    Ahhh I wish this came out a few days ago my audition was yesterday. I didn’t make it and I’m a senior. But I know getting in isn’t a measure of capabilities and musicianship. I thank you for anything I’ve learned from you nonetheless. I could’ve caught judges on a bad mood or a streak of bad playing people and I didn’t sounds as good a constant sound of good playing people, but hopefully I can get this thought of maybe being not worth county auditions in college auditions. :)

      Neill Moscoso Ah man :/ I’m sorry about that. I really wanted to post sooner but the semester destroyed me. I think these tips are still very useful for college auditions if you plan on it! Nevertheless, thanks for being a great long-time viewer!

      Phil Balint yup I’m from eht congrats on first chair my dude I really wanna see my score sheets because my teacher said I was like a few points away from last chair symphonic but after listening to this video I never realized speed is preferred over dynamics on scales because I love playing with dynamics and swells 😂

      Definitely don't let those audition results get you down! I didn't make it into all-state bands at ALL during middle/high school and got really depressed about audition results every year but once you get to college you'll realize that none of that stuff really matters anymore :) just keep your head up and good luck on auditions next year!

    • @mccplayzmc7113
      @mccplayzmc7113 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      bari is so much fun in regions because of that rare chance you get a solo. i made 1st last year as an 8th grader and the saxophones (4 of us total, because it was the higher band) had a solo. but i was the only one who could be heard and the conductor loved it. i didn't audition this year because i hate my highschool's band teacher so much that i refuse to do concert band, so... anyways have fun

    This is really helpful for any musician, some of the embouchure stuff doesn’t really apply to percussion, but really helpful even for brass and double reeds. Although it’s impossible to keep consistent tone with pedal tones on brass, because it the sound is produced in a different way.

    I made 1st chair district of a fairly laid-back audition. Only had to do 2 etudes, chromatic full range scale, and a 1 octave E major scale. This is kansas. I'll for sure implement your tips that I am not using, or rather just emphasize them more to make for an appealing all-state audition. Also, I'm ready for that D. Pollack vid!

    Great video with great advice! I love how you mentioned that a lot of the expression is implied or basically that a musician needs to interpret that. That really is what makes music an art - being able to create what you see as appropriate to express a message using sound 🙂

    You're offering high quality advice along with demonstrations on how to locate and fix bad habits, efficient way to work on scales, what they are and all... More so than a high percentage of sax players on YT with funny accents that bore you out your mind. Now I can work on scales better focused so thanks for the video..Just wish you'd balance out all the playfulness a bit. Gets distracting.

    Do you have a technique for nerves? I feel like they’re a big part of preforming in any competition regarding live judges

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Henburger Nerves never really go away. But, the best way to suppress nerves is to be as prepared as you can. The more prepared you feel, the more you feel a confidence, rather than nervousness. Also, eat a few bananas the morning of your audition. Something about the potassium supposedly helps your brain keep focus when you’re nervous. And last but not least, do a practice audition for your friends or family multiple times before the real audition. To me, auditioning for my brother or mom is far more nerve-wracking than auditioning for some stranger judge I’ll probably never see again.

    For overtones my reed closes off with the mouthpiece if I try to get the fourth and up overtones for a low Bb. Do you know what the problem could be?

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      saxophone lover Are your reeds too thin? The thinner the reed, the harder to pull off overtones and altissimo.

    can you give me a small description of how to use a tuning drone & tuning drone exercises? I would wait for the upcoming video, but we both know that might take a bit

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coderedpirate yeah we both know LOL.
      If you use the tuning drone by Richard Schwartz, practice all of your scales slowly, getting rid of waves in each scale degree. You can tune every tone, even minor seconds and major sevenths and tritones.
      It’s a hell of a listening exercise, but man it really strengthens your ear to play in tune with anyone and anything.

    This question ain't about this video but when you transcribe licks how do you know what chords you can play it over if you don't know the chord progression

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quisick there are a lot of clues the line gives! does it outline a chord? What are the down beats? What notes do the non-diatonic notes lead into? Etc. I can make a video more in depth about this!

    I am a sophomore and have tried out twice but have not made it yet because of a junior the last couple years, he plays extremely fast and hardly ever messes up. Do you have any tips on how to beat him next year?

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      John R Rather than thinking of how to take someone down, think of how to bring yourself up. If he is really good, it is something that is respectable and worth admiring! Your best bet is to start preparing as early as possible, and be very consistent. Sightread everyday! Learn every practice session, too. Always have a productive time!!

    Interesting to play the scales with vibrato. Not a bad thing, but interesting. I've always had my teachers refuse to allow vibrato on scales.

    hey saxlogic do you have any suggestions for if you can’t find a recording like anywhere? also fun fact i’ve been in the last room you recorded in

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not Kyle Phillips Often you get music like that. First I would look up recording of the composer’s other music that I can find, just to get a feel for his style. Then I would play through the piece of his to get a feel for the harmonies and musical lines. Then I would use musical intelligence to try and depict what the composer’s goal was when coming the piece, and try to bring it to life.
