  • Ben Saunders and Tarka L'Herpiniere fly from Punta Arenas, Chile to the Antarctic Peninsula, on a modified DC3 prop-plane. Watch this short video for an insight into their journey....
Right now, Ben Saunders and Tarka L'Herpiniere are on arguably the most ambitious polar journey in history - an 1800 mile unsupported return journey from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back retracing Captain Scott's footsteps.
The Scott Expedition will be the longest unsupported polar journey in history and first completion of Captain Scott's ill-fated 1910-12 Terra Nova expedition.

Basler does a amazing job on the old DC 3's.It's funny but this is probably the most sophisticated complex yet simple airplane there is.They take the old rugged reliable DC-3's and bring them into the 20th century.Considering the DC-3's have made it past 70 years in service I see no reason they wont make it to a hundred years of rugged service and this Basler conversion exemplifies the old saying that the only real replacement for a DC 3 is another DC-3 lol.

Those DC-3s are pretty much new airframes after they leave Basler. And new very reliable turboprops. I'd love to have the opportunity to fly on one.

El despegue y el aterrizaje no lo grabaron. Era lo mejor ver ese DC3 despegando lo que más me gusta.!! ¿Qué pasó..!?

3:33 - 3:43 - King George island, off the tip of the northernmost penninsula of Antarctica. They basically arrived at the warmest part of Antarctica, and in the summer of the southern hemisphere, since it was light out. And, it was still below freezing, -9 celcius (16 farenheit). I don't think anywhere in Antarctica ever rises above freezing, does it?

    Thanks for the update.
I wish you health, strength, endurance and luck, a lot of it. In such a hostile environment as you will be trawling through, luck is something good to have plenty of.
I hope for the best, and cross my fingers.
(I´v newer seen a comet list this empty after 5 days. I´m comet 3! I simply can´t belief it. Something is going wrong with humanity...)

Yeah no pressurization on a DC 3 but that's about all that Basler doesnt do to them in their upgrade/rebuild process.

Yep. Not even economy on airlines ever fly to Antarctica.
No commercial aircrafts fly there because there are no airports or control towers. And for the same reason plus with it being dark, no planes of any kind fly to Antarctica in the southern hemisphere winter months. And the fuel in the aircraft may freeze even midflight because of temperatures getting to almost 100 below zero.

That's the sad part of being a poor country... God bless the families of our lads who died doing their duty. When are we fucking stopping buying flying crap that is famous to brake mid-flight? Americans build great things, but C130s are not one of them.
