    The IR device was so sensitive to heat, wow. Soldering it without damaging it was one of the more amazing displays of talent. I love watching Alex do his work.

    Your soldering skills are awesome! I have used "Nickel print" to connect to tiny LEDS. Basically, it is a high conductivity adhesive. I use a drop of crazy glue to attach the led and then join the pads on the LED to the traces with a small drop of conductive glue. MG Chemicals - 841AR-15ML Nickel Print (Conductive Paint)

    It baffles me that car manufacturers, who know the daily abuse that a fob goes through, have not sought simple ways to protect the delicate electronics. Just further proof of the awful trend of saving a few pennies with no real concern for the end user. Great technique and video.

      Not they don't care, there's more money with bad parts like Benz key fobs, they don't just sell a fob that'll start the vehicle right away, it requires programming/coding to the vehicle which is additional fees, plus, Benz vehicles after 2014, only dealers can add keys to these vehicles, so there's money to be made for em

      It's part of secondary business. They expect you to buy a replacement from them instead of repairing at the prices they established beforehand. And they're not cheap.

    • @stanwashighski3553
      @stanwashighski3553 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Twenty years is a descent service record given the abuse you speak of. That cheap fob has outlasted many of the cars put on the road. They do be using some shady practices though.

    • @SuperMarioDiagnostics
      @SuperMarioDiagnostics 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're in the business of selling parts
      Sure they can apply a layer of epoxy on it, but then these repairs would not be worth doing.
      So if you own a Mercedes, don't throw the keys around like people used to do. Always hand them over

    • @TheMookie1590
      @TheMookie1590 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its simple my good friend.
      they want it to break.
      key fobs can cost $700 from the dealer. They dont fix it, they throw it away, get a new one for $700

    Quick check of IR is to point it at the camera. It will pick it up. You could actually see it during one of the last tests.

  • @screen-protector
    @screen-protector 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are two things which we could use here without soldering:
    One is a graphite adhesive, the 2nd is silver adhesive. You can see them on a rear window of the car which is heating up. Next, once it's holding, you can either use a UV mask to harden it, or you can use a super glue + baking soda.
    I don't have examples of using it on this YT channel, so can't show it in action, but you're a smart person and for sure can do it ;) just on your own.

    Hey Alex, texting from Ireland 🇮🇪. I have an lg 6lsy soundbar. The issue is sound keeps dropping every 30 minutes, if I raise the volume to max it gets lower. Turn off and on back to normal for 30 minutes. I know you don't work on soundbars but I thought you might have an insight as to what it might be. Thanks..... long time viewer. You're the best tech person (guy) I've seen.

    Was wondering way you don't use low melting point soldering here.
    Other option I see is dot soldering.

    Another way is to grind near the sensor and put the soldering iron tip near to one of the pads so you can melt the solder under it and voila you take it out

    I fixed my dads key fob, he presses too hard and the button connector breaks off, I fixed it twice and keep telling him to press gently but he is stubborn so second time I added support with hot glue and it's been going well over a year now.

  • @davepusey

    I'm puzzled why an RF keyfob also needs to have an IR transmitter?

    • @StuRedman
      @StuRedman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      RF can be jammed. Thiefs use jammers in parking lots hoping people just press lock and walk away without checking if the car actually locks.
      In such a case you can point your key at the sensor at the door handle and still lock it.
      Also with theses old keys IR is used for communication when the key is inserted in the lock. That's how the customer noticed the issue - he could unlock the car but not start it.

    fun fact: if your IR car keys stop working and you measure the coin battery in a tester, it could be measured in good range of capacity, but it is still not enough for the key. IDK why, but most of the car keys require high capacity of the battery.

    I was wondering why a key fob would use IR in this day and age and then I read the title of the video. 2002 car... Ohhhh. My car made in the early 2000s didn't even have a remote control key fob. Must be one of them fancy luxury cars. Didn't know the "fob" keys used IR to start car. Never had a car that came with a fob used to start the car. Why would you want an expensive fob to start the car instead of keys is beyond me. Since it wasn't keyless as you still needed to insert the fob.
