    You're one the most honorable mechanic i've ever seen. I have never seen anyone show so much love for a car. I would have given up if i found out the frame was bent, but you kept going. I have been sitting here on this night for about 2 hours, watching all of these series of videos learning so much about motors, trans, etc. I thank you very much for these videos. Even though I don't know you, I've built so much respect for you. Keep up the great work bro.

    If you still have the old mass air flow, remove the sensor from the housing, pry the plastic cover on the top of the sensor off and you will find the issue. the 3 or 4 pins that hook a right angle into the board of the sensors solder points break loose. re solder the points back on and cover the sensor back up..... good to go!!!! great at home build, keep up the good work!

    Hey man been watching your videos now for a week or so, I gotta say one of the best 240 build series I have seen. I am in the middle of a build myself just took a break because I moved away from home for a few years. It's awesome to see someone take pride in a 240, especially a drift car! Lol keep it up! Looking forward to watching more episodes!

    @Cha Flo, I'm pretty positive I already sent a message to you about this a while ago when you left your first comment right? Because as of right now and before, I can't reply to your comment. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with your Google+ account or something.
    If you see this please reply though.
    The paint is holding up great. Not chipping off, not faded, and pretty durable. It only looks a little less gloss then when I first painted it in Episode 5, but I'm pretty sure that's because I just painted the car and the paint supposedly takes about 2 weeks to fully dry. For the price though, I would definitely say it's better than running rattle can, mismatched paint. And if you get a scratch etc. you can easily respray for cheap!
    Let me know if you read this comment.

I'm 15 years old and I am learning so much by just watch your videos...I love the 240sx style but my goal right now believe it or not I'm going for a wrx or a Lancer Ralliart for my first car (since they're the mid range models I can somewhat trick my parents and I can still tune and learn but they won't know that it's a crazy performance vehicle) anyway man I love your videos and this series is amazing! Everytime I check my filter and have to clean and reoil it, I use some electronics cleaner to clean the MAF. In fact, I've seen some clean them to make a change in the idle, but anyway just spray the cleaner maybe a 100 miles after re-oiling and make sure to do multiple full throttle runs to really suck any excess oil off the filter.

    16:00 on automotive work you should always crimp not solder but understanding the car and the situation with the wires/connectors its forgivable just if you ever have time go back and change it. btw love the build, just your struggle of doing things proper is entertaining let alone the car itself keep up the good work! :D

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! And yea I know haha, this is going to be a good test though of the tale of solder vs crimping. My dad thinks it will be fine because of the temperature needed to melt the solder, so like I said, it should be a good test hahahh.

    • @warmowed
      @warmowed 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol yea in that situation I think I would do the same, just make sure to keep it away from headers and make sure it doesn't vibrate too much and you should be fine. its cool that an uploader responds, can we get an eta for the next episode?Also the paint looks rad at first I didnt think I'd like it but it really suits the car well and is much cooler and unique than just painting it flat black like most people do.

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      warmowed Yea if it was a wire going near the header then I wouldn't have soldered, but I think it should be fine near the intake manifold.
      Hahah I always found it annoying when the uploader never responds so I try to always reply :)
      Eta is hopefully by the end of the week. I've just been busy and changed to a new video editing program so it's been pretty hard to get the video done.
      Glad you like it! Yea idk why so many people do that, when you can get much better results with just a little more effort.

    Your build series is one of my top favorite on TH-cam . I would say it is the best because you have respect for the car and you take a poor molested car the a 16yr ricer prob beat up. And gave it a new and better life and did some proper work. Amazing job man. Oh and what year is it. I plain on building one after I'm done building my 2002 musyang GT but with my 240 I think I might add fender flares and a trunk lid undecided yet.

    Are you going to pull all the interior out and put bucket seats in, and are you going to put a twist turn nob in? Great vid im also going to build one in the next few months :)

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trunk is already stripped, but I don't plan to strip anymore of the interior cause I drive the car to the track 160 miles round trip. So without the carpet/door panels/stereo/center console the drive would be pretty miserable especially with the increase in heat and drone haha. Bucket seats of course aren't out of the question ;)
      Drift knob was already on the car when I bought it and you can see it Episode 1. Pretty simple and effective mod for sure.
      Sounds like fun :)

    Hey I'm just wondering if you're an actual mechanic or do you work on the car with your mechanic friends? I know for a fact that my R32 Skyline has plenty of issues but I don't know how to spot them and fix them like you seem to be able to. If I was able to spot the problems I could then research and fix them but I don't know enough to find the issues in the first place.
    Awesome series btw and it's helping with my car a lot, opening my eyes to plenty of things to look for. Cheers!

      Just work on cars by myself and with my dad if he's free. No one really does any work on the car besides me haha.
      Yea I've just learned from reading on forums and watching TH-cam videos over the years. Basically anything I don't know I look up and try to research. Then after awhile you end up knowing quite a lot from just reading up :)
      Thanks!

