Oh wow, it seems there were no trained wildlife handlers -- otherwise they could have shot an anaesthetic dart to lessen the stress of 6 hour rescue. The local county itself perhaps lacks the resources to protect and manage these precious animals

It was already sick and with water around, they probably didn't want to risk it more by putting it under drugs.
No, theyre professional and know more than you. Dont go around tranquilizing sick animal, anesthesia is no joke.
