- Metro Los Angeles was rocked by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake on Monday, which was seen on numerous surveillance cameras. KTLA 5 team coverage. Aug. 12, 2024.
KTLA 5 News - Keeping Southern Californians informed since 1947.
If that 4.4 felt like a 6.0 I don't wanna feel what a 6.0 feels like.
@@frankaye8845 allow me to give you a heads up, the scary ones really are 7 and up, today’s quake was nothing.
Northridge was a sharp jolt that just kept getting stronger and stronger.
Just make sure heavy objects are secure, and you will be fine.
Nah, that was a small quake. I've been through a 7.0 quake, trust me, the big one is going to make you jump
@@boardcertifiable I've been "waiting" for the big one since 1987.
@@boardcertifiable 7.0 will knock you off your feet.
@@boardcertifiable I have been thru at least three 7’s, trust me, I know what a 7 feels like. I lost my home in the Northridge quake, went thru the Whittier Quake, and a couple of others that I won’t mention cuz my sister got hurt.
I actually I like anything a 4 and less, and even the 5’s don’t bother me.
Yes, it was a small quake, but it still shook my place decently.
Stay safe, my friend👍
US: An earthquake rattled LA.
Japan: Hold my Kirin.
Central America: How cute
@@RM_VFX true. The Japanese are far more advanced with their earthquake preparedness and alert systems.
It’s the strongest earthquake I’ve ever felt. There were 3-5 strong shakes back and forth, then it faded out. The shaking only lasted 2 or 3 seconds. I live about 10 miles from the epicenter.
@@InsaneStryker777 I live 11 miles from the epicenter. It was a decent jolt.
I hope you don’t mind if I share my Northridge quake with you, just to give you an idea what it felt like. It was a crashing, strong jolt. It literally threw me out of bed. I remember trying to make it down the hall to check on my family, and as I ran, I literally bounced off the walls.
It wasn’t horrible, it was just a huge shock waking up like that. Anything not secured went flying.
We were prepared in that our heavy items were mounted to the walls or the ceiling, but anything not secured went airborne.
Just be prepared, cuz it seems like the really strong ones usually strike in the early morning hours.
Stay safe, my fellow earthquake experiencer.
With love from japan
Thank you, you guys got the real deal over there ❤
There's no such thing as love
@@gamera3284mr buzzkill
Thats a pretty strong 4.4!
@@LydiaStarz that's a truck in front of your house.
As someone who lived through a magnitude 7+ earthquake, I actually think it's a weak earthquake, nothing major, and I'd be fine if it happened , not a big deal. .
SoCal needs to get serious about seismic adaptations for water delivery.
This is semi-desert, loss of water supply can cause loss of life at any time of year.
Emergency preparedness is critical.
My housekeeper was freaked out! She doesn't speak English and I tried to calm her down. I allowed her to leave for the day - she was THAT UPSET!
...😆 🤣 😂 She tircked you. They have plenty of earthquakes in Mexico.
@@someguy9778 he did not say she from Mexico. He said she doesn't speak english. Good to take her day off, and she can calm down.

I had JUST walked in and closed the bathroom door, so wasn't sure what was happening for a moment. By the time I realized it was a quake, it was basically over.
0:20 ERROR- it was @1220- NOT 220!
Right that what i said im like get it right lady 😂😂😂
Slip of the tongue.
That’s what happens when bots regurgitate info 😂
If she felt it, how could she get THAT wrong?!?
To those non-natives..wait until its a 6.5 or bigger..
The tourists got a nice dose of the Cali shake n' bake.
@@frankied9577 yup.
What was your most memorable earthquake experience?
I was a gymnast and my coach would always teach me to tuck and roll, so, that’s kinda how I think in a big quake, tuck and roll, baby.
I think I will pass. The smaller ones I have experienced while on business there have been enough.
@@dizzymindy6024 1972 sylmar I was 6yo ..1986 Whittier and 1994 Northridge
No thank you!
That's a real serious quake with devastation
Best thing about earthquakes is getting to hear from Dr. Lucy again.
She's amazing, I look forward to her recap tok
@@PaulMcElligott yup!! Gotta love Dr.Lucy!!!❤️❤️❤️
Ngl she cool for seismologist lady.
❤I’ve been in 7.1 twice in Soithern California. I’ve been in 5 and the 4. Can be very jolting in the way it hits surface and or deep in the earth. The 7.1 was mind blowing and I lived by the beach immediately the waves became huge.
I went through a 4.4 when I was working up in Silicon Valley. Foster City is on reclaimed land. It was my first quake (I grew up in TX). It reminded me of getting into a boat from a dock. I just rocked back and forth. My dog slept through the whole thing.
My First quake was Feb.9 1971. Been a pain ever since then!
🏄♀️
I remember that one!
Was living in Pasadena; shake, rattle, and roll!!!
