  • A few tips on buying a sport bike. I buy multiple bikes a month but obviously do not make multiple help videos a month so please excuse the shoddy camera work.
    Thanks for watching!

Just for note # Black smoke is usually a sign of being overly rich with fuel, and blue smoke is gen oil burning, all the time is rings, or valve glides or both, white is coolant, these are the simple ones;) there can be a mixture of more than one, and they will have different smells to them to help know witch is the culprit.
Some are also depended on if the bike is carburetored, or fuel injected to tell how bad, or not so bad it could be for carburetor bikes.
Here is a simple but biggie, put a piece of paper over the exhaust while running at idle, if it gets sucked back hard, its a burnt valve, or way out of adjustment, or both.....

This is great information, not only for a buyer but also for maintaining your own bikes.

Outstanding video! I never knew what to look for to know if it had been a track bike. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
About the smoke; if it is blueish and stops smoking after warming up, that is typically the valve seals. There are rubber seals in the valve cover that fit over the valve stem that prevent the oil in the valve cover from traveling down the valve stem and into the combustion chamber. If these seals are worn, it will allow oil to leak past when the engine is cold and cause some blue smoke. As the engine warms up the rubber will expand slightly and stop the leak and the blue smoke. This repair is much less costly then piston rings.
Also, as others have said black smoke is generally a rich fuel condition. If the bike is carbureted, this can happen when the choke is on and that it totally normal. If it smokes black without the choke, that can be a costly repair unless you are a skilled mechanically and know what you are doing. Bikes with a single carburetor (an older 250cc, etc.) can be easily adjusted/fixed with basic skills and some research.

    In Summary:
    -Fork Seals
    -Fairings
-Safety wire holes and sticker residue to indicate track usage
    -Chain tension and sprocket wear
-Frame sliders and levers to indicate its been dropped
-Tire wear (cupping & tread life)
-Engine noises (excessive ticking, banging, knocking)
-Excessive black smoke when reved up
-Lights (turn signals, brakes, headlights, etc)
-Wheel lip (dings/dents), straight rotors, brake pad life
-Gas tank with flashlight for rust or debris

Some of the schools have an internship as one of the required credits. I went to Chattahoochee tech in GA for the motorcycle program and they used to have an internship but they did away with it. The best person to ask would be the instructor if its a local school you are thinking about going to. You can also call the dealerships and local shops but most big dealers will avoid it if a school isint involved
    due to liability issues

very easy to understand (no techno jargon) also very helpful pointers on when the bike is off and what to look for. The pointers about the race identifiers is helpful to those who haven't been to the track~ Thanks for making this video and sharing your information!

Tip #1, never inspect a bike in a garage, inspect in a well lit area

Great video! I would suggest when inspecting the engine exhaust fumes to block the can for a second or two to see if the bike stalls which could indicate a problem also visually check and smell your hand after blocking to see or sense burned oil.

Just a heads up on the engine smoke when decelerating. I believe you can judge the condition of the piston rings by decelerating because when you decelerate, the positive pressure that was present during acceleration/combustion in the combustion chamber disappears and gets replaced by a negative/vacuum-ish pressure. This means the pressure under the piston (where the oil is) is higher compared to the pressure above the piston, which really demands the piston rings to be in good shape to stop the oil trying to flow towards the low pressure area. In short: Engines first start smoking in deceleration before anything else happens.

    • @Evans190
      @Evans190  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep, and if unable to ride the bike, you will see the most smoke after you let off the throttle, not while on it. Pretty much a snapshot on what happens when you decel, just not for long.

There is not any specific way to know just from looking at a bike. You can hear bad bearings, damaged valves and valve seats and knocks though. Ask them to crank it up for you. If they start revving it up to show you how good it sounds right away (and some people will) you should probably avoid it. More damage is done overrevving a bike sitting at idle than when actually riding it with a load on the engine.

I would also recommend to look for alignment issues with the front wheel and that the tread is going in the right direction, seen a few bikes where the front tread goes forward o_O

Nice video, try to increase the video quality and make it on a open place, it will be much better! Other things that I recomend to look for, is the radiator, to see if have some little rocks, an the exhaust, look for the tube, to see if there is some diferent colors.

There not really any way to check it without actually riding the bike that I know of. If you can get a test ride, go through all the gears to make sure the bike shift properly. If you are somewhat of an experienced rider, put some torque on them to make sure nothings slipping.
You cant really tell by shifting it while its just sitting there, but i guess you can go through the gears by shifting up and down while rolling the bike back and forth. I really dont think it will tell you much :)

Many bikers rev their bike above the rev limiter, this usually damage the engine.
How can you know if the owner used to rev it above the limiter?? Is there a sound it makes?? Thanks!
