Enjoying your budget talk. Years ago when NZ was going through (let’s make everyone redundant and see what happens) phase we did a spreadsheet of everything we spent. Our friends couldn’t believe that we could be that honest with each other 😂. When the crunch came we knew where all the savings could be made. My husband learnt how to dye my hair for me and did a great job. I’m back at the hairdresser now as this is my treat. I’ve been cutting his hair for years now. We saw it as a challenge back then and what I couldn’t do with beans wasn’t worth knowing. I find it’s about mind set. If you think of it as fun it will be.
On the health front I’ve had gut problems for years, when I look back a lots was stress related. However hydration is important, I have to limit dairy, I use lactose free milk. I’m using coconut sugar in my baking and I think good quality manukau honey in my herbal tea makes a difference. I have one teaspoon a day with a small amount of coconut oil in a rooibos tea first thing. This may sound silly but really chew your food as it activates the stomach to aid digestion. Take care ❤

I make kombucha, it’s cheap and I believe it’s good for gut health. Fermenting garden produce. Like sauerkraut. We also eat a lot of kiwi fruit too. Love your videos thank you 🙏

I don't have your particular conditions, I have had ulcerative colitis for a couple of decades. I'm currently in remission and keeping my fingers firmly crossed.
I'm in remission largely due to looking after my gut health.
Basically, eat a cooked and cooled (refrigerated) potato and a green-tipped banana every day (resistant starches). Add a tablespoon of rice bran to food or drink daily (slow fermenting fibre). Eat beans daily - chick peas, black beans, 4bean mix, tofu, tempeh.
Limit meat and eggs, either 2 eggs or less than 150 grams of meat. Not both.
No nitrates, nitrites, sulfates or sulfites. Avoid foods that contain substances with numbers. Avoid sugar because it feeds the bad microbes.
Add healthy fats and aim for 30 different plants per week. Each different kind of nut seed grain fruit and vegetable is one of the 30. Eat lots of colourful vegetables.
Eat whole grains rather than the white versions.
These measures create a gut environment that supports the good bugs. They produce butyrate which is apparently very good for healing the gut.
Eating some plants raw can help increase to number of species in the gut. Adding probiotic foods can provide some temporary boosts of a small number of species. Well worth including them but the total diet is more important.
When I was first diagnosed I was told there was nothing I could do. While I was sick I was eligible to participate in studies which helped me learn about the most recent research.
I hope some of this information is useful and that you find what works for you

Hi Stacey ! I’ve watched you for awhile but don’t think I’ve commented.
Sorry you were in such pain but it’s good to find out the why. If I can say from a new experience ( had bowel trouble most of my 62 years) water. Lots of water. I upped my intake and noticed a big change. Carbs and sugar are my addictions but the water, 2.5 to 3 liters has been a big help
Love your channel. Thanks so much.

There are heaps places that sell meat bird chicks and not by the 4000, I've been looking into what breeds make up breeds like cobb or the likes so I can breed my own and eliminate the cost altogether of buying the chicks.

Is the only way to process them to butcher them yourself in NZ? I looked into raising meat chickens last year when we bought our place but it doesn't seem like you can get someone to butcher and process your poultry like you can a cow or sheep in NZ.

Probiotics in any form you can take are great gut food, if you make your own bread try to incorporate oats into your recipes even if it is only 10% to start with, oats are more easy to grind in a high powered blender than most grains. Oatmeal for breakfast is a good way to start your day with a gut cleaning food. If you buy a good fresh probiotic yogurt, you can use that as a starter for making your own yogurt just keep a little back for the next lot, yoghurt is quite easy to make & you can flavour it with fresh or frozen fruits, marinate meat in it, spice it up etc etc. I’ve heard a lot about the goodness of kefir but can’t comment as I haven’t tried it personally. Having been on high doses of NSAID & morphine based drugs for a long time, I feel for you in your pain, I find these things help (not cure) but without them I would be much worse off. A good all round spice to try to incorporate is turmeric it has a lot of good effects on the body. Keep well x ❤️❤️👏👏🇬🇧

Oats contain gluten & were one of the main foods I had to stop over 10 years ago as they were making me very sick. I was told that you could buy gluten free oats so I tried them & you guessed it, within a short while I was as sick as a dog. Big mistake!!