  • @anon_e34
    @anon_e34 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I might be commenting way too late, but I hope someone reads this. Why do you get a 60 degree thermostat? Isn't that a way too low temperature? We've always been taught not to drive hard until it reaches operating temperature of 80-90 degrees because there's a lot of friction inside the engine when it hasn't warmed up etc. etc.

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The car is really only driven on the track. And the track is in the middle of a desert and usually reaches a temp of 100+ F. If you have a street driven car then this isn't ideal. But for a car that's majority used on the track and where temps are always climbing and reaching the upper limits of the cooling system then having a low temp thermostat is great.

  • @cyberblade6669

    mass air flow senser cleaner 5 bucks same IACV only buy new parts if you cant fix the ones you got

  • @KireFlu
    @KireFlu 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why have the stock airfilter? It takes alot more space and it isn't dangerous with a bolt-on cone filter. It doesn't suck in THAT much gunk

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most aftermarket filters that clean well and increase air flow use oiled filters. Oiled filters kill MAF's, which is the reason I had to replace mine, so that takes away oiled filters from being a possibility. The other alternative is an oil-less filter which the only way it will increase flow is by allowing more particulate through the system. Now if I were driving on the street this probably wouldn't be an issue. However I track my car, and the two tracks that I go to the most have dirt around the track. So when I spin out or go off track, there's a plume of dust/dirt that gets tossed up. Now that much dirt mixed with a sub-par filter it's a lot of gunk that will get through the intake. So having either filter option doesn't work out. Not only that, but why even waste the money and risk of running it, for the maybe 1 extra hp that won't even be noticeable?

    • @KireFlu

    Will you be getting it tuned at any stage? what upgrades are you planning on PRE-tune? Injectors, CAI,??

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I eventually plan to turbo it, but only after I can drift pretty good with the stock KA. While it's NA I more than likely won't be doing anything because of the small HP gains for the money especially since I plan to go turbo so anything I do right now will have to be changed to go turbo. Hope that helps,

      fair enough im unsure of what KAs are like as we dont have them in Australia we have SR or CA
      dont know what they are like for power!

    Damn same thing happened to me. I just bought a '96 240sx and the previous owner changed the car to manual. But never changed the ecu. So I still have an auto ecu. It's a pain having to smog my car because about 13 codes start showing up. What's up with people being so impatient with 240's

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Momo-1013 That's the majority of the owners for ya. Sad to see any car be treated the way a lot of people treat 240's. Doesn't make sense to me...

  • @chidori602
    @chidori602 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you switched ecus, did you have to do any wiring? My 240 was converted to 5 speed aswell and it doesn't want to start when I switch to the manual ecu.

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, I just unplugged and plugged the other in. The manual ecu you have might be bad, but then again I didn't do the auto to manual swap so it could be something in your wiring.
      Hope that helps,

    How did you learn all the stuff you know? I know you said you were self taught, but did you learn from experience on a car or did you learn online or what? I watched all of your new drift car videos and because I liked them so much I'm going back through the videos for the first drift car. I love your videos man, keep it up! One thing I would love to see after you finish the drift car 2 is you critiquing your own work on your car. I would love to see this while you were driving the car around!

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +0nick4708 Learned online and then when I got the 240 I started working on it and getting the hang of things and then researching anything I didn't know and looking up how-to's and so forth. I'll for sure be critiquing the car after it's done no worries! Thanks for the comment and support :)

    Ive found that soldering wires inside the engine bay can lead to problems down the line due to the heat f the engine

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I know, force of habit and this was on the cold side of the engine bay behind the intake manifold so me and my dad came to the conclusion that it wouldn't mess with the soldered wires.

    Hey dude i noticed you said something about the oval shaped hole on the right side of the air box, my brothers 180sx has that and i was just curious if it is suppose to have something over that or what? Cheers in advance mate, watching from Australia! Keep it up

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is supposed to be a pipe going from the oval shaped hole to the lower box which is a resonator box (supposed to reduce engine noise). Really unnecessary though and you can run without it.
      Thanks!

    im doing a similar series! Awesome vids and awesome car. What do you think I should do maintenance wise to my car while i dont have a big budget right now? (I also have a 91 S13 hatch DOHC)

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome!
      --
      Idk what exactly to you isn't a big budget but here's my best answer:
      For maintenance I'd say just make sure everything important is functioning like it should and if anything is broken then fix it of course.
      But besides that here's the list:
      Change the oil and oil filter no matter what, even if the guy you bought it from says it was changed, change it anyways so you know exactly when and what kind of oil is in your car.
      See how clean the air filter is and change/clean that if need be.
      Check your brake pads and change those if yours are badly worn.
      Check your coolant and coolant level and if the coolant doesn't look good then flush it and put new coolant or water (whatever you prefer) and top off the coolant if it's low.
      Check your brake fluid and power steering fluid.
      Check your bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends and see how they are and if it's just bad ball joints or a couple bushings etc. you can replace those for cheap.
      Maybe change your fuel filter although it wasn't on the top of my list.
      Check your spark plugs as well, but mainly if you think the engine isn't running that good, and replace if necessary.
      Lastly if you still have money at this point haha I would probably also change the trans and diff fluid.
      ^Doing all that you can make a pretty solid and reliable car that's up to par :)

    how do u feel about hood spacing does it reduce heat ? or cause more???

