    Dawson's line "We were supposed to fight for those who couldn't fight for themselves. We were supposed to fight for Willie." That line gets me every time. Being a veteran myself..this is what it means to serve. To help those who need help regardless of branch of service..honor and doing the right thing matters. And Jack Nickleson..omg he is so commanding in his acting...while he seems to always play a villain of some sort..the man is a legend.

    One of the best scripts written for this kind of film. A film is only as good as the words the actors speak. Aaron Sorkin wrote it and went on to create and write West Wing, one of the best TV dramas ever.

    From IMDB trivia on this film. 1. Sorkin wrote the play/film based on his sister's experience as a JAG lawyer with a similar role to Gallagher, in a similar case. "An unnamed executive gave Aaron Sorkin a note: 'If Tom Cruise and Demi Moore aren't going to sleep with each other, why is Demi Moore a woman?' He responded, 'I said the obvious answer: Women have purposes other than to sleep with Tom Cruise.' He claimed the incident was his worst experience as a screenwriter."

      @@edwardchiu2739 Here's another bit, if you're interested. There's a video going a little viral at the moment on youtube: ""America is not the greatest country in the world anymore." It's a clip from the pilot of HBO's series, The Newsroom." That's another show written by Sorkin, long after A Few Good Men. Sorkin wrote The Social Network, the first 4 (?) seasons of the West Wing, The American President, Moneyball, Steve Jobs, and so much more. A trip into Sorkin territory would be well worth the time.

    The real problem for the defendants is that you are never obligated to obey and order that is unlawful. Lt. Kendrick could not lawfully order them to commit battery against Santiago. When they obeyed that unlawful order, they absolutely committed a crime.

    Good reaction to a great movie. You asked about what you missed. Well, you acknowledged the cast and you acknowledged the director. But the brilliance of this movie was in the writing. What you missed was an acknowledgement of the writer Aaron Sorkin.

      @@Yeedeed That's cool. Writers in general deserve shine. But I personally think movie REACTORS should watch things as blind as possible (including things about cast and crew). That way, there's more to react to. Research should be reserved for movie reviewers imo.
      But my point wasn't that you should acknowledge writers in general. Just that Aaron Sorkin in particular should've been shouted out here. He's not just a writer. He's a wizard wordsmith. A known genius in the industry famous for his walk-and-talks and incredibly smart dialogue. And as for "A Few Good Men," it was originally a Broadway play written by... playwright Aaron Sorkin.
      It was his baby. And the screenplay for the movie was adapted from the play by... screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.

      MrROKinROK, empathically yes! the screen writing is the foundation for "a few good men". The acting by the stars and supportive cast were great because they each delivered and did justice with their lines. Indeed, one of the few films where the dialogue is paced so lively and keeps one attention from beginning to the very end--- "atten--hut, there's an office on deck," and the marine salutes the evolved officer, who in return, salutes back the marine... an honorable gesture by and to a few good men.

    Lactic acid is produced when glucose is burned through an anaerobic process. It's basically splitting C6H12O6 is split into two molecules of C3H6O3. C3H6O3 is an acid (unlike C6H12O6, which is a sugar).
    Lactic acid is what causes muscle aches and cramps.
    "-osis" denotes a state or condition of the body. Concentrations exceeding the limits the body can process is basically poisoning.
    Acidosis denotes a higher acidity of the blood than normal, which affects your respiratory system. Acidosis often happens when you're not clearing carbondioxide from your system. It slows your breathing rate. Carbondioxide dissolved in water is slightly acidic. This is what gives carbonated drinks its slightly acidic or fresh flavor.

    Galloway knew Caffey was both brilliant (so could win), and extremely flawed (a "slick Persian bizarre" plea haggler, taking the path of least resistance). She is who pushed him to become the kind of lawyer and officer worthy of Dawson's closing salute. Jessep saw Galloway's critical role when in Cuba she insisted Jessep needed to answer her question about the code red, just as Caffey was trying to stop her questioning. Jessep's extreme sexist response was meant to throw her off emotionally. It failed. Her response was to recognize it as noise, and reply, "I'm going to need an answer to my question, Colonel." When Caffey pushed Jessep emotionally in the same way (on the stand), Jessup crumbled. Male reviewers seem to routinely miss the key role and importance of Galloway in this film. Without her, there'd have been no change in Caffey at all.

    28:05 that ribbon would be the Nation Defense Service Medal, at this time frame probably from the time of the 1st Gulf War. Its a Ribbon that is authorized to wear when you in the military service when they are still considered active hot spots that the US Military is engaged in. I got mine when I got into Boot Camp in 1995, from the NATO Operation in Bosnia. The Series that graduated after Mine was not elligible for that Ribbon. The US Marine Corp doesn't have a Basic Training Ribbon.

