- Mike Marshall and Chris Thile playing "Gator Strut" from Mike Marshall's album of the same name.
This is a clip from Mike Marshall & Chris Thile's set on the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour. You can watch the show in its entirety by visiting the Woodsongs archives at www.woodsongs.c... (show #287).
I’ve been listening to this solo for 10 years now and I still can’t believe it 🤯
Most underrated musical performance on TH-cam. Chris’s solo is the best I’ve ever heard on a mandolin by far in any song.
Mike Marshall also killed it on the Mandocello that is not an easy instrument to play. Mad respect
chris's solo is unreal, i have never heard anything like that before
You should look up "mandolin arpeggios" if you want to hear more :-)
Nah but for real doe he aight. Kind of a show off imo but sometimes he makes pretty melodies
If anyone ever asks what my all time favorite TH-cam video is, this will without a doubt be the one that comes to mind.
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve watched this video
The master and the master. Mike Marshall has set a standard that inspired many players including Thile. Not sure that anyone else could give that kind of solo and backup to Chris than Mike. Both are the best and Chris has just soared into the outer limits of the Universe. Awesome. russ
I keep coming back...
That solo from Chris..... what in the world. My god
I would concur. Dude went to outer space.
I’ve been watching this video somewhat regularly for the last 10 years and Chris’ solo at the end always impresses me!
Thile is absolutely nuts in this.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this video for some time now. Wonderful collaboration of instruments. Mike and Chris play so well together. (Chris is down rite lethal with that mandolin of his!!!) A great inspiration when I first started playing the mandolin myself.
I have never heard anything this significant! Amazing!!!!
I keep returning to this one, has to be one of the best mandolin solos out there!
MIke & Chris - You ROCK!
I would by a CD me and all my friends and family of this combo right here! Marshall Cello and Thile on mando. I could listen to it for hours!! Awesome!! Thanks for posting!
Soooo Cool! thank YOU!
Holy Cow!
LIKE SERIOUSLY, does it get any better? just fucking STRUTTIN IT. nothing BUT da STRUT
YES!
How does that much talent get packed into one body? Thile is insane - I mean that in a good way. I've never seen anybody use a mandolin like that. Jeez. This vid just became one of my top five faves. Thanks very much for sharing this!!
Chris est absolument incroyable, quel musicien !!!!
this vid might feature thile's best solo ever
These guys are great players!
Love it!!!
Nice!!
there is a video Mike marshall showed us at the Mandolin symposium that showed, Mike, Chris and hamilton DeHolando, working this tune over and Hamilton gives chris the nod to take the first solo and chris waves it back to Ham and Mike said he was thinkin you don't know who you just nodded off, take the first solo and save yourself, but he nodded it off again it was amazing, three masters, shredding acoustic wonderment!
i dnt know how mny little side melodies and licks in here that cold become lick hit songs!
Whoa!
Both amazing talents, but Thile is a documented freak of nature.
I bow to a new master after seeing this..... O_o
That is a Monteleone mando cello, with distinctive headstock and scroll.
Chris plays on his F5 mandolin.
Thank you I was about to ask but then i saw this.
I'm not sure how much better music can get. Thile is going to be like django after he dies, almost a myth.
Josh Newell I think this will remain largely unnoticed for a long time, but this is a hidden treasure. Better than Django imo
holy crap...I don't have enough thumbs to put up for this.
go to woodsongs website and I think you can download the show! they broadcast every monday I think!
Notice both their feet and instrument positions. Left leg lifts and supports instrument, holding neck up. May not let you play like them, but apparently takes weight off neck side.
Wowee kazowee. I didn't know you could do that on a cello or mandolin.
Great mandolin players !
i dnt know how mny little side melodies and licks in here that cold become lick hit songs! thile needs to give a yerin sample b4 he gets up on stage. this performance is not humanly possible!
i dunno...his solo in "the goat rodeo sessions 13:8" was pretty good too. but im still not sure which is better.
where ca ni get an afortable mandocello?
yes... an octave... tuned ADGC.... I think that that is the same as a bouzouki. Basically the same as a Mandola just deeper voice by an octave.
Octave mandola aka mandocello.
@CGiordano464 If by affordable, you mean over 1K+, then anywhere! :D
@jbobbylew
Same, I'll just have to settle for thumbing up all the comments.
Haha that solo is like paul gilbert on mandolin
Mike Marshall is on octave mandola (mandocello).
Damn - it's the Al Dimeola of Mandolin !
Is that a Gibson K something mandocello?
+chas5131
Yes. A Gibson K4 mandocello
+chas5131
It is a mandocello that was built by John Monteleone in the late '70's or early '80's. A stunning instrument!
jabuendia1 Mandocello/octave mandola
@@jabuendia1 True, Monteleone with distinctive scroll and headstock.
any difference between a bouzouki and that mando cello?
A bouzouki is tuned like an octave mandolin, G,D,A,E, while the mandocello is tuned a fifth lower, C,G,D,A
Everett Skubinna So mandocello serves as an octave mandola. Bouzouki is tuned GDAD.
jeff goldblum on bass mandolin
8 people do not understand the mandocello.
Damn - it's the Al Dimeola of Mandolin !
or is it Mandocello ?
Tim Burton rocks the Mandocello!
Damn - it's the Al Dimeola of Mandolin !
or is it Mandocello ?
A Mandolin savant if you will.
The funny thing is - imagine what he could do with an instrument of appropriate size.
This is like watching Beethoven when he was 3 - playing a symphony on one of those little childrens pianos - and being floored by it
Damn - it's the Al Dimeola of Mandolin !
or is it Mandocello ?
A Mandolin savant if you will.
The funny thing is - imagine what he could do with an instrument of appropriate size.
I’d put that solo in the Steve Val, Joe Satriani, anybody fast and technically perfect. So beyond bluegrass.
Damn - it's the Al Dimeola of Mandolin !
or is it Mandocello ?
A Mandolin savant if you will.
