I am more mad about the loss of command squads and the talon master than the nerfs. The 40k meta is fluid, the power of armies changes every year but Games Workshop will never 'un-legends' units. I'm angry that my hours of kit bashing and painting custom landspeaders has gone to waste

I sold my entire DA army 3 weeks ago just because I was never going to get to paint all of it. As my third 40k army, I was drowning in unpainted first chapter plastic, and with even more new models coming out, I had to make the VERY tough decision to let it go instead of drown myself in more. In hindsight now...best pre-emptive decision I've made all year, lol. Feel bad for my DA homies tho...😔

Honestly, at the time it felt like an L because I do love dark angels, but 3x 40k armies and 3x AoS armies was getting to be too much, so one of each had to go and someone made me a really good offer on my dark angels. Probably because he was excited to get into them ahead of the new codex & models. Poor guy, lol. Especially since the 10x new model terminators included in the army I sold were kitbashed as the command squad...and there was definitely a sweet Talonmaster in there too
The GW modeling team did an amazing job on true scale terminators, Deathwing Knights, IC Companions, and The Lion. Truly their work is amazing. The current GW rules team is a bunch of incompetent numpties. This Codex is the most garbage book I've seen in 30 years of playing this game. 0/10 needs a full re-write.
Also, anyone else get the feeling that the only reason that they're making Ravenwing good is so they can sell the old models from their stock right before they do a Ravenwing range refresh? At which point they'll probably pull the rug again and delete command squads etc. that you've put so much work into. No thanks.

I appreciate this video! As soon I receive my Deathwing box, I will have plenty of deathwing bodies. I plan to play strategically and as a master tactician, like the Lion himself. The nerfs to our primarch seem unnecessary, but I shall remain optimistic and have fun! Because that is the main point of the game!
I think it would be fun to play the index data sheets with the new rules and detatchments. I imagine most dark angels will HAVE to do this. Knights being limited to 5 still and so on but just play with the old profiles and stuff and the old lion and it would be fun I bet.
Took me almost 10 months to get my hands on a Lion miniature and before I even get him painted, they de-fang him. I'm heartbroken; he was fine as he was - a slight drop in points and I think you would have seen him a lot more.
350 for any of the current loyalist primarchs is absolute garbage. Especially when you have something like the night bringer running around at 275. Lone Operative is not worth 75-100ps

I haven't been this disappointed with a DA codex since Jervis wrote the 5th edition. The Nerfs, the refusal to upgrade Azarael, and not allowing the best Terminators in the Imperium to use Close Combat Weapons with the heavy weapons just makes the Deathwing like any random old space marine army.
37:38 funny because i looked at these and i immidiately thought i will stick to gladius as it is a better detachment for terminators. Or vanguard. Or ironstorm.

I'm glad that you have a similar view as I do of the codex. The two new detachments look interesting, it's weird the index detachment wasn't changed positively, the lost units are a big shame and the downgrades to a lot of units seem a bit much and will most likely require fielding a lot of cheaper-pointed models in detachments that I thought would represent more elite (low model count) forces.
Bummed, but I’ve learned my lesson. I won’t ever start a new army until the codex is out. My own fault for jumping the gun. At least I will enjoy painting the models 🙂

Thank you dude, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I would suggest keeping the terrain nice and simple to begin with, just build something equivalent to a ruin and keep it to 1 or 2 pieces, to begin with. Hope that helps :)
Justifiable to make DWK only groups of 5. They are expensive as hell loads of tanky units but fuck dark angels. *eyeroll* whole codex is a nerf and we worried DWKs dont just melt before everyone else. Jeeeeeeez

