    .
. David, a student pilot, is working on his private pilot license. He flies at my flight school, and we're about 4 lessons in. After a handful of lessons, he's doing great, and we're starting to dial in this landings as he learns how to land an airplane. As a CFI, this is a really fun part of the flight training.
In this episode, we're working the traffic pattern during his flight training. Additionally, we start with some airwork to make sure he understands the stick and rudder skills required for the traffic pattern.
It's been fun being a part of David's aviation journey to becoming a private pilot.
    2:10 Steep Turns
We start with steep turns. One of the reasons I emphasize steep turns early in the training is because of load factor. That feel of the load factor is something I do not want the student feeling while they are landing, so to understand that concept is really important.
    6:14 Scenic Break
Don't forget to take a break from training every now and again. Looking at the scenery while flying the airplane is just something we need to do now and again. That's why we're doing flight training after all, to experience that aviation adventure.
    6:95 Arrival Procedures
Arriving at the airport can be particularly difficult. Planning for our descent, making radio calls, running checklists, checking weather, and a handful of other operations. This can make things rushed, so make sure to take all the time you need to plan your landing.
12:05 Unstable Approach + Go Around
A successful landing starts with a successful and smooth approach. In this case, we have an unstable approach because we are too high and too fast. I teach David to go around, in the power up-pitch up-clean up steps. Learning to go around is certainly part of the entire process of learning how to land and airplane.
    15:15 Monkey See, Monkey Do
Sometimes students just need to observe and see how to pull all the pieces together. We can talk about steps as a CFI or flight instructor, but the transitionary steps in between are tricky to explain. Seeing is believing, and when it comes to seeing the instructor do things, it really helps a lot. A lot of students are overwhelmed when learning how to land an airplane. Just a few approaches and landings, even though I'd love the student to have all of them.
    19:25 All Together Now!
Now we bring all the pieces together as David does his last pattern. There are a few you didn't get to see, and we get to see the final pattern where it's clear he's made a ton of progress. In learning how to land an airplane, it just takes a lot of patience.
Altogether, David is doing a great job working on his private pilot license and putting the pieces together quite well. Really proud of the work he's done, and it been a lot of fun to be his CFI as he learns to fly.

This was great for me to watch. As a student pilot I am a wimp…first time I tried steep banks I also didn’t pull back enough on the yoke, but what really messes me up was the anemic 1.4 (about) G forces. I was not prepared for how that made my head and body feel after only doing nice 30 deg banks. CFI kept (much more aggressive than this ..CFI) barking “pull back, pull back, pull back” and also the strength I needed to do that. I just wasn’t prepared for both G’s and just how much force one has to use on the yoke.
    Watching this helped me. Thanks!

As a student pilot it is fun and interesting to watch a student that’s just a few hours behind where I am in training to see them mentally “click” on things that I struggled with a few hours back. It’s reassuring to see we all struggle. I was laughing out loud when he remembered ‘mixture’ during GUMPS. I would recite that day and night then brain fart in the plane for the longest time. That said, the further along in training I get the more I’m realizing how much more I have to learn....(the more ya know the more you realize ya don’t know s**t) 🤦🏻the learning never ends.

Nice. Great video! On steep turns, I didn’t see any trim changes (might be hidden in video). What I found really helped my students (in 172s) is two full turns of trim as rolling in to your bank and introducing back pressure : Grasp the trim wheel with thumb and index finger at the very top, and rotate it nose up all the way til your fingers hit the stop at the bottom, then repeat. Instant level steep turn. As they roll out and are pushing forward, trim comes out in reverse order.

Nice video, When I was training for my PPL, on a go around it was made clear that after full power, keep the nose level so you build air speed first
retract one flap, then slowly pitch up to and retract the rest of flaps to prevent a departure stall. This is especially true when you have pitch set for nose up on Landing and you don’t change it on the go round part. Thanks for these great videos.

Good point. A student pilot lost his life 2 days ago attempting a go around. He was landing on a 3200' strip, landed long and bounced. He tried to go around and powered up, the nose went up and he didn't pitch down to gain airspeed and stalled out at 200 ft. Plane rolled left and nosed in.

Cool video man! It would be awesome to see a video about your camera setups. Curious about all the mounts and cameras you use to pull off all these awesome angles.

Loving the vids fresh is good, Ccccllleeeaaarrr stuck in my head now every vid gets a 😁
Wish all lessons had a chill out phase multiple breaks between segments to unwind ur head u get so tense when learning - the lap for scenic should be mandatory in all schools.. 👍👍
Equal a lap of the pattern to watch me(u) helps soo much with verbal pointers on everything u are doing and thinking.
Pointers for picking up where u need corrections- less 2-3max per lap segment would help me progress quicker I feel , not overloading students trying to focus on the pattern steps too many comments sometimes for me is very overwhelming and freaks me out that I get to the point am so stressed and makes the head almost unable on the next lap to follow the steps where required end up so far behind where I should be - mind control for the body actions are necessary and pattern steps end being lost and a wasted lap due to stress malfunction , rest laps help for sure..
maybe some schools are just milking extra time due to this tactic .
Maybe just need a more chill instructor maybe need to go visit Alaska everything looks chill-y but beautiful :)
Loving the work and Vids u have spent the time to make keep up the great work AoA

“Dragging through the horizon “ was a revelation. How do you know when to turn the plane and align the plane to the runaway? What are you looking for when you’re watching the runaway?

Hi Chris, I’ve been a follower of yours on Instagram for a long time. I actually asked you for some medical advice during a live Q&A you held.
Well, I finally got my medical this October and I started flying! I struggle with left handed steep turns as well.
But S-Turns and ground reference maneuvers are my Achilles heel, any advice?

I still struggle with good steep turns with looking outside when I do not use the trim method. Gotta keep practicing. Stage 2 check tomorrow!

Great video but the visor being down interferes with the view.

Simply sticking the landing is what I struggle with. The rounding out and flare is what’s hindering me lol

I have a 175 skylark and I’m wondering what size tires you have on that 172 and what steering fork do you have?. Great videos!
