Where are fuses in BMW 1-Series (E81 E82 E87 E88 fusebox location)

  • Fusebox in BMW 1-Series (E81, E82, E87, E88) is located deep under the dashboard. You need to release the glove compartment to access fuses in your BMW car.
    Checking fuses is one of the first diagnostic procedures when troubleshooting electric issues in your vehicle.
    Check out this tutorial and learn how to do it in your vehicle.

    I took another stab it, using a flashlight and small mirror to study what was going on exactly. The end of the damper rod has a flat piece, through which a tiny hinge rod passes, which engages with the inner face of the door, i.e., the part covered with fuzz. Immediately behind the bottom of the rod, where you can't see unless you have a tiny mirror on a handle and a flashlight, there is a small bump on the inner face of the door. To either side of this bump, there are two slits, parallel to each other, intended to give the bump the flexibility needed for it to yield to the flat end of the rod, which has rounded corners.
    I tried to depress that bump, but no matter how I went at it, I couldn't get the end of the damper rod to release from the inner face of the door. In my collection of screwdrivers I found the one that is really, really skinny and really, really long. Nearly a foot long not counting the handle, and the width of the blade about the same as the width of the flat piece at the end of the damper rod. The blade width was small enough for it to fit into the same space, in the inner face of the door, that the flat end of the rod fits into. I pressed the tip of the screwdriver down into that space, and still had to apply considerable force before the end of the rod popped out. Once it was out, I concluded that the two slits should have been an inch or two longer (even though it loosened up somewhat after I repeatedly engaged it and released several times).
    I experimented to see if the same method will work with a shorter screwdriver. It will, but the screwdriver has to be either long enough or not too long. If it is in between, the handle of the screwdriver will collide with the edge of the dashboard immediately above the upper edge of the glove box door. The screwdriver needs to be either short enough to avoid this, or else long for the handle to locate above that part of the dashboard. The important thing is that the blade width (at the widest part of the blade) has to be no greater than the width of the flat part at the end of the damper rod, in order that it will fit into that tiny gap without tearing up the inner face of the door.
    Once the damper rod has disengaged, it is still necessary to depress the catches at both sides of the box. This is well is tricky. I found that it is necessary to do both sides simultaneously, i.e., if you try to release first one side and expect it to stay while you do the other side, it probably will not work. You need a flashlight here, to see what it is exactly that you're trying to do. On the left side in particular, the side toward the driver, you can potentially get your finger in the wrong place and get it trapped, and this can potentially result in a serious injury to your finger. To return the box after you're done, you have to again press in on the catch on the side opposite from the driver, but once you've done that, it should go in the rest of the way without having to press the catch on the other side.
    I think this design is terribly stupid. It was stupid to locate the fuse box behind the glove box, and the stupidity was compounded by the inordinate difficulty in getting the glove box out of the way so that you can see the fuses. To change a fuse, it will additionally be necessary to remove the interior body panel below the glove box, and to do that, you need a Torx screwdriver the correct size, and you need a trim removal tool or very small screwdriver to get it off. You lower the glove box so that you can see what you're doing, but it would be nearly impossible to reach through that little opening and pull out a fuse. Removing that lower panel allows you to get at the fuses with one of your hands, which is made clumsier by the fact that the lowered glove box is now in your way. All in it becomes a job for the service department at the dealership to replace a fuse.
    The stupidity of this ranks right up there with putting the battery in a trunk that can only be opened with an electrical lock that won't work if the battery is dead or disconnected. If you disconnect the battery and close the trunk lid, the lock will engage, mechanically, but won't disengage without battery power to the lock. You have to apply +12VDC to the access point in the engine compartment. Earlier models had the type of trunk lock where you could use your physical (mechanical) key, the same one you use to lock and unlock the glove box. But for some model years, this lock was replaced with a lock that can only be operated electrically. And while it might be possible to access the emergency release inside the trunk on coupe models with fold-down seats, forget about this if you have the convertible.

    When you say full scan with diagnostic interface, what does that mean in layman terms?

    • @mrfixpl
      @mrfixpl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you want to do it yourself, at same point you'll find some universal bluetooth OBD2 scanner. Those things are cheap (~$5) but have very limited functionality. All of those devices can do the same thing since all are based on ELM327 chip. You can only clear check engine light, read and clear codes from ECU (but not always all codes) and check some live data from engine.
      What you CAN'T do with it is connect to other modules in your car (ABS, airbags, ESP, radio, navigation, comfort, convenience, gearbox...). You also CAN'T change anything in the car (new features), code new parts (injectors, immobilizers, battery), fix anything (DPF regeneration, EGR adaptation).
      So you're looking for a diagnostic interface dedicated for BMW cars OR a garage that have one. I believe that the software that goes with this dedicated BMW diagnostic interface is called INPA.

