Thanks!!!
Yo, steven from back in black… you’re right, we did let there be rock for you sir. Thanks for the awesome recap. Awesome channel
This just made my year!!
This is just way too wholesome! 😂
All you guys rock!
Mike, thank you SO much for the incredibly kind words about our band. We have been fans of your channel for awhile so it was a total trip to share the stage with you, man. And as our bass player Steven said in a previous comment, we added Let There Be Rock for you🤘 Hope our paths cross again very soon! Best wishes and thanks again for this great gig recap😊
What a cool gig. Thanks for the comment and thanks for letting there be rock. ;)
Is great to see you guys on this channel. Always loved playing shows with you guys.
Bring them down to Dallas
An angry sound man?! I'm shocked! lol ...cool video. I like these gig reviews you do about your performances.
He wasn't angry, just seemed angry. hehe
I saw Back in Black at House of Blues in Dallas around 2010. Honestly, if I had closed my eyes, I don't think I could've noticed the difference between them and the real band. That's cool that you got to open for them.
You are a super-entertaining and talented storyteller. Perkins! Karma!
Man I really really enjoy your gig recaps. You're a natural storyteller.
Uh, glad that the gig went MOSTLY ok for you for a change:) Props to push through it without a monitor!
I'm sure many can relate, but once we played in the middle of the woods on a small legit transport trailer used for a stage and there was a very passionate sound guy with his home made PA speakers..and was playing my backup 15w solid state, overloaded with a pedal to get some volume..it was a best gig in my life, I thought that I was on a bloody stadium filled with sound, that guy never stopped messing with his tablet. He asked me 15 times if everything is ok:) What a guy
Bigger stages experience usually has cocky angry sound techs and monitoring sucks, and it's a pain making it through our set.
They used to put on this show called Jack FM Throwback down in Dallas. A buddy and I went to a couple of them then they stopped doing it. It was around 20 tribute bands on 3 stages and they headlined the main stage. It was a great time
Those were great shows. I couldn’t believe how well he nailed both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson not just vocally, but the whole performance.
I saw Back in Black a couple years back. They are awesome. Sounded great. Probably the best AC/DC tribute band I’ve seen. The singer is killer.
Back in Black is AMAZING. I know them personally and have seen them 3-4 times. Darren does such a good job switching between Bon and Brian, and instrumentally they're all flawless
That's awesome they are out across the country. I've opened for them here in San Diego. They are amazing. There are quite a few tribute bands that play all over the country/world from down here in southern California. It's cool to see them grow to that level.
They definitely added Let there be rock for you.
You are right. AC/DC should have taken their singer instead of Axl. I watched the BNB doc twice. Was very interesting. So many AC/DC tribs out there. I have friends in several around Toronto. All of them play all over Canada. By the way, I too, play from time to time in a Heart trib. I was originally the guitar player, then quit just before COVID hit but they keep calling me for gigs since I already know all the songs and I can sing. Playing bass for them lately. Great work. Love your channel.
My band opened for a Canadian AC/DC tribute (Hell N Back) a couple of months ago and that was also a lot of fun, those guys were fucking great and some of the nicest dudes ever so this made me remember that story, always fun getting to play with an AC/DC tribute so this was a lot of fun to watch
I love this video! I love hearing stories of other tributes. It's funny you mention "Bon Johnson " That's our singer's name! We also did a gig with a Heart tribute here in Richmond, VA. Great videos Mike. Keep up the great work👍🍻
Love your concert going and playing live stories.
Angus Young is 5’2”😃
157 cm. oh dear.
@@TheBcoolGuy The tallest member of AC/DC is the bassist and he is 5 foot 8.
Malcolm was a similar height, too, so his Gretsch looked huge, which worked 'cause he made it sound huge! 🤘😆🎸
I remember seeing Back in Black at the Cabaret in Archbald, PA. That was about 35 yrs ago. I wonder how many line up changes since then. It was an amazing show
Done many shows opening for them. Great band. Great guys. Just pure quality all around. They deserve everything they get.
Mike, I just wanna say, from when I first picked up my hand-me-down acoustic, I always watched your videos, you've helped me a lot on my journey of playing guitar, and I am working on lead guitar projects now! I love your videos, never quit posting!
I love the “tails from the road” as this is the stuff we deal with on a regular basis.