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haven't been able to test the theory since the car already had hood spacers on it and cooling hasn't been an issue yet. But i feel that for drifting it would work cause your going sideways although some people claim it doesn't work, but those are guys who do grip driving... So definitely something to look into in the future for sure :)

    Awesome vid and if you dont mind me asking, how many km's or miles are on the engine. In Australia its hard to find a 180sx (240sx) with decent k's. Im curious.

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      This car has 170,000 miles on it and the engine and trans are supposed to have about 130,000 miles on it. Mileage for me wasn't a really big deal since everything will eventually be upgraded on the car anyways. So worn out bushings, worn out interior, blown shocks etc. really isn't a big deal in the long run, for me at least.
      Hope that helps,

    Any plans to strip all of the excess weight in the car? Or is this going to remain a practical daily driver?

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep going back and forth on what to do. The trunk is already stripped but I don't want to strip the rest of the carpet, panels and doors because it seems like it would get pretty hot and uncomfortable in the car without it.
      It's already not daily driven often because there's so much drone and the suspension isn't the most comfortable. But the car gets driven 160 miles round trip to the track. So 160 miles with no radio, no arm rest, more road noise and an even hotter interior (the car already doesn't have AC) seems a little unbearable hahaha

    ive noticed that your car is running on electric fans .. and the clutch fan removed .. do u recommend this .. im really thinking of the extra at least 1 hp gain out of it .. nd get red of the clutch fan air noise .. seeya

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      hamada nova Yes I recommend it. It doesn't rob power from the engine, it creates more room in the engine bay, and depending on how you wire it you can have the fans running while the car is off which is really helpful for hot days at the track. Hope that helps,

    What's your budget for power mods, should be able to pick up a sr20 or rb for cheap....
    Also how much power are you hoping to get out of the KA or are you not really fussed??

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right now the stock KA is solid for drifting, good torque and power for a beginner. And there's a guy at the track who drifts with a stock KA and absolutely kills it at the track! So until I get near that level haha, this KA is gonna be stock. The eventual plan is to turbo the KA, not an engine swap due to the cost and headache of swapping it's much easier and cost effective to stick with the KA.

    • @goughgreer-barry1773
      @goughgreer-barry1773 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    @CorporalHudson 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for your vids. I have 91 200SX too (its the same S13 as yours but here in the EU its called 200SX as you already know I guess). I am following your project because I will be going through some of these steps and its good to take notes from somebody who already did it. Do you plan to do a CA18, SR20 or RB25 swap?

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Noice! And yup I already knew that haha
      No swaps planned for me since my eventual power goal is to have 350HP, and with the KA24DE already in the car I can reach that with around $3k on stock internals. So it's easier and cheaper to stick with my engine since my power goal would be the same no matter the engine and this way I wouldn't have to deal with the headache of having to swap over and getting everything fitted etc.
      Hope that answers your question haha

    • @CorporalHudson
      @CorporalHudson 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yeah, for sure it does mate. Well I've got CA in my S13 and its 300HP with its stock internals. The cost was nowhere near 3k. The most expensive part was the bigger turbo ofc. But I got all my parts from friends, I don't mean for free but with a discount lol. I believe it will cost you more if you buy it as a kit so you should probably get each part of the setup separately. I can't be 100% sure though, since I am not living in the US :D The prices there may be different (the kit being cheaper than getting each part separately).

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      CorporalHudson Well your CA was already turbo from factory right? So it's not as bad to upgrade since you already have the basics done. But for the KA here in the US they come naturally aspirated so this is my plan of what I would have to buy:
      Turbo manifold, turbo, injectors, fuel pump, stand alone ecu, oil lines for the turbo, of course make a full exhaust for the turbo, wastegate, bov, intercooler, boost controller, new clutch, a wideband afr gauge as well as oil pressure gauge etc.
      And when I added that up it came out to about $3k without tuning, shipping for parts, the wideband afr and supporting gauges, and a clutch ahhaha
      ^Oh and that's with all parts brand new as well lol I tend to not like used parts hahah but that's just me

    • @CorporalHudson
      @CorporalHudson 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Pro tip: go for RECIRC bov, it will save you a ton of hassle. You car will be more responsive, it won't run rich and won't idle like shit. Just don't fall for atmo bov because of the sound that is likeable by the CoD kids and 14yo girls. Recirc or no bov at all. Also if you are not planning to drift every day or two, you don't need high end clutch. I am running with an OEM clutch and its fine. I changed it when I got the car long time ago, just in case. I go drifting during the weekends and I went to some events too, and its still good. You know best of course, I am just sharing some experience.

    • @OffBeatGarage
      @OffBeatGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CorporalHudson Going turbo is pretty far off from now so I still have a lot of time to sort everything out hahaha but yea dude thanks for sharing your experience :)

  • @Hammerhead224
    @Hammerhead224 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should swap the rubber hose over the exhaust manifold for a braided line. Thats a pretty big fire hazard.
