logic in another video on how to save dsp. Great question! And thanks for the comment!
Have a question. I want to have my mic recorded on OBS twice. 1 channel will be wet and 1 dry. Does Console have the ability to output to different virtual outputs so I'm able to select them seperarely on OBS?
@TheSteveKinney i want to have console do all the compressor effects and get that sent out to a virtual output(wet). Then have the same signal, with no effects, sent to a second virtual output (dry)
@@joserabagojr right .. understood that / but I don’t understand why or for what reason you’d do this with the signals hard panned at the same time .. Sometimes understanding the why will help me understand how to accomplish said thing. I’m pretty sure you could do this, but I think you’d need to utilize an aux channel in addition to a virtual channel.
I stream on Twitch and on OBS, you can assign each audio input caputre to a channel. So usually i'd have Channel 1 for master mix, 2 for dry mic mix, 3 wet mix (using Voiecmeter), 4 Game Audio, 5 Music, 6 Extra. And so when I take the video files into Adobe Premeire, all tracks are recorded all at once. But for my stream, I'd only use the Master Mix composed of the wet mic mix, game audio and music only. You think its possible?@@TheSteveKinney
@@Only1Science OHHH. Dude, you can TOTALLY cascade with the solo. Add it to your x6, it will work. It just doesn’t have the alt buttons. But the monitor mute function should work no issues. Cheers!
@@TheSteveKinney Thanks man! I actually need the Mon/Alt switcher because it's a far reach. I have a D-Command in front of me (PTHD10 Rig). LOL My secondary rig is a custom-built WIN10 PC with TB to run the x6. I also have a UAD Quad PCI-e, so DSP is no issue. I think I might just get a X series Apollo Twin. I have a Presonus Monitor Station, but it degrades sound IMO. I'd rather go direct to monitors.
@@Only1Science keep in mind - that now Apollo twin x’s are starting to pop up used now and you might be able to find one for the price of a new solo. Although - you wouldn’t get any new special plugin offers but 🤷🏻♂️ might still be a good way to go. Cheers mate!
Let's say i need to record someone, he wants to hear more of his voice (with effects), and less of the music, can i do this in the console, if so, how ?
Yes you can, very simply put... you need to turn up the physical headphone send, and then in your daw just turn down the master fader. simple. easy. effective. to the point. All your doing there is changing the relationship of the playback audio to live signal. hope this makes sense, cheers!
Thanks for your video. I need some further assistance. I need to EQ my recording AFTER I record with this preamp like I see you do. I reached out to UA and the info they gave me did not necessarily help me. I would really appreciate your help on this please. Thanks in advance,
Happy to help... Can you give me just a little more info on your situation? Or an example of what you’re trying to do to? Whatever you do - you’d have to do it within your daw.
@@goldenlightchild4861 okay. Coolio. So you need to add a plugin inside of ableton on the track that is in “focus”.. so the track you just recorded. To clarify - you wouldn’t be using UAD console at this point. And you’d wanna add the 1084 in this instance.

Crank the volume, pull the Gain down to just above 0... have fun with the tone knob... and run it into the front of whatever amp sim you use on Logic.. thank me later. lol
I'll make a video on using both setups soon, but I wanna make sure I understand your first part of your question.
Thanks so much for the feedback!
cheers,
Steve
Thanks for the convo learned a lot 😊

They are super similar if you digest the technical specs in the manual.
Both are great. RME is a little more windows OS friendly.
The Apollo is technically the winner by a literal 1db of dynamic range. In other words - they are basically identical in quality. You’d never hear a difference between the two.

Thanks Steve, I just started with US Apollo. It's a pity there's no way to intergrate the UA consol session set up into your DAW session so when you come back to the song months later you can pick up from where you left off rather than trying to remember what plugins you had on each interface.
This is exactly what Luna is aiming (and does) to do.
It’s literally built off of console. The GUI looks almost the same with a few more tweaks etc.
Hi Steve you explained it in a very easy way good job, subscribed...(apollo twin x duo)

Awesome!
Cheers,
Steve
@@TheSteveKinney You're just... Amazing. Thank You, Steve. Really. You'll be HUGE.