I also opened up for Back in Black several years ago. It was such a fun night and we got a great reception from the audience, even being the opening band.
But while Back in Black was performing, an 80-year-old woman confused me with someone else and punched me in the face. 🥊
I was surprised, laughed, and she quickly walked away when I turned to tell my bandmates. 😆
Keep up the great work! 🎸
Saw Back in Black play Arlington, Tx after a Rangers game. They were great. Very cool how the vocalist transforms from Bon to Brian and back to Bon.
Saw Back in Black in Honolulu while on vacation. Awesome show (and they did do "Let There Be Rock")!
Great story. Totally been there on all accounts. Thanks for sharing.
Yup. My band has opened for those dudes many times down here in the Dallas area. Super nice guys. Best AC/DC tribute around for sure. 🤘🏼
Love the show and gig reviews!
This was friggn awesome
My Journey tribute band played with Back in Black in san Angelo Tx before they did that documentary. It was a backyard party and it was excellent.Their documentary was hilarious!! as for your intro about playing outside.I was in a Kiss tribute band as Peter Criss and we played some bar by a lake and the mosquitoes were full on attack and it was miserable...
When are you going to do your own rig run down and show us all your gear?
Make it happen Mike!
I 3rd this, and as a nerd I’d love a video on your guitars and why you have them 🤘
That was great, really enjoyed the insight of set-up, show and people.
Very well told!Enjoyed this!
Yo ! Professional soundman here ! I won't speak for all my peers, but you really don't wanna think "I didn't want to bother the sound guy with my mix problem". My job is to make sure you guys can hear yourselves well, are happy and can give the best show you can. I have the whole set to dial in the perfect sound for Front of House, but once the show has started, i won't be dialing your monitors anymore. And if the band sucks because they can't hear themselves, i won't be able to fix that from FoH !
Never feel bad to ask monitor changes to your sound engineer, that should always be their priority.
I had that same problem couple of years ago playing a music on main. I'm from Portland Tn ,, small town about 40 miles north of Nashville. Couldn't hear what I was doing the whole night. Definitely made it rough playing leads.
These gig recaps are great. I'm in a smashing pumpkins tribute and your experiences are so relatable.
Your gig recaps are really insightful
These guys are legit! Great sound..🤘✌️
I saw these guys in some bar a few months ago and they were amazing. The singer sounds exactly like bon scott!
I had a job checking on a girl suspected of insurance fraud. We got word she would be at the Back in Black concert in Lancaster, Pa. The Lancaster Police were there getting into the show and music, the girl was there, but her claim was legit, and I had a great time with the whole scene. Wins all around.
this is cool I can kind of relive my old band days vicariously! please do a video for all gigs
Cool to hear Marcy Playground get a mention! I've been a fan of theirs since 1997. I'm glad they're still around, just wish they had more albums out. I was actually just listening to their debut this past week at work!
Also, your Bon Johnson comment had me rolling! Looks like the show was pretty awesome!! 🤘
Just saw an AC/DC tribute band named Captain Angus. They were good enough to pull it off, and that made me and everyone there happy for a few hours.
Cool to hear about the show.
I used to be amazing singer Darren C’s next door neighbor. He and his wife were some of the nicest people you’d ever meet. Glad all went pretty well for you guys!
*_KILLER!_* Appreciated. I saw Heart w Cheap Trick, Pine Knob, Detroit, 2015.
Great video man.
Yeah those guys are legit. They play regularly at a venue close to me since I’m in Texas and it’s always a super tight show. Alot of those Dallas bands are top tier.
I’m in 2 tribute bands here in Dallas. There are lots of outdoor venues in the metroplex and elsewhere in TX and we (and other bands) play outdoors most of the time. It’s hot as hell sometimes but you just deal with it. This 4th of July we played a town festival where the organizer literally almost passed out. My gf caught him before he fell down. The paramedics put cold water bottles on his arteries (good trick to know). It was north of 95 degrees and very humid. There was nowhere nearby with AC. The consensus of my band afterwards was we were all about 3-4 songs away from passing out ourselves. So hearing a Minnesotan complain about the heat is amusing 😉.
Good video about the typical gig-type stuff. Back in black is a great band, fun that you got to play with them.
Back in Black frequently does Houston. Great show. Always fun to see new people surprised by the act. They do take some time for their sound check.
