  • *Good all round steel*
    My blade steel guide for CTS-BD1. It is an entry level American made blade steel that is very easy to sharp and produces a very sharp edge although lacking in edge retention.
    Enjoy.

    Good video. I'm a big fan of the manix 2. Have an s30v, g10 all black, and a cruwear, carbon fiber model. Also a manix 2 xl in s30v. Today I received the manix 2 lightweight in translucent blue with cts-bd1. Love the 2.9 oz. weight. Action is smooth, lockup solid, blade centered perfectly. Love the wire clip and it came screaming sharp. Going straight in the pocket.

    howdy. yes I liked your video. I've been looking at Spyderco and the Manix 2 lightweight is what has my attention, but I'm not familiar with the BD1. you really helped by showing where it is on the scale relative to other models. obviously the S30 V version is "better" but it is also significantly more expensive. for now I think it will suit my.needs. thanks for the video

    Cedric's tests disagree with you. BD1 got better number of cuts through rope before not cutting paper than VG10 did.

      Cutting medium has a HUGE variation on how steels perform. Something that cuts longer on rope may cut vastly less on plastic or something that cuts tons of card board but perform extremely poorly on rope and so on and so forth. Well done vg10 will out perform bd1 on most mediums but bd1n will vastly out cut vg10 pretty much on everything. His comparing bd1 to slightly better then 8cr is highly incorrect.. bd1 out cuts 8cr by a significant margin, is more corrosion resistant and is most definitely tougher and more edge stable. Across most mediums bd1 at 60-6hrc and vg10 at 60-61 the overall difference in edge retention will be negligible at best during daily cutting where your cutting many different mediums. In a controlled setting with one specific cutting media you may see vg10 cut 10-15% more if going from hair popping to start until it will no longer slice printer paper across the grain without catching. Now here's the thing, if you go until both will longer cleanly slice paper (not just to the point of when it starts to catch) then BD1 will out perform vg10 by a significant amount. Bd1 being very edge stable really allows the apex to just round over as it dulls rather then the apex just crushing in on its self once the steel at the apex has fatigued to the point of needing a ReSharpening. Vg10 will blunt and just completely stop cutting as where bd1 will just get a rounded over apex that still will cut based on geometry. Probably the closest thing to performance of BD1 that's coming from China is 10cr that's at a near Rockwell number that will be fairly close to bd1 in overall edge life but again bd1 has a toughness advantage over it. Overall bd1 is possibly the single best budget steel on the market that is done in large volumes.. it's endlessly stroppable and responds to a simple leather strop and diamond emulsion (something like 9um or 5um... 3um Is absolutely as low as I would ever go on bd1, ideal imho is 9um) will allow an edge to be brought back to shaving sooooooo many times and that's due to the apex rounding and not crushing. With a course diamond emulsion and a strop that rounded over apex is easily brought back to a point and because of the course diamond emulsion you won't strop the apex smooth and glassy but rather it will retain bite/toothyness. It's funny to me when people are so heavily praising 14c28n as the best budget steel (and don't get me wrong it is an absolutely fantastic budget knife steel) but compared to bd1 its fine edge retention is less, it's working edge is less and it's overall edge life until no longer able to slice paper is longer. They both are incredibly stain resistant and extremely tough (14c does have a toughness advantage on bd1). 14c has an extremely fine grain structure and carbide structure that makes it go slick and loose bite very quickly when cutting as where bd1 retains its bite far longer.. 14c is highly strop responsive like bd1 is because the incredibly fine grain structure (for an ingot steel) once it gets slick its pretty much going to only become more and more slick/lost its toothyness with each time you strop the edge back.

    Great video as always. Very informative. I'm looking to get my first Spyderco UK legal and am torn between the UK PK and the Urban. I understand the steel is better in the Urban, though harder to sharpened, so that concerns me as a newb. I like shape and size of the UK PK and I think it may fit in my medium size hands better? I see you use the Urban as EDC, so any recommendations for a new lad? The knife won't see much hard use btw. Cheers Bradders.

      @Sup3rSaiy3n  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BraddersCat7 Hi. Thanks for your question. After much thought I would recommend you go for the Urban.
      Here's why: Ergonomics = If the knife won't be used hard how it fits in your hand won't be noticed as much. My hands are large and the Urban is still very comfortable. I can wrap all my fingers around it comfortably (please don't take that the wrong way ;) with the index finger in the choil. You can grasp the UKPK without a finger in the choil and if you were to do that with the Urban then yes your pinky would have nowhere to go. However it suits the Urban to have your index finger close to the blade as it gives you more control.
      Blade steel and ease of sharpening = The N690C is hands down way better than the BD1. Imo it is better than VG-10 as the edge would rather roll than break or chip. It is not hard to sharpen due to its composition and certainly not as difficult as a harder steel such as S30V. You will be able to sharpen this knife to a very sharp level and it will hold that edge. It costs more but it is definitely worth the extra.
      Hope that helps in your decision. I can't guarantee this won't be the only Spyderco you will ever purchase though ;)

    I have seen a video test comparison by someone called Cedric I think and he rates BD1 higher than N960C and also VG10. He got 112 cuts of fibrous rope with BD1 compared to 75 cuts for VG10. he stopped at the point where the blade could no longer reliably cut paper.

