    Presenter: Bill O’Hanlon
    Description:
People with depression, one of the most common problems we see, are sometimes “stuck” and can be quite challenging to treat.
Medications don’t help all depressed people and, even when it helps, they often come with uncomfortable side effects and only work partially. Sometimes working with depressed people gets therapists themselves depressed and discouraged.
In this presentation, you will learn six hopeful and innovative approaches for helping people with depression to get some traction to begin to come out of it. Because depression has multiple causes and contributing factors, there are many ways to shift it. These approaches draw on respectful, strength-based models as well as the latest brain plasticity research. This research casts doubt on traditional explanations of depression and shows a whole array of new angles for treating it.
You will learn about tools that you can use immediately to help chronic and acute clients suffering from depression. The presentation will be filled with compassion, learning, fun and possibilities. Bill O’Hanlon, who has suffered and recovered from depression, is a lively presenter with a fresh take on this topic.
    Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this lecture, attendees will be able to:
    • List new understandings of depression and its treatment
    • Implement six innovative strategies for relieving depression
    • Challenge prevailing models of treatment for depression
    Bio:
Bill O’Hanlon, has authored or co-authored 36 books, including Solution-Oriented Hypnosis, A Guide to Trance-Land, Taproots and An Uncommon Casebook, all touching on hypnosis. He has published 60 articles or book chapters. His books have been translated into 16 languages: French, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, German, Chinese, Bulgarian, Turkish, Korean, Indonesian, Italian, Croatian, Arabic, Polish and Japanese.

The answer to the pain of depression is being surrounded by SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE. If a depressed person has someone who will just come over and say: "Hey, let's get out and go walking", that very simple encouragement and companionship in itself would be MIRACULOUS help to the depressed individual. This was a really good and informative talk. The speaker is EXCELLENT! and very knowledgeable.

      Supportive often is too pushy.
      Support is WAAY difficult.
My family and friends are suicidal and i have survived into late 70's because my mom's support worked in general but I am no great personality. Huh? Why? I can't make myself sell stuff becuz it won't always work and my guilt drags me over broken glass and will always
somewhat drag me thru glass shards. 😬😬😝

@Amanda Garcia You are so right. I have no one. I'm a single mom of two, not a soul and wow it's so brutal not having support or even a person like ever. Friends/Fam are crucial to feeling better/healing. I use meds. I so wish I had anyone sometimes.

Thank you for this presentation. I have learned a lot of this already but it helps to re cap and have my feelings validated through this video. It’s difficult when someone tells you not to be sad or minimizes by acting like it’s not ok to be devastated when it reality it’s not linear and it’s personalized for every individual. It is what it is and nobody has the right to tell anyone else how sad a person should be or should not be in grief and loss. I’ve also experienced some gaslighting when I’m just trying to heal again. . So this presentation helped tremendously to remind me. Thanks again.

My friends brother had the worst depression I’ve ever seen and ended up in “the system”. Finally his dad had enough excuses, so his dad “broke him out”. He took him and put him on a huge amount of vitamins and fed him real juice from beets and carrots, etc. I don’t remember all of the details, but years of crippling depression with this kid were completely due to nutrition. Her brother started exercising and getting off of all the drugs they’d added over the years. It’s definitely brain chemistry and you have to fertilize your Brain with nutrition packed food and vitamin supplements

Very valuable information. My depression and anxiety stems from the fact that I tend to suffer in silence so as not to make others uncomfortable. The fact that so many derogatory effects are related to depression also plays a part in the recovery process . I don't know about others, but if you tell me that depression causes a variety of illnesses, that in itself contributes to making me feel worse about my condition. So I'm not only dealing with the depression but also the repercussions of what might happen if I continue to feel this way - a vicious cycle!

Inactivity due to bones healing really enhanced my state of depression over these past months. Pain is a great distractor. Exercise at the gym kept my head above water and was giving me hope in other areas. Now that the pain has subsided I’m able to walk again and engage I know I need to get back to it. Baby steps.

This confirms what i've been thinking and saying for quite a while also :) Makes me happy to hear it echoed and substantiated here. Psychiatric drugs are over prescribed, the ones prescribed for depression can have some nasty (deadly) side effects; I've seen it happen. Prescribed anti-depression meds and the next thing you know the person has offed themselves. Yoga is a great practice; best if one can bypass some of the woo astrological and new age trappings that often come with it but physical exercise, building strength flexibility, both mental and physical through yoga works. The breath work is fantastic. Breath is key to life itself and a common denominator to higher levels of many disciplines, dance, martial arts, any sports and in remaining calm in stressful situations. The meditation aspect of yoga also does a body, mind and spirit good. Another thing; exercise of any kind, such as lifting weights, running, cycling, swimming, etc regulates hormones, gives a person more energy, makes one less prone to injury and also makes one more toned and better looking. There is nothing like feeling good, feeling, sexy/attractive to buoy one's spirits. Often depression is the result of failing at this or that; failed relationships or the failure to attract a mate, dead end jobs or tenuous career, money troubles, being overwhelmed with responsibilities, family expectations, not being able to cope without a great deal of struggle. Life is hard sometimes. "There is nothing like the Zen sense of calm, which comes from having money" - Kurt Vonnegut Jr follwing the success of his book Cat's Cradle

Depression is a teacher. You're supposed to go inward, explore what you have there, or don't have, and then step out with a new perspective - no matter how long this takes. Some people spend much of their lives in meditation. These folks are working their internal lives out. There's nothing more insane than people who are or who are made to be perpetually upbeat. The smiley face e-moji captures it well. It's a dumb looking, pasted on look that demands conformity. I like my depressive phases and don't you dare take them away, or else I'll get depressed.