Try about 4 hot or sweet pepper stems instead of store bought yogurt starter. I use a weak qt of reconstituted powdered milk. Yes, it chains and loses the peppery taste at the 2nd chain. It is subbed for most dairy cooking. We don't keep regular milk since I only shop about every 6 weeks.

So glad to hear that you are back home and recovering. I had diverticulitis episodes for years, but haven't had a problem since my colon cancer surgery in 2019 (when they removed both the tumor and the dv-diseased portion). From my experience, any gut trauma can cause hair loss and brittle nails as the body prioritizes the resources for recovery.
My best advice is to keep a food diary, so you know which foods are a potential problem and which are "safe".
For example, I love pineapple, but it really sets me off. I can eat "faux pineapple" (zucchini that's been canned in a light pineapple syrup) without the same problems. Some cheeses are fine, others cause serious problems. I have to cook nearly all my veggies (no salads for me). Not medical advice, obviously; we all have to try and find what works for us.
Also thought I would share our "low-buy January" results, since we just did our last shopping trip - we managed to cut our grocery expenses by 75% by eating mostly from the freezer and pantry, only purchasing fresh veggies, eggs, and our normal household stuff.

A food diary was a suggestion I had as well. I have bowel issues after a very long hysterectomy surgery so eating only cooked vegetables is something i might try. I had chronic diarrhoea and pain and discovered it was almond milk.

well done getting this vid out - have had some very nasty gut issues over the last two years. Diverticulitis - very bad also seizures etc - no need to go into it - the changes that are helping me hugely are no sugar, I use my own honey, olive oil locally grown cold processed, my own yoghurt, but no other dairy - not having cheese has been a real paint the ---- gluten free everything , I make my own gluten free bread slice and freeze it - playing with which veggies I can eat really helped too , no onion what so ever, no chillies , leeks or spring onions. The big break through for me was realising if I wanted to be well I had to prioritise what I ate. I am blessed with a supportive family and they have adjusted to the gluten free stuff now - love em but I still dribble when I see them chowing down on lovely cheese . look after yourself - you are one of a kind and we need you

I had experienced frequent episodes of pain that would last days, but since the episode last year where I ended up in hospital and diagnosed via CT scan, I have never had another pain after that, and it's been about a year now. I had lingering pain for around a month afterwards, then nothing. Hope you're feeling a little better now, and i wish you a speedy recovery.

Sorry about your hospital stay. I don't have the same condition but had to make drastic changes in my eating habits about two years ago to improve my gut health. I found that fermented foods made a big difference to my health, so I started fermenting veggies, and of course, making sourdough bread (I usually add wholegrains too). I also cut out sugar unless absolutely necessary for a recipe. My gastroenterologist was amazed that I had dramatically slowed progression of my condition. Make the changes that feel right to you. No need to follow a specific diet IMO. All the best.

So glad to see your face! I do much better with homemade breads, especially sourdough. So you are on the right track with that! Have tried fermenting and also feel better and kombucha. All these things give rest to your gut so there's not as much gut work to do for your body to get the nutrients it needs. Maybe also look into best practices for soaking and cooking grains and beans and nuts. These were all done long ago as common practice. I have not ever had diverticulitis or the other thing you have, but just weight and bloating issues, irregularity and lactose intolerance. (When I make my own yogurt, I'm fine, go figure) It really makes me realize how 'off' our foods are! Anyway, hope I have entertained you. Wishing you well and a patient attitude with recovery 😉💜