Asmodai got a completely updated attack profile but otherwise, it does seem like a kick in the teeth overall. Will have to see the points values to decide. I know the book was written before the edition launched but it's wild to think they had the power level of the faction so terribly wrong in their own minds.
How does the deathwing key word get assigned to a unit from a named character like Belial. I have a unit of assault terminators and if Belial leads them they get the deathwing keyword?
I’m going to play some fluffy games with The Lion and his Deathwing friends. If they make the points cheap enough I might even take it to a GT for fun.
Company of hunters has many movement tricks ... but not easy to see, how they will make damage with the mounted ones ....to play many of the mounted ones, they should have received weapons dealing damage. No use, being the first and throwing a lot of nothing at the the enemy ... the mounted models are too expensive to bring them in in big numbers and run into the middle of the enemy. So, my opinion ... this is a wannabe ravenwing, that will turn out as the green wing thing. This codex is a shame, so many chances missed, and basically just nerves. Comapare it to necrons ... how many ohs and ahs shining in that codex ... but here, well some useably moving tricks, not one now great unit rising, but iconic terminator bricks gone, damage reductions everywhere etc... I am disapointed... (I do not have the Lion, and now I will never have, also I do not see the reason, why I would need new units, which can not do anything different than others.... maybe even worse (though the look great).

Its pretty simple guys, buy a 5th edition rule book, and a 5th edition codex and play the game the way its supposed to be played I also need you guys to explain to me how any of these changes are understandable? Unless they nerf every other faction in the game
I’m simply not using this garbage book. It’s a typical lazy, tone deaf effort you get from GW rules. I’m using the index and ignoring this trash. Deleting units that still have models for sale is an absolute slap in the face of the customer. There is absolutely no justifiable reason to nerf Lion. I’m not doing it. No one I play with will care.

@@rickkcir2151 they're paying for the launch of 9th when deathwing was a bit much (as every codex was in 9th) and apparently they just sort of gave up on ravenwing until they make new models for it in 11th edition clearly. This will be known as the edition that dark angels died and they will come back strong in 11th but if the models sell gw will not bother with fixing them now. They literally probably only look at sales tp determine and win rates that are skewed by persons running dark angels in NON dark angel detatchments lol

Idk guys, good points on some things but others idk... You talked about the 10 man knight squads being to much due to the amount of wounds and the -1 damage, but for the points they costed I thought I was totally in line, they have no guns, can only do harm in melee, and an amount to almost a third of your army cost with a leader .. the fact is, this codex has been the worse blunder in GW history, since I have been playing anyway. Everyone of our premier units lost their flavor and soul, and got nerfed so much that even massive points cuts would still make them take or leave. All of our characters are bland and boring on the best of days. I'm not sure what happened here but is mind boggling

I hate GW for this! At this point, I'm having a hard time deciding if it's worth continuing spending money on a game they obviously don't play themselves. If ever there was heresy. Well, this is it.
My only real issue with the ravenwing detachment is I dont want to buy first born scale models(command squad/black knights) knowing full well they are gonna get sent to legends(most likely) if not by the end of 10th the beginning of 11th. They could of released new models already instead.
They will be sent to legends in 11th edition and the terminator command squad will return in 11th edition as well. Landspeeder Vengeance and dark shroud will be sent to legends too. The writing is on the wall.

@@Brumuder the uncomfortable truth is that they could just leave older models in the game and release new ones. So everyone wins. A billion dollar company can support a few old iconic models and units so we shouldn't pretend like they couldn't right. They don't have to continue to produce them, thats besides the point really isn't it. What the do is the definition of using match play tournament play as a means to ensure persons must buy new models every time they want to play at a hobby shop.
I cant see them removing the older ravenwing bikes without replacing them with new models or an upgrade kit for outriders tbh. Thats just me though. That being said. I am hesitant to buy them right now as I believe its likely to happen.
@@cullenasaro2229 we are pretty much there, the new upgrade spru has an upgrade for outriders (the ravenwing hussar thingy that goes on the back of the bikes)
The other nerf is that the Ravenwing keyword doesn’t give any kind of ‘jink’ ability. The Ravenwing units get a 5++ but outriders don’t get it when they become Ravenwing for example.
It sucks to see basically all nerfs, but I’m excited to try Ezekiel on the Inner Circle Companions. Give them extra attacks and an invuln. That and the synergy of Deathwing with hellblasters from led characters.
I totally agree about the Inner Circle Task Force rule only affecting Infantry. They should have allowed *all* Deathwing models +1 to hit on the vowed objective. It would have made it strong enough to rival the premiere Detachments of Gladius, Vanguard, and Ironstorm!
I'm very confused as to why it looks like the Chaplain on Bike can't lead the Ravenwing Command Squad anymore. Seems like such an unnecessary change, hopefully he can lead a 6 man squad of Black Knights still but I'm going to seriously miss the narthecium, +1 to advance/charge and the +1 OC :/ Looks like GW wrote this book many months before 10th came out...

