"The great thing about losing [confidence] is if you get it back, you know you're never gonna lose it again." - Christopher Eccleston Truer and wiser words have never been spoken.
I think there's an interesting angle to Eccleston not growing up with the show before he played the Doctor. He was focusing on how to create and play a certain character from a particular perspective (a lonely traveller, as he essentially describes) rather than potentially falling into the danger of parodying what had come before. Given that the show was being reinvented at the time, that may be been a benefit in disguise. I love all of the new Doctors, but I think Eccleston is one of the best and most underrated. His Doctor is certainly (in my opinion) one of the most unique iterations of the character ever created, I would have loved to see him alongside Tennant and Smith in the 50th with the level of quality writing to which the show had developed by that point.
It's so nice that he's doing conventions now. He's every bit the thoughtful professional I figured he'd be. Excellent interview. Thank you very much for posting this!
This has been one of the best panel interviews I’ve ever seen. I’m from the north of England to, and I’ve always admired Christopher Ecclestone. He’s a great actor. I’m shocked that he was treated in such a way and being black listed. Well not by this fan because even after leaving doctor who I always looked forward to seeing what role he’d be playing next.
10:00 He says Tennent knew it was much a bigger part than just a character, but that's only because his perfomance set the foundation for the whole new series. No one knew if the new series would work at the time when they were filming, people only begin to see its potential when they saw the fantastic first season. He needs to stop (jokingly) saying no one liked his perfomance or audiences wants David's doctor more than his :'(
While I agree that he should stop joking about and putting down his performance, that's not the reason Tennant knew the part was more than the character. As Ecclescake said, he didn't grow up with the show, he wasn't part of the fandom, so to him it was just another character in another job that just happened to have existed in an earlier time. Whilst the success of his season certainly played it's part when Tennant took over, Tennant also had the knowledge of being part of the fandom since a very early age. He knew the expectations that came with that role, which Ecclescake didn't. That's what he's referring to, something that began long before the relaunch was ever a thing. :-)

As a British fan, you can't deny his honesty re; the UK, the press, his own personal private drama, hard upbringing etc. When it comes to Doctor Who, those he worked for and his sudden untimely exit he immediately becomes very uncomfortable, even now. There's still some pain there but he clearly doesn't want to bring up those 'unfortunate circumstances' anymore. Of the 13 Eccleston DW episodes, 3 are classics - Dalek, Empty Child, Doctor Dances. There are IMO entire seasons after him with no standout episodes at all. I think we forget that.

Some people think that a fictional TV show is more important than the health and the well-being of the human beings who make it possible unfortunately. Most people accepted that he had good personal reasons for leaving and respected his decision because his happiness and wellbeing is more important than any TV show. Unfortunately there is a vocal minority who either disagree with putting people first or lack any emotional intelligence. I don't think that I have a huge natural gift for emotional intelligence, however even I could sense that he was undergoing some trauma during the filming of doctor who because of the many interviews that he's given since. It wasn't so much of a surprise that he had an eating disorder because he was very thin for a while. There was a thread on the imbd website that's been removed whereby people were saying how skinny he was. I have thought about what these insensitive doctor who fanatics would have thought if he had succumbed to his illness. Would they still be bashing him insisting that Doctor Who is the only thing that matters?
Love it. He's so funny and real. It's sort of sad to realize that bc of RTD coming back and dominating the 60th there is little to no chance of Chris coming back any time soon. I think under another showrunner he might've considered a return to the screen next year.

Ha! Underrated comment.
Was it actually cosplay, though?
Fair play to Chris. Was never a big fan of his to begin with and after but he still shows affection towards Doctor Who. More than ever it seems. Plus he still remembers lines and episode titles.
Chris is joking about 100th anniversary, but I'm waiting to see him in 2023 telling his kids "I am not doing it" 😉
Great interview and questions ! :-)
Eccleston and Tennant are my doctors I can't choose between them because I love them both for different reasons.
Same
My late mother used to promote bands in the Night and Day in Manchester. I'm not sure if I ever went there, but hearing Chris talk about it really brought back some memories.
I watched doctor who from the very first episode, CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON is the best!!!!!!!
Helen Kelly technically the very first episode was in 1963.
@@prof.evilpictures8696 i know,iwatched it with my sister i was 13.
You must be joking.
@@rnw2739 i wouldnt joke about doctor who.
I loved him as the Doctor,
and I’ve been watching the show since Jon Pertwee days. Chris was awesome!
I believe The Naked Civil Servant was an ITV production and not BBC. But it WAS produced by Verity Lambert the original Dr Who producer
Eccleston has my highest respect. My first Doctor and an absolute gentleman.
Here’s to the 100th anniversary.
Let’s all hope we’re still alive by then
@@murdermcmurderface I'm counting down the days!
I hope mow the people who think the sun shines out of Davis and Collinson's arse and slag off Moffat while now be silent for once. I have met Chris he was lovely.
Amazing interview, great job, thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you very much, Constance!
All this time it’s so clear to see now he’s mellowing to the show, but him coming back was still a wonderful surprise
We love you Chris!
We will always be 9 and 9 will always be Christopher Eccleston. Love this man alongside all of them.
I adore Mr. Eccleston! 💜
I love the fact that Eccleston knows the year of the 100th anniversary. I think I always assumed he didn't know much about the show.
"I Love The Bones of You"
Book signing in Chicago!!?
We love you Chris
Great interview, well done 👏👏
I love how matter of factly he said that he’s coming back for the 100th episode.
Can you put a timestamp
Well he wasn’t around in the Hartnell era so he didn’t come back for the 100th episode. But I’m sure you meant the 100th anniversary
Highlights (paraphrased):

-Doctor Who is frightening for my kids because they know they're dads an idiot

-"Hello Doctor!" "Hello nurse!"
-WHEN HE ACCIDENTALLY SAYS FANTASTIC
I honestly feel bat for chris, hes getting bashed by docotor who fans when he was really a great doctor and I would love to see more of him
Some people think that a fictional TV show is more important than the health and the well-being of the human beings who make it possible unfortunately.