Have been recording all my grocery expenses for 6 plus years, have been growing 90% plus of our vegetables and 50% of our fruit for 30 plus years, admit my husband is only on board because he thinks we can live on nothing, the biggest expense is his beer, which he demands come out of food budget. The best fruits to grow are the soft fruits (strawberries, blackberries and blueberries) with the best fridge keeping being blueberries. Have just made a fruit sauce using blackberries.
Have been diagnosed with diverticulitis for 27 years, no beef( but weirdly can eat lots of silver side and mince), no vegetable oils, only use bran, olive, coconut oils, its modern factory food that upsets my stomach, as can eat my own baking, too much sugar especially icing sugar, castor sugar can be a problem. Cream can't process, but fine with cheeses, yoghurt, try to limit butter, have issues with pasta, white rice.
Meals have rolled oats, bran, sultanas and chia soaked with milk, eat 2 heaped dessert spoons for breakfast along with a serving of fresh fruit and herbal tea. Lunch is generally a salad or soup all vegetables occasionally some protein either cheese, cold meat, or tin tuna(but my budget is only 1 tin or less a week) don't usually have protein at lunch, dinner is always freshly picked or from storage home grown vegetables, am still eating pumpkin from last season, always have brassicas, carrots, lettuce, silverbeet/spinach and onions year round, nearly self sufficient in potatoes garden in Hororata New Zealand, dinner will have a protein but less is better around 80grams of actual meat, fish more like 150 plus gram.
Message me if you want more information, its unfortunately with diverticulitis all about what we put in our mouths!!! Bowel movements shape is the most important sign!!!

Stacey, when it comes to buying in bulk how do you budget for your next purchase. Do you allocate a sum from your grocery budget and put that aside for the next purchase. Your channel is doing really well and I love it. I am in Brisbane and wish I could be doing your farm life. Did it when my children were young and they loved it. I started watching right at the beginning when you were starting out and remember you challenging yourself. Your were really anxious but look at you now. We are just your friends waiting for the next visit when we sit around the kitchen table, chat over a tea or coffee. Can;t believe the health issues though. but respect that you don''t let it stop you from living life. Greatest respect Stacey. You are really strong. Love Denise.

All I do know of that condition is the pain is caused by ischaemia ( lack of O2) of the colon caused by the torson ( twisting). Its an inflammatory process so eating a diet that is anti inflammatory would be the way to go.
I'd take a magnesium supplement to relax your bowel , relax your nervous system, and keep you regular. I'd take co-enzyme Q 10 450mg to boost your energy as it really makes a noticeable difference. It sounds like you also need a high quality multi vitamin with zinc and folic acid present in therapeutic amounts for your hair.
I wonder have you been doing heavy lifting around the farm. I've had it once after a power lifting competition and apparently heavy lifting can cause it. It will come right but it takes about 3 weeks of rest.

I’m excited to follow along and see how you manage your meals and budget. We are a family of 4 adults in Australia and for the life of me I cannot imagine getting our budget that low, I spend around $1200/mth and that’s after I’ve cut back on a lot of things! I’d be happy just to get it under $1000! I look forward to your printables too! 🙏
Glad you are feeling better. I hope you can find some help with your gut issues ❤

Just got to the bit where you talk about the radio show and the average NZ family of four spends $350. I'm in Aus, we're a family of four (boys are 13 and 11) and I budget $360 a week and sometimes we spend more. It's crazy. I just calculated that and it's $18,720 a year. And that's not counting takeaways as I do put $50 away for that. Desperately need to cut my spending on food this year and stop food wastage.

So glad you're back Stacey. PLEASE do not stress and feel you have to put out videos, just get better. You know we don't mind the talking head videos at all. We just like your company.
As for a grocery budget, mine includes most household items, cleaners, toothpaste etc. I also set aside 2 - 300 dollars a year for bulk buying corn and peaches in season as well as a large purchase of porkchops and chicken on sale
I like the idea of a quarterly budget. What about setting aside the last 2 weeks of the quarter for a use it up, rather than doing it all in 1 month like use it up October? I always get little odds and ends piling up...
Keep getting better and take care of yourself.