Yep. In 1971 I looked out the window to see the telephone poles swaying like palm trees and the surface of the street seemed to be ripples on a pond. No damage where I was but Mom was closer to the epicenter. The cabinet doors flew open, her glass and china items were thrown to the floor. In the Quake of 1989 in SF I rushed to get away from the overhead lights that were swinging hard. Three blocks from there people died from bricks falling onto their cars in the parking lot as they left work. Big quakes are no joke.
1971 was my first earthquake too.
@@michaelshifflett76 oh, you were alive for the Sylmar quake? My father in law fixed that hospital after the quake. He always told us about it.
That teacher says" I was sitting at the desk...., and we kinda just froze". Seriously? You didn't instruct children to Stop, Drop and COVER? WOW!! Must be a PUBLIC SCHOOL.
Was out there in Pasadena. Crazy. 😮😮
Water becomes unavailabile after a serious quake.
Get a filter straw that purifies any water so you're not caught out.
Gas and electricity were gone for a week in the Sylmar quake, so having a camp stove so you can boil water to purify it.
When I was growing up in California we lived in a cabin that sat on a rolling layer which means that when we had a quake the two crusts would grind against each other pushing one or the other up or down. Anytime there was a shaker it felt like it was moving the house an inch or two in either direction.
That looks almost believable. Almost as believable as a wounded ear. Amazing work.
wont scare the homeless away
No, but they wont be freaked out loosing their home and belongings either.
@@lesliepropheter5040 it will fall into the pacific ocean
The quake felt so strong because the earth is constantly breaking down. So we will feel them more intensely as we get more of them.
LMAO
What does homeless have to do with earthquake you well regret writting as they well be survivors as yours well be new homeless its not funny to use them as example if god didn't say step aside cant believe you are in moocher y bless all alone in this time .
We have a 5 gal of water, a 3 day grocery stuff at the trunk of our SUV. We even have a shovel. We attended a seminar given by the LA fire dept. they said at least 3 days of supply. Too many to rescue you don’t know when ur turn. Its in the car in case the family needs to evacuate.
Live in south Pasadena close to the epicenter and it was intense.
I'd take that over a 12-hour Hurricane any day...Lol...
That wasn't a REAL quake! 7 plus is a REAL quake! Not comparable to a hurracane. Just ask Fukashima Japan!
Try a 9.2 and then comment
Ide take that quake over a 🌋 volcano or 🌪 tornado any day
I been through both 6.6 in L.A. in 1996 and Many Hurricanes including Katrina. Hurricane is costly, Stressful and alot of Prep and Trouble.
Me too
None of the people in the videos handled the earthquake right. I know it was small but don’t wait to find that out.
Exactly why I don't much faith in what journalists say. The quake was at 12:20!
felt it. It felt like a good 7-10 seconds if that. Im in East Hollywood so a bit of a distance from the epicenter.
Its just a reminder that the big one WILL eventually happen. Be prepared with a big supply of food and water on hand. Either that or move.
I find it so funny when a small earthquake happens in California and the news talks about it non stop for the next few hours and reminds us about the big one and how we are overdue, oh and they always bring in an expert even though they repeat the exact same things over and over again
Because the big one is coming and it’s not funny, unless you haven’t experienced a “big one”. When you do, you won’t find these reports funny ;)
Came here to say this. These earthquakes are so common and normal here but still remains “breaking news” on all the channels. It’s cringe. There are actually important things to talk about.
They never mention that the big one is for northern California, Not Southern California.
ohhhh…. Nevermind. It is the Southern california fault that is accumulating strain.
“The San Andreas Fault (SAF) has accumulated a slip deficit of about 6-8 meters over the last 300 years due to its slow movement rate. The fault's average slip rate is between 20-35 millimeters (mm) per year, or about an inch per year. However, the southern San Andreas is mostly locked and continues to accumulate strain, which will be released in future earthquakes.”
@@michaelguerra1644 It's for both. More than one big fault lines in California. There is actually a higher possibility of it happening in Southern California. Look up "California Earthquake Authority" for reference
Do you live in California?
I was sleeping that earthquake woked me up on God
My pressure went up so bad 😢😢😢😢 gotta keep calm so scary
It was crazy scary 🫣 everyone at work started running out of the offices. UGH For 4.7 or 4.9 it really felt like a 6.5 to me 🤔
There’s been quakes in California and Japan constantly the past 5 days
Britta in your fridge will NOT work. So strange, in the 80's and 90's we practiced earthquake readiness all the time.
4.4 aint nothin. Not worth getting outta bed.
I was still in bed when it happened, shook me back and forth a few times
I was in the Northridge earthquake and I was literally dreaming that I was in a earthquake. My friend was spending the night and woke me up. The earthquake here seemed bigger than a 4.4 from the video footage
Except it woke me up:( Not sure if the woman screaming woke me up first or the jolt?
Except when it’s exactly under your house
i was taking a dump when it happened, i was like aww hell noo!!