Thanks so much for the comment! 🙏🏻
So to clarify - all you need to do if you wanna record the effects on the aux channel from console:

Cheers brotha!
Can U do a video on using separate speakers on Apollo Quad Thanks
This is an awesome idea! Simple topic, but another one that you don’t see a lot of info on.
Good call.
can you make a video on how much db u should record with for best headroom! on the solo/controll?

My usb 3.1 type A to type C is on the way. I hope it will work.
Definitely let me know how it goes!
Yup.
You can send a cue mix to the headphones and a main mix to main outs left and right.
@@TheSteveKinney thank you a lot, I'll buy one
Plus prob noob question :
Does the Unison preamp slot take up the Solo dsp? Or is the solo DSP usage only when u use the Inserts section?
@@AmritDasu that’s actually a great question.
Dsp is used anytime a UAD plug-in is loaded.
So if you run a Neve 1073, whether that be on the unison mic pre, insert slot, or in your daw, it would be using dsp.

Go to console settings and locate the I/O matrix.
Then find the numbers associated with the spdif inputs. :)

Thanks.
Yup!
You’d wanna set up a send to an aux channel -and then have that signal 100% wet.
And then record the aux channel in addition to channel one.
@@TheSteveKinney Thanks !
can you use the rear output on the solo as a second headphone mix using headphone amps? One headphone for a vocalist and the other for the producer.
For the radio sound, you’ll want either an sm7b or re-20
And then for the studio voice over sound you could go with a number of different mics. Too many to list.

Go to UAD console settings > find console I/O matrix
Find what channel number your headphone output is listed as.
Create a bus output in your daw and match the output to the matching channel number.
That should do it.
Okay I’m still confused
i have macbook late 2013 15" this will work with my thunderbolt 2?
(The top slot)
This enables the hardware inside the Apollo - physically change its impedance and gain structure that feeding the mic.
(I’m working on a video on this as we speak)
Hopefully that clarifies it for ya brotha! Thanks for subscribing!
Cheers,
Steve
@@TheSteveKinney got it! Again thank you
Very useful video!
Cheers man!
Great video, does it comes with Luna?
Thanks so much for the comment! And a great question!
Luna comes with all THUNDERBOLT Apollo’s. And it’s currently only available for Mac.
So it’s quite specific at this point.
Best,
Steve
I've a little issue: I can't assign the output 5/6 on my apollo x6 as output. They don't show as "alt count" in the hardware section of the io/matrix... I can see just the 2 different alternative outputs instead of 3. Do you know how can I solve this? Thank You!
Are they “isolated”?
And what are outputs 5/6 listed as by default?
Hey Steve,
thanks for the informative walkthrough!

This Is My Dream ❤️

Can you monitor a x6 or x8 units rack with the solo or arrow ?
@@1eidji652 yes.
So it’s possible if I’d record then after recording let’s say my vocals I could add the plugins I want in the console
Yeah - you’d add the plugins in your daw at that point. If you’re manipulating after the fact.
hey just bought apollo solo usb and iam having trouble with hearing clean guitar through my monitors when using tonehub ..i should only be hearing distorted guitars but hearing both what the problem ????
Open UAD console and mute your signal.
You’re likely hearing the direct guitar sound from the Apollo monitoring.
If you’re ever monitoring through software - like amp sims in the box - since the audio has to pass through the computer first - Apollo’s monitor signal will always need to be muted.
This is normal. Hope this makes sense 😎 cheers brotha!
Thank you🎉
I have my main monitors hooked up, but I want to add a mono speaker too.
Can I use the plugins as post processing?
Eh.... can you share the use case?
Obs can do a lot, but it’s entirely dictated by what consoles I/o matrix is set up to communicate.