At this point I’m waiting for them to drop Emperors Children later in the year. I’ll still collect DA, cause they’re my favorite SM chapter. But in far more limited capacity. Save some money for when GW drops Fulgrim and his boys.
Those Inner Circle Companions Sweep/Strike rule is terribly written… The Strike needs more AP for sure, and Sustained Hits with only 4 initial Attacks is pretty lame, just don’t bother with the Sustained Hits and increase the base Attacks at that point…
This codex is so weak compared to the others that it makes me wonder what the next balance update is going to be like... This is either a rushed, unfinished codex or there are a lot of nerfs coming...
Aside from all the nerfs, I love the company of hunters. Field three units of Ravenwing Command Squad within three Ravenwing Knights. One Squad gets Sammael, one a Chaplain on bike with run/fall back and charge, the last Chaplain on bike with 9" scout, behind them a Darkshroud, with Ballistus and Scouts in the back. Gonna see how it plays, but they are pretty fast and can even beat down weakened Knights and any kind of monsters with that charge, due to the Ravenwing Knights rule.

Late to the game, but why are the Dark Angels Characters portrayed as tactically inflexible, these are dudes who wear power armour but think nothing of donning terminator suits and joining the deathwing. The whole point of Inner Circle is to show how they adapt to circumstances. GW have struggled to convey the complexity of the first legion for decades, then the buggers give us DA Sternguards (that don't actually exist.) Please stop messing with the lore of the first legion GW.
What a joke.. ive got about 4k of dark angels. JUST ORDERED LION this week. Finallty. Finally had the money, finally available. Disgusting, unnecessary, baseless nerfs.
The inner circle companions are so completely underwhelming. Top secret master swordsmen even the chapter master knows nothing about. Superlative warriors. Just wow. I'd expect: 4invuln, 2s to hit, and precision negation, 5fnp. Deep strike would also make sense.
All this doomsaying about how the "dark angels got nerfed, blah blah blah..." is nothing new to me since ive been playing off and on since 2nd edition and GW does this stuff ALL THE TIME. Removing old units is nothing new to me since they see popularity of models wane over time and when they dont sell anymore, they discontinue them. I do agree however that nerfing the lion was a bit strange and removing the DW Command Squad, Talonmaster and Strikemaster while keeping the RW Command Squad was weird as well, but i think the reason why they did that was due to them becoming more in line with the SM Codex they released last year for 10th and GW saw those as potentional game breakers due to how they were handled in 9th, which btw i didnt play but those are just my thoughts on the matter. Also i see more nerfs comming for other armies as well, the codexs that were released so far have had some major nerfs so i expect the other armies to follow suite. So ill roll with the punches and move on with my life and enjoy the game. Also this is JUST A GAME PEOPLE!! Roll with it and move on with your lives and stop acting like its the end of world for gods sake. Go outside for once and smell the fresh air...
This book is a literal waste of money from the community and time from GW. Also, correction on DWTs. Their sergeant has to take a power sword so their damage output is worse than regular Terminators. So you're paying extra for a downgrade. The ignores modifiers is so rare to happen it will never out DPS the loss from not having a 5th power fist. On top of that, GW needs to pick a lane. Either DWK are rare more elite and do damage 3 which makes sense for an over costed, slow, melee only unit, or they need to stay in blocks of 10 if you're going to nerf their damage to Bladeguard Vet levels. This "better player experience" is just your opponent experiencing them doing no damage AND dying faster. Feels real good to play with that as a Dark Angels player. We're gonna be Ork levels of horde in a few months with the points drops needed to actually make this book work. The Queen is rolling in her grave over this GW. May your tea be moldy and kettle never boil.
I just wish I were excited about anything in the new codex. I love the new models, but everything just got worse. Points depending it might still be good/competitive, but I won't be as excited about the fun things.