I was at a red light and I thought my truck was bogging down... lol. I was like no way! My truck was working just fine! Then the shaking went away lol.
Why don't people store water?
That's a gallon of water per person per day. Water is life! Don't be caught in an emergency without it.
the news tells us what we already knows LOL
El de Italia, hace unos anos, fue 6.3... Tiro un pueblo abajo, es desastroso..
This has to be at least my 15th quake in SoCal the last decade, this one felt bigger than all the previous. Idk maybe it was the cheap building, it’s new😂!
😢 I felt it
It start God have mercy
It was a fun quake for it being a weak 4 pointer.
LA was the epicenter which normally isnt. Nor was it fun. Here was violent. Depends also where you are.
@@FayCilf I was in Gardena, but I was living in Inglewood at the time the 1994 6.7 Earthquake hit.. Now that was an Earthquake!
I went to a 7-11 with my BF a few minutes after the earthquake since we were already on the road, and the employees mentioned to us at a lot of stuff had fallen over. I guess they had picked it up already by the time we got there. I comment to my dude, just wait for the news reports showing surveilance footage of the inside of stores during the quake and here we are!
Felt it good here in Rancho Cucamonga!
It's not a big earthquake, but when you're getting dental work done, and it happens, it's not fun. Was getting a cleaning and had sharp dental instruments in my mouth when it happened.
😊hope your safe
oh gosh thats sounds painful 😭😭 hope ur ok
That's wild! 😅 worst case scenario.
Ouch. That was one of the early use ideas for QuakeAlert, to warn surgeons to get the scalpels away...
Thankfully the hygienist had a steady hand so I wasn't hurt! But it could have been worse.
We get bigger earthquakes than that here in Arkansas... Calm down California people.
Time to watch San Andreas again
Lived there and worked downtown LA 70s. Worked on 5th floor, Customs Broker. I sat by the window. Got to work one day and my typewriter had literally gone OUT THE WINDOW lol Early morning QUAKE. WONDERED WHY ppl were gathered around MY DESK at 7:30am 😂🎉
PROBABLY get prepared??? Duh. . . 🙄
It's interesting to see the open ground moving like a wave.

0:04 is nobody going to talk about that there's a doge over there?
4.4 that's a small one. Much to do about nothing, just a trimmer. I lived in Southern California when they had the Northridge quake, now that was a wake up call. Lol
When you see all the homeless people and drug addicts running to Arizona, that's a big one.
Omg please paarotect the people of California
I was there during the Northridge, Landers, a couple centered in Pasadena, and one in Palm Springs. BIG fun.
A 4.4 is news now?
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. Matthew 24:7
That tiny EQ packed a BIG punch b'c it was quite shallow, plus it's on a strike thrust fault. Nasty little quake that could have been so much worse if the shaking had continued.
I felt it around my body.
Didn't feel it. We had a 5.3, 5 days ago. And no one is talking about that as much.
9.7 combined 🌄
I definitely felt that 5.3 hit. What was it? 9:10pm at night?
I just found out about it. Honestly, no one felt it
That quake happened near Bakersfield hence the lack of coverage.
yes, there has been activity all week.. over 400 plus quakes near the grapevine alone

Omg. That's scaaarryyyyy
No prepareration.. people are going to be in a world of chaos during the big one. The bad people will just steal what you have, and maybe take your life doing it...
Other states have hurricanes, floods, snow storms, etc. California has 4.4 shakes… 🙄
That's a baby earthquake
Didn’t even feel it 🥱
wait for it...
geeze guys grow some balls minor quake
I’m always thinking is this the one 😮
Ive felt tremors and they was horrid
The Earthquake was at at 12 20pm the lady sed 220pm get your facts straight
That has more of an explosion signature than a typical earth quake. P wave readings?
That earthquake is nothing compared to the 1971 earthquake, 1987 or the Northridge one.. Now those were earthquakes. When you are a California native and grow up in that state you learn to live with earthquakes by being prepared.. Thats all you can do..
Reporter in yellow dress....💛💛💛
I was at mcdonald's yesterday I saw the window moving and felt it little bit
Hmmm I wonder how this happened 🤔
real groundbreaking news
Was less than 5 miles away, wasn’t too bad, it was really quick
That's a strong 4.4
Maybe gods telling them something
Earthquakes have been happening before humans were a thing
1:04 Doge art. This guy is cool.
Why are people surprised about earthquakes around this year ? It youre a true socal resident youll know they usually happen duting the hot summer days
4.4 aint even worth reporting. Must be a slow-news day.
it felt way bigger. i was surprised that they downgraded it, i thought it was at least a 5.
If you were at a hospital or dentist and doctors are performing surgery or whatever, any magnitude of earthquake matters
Maybe it’s the prelude to the big one
The big one is not a proven fact.
shake, rattle, and roll.... let's go!
Never forget where you live!!!
I am a native of Highland Park CA. I don't want it to be remembered for something like THIS 😱🤣😆😂‼️