    • @Sup3rSaiy3n
      @Sup3rSaiy3n  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Silent but Descriptive There is no way carpenter steel CTS BD1 is better than N690Co or VG10. It would be like me saying VG10 is better than S30V or s30v is better than zdp189. You simply can’t argue the chemical composition of these blade steels.
      However what you can say is that the same blade steels will vary between manufacturers and treatments.

      Well I do not know what to say. I have seen conflicting opinions all over the place about BD1 steel. The guy I was talking about is here: th-cam.com/users/CedricAdavideos?disable_polymer=1 and here is a screen grab I took of how many cuts each steel took through god awful gnarly thick rope: i.imgur.com/mv50EoP.jpg Also he covers what knife it was during the test. I would be interested in your thoughts on this.

      Silent but Descriptive ya his vids are awesome. Maxemet got over 500 cuts. ctsxhp got like 250 cuts. And the cold steel broken skull can be had cheap in that steel

    suggestions:
    - a common high carbon steel: 1095 or any of the ones in the "10_5" series
    - s35vn? I know u did one on s30v, maybe a comparison or something?

    Great review, i think im going to re test this steel. I really mocked it when i had my lw manix but i think its looking at again. I think i still prefere 8cr.

  • @zednotzee7
    @zednotzee7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you are saying that it's a bit better than 8cr, but not quite as good as 440c, is that right ? If so, then that would agree with my experience with it. It is a perfectly good steel for the normal uses of a pocket knife though in my opinion ( although I suppose that would depend on what you'd class as normal use of a pocket knife, lol ).

    • @Sup3rSaiy3n
      @Sup3rSaiy3n  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zednotzee7 Hit the nail on the head there. Although you could get the edge sharper than 440C, due to its ease of sharpening and edge manipulation, it unfortunately won't hold it for no where near the time 440C can. Definitely a worthy steel for an infrequent use pocket knife but not as good as a worker knife such as VG10 for food prep or every day use.

    Hello there, i am trying decide which steel i want in my next purchase, the Spyderco Manix 2. Not all people think highly of the BD-1... i would like a really good steel, so do you think i am better off going with a S30V model? I have heard many good things about it. Greetings from Denmark

    • @Sup3rSaiy3n
      @Sup3rSaiy3n  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. Yes if you would like a really good steel S30V is excellent. It will hold its edge very well just takes a bit longer to sharpen. N690Co is another blade steel that's hot right now.

    • @SilveradoDudeDk
      @SilveradoDudeDk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sup3rSaiy3n thanks. yes My pingo is with N690, i really like it. but the manix 2 only comes with Bd-1 S30v or S110v as far as i know. i am definitely getting the S30v then, i'd hate to get the bd-1 and then be disappointed. thank you for replying fast, much appreciated.

    Could you do a video on Cruwear Steel? Does anyone have any experience with it good or bad?

    • @SailfishSoundSystem
      @SailfishSoundSystem 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has better edge retention than AUS 8 due to more carbon content. In my use, a Spyderco Delica and Manix 2 lightweight are pretty similar. VG-10 is still my favorite over BD-1, but not by much. I keep a toothy edge on my BD1 Manix with the course stone from the sharpmaker. Works well.

    • @johnroberts6695
      @johnroberts6695 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The heat treat plays more of a role in the difference than the makeup of steel. AUS8A is a great knife steel and is one of my favorites. I like VG-10 and 154CM even more. I'm also a big fan of CTS-XHP. The thing about AUS8A and BD1 is that they're easy to sharpen and can be polished to a beautiful luster. Cold Steel is very good on their heat treat, but if I had my choice between the two steels, I'd take whichever one was polished to a mirror finish! I miss the polished blades CS used to provide. I've always got a sharpener on me, so I don't care about the extra cuts I may get with BD1. I love the blades shown here!

      +lerch400block You're welcome. Yeah tell me about it. It's been like this since the 80s and it was mainly down to one court case where a judge said there was no difference between a locking knife and a fixed blade. Since then it's stayed the same. You can still carry a locking knife/fixed blade if you have a good enough reason.