Chaos Marines don't have their Codex yet right? Going by the first 2/3 of your comment, maybe you should wait ^^ EDIT: I all but guarantee the sky will be falling and CSM players will be crying nerf when the Codex arrives.
Plus I still love the 1st Company marine detachment as you can stack to -2 on Deathwing knights and completely fits with only 5 man units now! And you need the +1 hit stratergem for your combat thunderhammer Deathwing terminators as the +1 wound from Vowed objective won’t matter if you don’t even hit with them for me personally.

Helo everyone! Just a question here. In the inner circle task force detachment, if I put a captain/chaplain with jump pack in a vanguard vet squad, is the captain/chaplain get the deathwing keyword? In that case I can use the strats on them right?
Have you seen the updated errata for the DA. They appear to address/correct the vast majority of the issues you raised, including the return of several units missing from the Codex.
I’ve got bad news for you boss. That’s for the index, not the codex. They won’t put out errata for the codex until it officially drops this spring. I promise the deleted units will stay deleted.

I do find it odd, though, that a book that would've been printed in Nov/Dec (if not further back) takes precedence over an errata that was released 13 days ago, and is easy to edit change, especially compared to a book. Why wouldn't the errata match the codex if that is what the rule is gonna be. Just doesn't make sense.

I know the book was written before the edition launched but it's wild to think they had the power level of the faction so terribly wrong in their own minds.
How does the deathwing key word get assigned to a unit from a named character like Belial. I have a unit of assault terminators and if Belial leads them they get the deathwing keyword?
Yes because a unit gains all keywords from any of the models

Company of hunters has many movement tricks ... but not easy to see, how they will make damage with the mounted ones ....to play many of the mounted ones, they should have received weapons dealing damage. No use, being the first and throwing a lot of nothing at the the enemy ... the mounted models are too expensive to bring them in in big numbers and run into the middle of the enemy. So, my opinion ... this is a wannabe ravenwing, that will turn out as the green wing thing.
This codex is a shame, so many chances missed, and basically just nerves. Comapare it to necrons ... how many ohs and ahs shining in that codex ... but here, well some useably moving tricks, not one now great unit rising, but iconic terminator bricks gone, damage reductions everywhere etc... I am disapointed... (I do not have the Lion, and now I will never have, also I do not see the reason, why I would need new units, which can not do anything different than others.... maybe even worse (though the look great).
Yeah. Unforgiven taskforce is even more poop. Deathwing terminators lost almost all their modeling flavor. But bummed out

I’m simply not using this garbage book. It’s a typical lazy, tone deaf effort you get from GW rules. I’m using the index and ignoring this trash. Deleting units that still have models for sale is an absolute slap in the face of the customer. There is absolutely no justifiable reason to nerf Lion. I’m not doing it. No one I play with will care.

Hate Primaris so much. Literally killed the Lore now all the fun individual units in the game.... 10th is utter trash....
It didn't have to be that way though, could've still had unique units in primaris scale, it's more about GW wanting to make money through specialised units rather than versatile units

Why is anyone surprised about the nerf to maces? GW stated 10th ed was to be less killy. Units are to survive and last longer.
Deathwing Knights are almost 50% more expensive than TH/SS terminators and their weapons are 50% worse.

The book was written a long time ago and it shows. None of it is justified, they just planned for a different landscape. And they were wrong about it.

@@rickkcir2151 they're paying for the launch of 9th when deathwing was a bit much (as every codex was in 9th) and apparently they just sort of gave up on ravenwing until they make new models for it in 11th edition clearly. This will be known as the edition that dark angels died and they will come back strong in 11th but if the models sell gw will not bother with fixing them now. They literally probably only look at sales tp determine and win rates that are skewed by persons running dark angels in NON dark angel detatchments lol

These unwanted and unneeded nerfs basically killed any motivation I had to buy and build DA as my first 40K army. Guess I'll just stick to YT lore vids.
I have begun gathering and painting a DA army, and with the nerf hammer hitting like a sledgehammer, I'm questioning my decision to do so.
Rules are temporary. Models are forever. Don’t build armies because the rules are good/bad.