    You seem to be an okay dude reacting to a good movie. I was in the army as a volunteer. 1979 til 1983. Served as a RADAR operator in the 62nd Artillery HAWK air defence in Essentho, then Western Germany. RADAR base was just across from the East German Border. Was fun getting locks on the East German planes and asking for "friend or foe". They dove down in the valleys of course where we could no longer track them. But we caught them again once the came out of the valleys. Trace and follow with our rockets sinchronised with the High Power radar right on their arses. First radar to get the speed, second radar to get the heighth; third radar to get the distance and then get that info to the High Power radar to get a lock on the device and get the rockets to go along in total synchronicity.

    Mike, I don't know if you're into documentaries, but there is a TH-camr known as "Montemayor," who has some of the most excellent documentaries on war. These are highly animated videos, with real-life photos/videos dispersed throughout them. Due to the fact that it takes him a year or more to produce a video, there aren't too many of them right now. There are some videos of the USA war with Mexico in the mid-1800's, some dealing with the American Civil War, and others dealing with the Pacific battles of WWII. My favorite is his three-part documentary on the Battle of Midway. Each part of this trilogy is from 30 - 45 minutes long. If you were to react to these videos, you may have to break them down into smaller segments. At the very least, it would give you a whole week's worth of material for your reaction channel. These are the MOST in-depth, complete videos on the battle that I have ever seen, and IMO they outperform other videos on this battle that are made by professional "Hollywood" caliber filmmakers.
    Also, other Hollywood war movies you should give a look/reaction to are "Mister Roberts (1955)" ..... Not the play nor the TV sitcom of the same name. And, "The Caine Mutiny (1954)." Without giving away any spoilers:
    "Mister Roberts" stars Henry Fonda, James Cagney, and Jack Lemmon, and is about a WWII Navy officer who feels that his time aboard a supply ship is a waste, especially since his desire is to join a task force and see some action.
    "The Caine Mutiny" stars Humphrey Bogart, Fred MacMurray, and Van Johnson, and is about a WWII destroyer Captain who crumples under the pressure command. A large part of the movie is a court proceeding against the second in command of the USS Caine for a perceived mutiny. It is much like "A Few Good Men."
    Keep up the great work my brother ..... Go Air Force, Aim High!

      I agree with this. Although Tom Cruise is mostly known as an "action movie star", he's actually more of an "actor" than most people know. He's not a chameleon type actor as someone like Daniel Day Lewis or Gary Oldman, where they completely disappear into their character. However, he's very much in Jack Nicholson's league where he turns the character into a version of himself and is able to act naturally in a very realistic way given his character's circumstance. Instead of asking "what would it be like to BE this person", he asks "how would I be if I walked in this person's shoes". He's what I like to call a reactionary actor, in that he's very good at "reacting" to the the story (as it unfolds) and to the cues of his other actors as they give their lines. He's totally believable in not only the films you mentioned, but also Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, and even some of his action films like War of the Worlds. Ironically, it's Tropic Thunder (a comedic film) where he is notable for disappearing underneath a character and becoming someone else.

    The Uniform Code of Military Conduct requirement that personnel refuse to obey an unlawful order is a catch 22. If you obey the order, you are liable for the unlawful act. If you don't obey the order, you are liable for refusing to obey an order. If the question of the lawfulness of the order is adjudicated, the jury will be made up of officers (who expect all of their orders to be obeyed without question), not your peers.

    Dude, great reaction. For the ultimate court-martial movie - and also just one of the greatest war movies ever - definitely check out Stanley Kubrick's "Path's Of Glory". DEVESTATING, intense movie. And for ultimate Jack Nicholson, check out "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and "Chinatown". Both two of the greatest of the 70s/ever.

    If you liked Saving Private Ryan, you definitely need to watch the "Band of Brothers" miniseries, if you haven't already.
    If you haven't, I suggest you go into it blind. Don't research it or look up the cast or anything. Just realize that, while it is dramatized, it is *not* fiction.
    It makes a good series for reaction videos, and is also one of the best war series ever made regardless.

    You say you were too young to remember but I wonder if it had any role for you in deciding to go into the military?

    • @Yeedeed
      @Yeedeed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MoMo, to answer your question, no. The reason I joined is a bit personal, but I will tell you it involved my best friend flying to Tennessee to see me, and spending the entire week he was there talking me into joining.

    Honest question. Would you feel better with somebody like Jessep - who let's say made great decisions during war time and saved thousands of lives... Or a different General who said all the right things, was politically correct, but because of following things to the rail, lost thousands negligently? The happy midian is in the middle but that doesn't make movies. It's one extreme or the other unfortunately.

    • @Yeedeed
      @Yeedeed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand the point you're making, and I also like the critical thinking! I would argue that neither extreme would matter in court, if it boils down to the question of Did Col. Jessep give an illegal order. The factual answer is yes.
      To answer your question though, and as someone allowed to live in the gray area, my response is that it would depend on the situation, I won't always go with the war time leader making great decisions, and I won't always go with the by the book leader who always is politically correct. Just as in this case not giving an illegal order would have saved a life, in another example, a leader of a construction company following a company policy which led to the negligent use of asbestos in a building could take a life. It's not always going to be the same answer.
