    What popular books did you find were worth the hype?

    • @BookChats
      @BookChats หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Fifth Season comes to mind right away as worth the hype.

    • @ComeUndun.

      The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline.
      Usually, I find really popular books to be a bit of a let down, but this one was actually really good imo.

      The bear and the nightingale, Scythe, Nettle and Bone, The night circus (though this last one is a hit or miss)

    I actually love more "haters to lovers" 🤣 enemies definitely sound more serious and it never is like that in the books, it's always a stupid reason 🤣

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      LOL you're not wrong. I feel like it's much harder to make up a good reason in a contemporary than a fantasy setting.

    • @gracesull78756
      @gracesull78756 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      yeah and a lot of the contemporary ones are just a misunderstanding which some ppl rly hate, i don't mind necessarily but it does get tired at a certain point (especially if it was stupid lol)

    For a fun little read Steinbeck's Travels with Charlie, it is about his traveling the US in a truck camper with his French poodle Charlie, and his observations on America. And Charlie is also quite a personality. Also the Wayward Bus. Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. :)

    I thought Atomic Habits had some good golden nuggets in there (like the habit stacking or the idea that 'winners and losers have the same goals, it's about strategy') but I could not get over the fatphobia. Weight loss and dieting is used as an example of a good, positive achievement on literally every single page. There are so much more interesting and productive things people can achieve and it really put me off. I'm about to read Atonement and One Dark Window so now I definitely can't wait!

    I took a class on Steinbeck for my master's in Literature. A lot of his writing definitely stays with you. His most popular are Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. I do recommend the 90s film of the latter with John Malkovich. So good!

    I will say it again, if you like Atomic Habits, you should read The Power of Habit by Duhigg. It’s the book that inspired Atomic Habits and is sooo much better. It reads more like a science book than a self help book, and gives real life examples of how corporations use the science of human habits in order to get the people to do what they want…such as keep buying their product or keep going to their casino, etc. So good. ❤

    I read East of Eden and Shadow of the Wind years ago and loved them. Brilliant Friend is on my nightstand ready to go. If you want more Steinbeck, I thought The Grapes of Wrath was even better than Eden, just get through that first chapter and you're good to go. The rest of his work is novellas, pick any and you will probably enjoy it! Thanks for the video!

    I still haven't read East of Eden, but if you're interested in more Steinbeck The grapes of wrath is great. I wanted to read it for years and even bought it and then a college teacher I hated recommended it and made it sound boring and that made me not read the book for years and when I finally did I read it in two sittings even though it's 600 pages. It may be a little boring at first, but it's one of my favourite books ever

      I second this recommendation. I've read several of Steinbeck's books/novellas (The Red Pony is good) and I loved East of Eden but not as much as I loved Grapes of Wrath. What a powerful book. Can't recommend it enough.

    Oh good!!! East of Eden I want to read that next year. I agree I’m really not a romance reader I can’t say why it is I picked up beach read to begin with but I ate it up! I stayed up late into the night I had to finish it! I was sooo invested! It made me rethink my aversion to romance which the irony of that concept was a fun thing too. Atonement! Good to know I saw the movie too I think that’s why I havn’t picked it up yet it’s collecting dust on my shelf. And I’m like but… I saw the movie! 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I read East og Eden last year, and picked up Grapes og Wrath this year. I think East of Eden is my favourite, but I really enjoyed The Grapes of Wrath as well. The dialogue is written in dialect wich was a bit difficult in the beginning since english isn’t my frist language, but as I got used to it I found that it helped tell the story. There is a scene in the end that is a bit strange, but maybe the meaning of it went over my head.

    If you loved Shadow of the Wind that much but not the 2nd book, I'd highly recommend going on and reading books 3 & 4. Book 2 is a prequel and has a completely different tone than the other three books, for reasons that are given in Book 3 (unreliable narrator but why he's so very unreliable is told then) - but Book 3 picks up right where Book 1 leaves off and you can read Book 2 in basically any order, or even skip it - Books 1, 3, and 4 need to be read in order. If you want I can give you the spoiler as to why (not really such a spoiler as it's told fairly right away in Book 3). I was totally confused by Book 2 until I went aha! when what really went on in that book was revealed in Book 3.