My band opened for them in '15, was fun from what I remember.
Back in Black…. Amazing live!!! And agree, would have loved and preferred to see Darin play w AC/DC. Note, the bass players posture is that of Cliff’s. Not sure if that’s by design but the whole show is wonderful.
Thunderstruck is a great tribute band as well. I have some TH-cam videos from them. I was standing in the pouring rain, enjoying every second of it.
Yo. This guy is cool as can be met him at a Cfh concert tonight. Deserves all the love he gets.
With kind reguards. JJ
Great guys!!!!! Have opened for them a few times as part of a Metallica tribute band in the Dallas area. Our James (Who is also Scottie LePage of Polyphia's dad) ended up becoming Back in Blacks "Malcolm" for a couple years.
Great video. Sounds like a fun time.
I watched Back & Black in Kemha, Tx, really bad ass band. Definitely go watch their show if they are in a city near you.
We love you, Mike
My band opened for them in okc, but they had their own amps. Great band!
Pointless side note: Marcy Playground has some really great records. I always thought they were kind of a one hit wonder but their more recent stuff is awesome. Ok. Back to this: Great video! Huge fan of the gig recaps.
I'm glad you liked back in black. They are awesome and from my home area. I took my first guitar lesson years ago at their Rock School. I think I've seen Heartless advertised around the Dallas area but maybe a different band. I would love to see your band if you make it to Texas.
I watched that documentary and thought it was done very well. Pretty awesome you got to open up for them. Sounds like you had a blast so that is a bonus. Well done on the review 🙂
They’re a great cover band I got to see them in TX they put on a great show
Who Will You Run To is awesome, I wore out my first copy of Bad Animals on cassette….
Awesome gig recap, they sound like a great tribute band! I've yet to see an AC/DC tribute over here, just haven't made it to a show yet, Angus is pretty small, he's actually 2 inches shorter than me haha. Always love to see footage of Heartless playing, Even It Up is a great tune 🙂🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻.That's a cool shirt design, I probably would've gone with that instead of plain black as well!
So cool they played Let There Be Rock, that's great they watched your video for it, i'm sure they had it in mind when they chose to play it if it wasn't in the setlist. Definitely sounds like the real AC/DC missed a trick not taking on the tribute band singer.
Thanks. Great recap
Angus young is famously ‘not tall’
You would hate playing in Texas !
Love this type of video😅
They totally played "Let there be rock" because of you. In 2015 in Sturgis South Dakota I seen a Metallica tribute band and they kicked it in the a**. After the first break I seen a couple band members in the bathroom and asked if they did requests? He said like what? I said "Frayed end of Sanity" because real Metallica never played the full version live. And right after? They get back on stage? And I recognized those first few power chords that ring out. I freaked out and ran up to the stage on time for the singer let me sing "Oh-wee-oh". It was "F"ing awesome. They played flawless the whole song. Not even ten minutes after I asked. First time a tribute band gave me chills. Back in Black totally played that song because they seen your video.
I've seen their doc and it's really good. It's a roller coaster of a story leaving the viewer to think several times that this band with so much potential was finished. In the end friendship endured over all obstacles. It's a great story. Thanks for sharing your take from the opening band point of view.....even showing us the warts (poor Greg😂).
I saw Neil Young in concert upstate NY back in 1997. The show was just over 3 hours, and he only did about 12 songs. He had solos that went on for 20 minutes.
I use to live in Dallas , I’ve seen them many times, & met them a few times. All great guys !
Darren should have gotten the Gig , he sang with them for like 3 hours . My take on it is that the promoters had the stadium shows booked & wanted a big name to replace Brian , the promoters weren’t willing to go with Darren even though he is great .
I love your channel. I would love to see you show how to play different songs since educational music channels are actually in trouble on TH-cam.
I saw Axl helping DC out when they played Manchester, England and although I'm a fairly big GnR fan too I admit I had a few doubts when it was announced Mr Rose would be stepping in. I have to say though he did a brilliant job. Am sure your Back In Black guy would have nailed it too but Axl really did step up and knocked it out the park so I can't but think they made the right choice.
Thank you Mike.
I'd love it if you could make a video about how to get gigs when starting a tribute band. It's a whole different world than doing covers in bars.
“Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike! What day is it, Mike?!”
