i wish something like this was feasible in the US! our prices are so out of whack that scrapping a car might be worth more. currently in my city, the breakers are paying 750 dollars for a mostly complete scrap car. a running car is never less than 2-3 grand! and that's something that wont pass an MOT even with THOUSANDS in work. to find a car that passes your MOT standards, you'd be paying a minimum of 4500 dollars. covid and greed destroyed the used car market here. cars with no engines are worth a grand to many buyers because they cant find anything used on the cheap.
It's youtube tho - actually fixing a car and making it better isn't going to get views from people who were funneled into this channel because Clarkson, Hammond and May. No-one at DT does that work, and they hand it over to the support shop even for their "proper" builds, if you hadn't noticed. If you actually like cars and want to see that sort of thing, go watch Gears & Gasoline or similar.
Mmm I think it depends on what you’re buying. I’ve purchased a couple of cheap cars from places like Facebook Marketplace. In the case of the 2000 Volkswagen Golf TDI, I didn’t care if it was modified with cheap parts. In fact a Golf TDI with lower springs was a plus for me since I was likely gonna do it myself lol. Same for my 2001 Saab 9-5 Wagon. I didn’t mind any modifications. All I cared about was that it ran and drove. However in the case of the 2007 Saab 9-3 and 2007 Mercedes Benz C230, I did prefer a stock car. If I saw that KA for sale with some painted hubcaps, lower springs, and a cheap intake all for $800. I’d be all over it lol.
I find the cheap eBay mods are the easiest way to make money on basic cars, fix up a fiesta or golf or polo, put eBay mods on it and sell it to a boy racer for more than it should be
I had the SportKa - completely broken, couldn't even open one of the doors, one wheel literally snapped in half... It was easily the best car I've ever owned! Easily. Road legal go-kart! 1.6 felt fast (it wasn't but whk cares?) and handled like... Well, it's about 2cm long! It's a go-kart! Handled like a go-kart! And I didn't care if I damaged it. Cost me £50 and sold it for £60. Brilliant. You basically can't crash them. You think you've crashed, and you're in the middle of a crash... but then realise there's another 5 feet of road left to go before you leave it! They're not even fast enough to crash, but you FEEL like you're found fast So much fun. Every now and then I look at prices with a mind to knock out the windows, weld in a scrappy cage, and go grass tracking like when I was a teenager. Reckon they'd blow everything out of the park! When I used to go tracking (rallying on the cheap for those who don't know) the very best cars I raced were the Citroen AX GT and the Metro GTi. Miniscule, fast, and most of all *cool!* I reckon a SportKa would be invincible. All those old mechanics racing battered MK2 ford escorts and Rover 200's wouldn't stand a chance against a 13 year old in a SportKa! Or me... Lol.
Quick tip, take a plastic cup and slide that over the oil filter before you unthread it completely. Keeps all the oil contained instead of it just rolling down your arm. We've all done it, but when i saw that trick years ago, it changed my life lol.
I used to hire these on the cheap to go to London years ago and I can assure you that the KA is fun quick ! Everyone knows hire cars are the fastest cars around.
The ka was my first car, my first taste of freedom to go anywhere whenever I wanted and petrol was still under £1 a litre! It was a fun little car to drive, sure it wasn’t fast but you could sling it around A roads and have fun. Will always smile when I still see these around thanks to those days
its still up for sale just on the ebay account they used to sell the MGF convertible barn find, if you do on the video with the sale link for that and click on the account the Ka is for sale, same reg, miles age etc.
2:39 So, you're starting out by blowing half your budget on making the car less comfortable, less practical (as it won't go over speed bumps as easily), noisier, and more expensive to insure? Will this really increase the value, I wonder?
Curveball in the next one - given that the KA's already up to a couple of grand, buy three old MGs (180s?) for peanuts, get them back on the road and shift 'em for £2-2.5k each, probably more given that this isn't Scrapyard Wars rules regarding anonymous sales. Makes the jump to the £10k range instantly, as well as getting Mike's MG itch out of the way early.
The Ford KA is a nice car. Had a black S reg, with no power steering, for 3 months, the hottest 3 months of the year back in 2009. Remember that bit where I said it was black? You cooked as soon as the fans stopped blowing. Was a nice little go kart even with the only 60hp (they made it 70hp about 2003 and made power steering the norm to boot), nice fun car. The issues? Well, for starters, I got the car in exchange for a bicycle. Most of the car was filler, especially around the fuel cap. I don't turn my nose at the KA, but sadly its a 90's Ford and extremely easy to rust. Even heard of one owner being told to get rid of it after its first MOT as the sills were already going....

Another great video lads. Just one remark tho. When you say "a 250 pound budget" why do you not include the service costs? I mean, oil and a filter van easily run you 50 pounds, brake fluid around 10 for a can and spray paint will also be around 10 pounds per can.