I found it interesting that Abraham Lincoln had melancholy, which is a subtype of MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) or a variation of major depression under the MDD umbrella. He went thru a deep sadness or suffering (Melancholy) mentally throughout his entire being, and I find the Catholic faith parallels this as far as suffering. Mr. O'Hanlon, I know religion and psychology are not supposed to mix, but faith is important for Catholics to prepare for death and belief in something is important for the mentally depressed not to commit death acts (suicide). Perhaps psychology can learn something from religion in attending some type of Life giving, loving religion, psychologist can learn how to be mentally tough in any type of adversity even to the point of non existence- or religiously a deep sleep. Thank you for sharing Mr. O'Hanlon, as a future psych learner one day, I find your webinars informative, inspiring, and transformational for me.

Abe Lincoln had the weight of America on his shoulders,a long with his son's Willie and Tad dying at 11 and 18 year's of age they died. Lincoln had hard things to deal with. Sadness and being overwhelmed are normal because there are many ups and downs in life, we cannot control ❗🇺🇲 We're complex people, with many necrological paths to choose from. When things in life are going right it's easy for all of us to be happy ❗

  • @StressRUs
    @StressRUs 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

From an objective physiology based perspective, clinical depression is the result of the exhaustion of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which are released along with adrenalin/noradrenalin in the stress response (aka fight-flight). In our appropriately named "toxic culture", where our stress response is overactivated, the cells producing these neurotransmitters become depleted and our mood and motivation suffer, aka "clinical depression". Thus, a well trained, experienced clinical psychiatrist (a rarity these days) can prescribe a combination of dopamine and serotonin releasing anti-depressants that will restore the dopamine and serotonin brain chemicals and, thus, restore mood and motivation, including sex drive, etc. The key to long term recovery is, then, stress management. Questions?

What can you do now today and the next couple of days, weeks months to increase joy one ,two three numbers on a scale from 1 to 10

Abstain from quick fixes like alcohol as the brain starts to rely on drugs for dopamine release. The brain stops making dopamine if you're constantly drinking. Let your brain heal and start making dopamine without alcohol/drugs.

Sorry to hear about your mum, it’s a major life event and normal in my opinion to feel sadness, you are grieving not depressed. Read up on stages of grief and look at yourself as someone who is grieving, not someone that needs to be cured of depression. I would also recommend finding a good counsellor to talk too, if you can afford it.

@@rickm6232 I agree with AJ's comment. In US culture, we don't talk about grief. It's easy to think something is wrong with us because we don't know the natural chaos of grief.
My father died 2 years ago, and I was disoriented, withdrawn, and all over the place with moods and energy...anxiety through the roof, depression, and switched to anger with annoyance with anything and everything. I had an interesting sense of being an abandoned child, as well.
After a year, I had to get support from therapists to help me unpack the complexity of the grieving experience. I just couldn't sort the confusion on my own. My friends didn't understand, and I didn't want to burden them. I felt ashamed that I couldn't be there for others like I was before.
I say all this about myself in hope that you will see you are not alone and that your struggle is typical with grief. Suicide adds another element, from what I've heard from others.
I wish you all the best, and don't be ashamed to reach out for help. I would suggest looking up videos on "complicated grief", too. Good luck and sending you much love with the hope that you find comfort and care soon. 💗

Clinical depression is by far the most common type of depression (you have bipolar depression , antenatal and/or postnatal depression, melancholia, psychotic depression, ...). Exercising alone won’t help you for sure. You definitely need a good treatment to stop the overthinking and the rumination. Depression is like a fog. No matter how bad you want to feel better and do stuff, you are still trapped in your own mind. The thing is, depression is your body and soul trying to tell you something. But it’s like a child who doesn’t feel quite good about something and starts yelling and crying. You have to calm the kid down (= what the antidepressant will do to you (not the kid)) so that he can better express what’s wrong. It might be your job, your environment, an unhealed trauma, a buried dream, the feeling that you’re not living the life you deserve. The opposite of depression is expression. I have clinical depression (it’s been 6 years but I feel way way way better than when it started) and what was a game-changer for me was to notice how important it is to move your body, to feel it, to reconnect your wondrous wandering mind with your body. Because your body is more than the receptacle of your negative thoughts, and pain and sorrow. It is strong, it can run, draw, paint, stretch, take a walk, look at beautiful things, listen to music, laugh, climb mountains.

So very true. Why fix something that is a normal reaction? People have very real reasons for being depressed. You're not necessarily mentally messed up. Things like dealing with breakups, losing a job, death, and other life experiences that may cause traumatic responses. I have been thru a lot of trauma and death of family and it's been hard. But I'm not bipolar and I'm not mentally ill

I don't agree. My antidepressant really helps me, and for a while there, I really made an unnecessary effort to stay away from medication. So I just wouldn't say that something, anything should be avoided, if it could help. But on the other hand, stuff other than medication, everything he talks about, really needs to be done also. I would rather say that non medication should be done first, and It often isn't. Doctors do love to throw pills at things. If you can get away without having to have a pharmacy bill, do it, but be aware of anything that can help you.

Depression is not genetic ❗ It's an excuse, people use❗ People get overwhelmed with all they have to do in this life, and there is no way to affectively cure any of this ❗So we have to menever through life strategies to cope with all we do! And like a computer 🖥️ we to can crash. Sometimes life is full of stuff, we don't want to deal with, that's beyound our control!
Being overwhelmed is normal, feeling like we just need a break is also normal! Being a parent is difficult, we can't choose good choices for our young adult children. We can't control anything in life❗But we can Choose how we handle things in our lives, that's something we can CONTROL ❗🙏🏻💜 Talking to people you know helps, because they might be going through the same things you are with their children. So talk to your friends, you can learn a lot from them, and how they have handled there problems ❗God has the power to heal our hearts and minds ❗🙏🏻💜