Idk guys, good points on some things but others idk... You talked about the 10 man knight squads being to much due to the amount of wounds and the -1 damage, but for the points they costed I thought I was totally in line, they have no guns, can only do harm in melee, and an amount to almost a third of your army cost with a leader .. the fact is, this codex has been the worse blunder in GW history, since I have been playing anyway. Everyone of our premier units lost their flavor and soul, and got nerfed so much that even massive points cuts would still make them take or leave. All of our characters are bland and boring on the best of days. I'm not sure what happened here but is mind boggling
have to agree with everything you say, people always talk about how tough deathwing knights are to kill. but i played nids the other day 2 exocrines and a hivetyrant just evaporated the squad, so its not that hard.

I hate GW for this! At this point, I'm having a hard time deciding if it's worth continuing spending money on a game they obviously don't play themselves. If ever there was heresy. Well, this is it.
My only real issue with the ravenwing detachment is I dont want to buy first born scale models(command squad/black knights) knowing full well they are gonna get sent to legends(most likely) if not by the end of 10th the beginning of 11th. They could of released new models already instead.
They will be sent to legends in 11th edition and the terminator command squad will return in 11th edition as well. Landspeeder Vengeance and dark shroud will be sent to legends too. The writing is on the wall.

@@Brumuder the uncomfortable truth is that they could just leave older models in the game and release new ones. So everyone wins. A billion dollar company can support a few old iconic models and units so we shouldn't pretend like they couldn't right. They don't have to continue to produce them, thats besides the point really isn't it. What the do is the definition of using match play tournament play as a means to ensure persons must buy new models every time they want to play at a hobby shop.
I cant see them removing the older ravenwing bikes without replacing them with new models or an upgrade kit for outriders tbh. Thats just me though. That being said. I am hesitant to buy them right now as I believe its likely to happen.
@@cullenasaro2229 we are pretty much there, the new upgrade spru has an upgrade for outriders (the ravenwing hussar thingy that goes on the back of the bikes)

The other nerf is that the Ravenwing keyword doesn’t give any kind of ‘jink’ ability. The Ravenwing units get a 5++ but outriders don’t get it when they become Ravenwing for example.
It sucks to see basically all nerfs, but I’m excited to try Ezekiel on the Inner Circle Companions. Give them extra attacks and an invuln. That and the synergy of Deathwing with hellblasters from led characters.

Dumping unique units into legends without giving any new ones is terrible design
It does feel like the wrong characters have the wrong abilities. Swap Asmodai and Belial's ability sets and they'd work better.
I totally agree about the Inner Circle Task Force rule only affecting Infantry. They should have allowed *all* Deathwing models +1 to hit on the vowed objective. It would have made it strong enough to rival the premiere Detachments of Gladius, Vanguard, and Ironstorm!
I'm very confused as to why it looks like the Chaplain on Bike can't lead the Ravenwing Command Squad anymore. Seems like such an unnecessary change, hopefully he can lead a 6 man squad of Black Knights still but I'm going to seriously miss the narthecium, +1 to advance/charge and the +1 OC :/ Looks like GW wrote this book many months before 10th came out...
Because the RCS is a character unit itself.

At this point I’m waiting for them to drop Emperors Children later in the year. I’ll still collect DA, cause they’re my favorite SM chapter. But in far more limited capacity. Save some money for when GW drops Fulgrim and his boys.