Hey there from Brisbane, I have had issues (alot of issues) to do with gut & colon. I have tried so many things & nothing worked My life revolves around pain & pain killers. Which can really bind you up. Anyway I now soak acacia seeds and oats in almond milk overnight & have it for breakfast. Regular as clockwork nowadays.😊

I only include food & things like toilet paper, tissues, washing liquid & soaker, anything I buy in the grocery store. I have a tight budget for it. I only shop in Woolies as I shop online & they send me a weekly email that tells me what the specials are in regards to the foods that they see that I buy on a regular basis. I also check the price per kilo & sometimes it can be cheaper to buy the items in smaller quantities & other times it is cheaper to buy in larger quantities. I stick like glue to the $250 per fortnight max as I am on a pension. So often there are things on my list that have to wait until the next fortnight to be bought.
Basically, you answered your own question yourself. You need to go keto or at least cut out gluten altogether but if you can't then at least cut back on eating gluten products. The problem is that they spray wheat with glyphosate before harvesting & it is damaging all our guts especially those who eat prepackaged food. There are plenty of recipes you can make without using gluten, [I am now experimenting with using gluten flour instead of wheat flour in normal recipes to see what difference there is to the recipe] also just use corn flour to thicken but check the packet that it is indeed corn & not wheat that they use like here in Australia. You mentioned learning to make gluten free bread & I would be thrilled if it is a subject you tackle this year. I also cut back on the intake of sugar in my cooking. In fact, until my christmas shop I hadn't bought sugar in over 10 years since going gluten & sugar free.
Like yourself I would love to be able to afford to buy grass fed meat & healthy chicken meat & only hope that the turkey mince & frozen turkey breast I buy is free from hormones etc. I actually did spend a bit more money & buy some beef that was grass fed as it was still slightly reduced in price than normal. I follow Dr Eric Berg on youtube & have done so for 10 years, he puts out lots of videos on how to treat your health & have been blessed by him many times over the ten years of following his advice. The latest being that I was totally vitamin B1 deficient which was causing my sciatica & the cause behind my peripheral nephropathy & since starting the B1 tabs twice daily, two months later & I can feel the soles of my feet again, however, I still am getting some nerve pain so I am not there yet but it probably took years to deplete so I expect it will take several months to correct itself properly. Going by your age, I would say that menopause issues may be at the root of the issue. th-cam.com/video/M1zphh8YzD8/w-d-xo.html For me it is long term low thyroid issues.
In the meantime look up his solutions about your bowel issues & diverticulitis etc. & see what he suggests, as well as that other problem, as it could also be related to a vitamin or mineral deficiency that the mainstream medical profession will never pick up. My doctor was surprised when I told him about the vitamin B1 issue as he didn't even know that B1 is necessary for energy levels, heart health as well as the nervous system because they don't study what vitamins & minerals do in the human body & I have been studying them now for over forty years first through health food stores & their leaflets etc., then over 10 years ago when I found out about youtube & it is through this that has kept me alive until today & helped me reverse my dementia that had started thanks to the ineptitude of the medical profession, so I am always happy to pass on Dr Berg's link & to tell people to type in your problem & watch videos from alternative health professionals as in Australia the government doesn't endorse alternative health care which is a crime against humanity!! As it was said centuries ago by Hippocrates's, "let food be your medicine"

It's great to see you home and on the mend. I'm definitely interested in doing the grocery budgeting as we now live on our pensions since retirement. I'm increasing the vegetable garden output to help. We have fruit trees and chickens for eggs. I don't have the gut issue you mentioned, but I have fibromyalgia, and stomach/digestion problems are part of it. I think that with these kinds of health problems, it comes down to trial and error. I hope you can get to know your trigger foods quickly.

Sorry you have not been well. I suffer with diverticulitis and sensitive egg and gluten and pulses. When I have a flare up. I make bone broth beef and chicken. I add fresh turmeric ginger and garlic dried doesnt seem to work as well. Thats all I have apart from tea made with ginger honey and lemon. I do that for 3/4 days thats usually enough to settle it. My doctor gave me really strong antibiotics in the uk its called metronidazol. While it worked the made me feel very sick it took longer for the bowel to recover. I have to buy organic fruit and veg. I dont eat bread rice pasta white potatoes or tomato seeds and skin, and nightshade veg. I eat a lot of sweet potato. But mostly meat as I have had a gastric bypass. I do very well on that.

We don't include petrol in our food budget and I don't know of anyone who does. We do a single fortnight bulk shop and bread/milk runs (normally twice a week on the way home from work). If we don't have it, we don't eat it (unless there's a real reason or something unplanned happens). Start using yoghurt more than cream in sauces, etc as a substitute.

