Sundari Kannal: How Ilaiyaraaja hides magic in this tune | Thalapathy | Rajinikanth

  • “Sundari Kannal oru seithi” is Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s famous composition, the prominent love song in director Mani Ratnam’s film “Thalapathy” starring Rajinikanth. It features alternating romantic music and action-war music. Since Rajinikanth’s character carries out street justice he is often in dangerous situations, separated from his lady love. But they feel wedded to each other and their love lasts past all that. The song portrays this using visual metaphors.
This video analyzed the magic behind just the two main lines in the song.

Thank u! In any music, it is very hard to answer a “why we like it” question... I keep on looking at why we like certain tunes, etc. lifelong... in many directions... there might be psychology, math, culture, similarity with previous familiar tunes, linguistics, so many reasons... whenever I find the most likely answer I make an episode!

Note: The distance between the higher version and the lower version is ONE OCTAVE, that is, a distance of 12 keys on the keyboard. Every note in the high version is separated from its corresponding note in the low version by 12 KEYS. If you are new to music, you can count and see for yourself - it is fascinating. The one octave distance on the keyboard has been used to create a sense of physical distance (and the underlying emotions due to distance ) between people in a few songs. Examples from Ilaiyaraaja: Va va pakkam va, Aan Paavam background score.

In fact, Yuvan has used this style in many of his songs. I like how Yuvan transcends from very high pitch to low pitch almost immediately.
"Sollamal thottu chellum thendral" song from "Dheena" is another example that immediately comes to my mind.
Also, "Panithuli Panithuli" song from "Kanda Naal Mudhal" movie. That stanza sounds "lustful" in low pitch voice. But, the same stanza in high pitch with same lines give a feeling of "longing".
My most favorite song of Yuvan in this style is "Poi Solla" song from "April Maadhathil".

beautiful analysis mam... and that's my favourite part of the song... உடனே வந்தால் உயிர் வாழ்வேன்... வருவேன் அநநாள் வரக்கூடும் ❤❤❤ interesting fact is the song is loosely based on Nedunalvaadai (நெடுநல்வாடை) which is 7th among the collection known as Paththupaatu (பத்துப்பாட்டு)... another interesting song in this movie is Rakkamma kaiya thattu where the orchestration fluctuates from heavy to medium to almost nil...

Very nice analysis! Thanks. Carnatic singer Sikkil Gurucharan had posted a video in which he pointed out during pallavi when hero/heroine are nearby, kalyani ragam (which is mangala ragam - union?) where as in caranam when they are separated, kosalam ragam is used that has ri and ga very closely spaced (chromatic), hence denoting desonance due to separation. Raaja must have thought only for few moments and let sarasvathy work through him to give these notations in 45 mins or so. He said while he takes less than 30 mins for total notations for any song, this one took 45 mins! He has never bragged about all these, but he gets to be called arrogant one!

The song 'Sundari Kannal' was the last recorded by Ilaiyaraja for Mani Ratnam. It is based on Raga Kalyani? Maniratnam did not like the song because he wanted something like PS1 and Ilayaraja refused to compose an alternative version. Strangely, there is a separate club of humans who totally dislike this song of Ilayaraja because of the mish-mash of too many variations and also the visuals. Nevertheless, as you pointed out, there are tiny windows where the song is palatable. What you have observed is the most fundamental idea used by composers. Usually, higher pitches are in flute and lower pitches are in sarangi etc to exaggerate the distance factor. While its undoubtedly true that Ilayaraja is one of the rare genius world has ever seen, we must know there are bigger ones like Kannadasan for their spontaneity and flow.

Thanks for detailed thoughts! I like to think this song is to Raja as Bohemian Rhapsody is to Queen! Neither is your instantly likeable song... but both are cult status strange compositions where alternating mish mash of styles happen! (As for me, “Palatable” is not my word for this song! Awe, Goosebumps, and tears are closer to my feelings for this song).

I suppose it’s how we view it… simply as a song to be performed on stage by itself, or something that presents the core of the story. Loving a man doing street justice with fights is pretty much like this song… you don’t know when he’s going to come back from his battles… your story alternates with sweetness and anxiety… It may not be great as stand alone but it’s well made for the story… The meandering suits the anxiety felt… there is no peace or resolution in your heart. Putting honey sweetness as in the case of a stand alone song wouldn’t have worked according to how Raaja sir saw the situation…

However, videos such as these will send positive vibrations for sure - like one appreciating his/her mom's cooking part by part, more than being emotional.

Its the narration of the script tht instantaneously, spontaneously & intuitively triggers Isaignani's inspiration & imagination, to encapsulate fr posterity, the emergent emotions, in perfect sync wth the film scenario. This, thereaftr, sparks of the lyricist & eventually, a cult classic emerges.

I understand… I believe music director and editor have closely related jobs. Both feel how tiny changes (like keeping the scene or music even one second longer) can cause a significant change in the mood… both are story tellers… I edit a lot (not VFX, just story telling edits) and feel the similarities between both roles.