I was a sound man for more years than I care to count. We have reason to be angry. Trust me on this.
i wish i saw more footage of the show and of you playing
You know that clip from The Office that gets around, meme-style, where Steve Carell just keeps repeating, "Oh, god, no! Please! Please god, no!" That's how I feel whenever I am reminded of Marcy Playground. I remember they opened for Toad The Wet Sprocket at the Fillmore in San Francisco in 1997, and they were handing the Sex & Candy cassette single out to the whole crowd for free, and evidently all of my friends were at that show, because almost everybody I knew ended up with that cassette on the floor of their cars.
🤣🤣🤣
Great video, love the behind the scenes at concerts…I have a question, do these tribute bands have to pay the original bands royalties? They seem to be getting popular and drawing good size crowds these days, just curious. Thanks !!
Sounds like fun! How on earth did you manage to play without hearing yourself? That’s wild, lol. I always enjoy all the stories you tell that happened before, during, and after the concert. Shoutout to the beefy security guy and serious-but-straight sound guy!
That's why my band made the transition to IEMs. Now, we get a perfect mix every time. We just got tired of shitty monitor mixes.
When I heard Brian Johnson said he would have to sit out of the tour, I was hoping the singer from Rhino Bucket would have been considered... I think I read that he tried out, but obviously lost. Just hearing this tribute back, the singer is amazing... Would have been a good choice as well. I did not think Axl was a good fit, but star power rules the day.
Cool recap.
awesome breakdown - love these ones ( p.s. end up getting that white jackson bass, just looks so awesome.. need a few years to learn-to-play now :D )
Great video…
Were you at the Metallica show last night?!
I don't think I've ever hit play on one of your videos and not watched it to the end.
I saw Back in Black back in 1997, ‘98? They played Barre, VT. Also, Static X has a bunch of songs about Otsego.
I have a cabinet I'll probably never sell because Spike Cassidy from DRI played through it when my band opened for DRI, lol. I don't mind doing support slots for bands that need a backline.
God loves you
As young as you are, and not wanting to lug around gear. And here I am, soon to be 59, with two heavy basses, two bass heads, and two bass speaker cabs...and no one roadies for or with me 🤣
I lived in bemidji, let me tell ya .. an outside gig in Louisiana during the summer .. yeah talk about hot with mosquitoes and humid .. I’d much rather play in bemidji during the summer lol.
Good stuff. I think Angus is a small guy, a bit like myself.
There's a Canadian, Cover band that you should cover. A band called "The Snowdogs" pretty impressive. I think you'd enjoy them.
I love hearing your input on cover bands. I really hope you cover them. at least check them out. The latest tune was Rush "Limelight"
drummer is mind blowing.
Part of our rider always asks for a meal or discounted meal. I always eat good on show weekends! 😛
Side note on those Bose, they're loud asf! Unfortunately, my singer decided to put up a second set as a side wash (pointed at us) at the last show. I've never had so many issues witg feedback (even on clean).
RCF speakers rock. If he was mixing on an iPad, most of those systems have the ability for all the players to use their own iPads or iPhones to control their own mix.
I think Shoot to Thrill has Brian's highest notes.
14:28 Angus is actually REALLY short. I think he’s like 5’ 6”.
He is 5’2 that’s one of the reasons he didn’t play big heavy Les Paul’s
Always hated playing shows outside. The sound just seems to stop dead at the edge of the stage and just generally sounds less heavy. Not to mention that one of my favorite parts of seeing/playing a show is the moment you go from total dark to instant excitement. I hate it when the band just walks out, which is all you can do outdoors.
damn, Marcy Playground playing your amps is wild
more of a Wave Motion Gun kinda guy
So how did those FOH 'skinny speakers' sound during the actual show ... as good as your buddy predicted?
Sounded great.. Perhaps could have used another pair but from what I remember it was pretty damn full-sounding.
hey, you don't have to lament about being a half asian and feeling this and that around this and that crowd, this is a bit of a habbit of yours. I thought you were above that. Imagine your half white side being at, etc. You got it good. Hopping to continue enjoying this guitar channel.
Did they play Riff Raff, though? AC/DC's best song imo!
My wish candidate (instead of Axl, whom i saw w/ the band - and appreciated) would’ve been: Nikki Hill!
Always fucking awesome vid 🎉
