As a senior eng at a FAANG, I use the term "Cat herder" instead a "puppet master", but the description of the jobs are 100% spot on.
The hardest part of being a upper level IC is you no authority, but have to convince so many other teams to march to the beat of your drum.

Yup, definitely heard that term as well. It's so true! I do miss the days of just being able to code though, writing docs and sitting in meetings trying to get everyone on the same page is not really what I had in mind for a career in software engineering haha
