Currently, I’m writing my dissertation for a PhD in Linguistics, but as I go through the process, I am falling in love with Anthropology, particularly the gender and sexuality. I am hoping to write a future dissertation that intersects these areas and hopefully hone myself to be a Feminist Linguistic Anthropologist. 😊
I loved doing my intrinsic interest phd in my late 40s/early 50s which I did partly to gain the expertise to do a startup, but it inadvertently lead to an academic career which has been soul destroying. Under the thumb of ruthless autocrats, the sort of job I could get was nothing like the intellectual independence of a phd. If I could get a job doing something like a phd, I would! So I'd like to do a 2nd IFF I could get a 2nd scholarship which doesn't look likely. What I'd really like to do is an entrepreneurial phd, where you get the support to do your startup, but I don't think that exists.
Thanks Dr. Tara, this was so awesome! I will be pursuing my second PhD in an adjacent field because I found that a lot of my postdoc research in the area that I earned my doctorate and was crossing over into another field. And while I could be an autodidact, I prefer a structured academic environment that would officially credential me as an expert in the field that was intersecting with my first PhD postdoc topics. Thank you so much for this and this only confirms my decision to go ahead and pursue my second PhD. And I love your sense of humor😄 Thank you and God bless!
Taking the coursework in a different academic area was the most interesting part. Then of course the methodology of my second earned doctorate was very different from the first one. Knowledge is power :-). Greetings from the U.S.
This was awesome as always! I love your vlogs. I have a professional doctorate but am seriously thinking about a PhD via past publication as I have moved from applied practice into academic. My research is also increasingly becoming interdisciplinary.

I did a second one. I did it to prepare for a significant transition in my career. My doctorate was in one area (higher education) and my career was in another (human resource development). So, I did a doctorate in HRD and did my research on a topic in which I wanted to be an expert. The second one was hard. Yes, I knew how to do one, but there was a sense that I had to do even better this time around.

could you please tell what gives your profile more weightage, a second phd or a postdoc? I have recently completed my phd in literature and confused whether to do a second phd or go for a postdoc. My sole intention is to make by vita more alluring.

When one can do a second or a third Post Doc, there is really no reason for doing a second Ph.D.