      I'm assuming that your radio module is coded correctly and you can switch to AUX but no sound comes from the speakers.

    Hi I am having some serious issues and I can't seem to figure it out on my 2012 bmw 128i e88 N51 motor. Some of my fuses in my fuse box is not working I check the envelop and verify that some of the fuses are the big ones in there (3) 40A and (1) 60A and many others sporatically in the Fuse box that is not working, but good fuses. My car is overheating. I changed the thermostat and check the water pump all seems ok. My questions is why the fuses in the fuse box doesn't light up with the tester but the fuses are good when I test with the fuse tester. And another main issue concern is the fuse diagram states that some of the fuse slots should have fuses but when I checked there were many fuses missing I tried and put as many fuses base on the diagram on the fuse envelope but still not fix for me. If what i did was wrong, how do I know which fuse should be installed in the fuse box since I when and add more fuses to the fuse box? Will it cause any more problems to have the additional fuses installed or should they be removed as only what should be there in the fuse box??? Oh! and just to let you know that the car was crashed and fix so everything is back to where it should be normal. Please Help and any advise is welcome. thank you so so much.

    Thanks for this very helpful video. I have a 2010 135i, that I bought a few months ago. I was aware of the location of the fuse box, possibly having read of it in the owner's manual, and I found that the damper/link on the left side was disconnected. So I connected it, which in retrospect was dumb, because now I can't get it to release. I'm wondering if there is a special technique that you use, and if so, if you could describe it in detail. In the video, you appear to press on the front of the damper, on the side facing you, before reaching around the back. Is there something there that you need to depress, or did you simply do that as a first try? Thanks!

    • @mrfixpl
      @mrfixpl  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a simple as "Press and it will pop out at some point" :)
      Best if your cars interior is warm, to minimize the risk of plastic snapping in half.

    • @tombarber8013
      @tombarber8013 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it was nowhere near that simple. I explained in considerable detail in my other comment, two hours after the one you replied to. For whatever reason TH-cam is showing it below this one. I was not able to confirm, but it appears that the bump in the rear face of the glove box cover has a hard rubber support under it, fixed to the front face, where there might be an airbag. I was not able to confirm this because I couldn't see in that little space at all, even using a tiny mirror and flashlight. But I did try to extend the slits in the rear face, which appear to enable the area with the bump to bend and yield to the bottom end of the damper rod. But even with the slits lengthened, it made almost no difference in the difficulty in getting the damper rod to move beyond the bump. I had already had more of this very bad design than I wanted, so I ended up using a flat file to reduce the amount of metal on the lower end of the damper rod, i.e., the distance from the tiny pivot rod to the bottom of the damper rod. I filed in down all around the bottom and around the rounded surfaces of the lower end of the damper rod. I didn't have to take off very much to achieve a significant reduction in the amount of effort needed to engage and disengage the damper rod. And I rounded it and smoothed it over all nicely. From now on I will keep a small narrow-bladed screwdriver in the glove box along with a #20 Torx screwdriver. The small screwdriver is both the ideal tool for disengaging the damper rod, and also the ideal tool for pulling the center pin from the push-pin that you have to remove to remove the interior panel immediately below the glove box. And there are two Torx screws holding that panel as well, ergo the Torx screwdriver. I couldn't fathom trying to actually swap a fuse by reaching through the little opening behind the glove box. You have to drop the glove box so that you can see what you are doing, but the only way to get your hand in there to swap a fuse is by removing that small interior panel immediately below the glove box.

    hi mr fix. i recently bought an e87 and when i checked the fuse compartment, there were so many that were missing (at least half!). Do you think the previous seller has done this to cover up faults in the car? is this even possible?

    • @mrfixpl
      @mrfixpl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Best if you check which ones are missing (what components use them), then check if that's not optional equipment not installed in your car.

    • @slengoslengaw8510
      @slengoslengaw8510 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mr-fix I'm new to this so please bare with me.
      Say for example on the card, it mentiones that there should be 5 fuses for DDE which looks like a coiled wire. This isn't an optional module I think because it's part of the ignition. so when I checked the fuses installed, I only found 1 out 5 ! What do you think?
      Is there a way to test/ find out which modules are optional?

    • @mrfixpl
      @mrfixpl  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all: simply removing fuses to power down some modules will not hide fault codes but cause them. If you car is running fine, you have no warning messages and all of the cars equipment works, then everything should be OK.
      If you want to be extra safe, you can scan your car with diagnostic interface designed for BMW cars (simple universal scanners connect only to ECU and not other modules in cars) to look for fault codes about permanently lost communication between modules.
