Hello Oscar. We are enjoying a bit of your regular weather this Sunday morning.n It has been raining for about 3 hours, just a gentle little rain but it will do wonders for the forest fire situation which has been very bad this past two weeks. I have the R251 which came in Maroon livery. It had the BR logo on the tender and a BR number on the cab side. It has been heavily weathered to the point of no Maroon being visible except from looking underneath. Still a great runner though. It was bought new just as a loco, no coaches. Regards, David.
Good morning David. The weather has brightened up here a little here this week. After the rain of the previous couple of weeks. But even with the sun shining there is no real heat in it any more! However, the schools go back after the long six weeks holiday next week. So it should be seriously hot then for a week or so! Great to hear you have the R.251 in maroon with the BR logo and number. Given the mystery surrounding its existence, it will be one of the rarer Tri-ang Hornby items. Here's a quote from Pat Hammonds Book (Tri-ang Hornby The Story of Rovex Vol 2 1965-1971 / First printed 1998 by New Cavendish Books ) p151 "Doubt has long surrounded the existence of the BR maroon version of the Model as illustrated in the 1966 and 1967 catalogues. Judging by the date of the drawings for the MR version (see below) it is unlikely that a batch of BR models was made. Models claimed to have been seen may have been pre-production models and a report in the Railway Modeller in January 1966 clearly states that the model was to be in Midland colours. This would have been based on information received from the factory late in 1965"

The R.251 with the Mark 2 couplings is the rarest version of this model as it was only made for a few months at the end of 1957 - beginning of 1958, as the Mark 3 "Tension Lock" couplings became the production standard.
I've been after a 1st issue Mark 2 coupling version for a few years now.

Nice video again Oscar . Always thought of the 3F as really being a Jinty with a tender . As you said Triang made max use out of that chassis .

The 3F refers to a locomotive's tractive effort (train hauling) capabilities and range (water & coal) when hauling a Class 3 Freight train.
Evening Star is a Class 9F so has vastly more freight hauling capabilities than the R.251 Deeley.
In real life the R.52 Jinty would have the same hauling and range capabilities as the R.251 Deeley hence the 3F classification. The original Jinties were Class 1F but were upgraded to then high technology steam Belpaire fireboxes thus increasing their power and range, hence the 3F.
The classification was so that railway logistics managers could see at a glance what the capabilities were for each locomotive available at a shed and appoint them appropriately.
British Railways diesels had the Type system based in a similar way until the TOPS system came into use.

Seeing this model makes me scream out JAMES THE RED ENGINE (minus the extended front and pony truck).
I have a bachmann 3f but seen as they are not very expensive I might pick up this maroon one. I hope bachmann will make a maroon one as well :)

Seems a pity that no Midland versions of the clerestories were made to go with the Midland 3F but its still a fine engine. Thanks for sharing this one, and even though they are toys the image conveyed is still convincing.
They would have been a nice addition to the catalogue. I think when you look back there are many things that they prehaps should have made. As you say Tri-ang managed a very convincing effect in the days before ultra fine detailing became possible. Dave Angell has some interesting re-modelled Suburban coaches in GWR livery on his website daveangell.co.uk/index.php?pg=c&cat=2162 Tri-ang never made these either.

Wonderful, my Deeley rebuild has always been a favorite, bit of wear on mine but still loved.