I was interested to hear about your gut issues, in 2016 i had very agressive chemotheraphy, which caused severe gut issues for me and had to spend a long time in hospital. I now have to be very careful about my diet, and yes probiotic yoghurt is helpful, i still suffer from falling hair, and like you i like chippies, my bad but i find they are easily digested. I wish you luck Stacey, get well soon❤

Pleased you're home and feeling better, check out your local council website regarding keeping chickens for eggs and meat not sure about rural but in residential areas some places allow up to 12, brown shavers produce beautiful eggs, trademe has listings for them. I dont include gas but i do have $20 per fortnight built into my food budget to keep my vege garden ticking along. Everyone does things differently is my opinion on that, no hard and fast rules. I'm with you on the whole chippie thing.......I love chippies!!

Hello Stacey, my husband has diverticlitis and he got infection started bleeding had a fever and was super sick that how we found out he had it he had to be put on antibiotics but what we found out from a incredible nutritionist whose daughter has diverticulitis is never do raw oatmeal like granola or granola bars he can have cooked oatmeal or soaked oatmeal just NEVER raw when you eat granola the fibers in the oatmeal are not soft I was making homemade granola at the time he got sick and the nutritionist daughter keep getting infections because she was eating granola bars. To help him I give him slippery elm bark powder I make capsules and give him about 4 at a time every so offen or marshmellow root powder they work the same also DGL deglycyrrhizinated licorice it helps the lining and intestinal flora it is wonderful also for acid reflex the brand he uses is Planetary herbals they are chewable but when he has acid reflex he just sucks on them. Good luck I love your videos so much thank you for everything you do to help us save money and for wonderful recipes.

I'd go with whatever is purchased at a grocery store is all one budget, ymmv. We only have 2 grocery stores in the county and I'm boycotting 1 because they over charge and don't fix the receipt so not much choice here. You do what is best for you.
All the well wishes on getting your health back on track. Reading through the comments everyone is topsy turvy these days. Years ago, I was on Weight Watchers and felt it was a good all round healthy diet. However, I never lost an ounce and globs of hair was falling out. I could be just sitting there and would feel a ping on my head and a hair would fall out. It was constant ping, ping, ping, ping, ping all day long and would have to wipe hair off the desk constantly. Stopped WW and the pings stopped but don't know why. The hair never did thicken up though and gets thinner and thinner but thinking now it is age related.

I obviously missed something because I did not know you were unwell. I am sorry but happy you are starting to be well again and I live with chronic pain so I know. I have always had stomach pain and I have worked out what I can eat but it is not always the same. Sometimes safe food still does it.
Your love of potato chips is my love of ice cream. Maybe because the cold makes my stomach feel better. You know, I think it is okay to have that one comfort food in our lives as long as we have a stop button.
The illness you described sounds much like one my husband has. He has his checked every year and they remove any they find. He has not had any for the last few years so it must come and go. He is a very healthy eater, we all are and always have been because I lost both parents to heart when they were very young. My Mother’s was genetic but I didn’t know until I had 3 babies and now my eldest son is fighting it. One of my sisters had a heart transplant and I lost my baby brother due to a hospital mistake. So my children grew up on a heart diet. They had healthy meals, always with desert and they never noticed they didn’t have sugar and many other things kids that live on.
I couldn’t save them from the genetic section but I could from my Dad’s side. All I ever wanted was a house full of children so we fostered and later adopted our youngest from South Korea. We loved getting to help raise 50 babies.
I hope someone can help with foods that could help you. I know it took me about a year to workout no Cholesterol meals before anyone had heard of cholesterol. ❤

Oh Stacey, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been unwell and in hospital. I pray that this condition will settle for you soon. I am not familiar with the condition, but I know when I’ve disciplined myself and have taken gluten out of my diet I feel much better and helps my pain levels as it reduces the inflammation. Other than that I can recommend seeing an Osteopath who specialises in functional medicine. They can recommend natural products to help with resolving gut issues. Of course using prebiotics and probiotics will also help. Good luck Stacey. Please take the time for yourself so you can fully heal. Sending healing thoughts and 🤗 🤗
