That timing is off. U need to lock the crank with the flywheel. There is a hole under the starter that goes through the block in to the flywheel. That was the pin, what will was holding in the beginning. Also u need to put the tensioner in before u tighten the cam gears. If u start it like that and the vanos kicks in... bye valves!

It's already on the edge he didn't soak the lifters n the crank was torked to 270 bls not the 100lbs the 270 deg that he read out loud from the tork specs on his phone. I hope it goes well I like willy but think he and Chris are better off stickin to simpler set ups

TIMING IS OFF!!! You always lock the crank first and then put te chain on with the camgears and leave the bolt of the camgears loose. And then you put the tensioner tool on first then you tighten the cambolts. If you don’t it wil not be timed correct. The camgears have no keyway because you lock them with te bolts. PLEASE CHECK!! The engine wil blow if you don’t. The camgears wil allign with the crank when you put the tensioner tool on and then you tighten the bolts of the camgears and should be fine. But great work and respect for just doing it that’s the best way to learn cant wait to hear it come to life👌👍💪
Are you saying that the tensioner locates the cam gear? If your crank is locked at TDC (which he said he did) and the cams were locked with the tool (which he did) and the cam gears were tightened with the chain while all of this was aligned, how would it be out of time?
@@wildnbk he did lock the cams but not the crank. The crank locks at the flywheel and that’s not on. Before you tighten the camgear bolts you have to put tention on the chain with the tensioner tool so the camgears can rotate freely to take the slack out of the chain but the cams and crank stay locked. When you done that you can tighten the camgear bolt.
i havent timed n54 but pretty sure you have to install tensioner tool correctly before tightening cam gears to cams, that is exactly because of chain slack, gears do not have keyway so tightening chain removes slack and moves cam gears to correct orientation before tightening sprocket bolts. That's normal thing for bmws and for many others

That was the most painful timing procedure I have ever witnessed lol, also that is the easiest BMW engine to set timing , you did it right but I would have put the flywheel back on and dropped the pin in

He didn't have it on the engine and it's 4 strokes is a complete revolution that's why it's called 4 stroke engine. The spark plug only fires 1 time every 4 revolution's. If he would of went 4 turns the intake valve and the exhaust valve would of opened which would allow him to see if the valves would hit the Pistons

I agree with the other comments about installing tensioner before tightening the cam sprocket bolts. I would take the tensioner and cam bolts out again, replace bolts again, install tensioner then lastly the cam sprocket bolts again. This is the same as a VW engine I've worked on, you deffo need to apply tension to chain before tightening cam bolts.
You really need to stop listening to Tommy with this engine You NEED to flywheel on with the lock pin and that’s you “timing mark” you can’t just eyeball the piston at TDC the ecu will through vanos codes as there isn’t much of a tolerance You will need to get two new cam gear bolts and redo the timing procedure with the flywheel locked with the pin

Please re-time the engine with the tensioner in. There is a lot of threads and videos in this subject out there. And I think you were supposed to torque the crank bolt the 270° after the engine is timed but I could be wrong. But love the longer videos keep cranking them out! 😎💥

Since you didn't bleed the lifters, make sure you crank it with the starter to build oil pressure, like Sammit with his builds, before you fire it up. Hopefully, you'll get most of the air out of the lifters that way. In the future, always bleed new lifters no matter the make or model of vehicle!
I really hope Will gets this engine back together the right way for his sake , he has put alot of time and money into it so I want it to turn out good for him, but watching this makes me worry alot , I would have went and talked to a bmw technician to walk me thru the process or paid him a couple hundred bucks to come put it back together.
I've never done a n64 but m62TU and m52 and m54 engines and from my experience you should really use all the tools and use the tensioner tool. I hope everything goes well so Will will have a good running engine and be happy. And even if he has to do it a second time, you only can learn more and the next ones are even better and easier to do. I wish y'all all the luck and best with that thing, I'm excited to see how it goes.
U have to bolt the heezenhoffer to the grivis Ravis or you will jump timing to blinker fluid valves. The sending it unit will come unglued and the motor will lose half it's horses...yes forty five of them. Maybe Tommy has some extra blowmee bigmeet shaft pins laying around to stop the pins from leaking out pre-maturly. Idk. Hope y'all see this comment before starting her up