I don't think the inner circle task force is good for deathwing. Gladius still looks better for them, more mobility, more damage, more flexibility

Those Inner Circle Companions Sweep/Strike rule is terribly written… The Strike needs more AP for sure, and Sustained Hits with only 4 initial Attacks is pretty lame, just don’t bother with the Sustained Hits and increase the base Attacks at that point…
Don't bother with inner circle companions.... just take blade guard.
This codex is so weak compared to the others that it makes me wonder what the next balance update is going to be like... This is either a rushed, unfinished codex or there are a lot of nerfs coming...
Aside from all the nerfs, I love the company of hunters. Field three units of Ravenwing Command Squad within three Ravenwing Knights. One Squad gets Sammael, one a Chaplain on bike with run/fall back and charge, the last Chaplain on bike with 9" scout, behind them a Darkshroud, with Ballistus and Scouts in the back. Gonna see how it plays, but they are pretty fast and can even beat down weakened Knights and any kind of monsters with that charge, due to the Ravenwing Knights rule.

Late to the game, but why are the Dark Angels Characters portrayed as tactically inflexible, these are dudes who wear power armour but think nothing of donning terminator suits and joining the deathwing. The whole point of Inner Circle is to show how they adapt to circumstances. GW have struggled to convey the complexity of the first legion for decades, then the buggers give us DA Sternguards (that don't actually exist.)
Please stop messing with the lore of the first legion GW.
What a joke.. ive got about 4k of dark angels. JUST ORDERED LION this week. Finallty. Finally had the money, finally available. Disgusting, unnecessary, baseless nerfs.
The inner circle companions are so completely underwhelming. Top secret master swordsmen even the chapter master knows nothing about. Superlative warriors. Just wow. I'd expect: 4invuln, 2s to hit, and precision negation, 5fnp. Deep strike would also make sense.
All this doomsaying about how the "dark angels got nerfed, blah blah blah..." is nothing new to me since ive been playing off and on since 2nd edition and GW does this stuff ALL THE TIME. Removing old units is nothing new to me since they see popularity of models wane over time and when they dont sell anymore, they discontinue them.
I do agree however that nerfing the lion was a bit strange and removing the DW Command Squad, Talonmaster and Strikemaster while keeping the RW Command Squad was weird as well, but i think the reason why they did that was due to them becoming more in line with the SM Codex they released last year for 10th and GW saw those as potentional game breakers due to how they were handled in 9th, which btw i didnt play but those are just my thoughts on the matter. Also i see more nerfs comming for other armies as well, the codexs that were released so far have had some major nerfs so i expect the other armies to follow suite.
So ill roll with the punches and move on with my life and enjoy the game. Also this is JUST A GAME PEOPLE!! Roll with it and move on with your lives and stop acting like its the end of world for gods sake. Go outside for once and smell the fresh air...
This book is a literal waste of money from the community and time from GW. Also, correction on DWTs. Their sergeant has to take a power sword so their damage output is worse than regular Terminators. So you're paying extra for a downgrade. The ignores modifiers is so rare to happen it will never out DPS the loss from not having a 5th power fist. On top of that, GW needs to pick a lane. Either DWK are rare more elite and do damage 3 which makes sense for an over costed, slow, melee only unit, or they need to stay in blocks of 10 if you're going to nerf their damage to Bladeguard Vet levels. This "better player experience" is just your opponent experiencing them doing no damage AND dying faster. Feels real good to play with that as a Dark Angels player. We're gonna be Ork levels of horde in a few months with the points drops needed to actually make this book work. The Queen is rolling in her grave over this GW. May your tea be moldy and kettle never boil.

Plus I still love the 1st Company marine detachment as you can stack to -2 on Deathwing knights and completely fits with only 5 man units now! And you need the +1 hit stratergem for your combat thunderhammer Deathwing terminators as the +1 wound from Vowed objective won’t matter if you don’t even hit with them for me personally.

Helo everyone! Just a question here. In the inner circle task force detachment, if I put a captain/chaplain with jump pack in a vanguard vet squad, is the captain/chaplain get the deathwing keyword? In that case I can use the strats on them right?

Have you seen the updated errata for the DA. They appear to address/correct the vast majority of the issues you raised, including the return of several units missing from the Codex.

I do find it odd, though, that a book that would've been printed in Nov/Dec (if not further back) takes precedence over an errata that was released 13 days ago, and is easy to edit change, especially compared to a book. Why wouldn't the errata match the codex if that is what the rule is gonna be. Just doesn't make sense.
