Love the old school method of hand packing the bearings. Back in the day we didn't use gloves and it was pretty much a guarantee that your nose or ear or something would get itchy right about that time. 😁 That is a dream shop press you have Del. I have an old jalopy that has pressed in hub bearings. Once they wear out I will look into a cheapy Harbor Freight press. More stuff in my overstuffed garage. Thanks so much mate, i think taper bearings have to be a mandatory upgrade, specially given that they are not only better engineering, but also the roller bearings are way more expensive due to being an OEM supplied part..! Have a great weekend too and stay safe.. D&Px

Excellent! Love the work as always of course, and you're still the only one I've seen on TH-cam that packs the bearing grease properly. That's exactly how my WW ll Veteran Father (Canadian) and my WW ll veteran Shop Teacher (British) made sure to show me in 1975, and Lord help you if it wasn't done correctly... :)
I totally agree with both of them, lol! it's absolutly essential for the long life of the bearings, doesn't just lubricate them but keeps the moisture out too. I learned it from someone of the same era, and at the about the same time as you. Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience, happy days aye?. .
Remember replay mine last year, looking everywhere for a peice of steel tube the same diameter as the bearing to put it on the yolk. Also a load of Amazon special bearing drivers did the trick 😎

Was about to say that when pressing out there may be a clip so don't make the mistake of pressing in the wrong direction.
Might is be a good idea when pressing back in to use some oil/grease?
In any case another great video. The extra time and info that you put in is valued.
Always press downwards through the bottom of the yoke, some have an internal snap ring, like this one, others have an external circlip, but either way, you'd never press the stem upwards... a thin film of grease round the stem is all you need to press it in. Thanks for watching mate.
Nicely done. You're probably the first person I've seen on you tube to do it right. Most tighten the second nut down to align the groove for the tab washer and then when you fit the top yoke and tighten the top nut your bearings are too tight. Must do the same job on my fireblade soon. The press would be handy. Enjoyed the vlog.
Yeah, easy misconception aye, there is a soft rubber ring between the two collars, they don't tighten against each other, the tension on the lower ring affects the critical tension of the bearings, the top nut on the yoke holds the top ring still and the tab washer holds the bottom ring still... possibly could have mentioned it in a bit of detail.. but elected to just demonstrate it instead .!

The ol' Whiteboard strikes again! I recently bought Bob's album Legend especially for that song Three Little Birds. A YT channel called "The Kiffness" popped up in my feed with a sweet little boy singing Three Little Birds and the Kifness remixed it. I highly recommend everybody to watch it! I've done head stock bearings quite often and struggled with the bearing race removal. Your techniques are very handy.
Sadly there are big inconsistencies from manufacturer to manufacturer with head stock tube dimensions. 🤕
Some don't have those reliefs. 🤦♂️
You're right, they don't all have the notch gaps, some just a very tiny lip edge showing, and some none at all, that 90 degree chisel works on any of them, just an old tyre iron with the socket cut off, and the end sharpend on he grinder and hardened.. need a tool make a tool aye..lol!

Even though I knew that tapered bearings are better, I went the OEM route on my last maintenance job. I simply felt more comfortable with doing it that way. What I realized though is that all the bearing presses have only attachments for tapered bearings so I was left using the old school way of the old bearing cups and/or properly sized sockets.
We do what we need to aye mate, just get the job done.

Yeah, really important to pack them full of grease for half a chance at a long life on the bike.. Sorry to hear about the van mate, i guess you're wearing it our with all that work you're doing.. you never stop mate .!

I've done this to 4 bikes, 600 bandit, xr250, 900 hornet and cbf1000. The cbf just wouldn't play ball, I couldnt make taper roller bearings work, even though I've fitted them before and had the service manual too. I gave up and bought Std ball bearings and the job was done in an hour, after a week of swearing. My conclusion? Something to do with the difference between axial load and radial load.
Thats unusual, never had that happen yet. the taper bearings should be a direct replacement, made to the same dimentions as the ball bearing races.. perhaps they sent you the wrong ones ?

Not at all, there was a champher machined on the top of the stem tube to protect the threads, you're not using any impact on the stem, just sustained pressure, and as you saw, both collars spun straight on to the thread with no issues... Also, I'm sure you saw the bike, whilst also on it's main stand, is suspended under the engine on a small jack and blocks, the ratchet straps are simply to hold the clocks and headlight so they're not hanging on their wiring!

But last bike the wheels spindles were dry as sand
Should I grease them up like my 21 plate bike or leave them?
Thanks Karl, yes, a lifetime of practice, but it is a pretty simple job all the same, just take it step by step and you'd be fine....With axles you should always apply a layer of grease when fitting them mate, the bearings do the rolling, the axles don't rub against anything in motion.. the grease layer just stops the road moisture rusting them in place making them hard to get out next time.. Sorry to hear about your bike, hope you weren't hurt mate.. and it soulds like youre back on the road.

Lucky I had parked up and a plonker drove into the bike knocking it over and damaged every panel on the motorbike beyond economic repair.
